Welcome to True Friends!

Whether your ideal camp is relaxing or adventurous, social or therapeutic, entertaining or educational, we have many options for you. Our blend of traditional and dynamic programs continue the legacy of Camp Courage and Camp Friendship through the parent company, True Friends. We continue to enhance and expand our services. Our 2015 programs are better than ever, with many new sessions. We’ve also made it easier to sign up for camp with a new online application! Take a look at the True Strides therapy horses program, the additional multi-sensory environment areas or our growing occupational skills sessions, and you will find new and innovative ways to experience camp. As always, we put care and safety first. Our staff is highly trained to provide the guidance, supervision and the personal care participants need. The heart of our mission is providing life-changing experiences that enhance independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities. That’s a tall order, but as many families know, camp is where it can happen. There is something different and special about the programs at True Friends. No matter what session you choose, woven into each program and service is the common thread of building and renewing friendships. We look forward to seeing our old friends and making many new ones!

Campers who need short, frequent programs, with a high level of transition support between activities will thrive in this session. Days are filled with visual supports, sensory breaks and highly structured activity periods. Following the second session of Camp Discovery, a limited number of participants will embark on an adventure trip. Campers will canoe to campsites while getting to know the great outdoors. To participate in this trip, campers must have previously attended Camp Discovery, be able to tolerate several hours of canoeing, be able to sleep in a tent in any weather, tolerate insects and use a portable, outdoor toilet. Camp directors will make the final selection. For information and an application, call the Autism Society of MN at 651.647.1083.

Partnering with ANSWER (Asperger’s Network Support), this structured program for campers with an autism spectrum disorder emphasizes social skills practice and making friends. Research shows that people learn social skills much better when they practice them during meaningful activities. Camp incorporates skill practice all day in meaningful group programs such as swimming, canoeing, recreational games, rock climbing, campfire songs, skits and more. July 26-31

Horsing Around

Traditional camp PLUS equine experiences. Riders brush, feed and ride one of our beautiful equine partners. These experiences enhance the development of each person’s confidence, self-esteem, communication and social skills, not to mention “just having fun!” Riding and steering the horse encourages concentration, focus and motor planning. The gentle rhythmic rocking of the horse is calming for many people with sensory processing impairments or behavioral issues.

Camp ADDventure Trips

This trip will bring campers right into the thick of adventure. Power-packed camping trips meet the needs of youth with ADD/ADHD and other academic and/or social skill difficulties. Literacy Camp

Struggling readers, of any degree, enjoy recreational activities and work with educational specialists on literacy-related activities. Informal literacy assessments and interventions are given to families to share with schools. These reports are reviewed by national literacy experts, Dr. David Koppenhaver and Dr. Karen Erickson. Camp We-No-Wheeze Central is for kids with moderate to severe asthma problems, on daily asthma medications. Hemophilia Extreme Adventure Trip

Campers push their boundaries on this extreme adventure by canoeing, hiking and camping through the Wisconsin woodlands. Campers must be able to tolerate 3-hour canoe rides and 45-minute hikes. What do the care ratios mean?

True Friends welcomes people ages 5 to adult who have developmental or physical disabilities or health conditions. Summer and winter camp, day camp, respite weekends, wilderness trips, travel, therapeutic riding, team building and volunteer & youth leadership development. We also partner with other disability and health organizations to host their camp sessions at our sites. Programs are listed in sections: red = developmental disabilities, blue = physical disabilities, green = health & social education. Session costs are based on care needs. We provide a typical range of 1:1 to 1:8 care. Staff-to-camper ratios in a camp setting often differ from daily living care ratios. If you need help to determine your care ratio, contact our staff. High Care Support: 1:1-2 • Needs “eyes on” supervision during awake hours • Uses manual wheelchair and needs staff support to propel outside buildings • May need total support with activities of daily living Medium Care Support: 1:3-4 • Campers enjoy living in group setting • May need verbal support with activities of daily living • Easily accept support from staff Low Care Support: 1:5+ • Campers enjoy group settings • Are independent with activities of daily living

How do I register?

Yes, we encourage tours of our locations any time of year. Schedule by calling 952.852.0110 or email info@truefriends.org. Consider attending one of our open houses in May, it’s a great way to get a feel for camp and meet our staff.

Is a deposit required?

How do I pay?

Yes, to be registered for services, a deposit is required for each session. Deposits will be applied toward the total session cost. True Friends encourages campers to apply early, as openings fill quickly and the deposit increases for later registrations. Jan 1 - Mar 31: $300 | April 1 - May 15: $400 | After May 15: $500 Checks, VISA, MasterCard, Discover or AMEX are accepted. Fees should be paid in full before the first day of camp. If needed, payment plan options are available, contact the finance department for more information.

Do you offer financial assistance?

Yes. With the generous support of donors, we are able to provide financial assistance to many participants with proven need. To request aid, the financial assistance portion of the application must be completed and submitted with the application. Anyone eligible for waivered services or Consumer Directed Community Supports (CDCS) can contact us and your social worker for information on how these funds can be applied to camp.

10. What is your cancellation policy?

All advanced fees paid will be refunded in full if notice is received in the True Friends office 30 days prior to the applicants’ session. If less than 30 days notice is received, all but the registration deposit will be refunded.
