WKPP Investigates Leaking Sludge located between the WKPP Day and Storage Tank Farms On June 12, 2018, a small quantity of oil / oily water was observed seeping through a crack in a section of the Storm Water Drain between the WKPP Day & Storage Tank Farm Bunds. This leak, which could have caused grave environmental challenges, was first discovered by Shift Supervisor, Jason Reid and Utility Contractor, Lawrence Smellie, who were determined to contain the spill. On June 13, upon further investigation, by Chief Technical Officer, Cecil Gordon; Maintenance Manager, Giovani Valentine; EHS&S Manager, Lloyd Peak and Chief Utility Contractor, Douglas Waite, small patches of oil-coated aggregate

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR):

FIRST AID Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that everyone — untrained bystanders and medical personnel alike — begin CPR with chest compressions. It’s far better to do something than to do nothing at all if you’re fearful that your knowledge or abilities aren’t 100 percent complete. Remember, the difference between you doing something and doing nothing could be someone’s life. Here’s advice from the AHA: Untrained. If you’re not trained in CPR, then provide hands-only CPR. That means uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120 a minute until paramedics arrive . You don’t need to try rescue breathing. Trained and ready to go. If you’re well-trained and confident in your ability, check to see if there is a pulse and breathing. If there is no breathing or a pulse within 10 seconds, begin chest compressions. Start CPR with 30 chest compressions before giving two rescue breaths. Trained but rusty. If you’ve previously received CPR training but you’re not confident in your abilities, then just do chest compressions at a

Heat Stress Essentials Prevention in Action

Transient Heat Fatigue »» Symptoms: General feeling of tiredness or fatigue. »» First Aid: Fluid replacement and rest. Heat Rash (prickly heat) »» Symptoms: Skin becomes reddened and may itch, feel prickly or hurt. »» First Aid: Practice good personal hygiene; keep the skin clean and the pores unclogged, allow skin to dry, wear loose clothing, see doctor if rash persists. Heat Syncope (fainting) Symptoms: Syncope means “fainting.” First signs are dizziness, feeling light-headed and perhaps nauseous, then the person may faint. Usually occurs in the beginning of heat stress season before the circulation system is adapted. First Aid: Lay victim in a cool location horizontally with feet elevated. If conscious, give fluids. Treatment the same as shock. Heat Cramps: Symptoms: Cramping of either active muscles (arms, legs) or involuntary (usually abdominal) muscles (or both). First Aid: Replenish electrolytes through drinking of fluids such as Gatorade. Rest in a cool environment. Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms: Nausea, dizziness, weakness headache, blurred vision, profuse sweating, cold/wet (clammy) grayish skin, unconsciousness, coma and death. First Aid: Place victim in a prone position in a cool location, administer fluids if the victim is conscious. If unconscious, seek medical care or transport to a medical emergency room.

water or alcohol wipes. Transport to emergency medical facility ASAP! Watch out for each other! A worker heading into a heat stroke will no longer realize what’s happening to him/her It is vital that co-workers be able to recognize what’s happening and intervene Without quick attention, the co-worker may die! Indirect Health Effects: Reduced Work Performance: tired, fatigued workers perform with reduced accuracy, efficiency Increased Accidents: tired, fatigued workers are more susceptible to accident and injury Reproductive Problems: heat has been shown to reduce both male and female fertility and can be a problem for the fetus Heart/Lung Strain: if you already have heart, lung, kidney or circulatory problems; heat stress is an added strain on your body which in severe situation may precipitate serious episodes of acute problems Predisposing Factors: »» very small body size »» overweight »» over 40 years old (the older the more sensitive) »» previous heat illness »» heart disease »» high blood pressure »» diabetes »» inactivity »» physical activity

Stay away from caffeinated carbonated, diet drinks and alcohol as they take water out of your body. Water is the best; juices and/or noncaffeine sport drinks are also good (juices contain energy restoring glucose). Dehydration To prevent dehydration, take advantage of scheduled water breaks! Cooler Fans Purpose of a cooling fan is primarily to increase the rate of sweat evaporation but it also cools by convection if the air is cooler than the skin Fan coolers may interfere with local exhaust ventilation for contaminant control, therefore be careful in where they are placed and how they are pointed Cooler Fans (limitations) »» If the relative humidity is over 75-80% the fan will no longer increase evaporation of sweat »» The closer the air temperature is to skin temperature (35-36°C) the less effective the cooling -if the air temperature exceeds skin temperature then the fan may even heat up the body (like a convection oven)! Personal Protective Equipment Special cooling vests or ice vests have been developed to wear under chemical–resistant suits (use on a case by case basis – they may not work for everyone)

