Dear Friends, True Friends has a long legacy that stems from decades of generous giving, dedicated staff and helpful volunteers. For more than 50 years at Camp Friendship and for 60 years at Camp Courage, children and adults with a wide range of disabilities and challenges have benefited from our life-changing experiences. In 2014 we saw another year of learning and adjustment within the organization, along with many accomplishments. Look for the highlights we’ve scattered throughout the report. Creating and maintaining dynamic programs takes dedication, along with key partnerships and a focus on affordability. As we look to 2015, affordability is among our strategic goals and we continue to make services available regardless of one’s ability to pay. Our goal is to reduce the financial burden, stress and anxiety for families who have a child with a disability, because we know that the cost of raising a child with a disability can be up to one-third more than a child without a disability. On behalf of the children and adults and families we serve, our staff, and the boards, thank you for your continued support. Together, we are truly making a difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

Mya

Mya is a spunky 7-year-old who wears her pink cowgirl boots with pride. She skips into her lesson with a smile, excited to show her latest schoolwork to the True Strides instructors because it is marked with a large ‘WOW!’ from her teacher. The exclamation was not only for her correct answer, but for her excellent handwriting as well. She started hippotherapy lessons at age 2 1/2. Mya was born with cerebellar hypoplasia, which is a rare embryonic developmental disorder in which the cerebellum is either missing entirely or is smaller than usual. In response, the brain must work to compensate by rewiring itself around the cerebellum, the region of the brain that plays an important role in motor control. Because of her condition, Mya struggled with balance, core strength, visual, motor and fine motor tasks. She also had difficulty with visual tracking which resulted in difficulty with eye-hand coordination.

Shari, director of True Strides, and Mya, age 2, still requiring a back-rider in her lessons

Hippotherapy is physical or occupational therapy that utilizes Mya, age 7, demonstrating ‘jump’ position a horse in treatment. When Mya started hippotherapy, her balance, strength and coordination were weak. She walked in a bent-over position and often fell. She has developed her core strength and now walks tall. She skips, hops and recently performed in a dance recital without missing a beat. “Therapy riding is the best thing that has ever happened to Mya. Therapy riding assessed Mya’s strengths and weaknesses and developed a game plan for improvement that actually worked,” her father, Dan said.

Launched one of the largest hippotherapy programs in MN with the completion of the new equine center and acquisition of Sharadise Therapeutics

In a typical lesson, Mya works on her core strength and balance through a variety of fun activities. She helps choose the activities, things like ring toss from the horse, playing ‘tap tap’ where two riders go side by side and tap a large beach ball back and forth and Frisbee. From the smile on her face, her talkative nature and her demonstrated determination, it is clear Mya greatly enjoys her lessons. She interacts well with the staff, is a charming presence in the arena and listens very well to the reminders about her posture and balance. The lessons provide Mya with an opportunity for therapy, disguised as an upbeat hour of horseback riding. “Mya is very competitive and very aware of what she can and cannot do. By tapping into that natural personality and gently steering her in a positive manner, her work ethic emerged and has resulted in huge progress.” Shari, Director of the True Strides program said. Mya has shown tremendous progress during the past four years of riding. Combine that with her determined spirit and network of support and you see a very bright future ahead!

Meet

Liza

Liza is a happy, hard-working 14-year-old who loves organizing her room, hanging out with friends and reading. She recently swam nine laps during a Special Olympics training session, stopping only briefly to catch her breath between lengths. We are thrilled that she’s back in the pool after being sidelined due to an eye injury during a major surgery in 2011. Liza was born with a rare craniofacial condition called Apert Syndrome. It causes the bones – primarily in the head, face, hands and feet – to grow in irregular ways. She has had more than 20 surgeries to separate her fingers, repair her palate, give her brain room to grow and enable her to breathe through her nose. She takes the surgeries in stride, tolerating the interventions and pain as she teaches her family, friends and medical team about courage, acceptance and grace. It’s her parents’ goal to give Liza the same opportunities her brother and sister have. One of these is experiencing the joy and independence of camp. They are very grateful True Friends makes camp accessible for children with special needs. Camp Courage is the highlight of the summer for Liza. Last year she attended Horsing Around Literacy Camp and loved it. She likes riding and bonding with the horses, tubing and sitting around the fire. The scholarship she receives from Dance with Courage (event story on page 6) has been a blessing, her family says. Without it, camp would not be possible because of other therapeutic and medical expenses. Jenna, a nursing student, learned about camp through her school supervisor and thought it would be a fun way to practice her nursing skills. She applied and was hired as a Health and Medication Aide at Camp Friendship. She had plenty of opportunity to use her skills at camp, but she took away much more than hands-on hours. Throughout the summer, Jenna learned patience, perseverance and creativity. Handling difficult behaviors was often challenging and stressful, but very rewarding. She learned how to provide quality medical assistance with compassion and care.

