BUILDING A LEGACY OF INNOVATION...

In even the most turbulent times, art has the power to rejuvenate the spirit and soothe the soul. While it resonates differently in each of us, art transcends all barriers, allowing us to see the world in new ways and to see ourselves in one another. At its best, art is what makes us human— and what makes us whole.

“Look around, look around…at how lucky we are to be alive right now…”

In 2019, the Trust’s visual arts galleries featured groundbreaking exhibitions that challenged long-held perceptions and culturally biased assumptions. Through this celebration of innovation and diversity, our galleries showcased the transcendent power of art. Audiences were moved, curiosity was sparked, and we enjoyed increased attendance and engagement.

In January, Wood Street Galleries presented Infi nity Room, an immersive experience conceived by award-winning artist

Refi k Anadol, which utilized contemporary algorithms, moving projections, light, sound, and mirrors. The audio/visual installation induced a state of consciousness in which the subject’s awareness of physical self was transformed. Infi nity Room reimagines the conventional fl at cinema projection screen as a three-dimensional and seemingly infi nite space, blurring the boundaries between actual/fi ctional and physical/virtual. Istanbulborn Anadol conceived the project in 2015 as an “opportunity to freshly perceive ourselves and the world around us.”

Anadol’s Liminality 3.0 was commissioned by the Trust as a world premiere at Wood Street Galleries in 2019. In Liminality 3.0, the poetics of light bending is explored. Inspired by Isaac Newton’s experiments with light, the installation bent laser light in unpredictable angles to create an architectural light and soundscape. As the recipient of a number of awards and prizes, including Microsoft Research’s Best Vision Award and Google’s Art and Machine Intelligence Artist Residency Award, Anadol’s work explores how perception and experience of time and space are radically changing now that machines have all but colonized our everyday lives.

In March, 937 Gallery featured the exhibition, We Are All Related, by local portrait photographer, Andrea London. The exhibition was comprised of portraits of a diverse crosssection of area residents, including a variety of ages, skin colors, national origins and sexual identities. Compelled to combat the racism and xenophobia she was witnessing in 2016, London sought to show that “we are all connected on a very fundamental human level”—despite all of our perceived differences.
