At JEP, education is a pivotal part of our CSR Portfolio, as such, we strongly endorse students dedicated to achieving the highest level of education. In July, JEP sponsored the Annual GSAT Awards for the top performing students in North Central St. Catherine. Led by M.P. for North Central St. Catherine, Natalie Neita Headley, the GSAT Awards in this division has been impacting the lives of students for the past 11 years. JEP has been supporting this initiative for over six years which has assisted in ensuring that students access a good education. This year, we contributed J$300,000 to the success of the Awards Ceremony.

Doctor Bird DG Set #9: Back in Operation, Safe and Sound. On February 08, 2018, an inspection of the DG set #9 (following a trip of the unit) revealed the Doctor Bird team’s

worst fears- the unit had developed a crack in its crankshaft during operation. The implication was instant and immediate in the minds of all. First, to replace a crankshaft, the unit would have to be stripped and rebuilt- a job that could take between 4-6 months and secondly; the sourcing, procurement and the delivery of the crankshaft was expected to take several months. The cost implication of a new crankshaft, liquidated damages, labour and other financial needs were exorbitant. Moreover, the plant had a Dependable Capacity Test (DCT) pending, making the risk of a significant financial impact even more probable. Soon, a Wartsila inspection team visited the site but had no better news to offer. With the inevitable apparent, the project

was charged to Acting Technical Services Manager, Conrad Miller, who was tasked with overall coordination/management of the unit’s restoration. The project lead said the story that followed was one of several challenges, twists and triumphs, and that the project (which saw its conclusion on July 22, 2018) was made possible solely through the support and determination of many key persons spanning the various departments across the JEP organization. Despite still having to perform their substantive roles, the core project team members were required to attend a daily meeting to help coordinate the following needs: • Parts acquisition, tracking and clearance (Purchasing,

informed, there were several key positives that arose from the project. The two main highlights identified were: •
No injuries to personnel or damage to equipment occurred during the repair.
•
There were several innovations by the team to make the repair possible given the small spacing and barge peculiarities. For example, Conrad mentioned that the O&M team designed a metal structure to hold the charge air cooler housing in place during the jacking of the engine. This avoided the need to remove the cooler housing entirely, which would have been risky and complicated. Lifting a cracked crankshaft was also risky, and for that, the team designed a heavy-duty clamp to prevent separation of the crank during the lift.
Machining of engine block In the aftermath of this costly undertaking, the JEP team, of

course, still needs to determine the root cause of this failure. The ultimate aim of which, is to prevent a repeat at any of the three power plants. A big thank you again to all for the tremendous support in getting the DG set #9 back to full operational health.

On July 21, 2018, Bamboo Beach Club welcomed the friends and families of JEP and WKPP to celebrate our annual Family Fun Day. After months of promotions and planning, the Welfare Committee worked tirelessly to execute the “Tropical Bliss themed event. Prior to the fun-filled day, members of the JEP/ WKPP were encouraged to attend via weekly email blasts, meetings and the in-house made tropical photo booth at each location, which created a buzz and sparked interaction among employees.

On the day, staff came out in their numbers, a recordable high to date, resulting in the ordering of extra buses, food and armbands to cater to the high demand. Our Family fun day is a time to celebrate unity and camaraderie among one another; activities included tug of war, dance/deejay competitions, games for children and boat rides. Employees, along with their family and friends, also indulged in delicious cuisine and drinks, enjoyed a swim and the ambience of the beach by relaxing on the comfortable beach chairs provided.

Causes of Prostate Cancer The causes of prostate cancer are not exactly known; however, there are numerous factors that cause a male to have a higher risk of contracting prostate cancer than another. A few of these features include: Age •
As you get older the risk of you getting prostate cancer increases. Most cases of prostate cancer are treated in men 50 years and older.
Ethnic group •
It is sad to say, but prostate cancer is more common in AfricanCaribbean and African descent men other than white men.
Family history •

Symptoms of Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer doesn’t normally show any symptoms in its early stages, however, everyone’s body is different, therefore, you should look out for these symptoms enlisted below: •
Trouble urinating or having to urine often especially at nights
•
Decreased force in the stream of urine i.e. having trouble starting or stopping urine flow
•
Blood in semen or urine
•
Discomfort or stiffness in lower back, hips or ribs.
•
Bone pain
•
Erectile discomfort i.e. pains or burning sensation
Some of these symptoms may be because of ailments other than prostate cancer, so the only way to know is to get examined by a health care provider.
•
Research shows that finding prostate cancer early (when it’s small and hasn’t spread) will help prevent fatalities. But this is not true for all prostate cancers. Therefore, you should get advice from your doctor. Each prostate cancer is different. Many grow slowly and are not likely to be harmful. Men with these prostate cancers probably
require no treatment. Others grow quickly and can cause serious health problems or death, and do require treatment. For now, there’s no easy way to tell which type a man has, so some men get treatment when they don’t need it. And prostate cancer treatments can have serious side effects, including problems with urinary, sexual, and bowel functions. •
This talk about testing should take place at age 50 for men who are at average risk for prostate cancer and are expected to live at least 10 more years.
•
This talk should take place starting at age 45 for men who are at high risk for prostate cancer. This includes African American men and men who have a close relative (father, brother, or son) diagnosed with prostate cancer when they were younger than 65.
•
This talk should take place at age 40 for men at even higher risk – those who had prostate cancer before age

Prevalence of Prostate Cancer Worldwide Martinique had the highest rate of prostate cancer, followed by Norway and France. About 68 % of prostate cancer cases occurred in more developed countries. The highest incidence of prostate cancer was in Oceania and Northern America; and the lowest incidence in Asia and Africa. More than 1.1 million cases of prostate cancer were recorded in 2012, accounting for around 8% of all new cancer cases and 15 per cent in men (World Cancer Research Fund, 2012). The table below shows the top 20 countries with incidences of prostate cancer in the world in the year 2012:
disease, and if caught early can be effectively treated. According to Urologist, Dr. Belinda Morrison, when persons wait until they develop symptoms, it is usually at a more advanced stage and perhaps cannot be cured. This is where we are talking about treatment that can’t cure, but at least try to control the disease, but may not do it successfully for a very long time. Some symptoms of prostate cancer are: difficulty starting urination; weak or interrupted flow of urine; frequent urination, especially at night; difficulty emptying the bladder completely; pain or burning during urination; blood in the urine or semen; pain in the back, hips, or
pelvis that doesn’t go away; and painful ejaculation. According to the Centre for Disease and Control (CDC), two tests are commonly used to screen for prostate cancerdigital rectal exam (DRE) – where a doctor or nurse inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to estimate the size of the prostate and feel for lumps or other abnormalities. The other is the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, where the level of PSA (a substance made by the prostate) is tested. The levels of PSA in the blood can be higher in men who have prostate cancer. Therefore, learn all you can, men and women, so informed decisions can be made about your prostate health.
