For the last 34 years, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has worked to transform Pittsburgh’s Cultural District as a presenter, real estate manager, developer, supporter, collaborator, and curator. In 2017, the Cultural Trust flourished as an arts creator and cultivator – building its own art and breaking ground for fresh, local art projects.

2017 Report to the Community

None of what we have cultivated would be possible without the keystone of our abiding members, foundations, corporations, and public officials. Our special thanks to Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Benter Foundation, Cohen & Grigsby, Colcom Foundation, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Dollar Bank, Eden Hall Foundation, EQT Foundation, Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald, Giant Eagle, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, The Heinz Endowments, Highmark, Richard King Mellon Foundation, UPMC | UPMC Health Plan, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, The Pittsburgh Foundation, PNC Foundation, Vibrant Pittsburgh, and our local elected officials, among many others. HELLO FRIENDS AND PARTNERS! We had quite a year of growth in 2017! Thanks to you, our volunteers, donors, members, supporters, and guests, we laid further groundwork for prospering art in our city. Perennial dedication to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District resulted in a year of exciting improvements in the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s brick and mortar spaces, increased support of our resident companies, and climbing numbers in arts event attendance and support. A part of the Cultural Trust’s mission has always been to cultivate the city’s cultural and economic development, and we focused here in 2017 by presenting the best art from around the world and enabling the artists rooted here. In 2017, we experienced some of the highest membership and attendance numbers in our history, surpassing the 11,000 member mark. Our theaters and art spaces also saw an abundance of visitors, as PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh Series subscriptions reached a 20-year high, the Trust Cabaret Series sold out on subscriptions and second performances were added by popular demand, and the Pittsburgh Humanities Festival tripled its attendance. We showcased the best of the best from around the world, which includes homegrown art from our city. We commissioned Jumping Jack Theater’s first sensoryfriendly work, featured artists from the Pittsburgh region at Multiple Choice: Locally Sourced, and showcased local, world-class jazz musicians at the free BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive every Tuesday. Through Non-Punk Pittsburgh at SPACE, we presented an installation curated by local artists, photographers, and musicians.

Our newest renovation project that began in 2016 came to fruition this year for 943 Liberty Avenue. PPG Colorful Communities™ helped us put on the last coat of paint in August 2017, allowing Arcade Comedy Theater to move into this larger space and advance the art of comedy and improv in Pittsburgh. We also supported the residential and retail development of the Eighth Street block, and helped the City of Pittsburgh keep Downtown safe by leasing our Lantern Building as a new Cultural District police substation. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was proud to end the year by announcing a bright future for the August Wilson Center for African American Culture. We continued to provide management and facility services, and program performing arts in the Center and fill its gallery spaces through our Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement Department, led by then Cultural Trust VP Janis Burley Wilson. Following this leadership and experience at the Cultural Trust, she was appointed President and CEO of the August Wilson Center in the summer of 2017. We are honored to have been a part of the August Wilson Center’s programming and mission over the last few years, and are excited for what’s in store under Janis’ practiced leadership. All that we treasure in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District is made possible by our base of more than 1,500 volunteers. To those who serve through our Board of Trustees, Advisory Boards, Committees, usher programs, events, and festivals – thank you for your perpetual support of and belief in the arts.

In 2017, the Cultural Trust renovated 943 Liberty Avenue, creating an expanded performance and education venue for Pittsburgh’s nonprofit Arcade Comedy Theater. 943 Liberty Avenue was one of the last properties participating in red-light activities before the Cultural Trust purchased it in 2007.

The Cultural Trust signed a lease with the City of Pittsburgh to house an expanded Zone 2 police substation in the Lantern Building at 600 Liberty Avenue, providing an improved police presence in the heart of downtown.

As Arcade Comedy Theater consistently sold out its 811 Liberty Avenue theater, the Cultural Trust started to develop a concept for a two-theater home at 943 Liberty Avenue. The renovation broke ground in 2016, was completed in November 2017, and Arcade Comedy Theater celebrated with a grand opening weekend of shows.

To close 2017 and further celebrate this partnership, the Cultural Trust and Arcade Comedy came together in a new way. The Cultural Trust produced its first film, It’s A Wonderful District. This riff on It’s A Wonderful Life imagined downtown Pittsburgh without the Cultural District, and starred Arcade Comedy Theater actors.

2017 EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS (CONTINUED)

In 2017 Trust Arts Education served 21,751 participants across 3,416 program sessions. Teaching Artists spent more than 4,600 hours providing programs for educators, children, and patrons. Professional Development opportunities were provided for 1,126 educators and approximately 12,000 students participated in workshops and residencies. Nearly 3,000 students received free or discounted tickets to talks, workshops, and events related to performances. With support from the PNC Foundation, the Arts Education Department commissioned Anqwenique Wingfield, James Johnson III, and Douglas Levine to create performances focused on jazz for children ages three to five. During the performances, children explored elements of rhythm, dynamics, and tempo through various styles of jazz music. In partnership with Carnegie Science Center, Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, the Cultural Trust continued its support of BUZZWORD Pittsburgh, as the program entered its fourth year. The success of this multi-city vocabulary program garnered a two-year extension from PNC Foundation and the Heinz Endowments.

The Arts Education Department presented Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks’ performance of Supernatural Shakespeare. This innovative, multi-media performance explored how the Bard intertwines the real with the magical throughout his cannon of work. Jumping Jack Theater’s first multi-sensory adventure for young audiences on the autism spectrum, The Light Princess was also presented by Arts Education. This world premiere production told the story of a princess born without gravity through innovative puppetry, lush settings, and an original score.

The Cultural Trust welcomed Allegheny Health Network as a sponsor of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh 2018.

With support from The Colcom Foundation, a new bike corral was installed by the Cultural District restaurant, Condado.

nb o

d an

In support of local artist Nathan Doverspike, the Cultural Trust commissioned an illustration entitled Trust Island. The design is now used on Cultural Trust membership theater cups, available at the Byham Theater and Benedum Center.

The Umbrella Sky Project, an artistic umbrella canopy, added even more creative energy to the 2017 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. This vibrant installation was made possible through funding from The Colcom Foundation and the Laurel Foundation, and became a popular gathering place featured in many guests’ photographs.

Sa

m

The Benter Foundation and Richard E. Rauh, both avid supporters of the Trust Cabaret Series, funded special add-ons to the Series in 2017. In April, The Benter Foundation brought ‘the gold standard of open mic nights,’ Jim Caruso’s Cast Party, to the Cabaret at Theater Square, where local performers were welcomed to take the stage. In September, Richard E. Rauh underwrote a special, sold-out engagement of Tony Award winner Kelli O’Hara at the August Wilson Center for a sold-out performance.

As part of the revitalization of 943 Liberty Avenue, the Cultural Trust received generous support from PPG through its COLORFUL COMMUNITIES™ program. Twenty-five PPG volunteers spent approximately 100 volunteer hours working in the new Arcade Comedy Theater space, including painting with 155 gallons of donated PPG PAINTS™ MANOR HALL® product.

av id

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust exceeded $13 million in annual fundraising in 2017, which was in large part thanks to more than 11,000 members contributing to the annual campaign and recordhigh participation by Pittsburgh Cultural Trust employees in the staff giving campaign.
