BUILDING A LEGACY OF PROMISE...

The Trust’s Arts Education Department continued to act as a positive force for transformation through education for the people and communities that our programs serve. In 2019, we continued to look to the future by building upon our past with new partnerships, innovative performances, and research-informed arts integration programming.

“I know that we can win, I know that greatness lies in you.”

2019 HIGHLIGHTS

The Trust Arts Education Department kicked off 2019 by hosting nearly 2,700 students as part of the Hamilton Education Program sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The program, known as EduHam, dedicated what would have been a public performance of Hamilton to a fullcapacity audience of students and educators from 41 Title I high schools across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. The program also included an innovative curriculum about the Founding Era, with a select number of students being chosen to create and perform Hamilton-inspired original songs, poems, and dramatic scenes on the Benedum stage. In addition, Hamilton cast members held a question-and-answer session with students following the show. Mayor William Peduto provided support for EduHam by securing the David L. Lawrence Convention Center as the lunch venue for the students. Dr. Kymberly Cruz, Arts Education Senior Program Officer for Pittsburgh Public Schools, coordinated participation from 800 students from Pittsburgh Public High Schools. The Hamilton Education Program was launched with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation, the producers of Hamilton, the Miranda family, and the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. With substantial support from the Trust and these funders, tickets for the Hamilton education program special performance were only $10 each.

STEAM Workshop

Our Trust Arts Education Center was fully activated during National Arts in Education Week in September. This annual celebration recognizes the transformative power of the arts in education. Created by Congress in 2010, the program supports equitable access to the arts for all students. During this year’s celebration, we launched a StoryCorner series, offering free arts-integrated sessions each morning for young children and their caregivers. A public chalk mural was installed on the sidewalk that included playful elements to further engage families and children as they passed by.

In October, we launched The Poetry Project, an innovative program which explored poetry as a springboard for performances that are designed specifically for teen audiences. Our inaugural show, Edgar Allan Poe: Master of Macabre, presented an immersive, multi-media theatrical experience, where audiences contributed to the artistry of the show.

In 2019, we saw significant growth in our professional development programs with new topics, new partners, and many new teachers. We also deepened our engagement and support of Trust Arts Teaching Artists through a robust offering of professional development opportunities, including a lending library of books and materials to reduce financial burdens, an online database to share resources and foster community, and an annual Continuing Education Reimbursement to support individual professional development needs.

We established a partnership with Dreams of Hope, Pittsburgh’s only artsfocused organization for queer and allied youth. Dreams of Hope is in its eighteenth season of generating radical, healing, and groundbreaking art. This new partnership provided an opportunity to increase and expand educational offerings for youth, as well as create a central location for participants to gather and work creatively. During this residency in the Trust Arts Education Center, Dreams of Hope increased the vibrancy of the Cultural District by programming a series of playwriting workshops, readings, and performances.

In 2019, Trust Arts Education programs served 26,676 people of all ages throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region. Trust teaching artists led 3,895 hours of arts-integrated and educational programs, including a wide variety of pre- and post-show talks, single session workshops, multi-session residencies, performances, and professional development events.