How to measure heat stress using temperature & humidity 1. Find a representative place 2. Find temperature and humidity on chart and read off the Humidex 3. Office Space The offices of the West Kingston facility will soon receive a well-needed space upgrade, thanks to an expansion of the office spaces at that facility. The project will see the addition of just under 3,000 square feet of office space to the existing warehouse facility. The proposed space will be built on top of the ground level offices of the existing building. The area will also be multifunctional and will have an open floor layout to accommodate future design plans. When constructed, employees will be able to access the new offices by a staircase to the side of

the building, as well as a walkway to the south face of the building. Professional drawings have been solicited and presented, detailing the layout of the proposed area. The project has gone out to tender from interested construction companies, taken from a list of companies registered with the Incorporated Masterbuilders Association of Jamaica (IMAJ). The office space will serve to accommodate members of staff for both JEP and WKPP.

JEP and WKPP Contribute To a Healthier Workforce Through Annual Wellness Days At JEP and WKPP, the health of staff is more than just priority. It’s a core value and the basis of success. To demonstrate to staff that this is of paramount importance, annually, the companies invest substantial resources to implement plans geared towards maintaining a healthier and more productive workforce. These plans are all executed through the JEP/WKPP Welfare committees who last year, launched the first Wellness Day at both plants. In addition to providing more nutritious meal options, and introducing programmes aimed at encouraging persons to keep fit and monitor their calorie intake; the companies have successfully promoted the significance of leading healthier lifestyles since the start of the year. On June 1, 2018, the Welfare committee hosted the second staging of Wellness Day at WKPP and on June 22 at the Doctor Bird Facility. Through a variety of health presentations, products and services, employees were reminded how important it is to stay active and eat well. The Health and Wellness Days were, however, not only about diet and exercise. Employees were also educated about spiritual and sexual wellness and why it’s crucial to understand the topics in order to achieve balance and optimum wellness. Other benefits included talks on nutrition and weight management; massages and oxygen therapy as well as supplements and foot detoxes. department continues to promote a healthier lifestyle via the gym, wholesome meal The Welfare Committees implore all,

Are You FINANCIALLY

FIT?

Are you Financially fit? Many of us may have asked ourselves this and other questions at some point in our life. For instance: Are you saving and investing enough? Are you prepared to handle a ‘rainy day’? Is your Pension Plan adequate to provide for your golden years? Is there a fund for your child’s education? To assist with answering these questions and to encourage employees to analyse and improve their financial lifestyle, the JEP/WKPP Welfare Committees planned and executed Financial Wellness Day on June 28 and 29, 2018. JEP and WKPP understand that exposing staff to various financial products and tips is vital and although the first of its kind, promoting smart and secure financial decisions among staff is nothing new. Through various financial presentations from local and international financial institutions, staff benefited from a wealth of information regarding financial products/services, how to save, invest and manage money, prepare for the future as well as how to resolve debt. A few key takeaways included Sagicor’s financial scorecard which allows you to measure your financial fitness; JMMB’s credit clinic which gives you the opportunity to obtain a full credit score/report and Victoria Mutual’s host of pension plans and investment portfolios. In case you missed it and need additional information on a product or service, feel free to speak to a welfare representative at your location.

Women face a number of headwinds before and during retirement to create a perfect storm, typically resulting in dramatically lower financial security in retirement than men. Why do women need more money in retirement? Women have longer retirements. It’s well known that women generally live longer than men, estimated at 2.5 years more from age 65 on. Therefore, they must target a higher level of savings than men to achieve the same level of annual income throughout their entire retirement. Women will spend more time living alone in retirement. Given that women live longer than men, most women will outlive their husbands. This means that they will likely live alone for a number of years, estimated to be 4-5 years in the U.S., without anyone to share expenses.

women lead to lower accumulated savings and also lower matching contributions from employers in pension plans. In addition to the pay gap for the same jobs, women typically hold more lower paying positions than men, which acts as a barrier to career progression and pay equity. For example, less than a quarter of people in senior managerial positions in the US are women. In certain more casual, lower paid roles, women may not even qualify for entry into company pension plans, meaning that their contributions are not just smaller but nonexistent. Women take fewer risks with their investments. Research by consultants Mercer indicates that women are less confident about taking control of their finances and tend to take fewer risks when choosing investment funds. As a result, women are