O’Donnell

“Working at camp has provided me with a new lens to look through. I have learned to be open and accepting of people of all shapes and sizes.” Her favorite memory was watching all the campers get up and move at the Thursday evening dance. Jenna graduated from nursing school in 2015 and after another summer at camp, she will begin her career as a Registered Nurse at a clinic in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Dolan

As a volunteer, Bob Dolan is willing to do any and everything. There is no job too big or too small, unless it involves power tools, Bob jokes. From tying shoelaces to assisting with daily cares for the campers, Bob does everything with positive energy and enthusiasm. He is the definition of a dedicated volunteer, even powering through a summer in an arm sling. “Bob positively impacts the dynamic of every group he is a part of,” said Tony Bown, past True Friends staff member. To the campers, Bob is a recognizable and trusted face at camp. He teaches the new counselors and acts as a personal mentor for the new staff. “Bob is the kind of guy you meet once in a lifetime. He changes the lives of everyone who meets him,” said staff Appreciation member Mel Lam. Bob said his2014 favoriteVolunteer tasks are assisting campers

“Seeing the smiles and faces of the people who do things that they’ve been told they would never do - like horseback riding, tubing and zip lining, especially for people with acquired disabilities - is one of my favorite things about camp.” -Bob Dolan with their morning and evening routines. “Helping the campers with their cares is the most rewarding task because we treat each other like old friends, and that’s when you really get to know the campers the best.” Bob learned about camp while coaching basketball and assisting with archery and track and field at Courage Center. He had a daughter with a disability, who never attended camp herself, but Bob felt compelled to volunteer. He spends a few weeks each summer at Camp Courage and always insists he gets far more out of the experience than he gives. This is impressive, given that Bob is one of the hardest working volunteers at camp, often up first and to bed last, doing so with a positive attitude and can-do spirit. He’s an amazing example of True Friends in action.

g n i s i a r Fund Event

Dance with Courage

Dance with Courage is an annual dance-a-thon at the Mall of America put on by Dance Arts Centre (DAC), a western metro dance school serving students and families from more than seven communities. The event features dances by DAC’s competition dancers, a Dad’s dance, a public inclusion dance and appearances by special groups like the Vikings Cheerleaders. The event engages businesses and individuals for sponsorships and spreads the word about True Friends camps and other services. For eight years, DAC has donated profits from its event to camp, totaling almost $110,000. The owner of Dance Arts Centre, Jill Reiken, talks about the origins of the event, “Nine years ago I was taking a course with an assignment to create an event that involved one of the communities in my life. I decided to do an event that included our students. I wanted them to understand and experience that they could make a difference in the lives of others. I wanted to focus on teaching our dancers the importance of working together, leading by example, maintaining deep values of social responsibility and giving back to our community. I had just been to a fundraising event that benefited Camp Courage and I was moved by the stories of the campers and what the camp was doing. This timing had me combine Camp Courage and Dance Arts Centre in my project, Dance with Courage. Since then, Dance with Courage has become an annual event where we have grown a relationship with Camp Courage and now True Friends. Each year our dancers and their parents have shared ideas to expand the event and our fundraising efforts as their heart and passion for camp has grown. We feel privileged to have such a special relationship with True Friends and look forward to more success in our future fundraising endeavors.”

