2019 HIGHLIGHTS
In 2019, we celebrated the fi fteenth anniversary of the BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive Series, which continues to bring free, weekly jazz performances to the heart of the Cultural District—featuring many of the region’s fi nest jazz artists, as well as ticketed performances showcasing nationally and internationally recognized artists. The world-class musicianship of participating JazzLive artists is complemented by the talents of emcee, Bob Studebaker, who has been a part of the series since its inception in 2004. To celebrate the milestone anniversary of JazzLive, we bookended the year with major celebrations, including a party with a special jam session hosted by Roger Humphries’ + RH Factor in January, and a New Year’s Eve celebration featuring Roger Humphries’ Big Band at the end of the year. We also marked the expansion of the BNY Mellon Presents JazzLive ticketed series beyond April’s Jazz Appreciation Month, to present nationally recognized jazz artists throughout the year. This year’s season included the Ron Carter Quartet, An Evening with Kenny Garrett, the Shamie Royston Quintet and the Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra Holiday Concert Featuring Sean Jones with Special Guest René Marie.
We proudly presented guitarist Joe Negri with the annual JazzLive Legacy Award in recognition of his role and signifi cant contribution to jazz in Pittsburgh. The award was presented to Negri during a Jazz Appreciation Month concert at the Greer Cabaret Theater, featuring the Ron Carter Quartet.
In February, we welcomed alternative R&B, neo-soul group, Moonchild, to the Trust Arts Education Center for a special concert. Immediately following the concert, an after-party co-hosted by Pittsburgh based promotional group, Make Sure You Have Fun™ was held in The Graeme House, located in downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square.
In March, in celebration of Women’s History Month, we partnered with Robert Morris University’s Women’s Leadership and Mentorship Program to present the opening reception for the Fourth Annual Women & Transformational Leadership Symposium. Demetria Boccella, founder of Fashion Africana and 2019 Trust Humanities Festival Core Conversation participant, delivered the reception’s keynote address on celebrating black beauty through the art of inclusion.
Our Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement department marked the fi rst night of the 60th Anniversary of the Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival with the Festival’s fi rst ever opening night after-party—Critical Mass. Immediately following the Festival’s India.Arie concert, the audience was treated to this high-energy street party just outside of Point State Park, on the Stanwix Stage. The Critical Mass after party was created to engage more diverse audiences with the Festival and featured the DJ performance group, UNION which showcases three of the city’s top DJs on stage at the same time: DJ Big Phill, DJ Blakk Steel, and DJ Selecta.
Through our quarterly Gallery Crawls, the Trust continued to invigorate the Cultural District with innovative art in traditional and nontraditional spaces. Our visual arts galleries were energized by diverse audiences and exhibitions, while outdoor spaces were activated with public art, music, and performing art. The fall Crawl featured a one-night-only World Market in partnership with All for All artisan network, which showcased one-of-a-kind original art from many of the region’s fi nest artisans, representing the African Diaspora, and some of the region’s immigrant communities.
Art in the Alley
Our Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement department established its new mission and vision to redefi ne the department’s focus and to align with the Trust’s new strategic direction. Departmental efforts were concentrated on identifying gaps in audience representation, building new partnerships, and creating audience development initiatives to address them. Two examples of 2019’s new strategic partners include Shuman Juvenile Detention Center and ACH Clear Pathways. The partnership with Shuman Juvenile Detention Center was established to present Liberty Magic artist, Billy Kidd, for a special performance and workshop series at the center for its residents and staff. The partnership with youth arts organization, ACH Clear Pathways, was formed in an effort to expand the reach of Highmark First Night Pittsburgh’s puppetmaking workshops in the city’s Hill District. Through the development of new relationships with strategic partners, such as these, the Trust can ensure that its connections to our communities continue to fl ourish.
