About True Friends True Friends is a nonprofit agency providing life-changing experiences that enhance independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities. We welcome campers ages 5+ with and without diagnosed disabilities, including developmental or physical disabilities, or health conditions. True Friends’ programs include camp, respite, therapeutic horseback riding, conference and retreat, travel and team building; serving over 25,000 individuals annually. With camps near Maple Lake, Annandale, Eden Prairie and Bemidji, True Friends serves campers in Minnesota and throughout the United States.

Supporting campers for a Successful Experience True Friends partners with families and guardians to make each camper’s experience successful. In

Motivated, Caring & Trained Staff Our amazing staff are the reason campers love True Friends camps. We hand pick our team from hundreds of applicants from across the country and the world; 12 states and 9 countries to be exact! Our outstanding staff members are college students, young professionals and teachers who share a passion for working with people of all walks and rolls of life. No matter their previous experience, True Friends staff attend a rigorous week of in-person training and 12 hours of online courses to prepare them to care for the individual needs of each camper. Staff are trained by our Registered Nurses; from verbal cues to total assistance, our staff are here to help parents and caregivers sleep easy and give campers a positive camp experience like no other.

order for us to do this we need guardians and families to provide extensive information about each camper. True Friends also acknowledges not all campers are appropriate for the “camp-type” setting in which the program is provided. True Friends is a licensed home and community based basic support service; we are not an intensive or crisis service organization. Therefore, True Friends reserves the right to deny services to campers who we believe pose a safety threat to themselves, other campers and/or employees.

Care Ratios Care ratios and session costs are based on care needs. Often staff-to-camper ratios in a camp setting differ from daily living care ratios. If you’d like help determining your care ratio, please refer to our care ratio guidelines below or contact our staff.

High Care Support: 1:1

• May have frequent verbal or physical outbursts that require staff intervention • May be unable to communicate needs • May have trouble participating in a group setting or display inappropriate behaviors • May need extensive support with medical care needs • Needs “eyes on” supervision during awake hours. The True Friends staffing model does not offer overnight awake staff. Staff assist campers with typical needs during the night. • Uses manual wheelchair and needs staff support to propel outside buildings • May need total support with activities of daily living

Medium Care Support: 1:3

• May have occasional verbal or physical outbursts that require staff intervention • May have trouble with large social environments, but does well in small groups • May need some support with medical care needs • May need verbal support with activities of daily living • Easily accepts support from staff

Low Care Support: 1:5

4

• Can respond well to new and unfamiliar situations • Can enjoy group settings • Are independent with activities of daily living • Easily communicates wants and needs • Easily accepts support from staff

Staff Spotlight Meet Polly C. If you visited Camp Courage last summer, chances are you ran into Polly in the Reception Building. She likely greeted you with a warm smile and asked how she could help. Polly is just one of the passionate and seasoned staff members working at True Friends. Polly began her career at True Friends in 2014 as a Counselor in Training (C.I.T.), and then transitioned to a respite counselor the following summer. Since 2016 she has been an office coordinator. “I feel like each role was so unique and I enjoyed all of them for different reasons,” said Polly. “It was fun being able to directly interact with the campers in my C.I.T. and respite counselor roles. What I really like about this role, as office coordinator, is the added responsibility.” However, it is not the office responsibilities that keep her coming back each year to camp. Currently an Elementary Education major with a focus in Special Education and Reading, Polly’s experience at camp is changing her life both professionally and personally. “I love the campers that I’ve been able to see year to year,” Polly said. “I think about the people that we serve and a lot of them have such a positive attitude and outlook on life and they don’t care what other people think about them. I try to take those values and allow them to be part of my own life.”

Mission

Provide life-changing experiences that enhance independence and self-esteem for children and adults with disabilities.

Vision

A world where experiences and adventures are open to individuals of all abilities.

CAMP DISCOVERY 1 & 2

This session is designed for adults with mild to moderate brain injuries. Have fun while attending groups led by skilled therapists from Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. Work on memory, time management, problem solving strategies, coping and social skills. Campers also enjoy traditional camp and outdoor activities while increasing social and cognitive skills.

In partnership with Autism Society of MN (AuSM), Camp Discovery is ideal for youth with autism spectrum disorder who will enjoy a summer camp experience with a high degree of structure and small group activities. Campers should be able to positively interact and safely participate within small groups. Campers in this program will be staffed at a 1:3 care ratio. Campers will be grouped into 8-person cabins with bathrooms, according to age, gender, and interests. Campers enjoy their meals in a dining hall or on an outdoor deck. Camp activities include: swimming, kayaking, canoeing, hiking in Itasca State Park, arts and crafts, nature experiences, recreational games, live action role play (LARPing), and more. Camp Discovery includes special events like a carnival, movie night and music fest. Campers also participate in small group discussions and activities that focus on special interests and making a connection with others. HEADWATERS AUTISM ADVENTURE In collaboration with the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM), this exciting weeklong trip is tailored to the needs of teenagers on the autism spectrum. While camping, canoeing, biking, and hiking through beautiful north-country terrain, campers will develop communication, leadership, and wilderness survival skills. The program will begin with two days of preparation, and team-building at Camp Courage North. Then as they explore Itasca State Park and the surrounding Paul Bunyan State Forest, campers will have the opportunity to delve into a special interest such as: animal tracking, plant identification, shelter building, outdoor cooking, history, or nature art. Campers will be staffed at a 1:3 care ratio and should be able to tolerate 1-3 hours of moderate exercise at a time. Please apply for this program directly through True Friends. Your application will be automatically registered with the Autism Society of Minnesota, and those new to the community will receive a complimentary year-long AuSM membership with your registration. Visit www.ausm.org to learn more about AuSM and the benefits of membership.

to homesickness, illness and personal care assistance, but True Friends Camps do not provide 24-hour awake staff.

Healthcare The care of our campers is our number one priority. Each of our camps has a Registered Nurse on-site daily to provide leadership and professional level of care. In addition to nurses, our camps have a team of Camp Nursing Assistants. These high-level medical and nursing students pass meds, are on-site 24 hours a day, have advanced training in first aide and give out popsicles on hot days. If you are going on one of the Adventure Trips, you will be in the hands of a staff member who is a Wilderness First Responder.

Special Diets We know camp is a change of scenery, but that does not mean it has to be a complete lifestyle change. Our fantastic kitchen team will meet your camper’s dietary needs. Meals are served at 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. (depending on location), 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and the majority of special diet requirements can be met on-site or on a Trip Program. 19