Community Duluth Superior Area Support Community Foundation In 2005, shortly after Friendship Ventures (now True Friends) took over operations of Camp New Hope and began offering programming in the northeastern region of Minnesota, the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation became one of our first funders from the area. The foundation is a collection of funds established by area individuals, families, companies and residents to enhance the quality of life in the region in many specific ways. Since the first grant True Friends has been a consistent recipient of the foundation’s generosity. Initial grants were provided by the foundation’s Michael Adam Carroll Memorial Fund, resulting in seven grants. Later, the Lone Wolf Fund also began giving grants, increasing grant amounts several times, including a 2014 grant nearly twice True Friends’ grant request! After adding Courage Camps and its population of individuals with physical disabilities, the C.E. Jr and M.K. Fuller Fund, whose area of interest is benefiting that population, began providing grants. All grants were given to help fund camp fee assistance for Northeast Minnesota area residents. The Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation has certainly enhanced the lives of many individuals through the support of our life-changing programs.

Corporate Donor

Luther Automotive

Luther Automotive has generously been supporting True Friends camps since 2007. One way they give back to the community is through employee fundraisers. Throughout the year, team members contribute $1.00 on Fridays for the privilege of dressing casually. Each quarter, they select a charitable organization to receive these funds. Plus, they match each dollar contributed with $25!

In 2014, Dorothy Hagen, a Luther Automotive team member, suggested True Friends be the recipient. Dorothy knows about camp through her brother, Dwayne. She says he has enjoyed his vacations at Camp Friendship over the years. From the moment Dwayne is picked up from camp until he is scheduled to go again the next year, he signs and talks about going to camp. His excitement and exuberance for camp is the reason she suggested True Friends. Dorothy knows there are many others who get the same joy from attending True Friends camps and that everyone could use more joy in their lives. In 2015, Luther Automotive has taken their support a step further. They are helping sponsor Camp VIP (Victory in Progress), a special camp session for children and youth with cancer or blood disorders. Not only are they financially supporting the camp, but team members will be volunteering at the camp. We thank Luther Automotive for their enthusiasm, their time and talent, and their donations. They have certainly enhanced the lives of the individuals we serve, helping them benefit from our life-changing programs.

Mel Heckt

True Friends is grateful for the generosity of each and every individual, business, foundation, fund, trust and interest group. Their gifts of time, supplies and money help expand our mission of creating experiences and adventures for children and adults of all abilities. We are especially grateful to Mel Heckt, one of the most well-known ambassadors for people with disabilities, a founder of Camp Friendship and a generous contributor to camp. Soon after the birth of his daughter Janice, in 1951, the Heckts joined together with other families who had children with special Mel Heckt at the Camp Friendship 50th Anniversary Open House needs. Together, these individuals worked tirelessly to improve the living conditions for their children in state hospitals. They also fought to secure funding for a variety of direct care programs, including the establishment of Camp Friendship, now True Friends’ headquarters, in Annandale, Minn. Seeing firsthand the valuable impact of direct service programs, Mel wants to make sure funding is available now and in the future. He named True Friends as a partial beneficiary of an IRA. “It makes sense to use IRA assets for charitable purposes because they would be taxed heavily if transferred to heirs,” stated Mel. He has since decided to accelerate his gift to establish the Heckt Family Endowment Fund, ensuring his lasting legacy at camp.

Milestone

Camp Friendship Turns 50

Camp Friendship started with the purchase of a century-old family resort on Clearwater Lake 50 years ago, thus, fulfilling a dream of creating a place where children and adults with disabilities could enjoy camp activities, make friends and relax in a beautiful outdoor lake setting. Today, tens of thousands of campers later, we can reflect on our journey by celebrating our past, being grateful for the present and sharing our dreams for the future.

Camp Friendship, Annandale, Minnesota The open house to celebrate 50 years of Camp Friendship was an event to remember! The September weather was perfect as hundreds of alumni, campers and supporters gathered to share memories. There were many things to do during the day like boat rides, hay rides, classic camp arts and crafts, a photo booth and more. Guests enjoyed lunch and a short program where they heard from President and CEO Ed Stracke, as well as a long-time camper, Ray. Parent Bernie Friel, whose daughter Kim has been coming to camp for 50 years, also shared her experiences.
