THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST

MAKING AN IMPACT IN 2006 AND BEYOND

T

his year was one of the most invigorating and eventful in The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 22-year history. The growing vibrancy of the Cultural District reflects the Trust’s unyielding vision for a world-class arts and entertainment destination. In 2006, the Cultural District was home to more than 1,700 events, exhibitions and programs, drawing more than 1.1 million people. Looking past over the last 10 years, the Trust has come a long way. In the late 1990s, the options for entertainment were extremely limited. In fact, we only sold 70% of the tickets then that we do now, attracting a fraction of today’s audiences. And the area was all but void of full-time residents. Through the leadership of our board, close collaboration with our Cultural District Community and the outstanding support of local leaders and our generous funders, the Cultural District now thrives with visitors, residents, workers, students and artists. From the expanding District arts and entertainment offerings and the growth of arts education at CAPA to increased District parking capacity

and a burgeoning downtown residential community — as shown by The Encore on 7th’s remarkable 97% capacity —The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is making an impact. The work of the Trust has helped establish Pittsburgh as one of America’s greatest arts and entertainment destinations, recently recognized as #1 Among Mid-Sized Cities in American Style Magazine’s annual readers’ poll of the Top 25 Arts Destinations. The Trust’s efforts also helped Pittsburgh to earn the #1 distinction as “most livable” city by Places Rated Almanac. Our challenge now is to grow the District and make it an even more desirable place to live, work and play. The success we’ve achieved over the last 10 years gives us confidence that we can meet this challenge. The momentum over the last year, chronicled in this annual report, is a testament to the Trust’s commitment to lead the way. In 2006, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust made landmark strides in the Cultural District’s ongoing development with the announcement of its RiverParc project. Thanks to the proven determination of trustees and generous support of many funders—such as The Heinz Endowments, The Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation and The Richard King Mellon Foundation, among others—the addition of RiverParc will garner positive, international attention for the city, contributing to the cultural environment for our region. On the programming front, some highlights from last year include: The PNC Broadway Across America – Pittsburgh series exceeding record ticket sales for Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and Monty Python’s Spamalot; the Dance Council’s best-attended season to date, marked by a 20% increase in season subscriptions, with special thanks to the Dance Council’s first season sponsor, First Commonwealth; and the

world-renowned Gate Theatre of Ireland in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot in a performance hosted by only eight cities nationwide. The Cultural District visual arts scene blossomed in 2006 with the addition of Magnolias for Pittsburgh, a public art installation by Chicago-based sculptor Tony Tasset. Located in the Seventh Street and Penn Avenue Parklet, the hand-sculpted bronze Magnolias… is part of a $2 million public art program established by the Sports & Exhibition Authority, with support from The Vira I. Heinz Endowment, The Hillman Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Richard King Mellon Foundation and an anonymous donor. Capping the year, tens of thousands of children and adults celebrated New Year’s Eve at the Trust’s First Night® Pittsburgh. Hats off to Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield for coming on board as lead sponsor of First Night Pittsburgh 2007. We are thrilled and grateful that Highmark has agreed to be our First Night lead sponsor for 2008. As we look ahead, the Trust is moving forward with the Australia Festival—a progressive, multi-disciplinary showcase of the arts from Down Under—launching in the fall of 2007. Other anticipated performances include Disney’s The Lion King and the Pittsburgh premiere of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo, among thousands of Cultural District events offering something for everyone throughout the year. A HEARTFELT THANKS TO YOU The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Cultural District would not exist without our generous donors and supporters — The Allegheny Regional Asset District, The Buhl Foundation, The Claude WorthingtonBenedum Foundation, Eden Hall Foundation, First Commonwealth,

HIGHLIGHTS

RIVERPARC MAKING AN IMPACT UPON THE FUTURE OF DOWNTOWN’S RESIDENTIAL LANDSCAPE

In July 2006, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust completed a 12-month process to determine the winning design for its Cultural District Riverfront Development and Design Competition. The Trust chose the RiverParc team—led by master developer Concord Eastridge Inc., and a world-class design team comprising Behnisch Architekten, Architects Alliance, Gehl Architects, Transsolar and WTW Architects — to design and develop the six-acre site. RiverParc, a $460 million project, is bounded by Fort Duquesne Boulevard, overlooking the Allegheny River, Penn Avenue, and Seventh and Ninth Streets. RiverParc represents the nation's first master-planned "green," mixed-use, arts/residential neighborhood, providing approximately 700 new residential units and creating 9,200 potential jobs for the region.

“ RiverParc is one of the most significant urban planning developments in the nation.”

A key component of Concord Eastridge’s winning design calls for LEED-certified and environmentally sensitive buildings, numerous parks and green spaces both inside the buildings and in the public realm, vertical winter gardens and roof terraces, and the addition of gallery space. The new plan proposes an innovative capping to cover the Tenth Street By-pass and to establish a park facing the riverfront. It will provide an important connection to the river and offer multiple athletic, recreational and vending opportunities to service river-goers. The plaza could also include a multi-use floating stage for special events. RiverParc images created by Behnisch Architekten of Stuttgart, Germany

arts organizations based in the Cultural District. The Shared Services community includes Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

2006 Highlights Shared Services e-mail marketing programs resulted in 121 e-mail campaigns, encompassing over 750,000 electronic messages promoting Cultural District events. Shared Services launched three joint seasonal District brochures, promoting 18 different Cultural District events to more than 180,000 households generating $300,000 in sales. The Shared Services–sponsored smART database was utilized nearly 250 times by District arts organizations to support their respective strategic marketing efforts. Cultural District collaborative ad

32

THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST

Shared Services funded and distributed 75,000 Cultural District “grab and go” monthly calendars in 2006, promoting all events and the District as a destination.

A comprehensive, monthly listing of Cultural District events is distributed throughout the city.

The Shared Services model for the arts drew inquiries from seven other cities aware of the successful collaborative efforts in Pittsburgh. Shared Services’ initiatives, ranging from purchasing office supplies and processing credit cards to joint marketing and printing programs and comprehensive health insurance, have consistently helped participating groups to avoid costs and receive improved services. The return on investment for 2006, conservatively stated, exceeds 35%.

The Trust’s investment in Tessitura — a comprehensive suite of ticketing, marketing, development and fundraising tools to share information and increase productivity—expanded beyond the Cultural District in 2006 to include City Theater and Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council arts organizations. In 2007, Opera Theater of Pittsburgh will join the rapidly expanding list of non-profits interested in taking advantage of this cuttingedge customer relationship management tool.

All of the AWC’s activities and operations will be housed in a striking, two-story, “green” building.

Breaking new ground in the Cultural District

The AWC celebrates African American culture through innovative, world-class presentations of performing and visual arts, as well as interdisciplinary education and public programs. In 2006, the AWC impacted the arts and cultural scene with another acclaimed season of programming in Cultural District theaters and the AWC’s Gallery 209/9. These programs showcased national and local artists and performers through a diverse mix of music, theater, spoken word and visual art experiences that were presented by the AWC, or co-presented with community partners.

“ It’s great to collaborate with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust to bring diverse programming to the region, and we look forward to serving as a gateway to the Cultural District when our new building opens in 2008.”

FINANCIALS

THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST 2006 Built upon a solid financial foundation, efficient operations and a proven record of successful initiatives, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust continues to emerge as a world-class leader through its ability to integrate cultural and economic development. In 2006, the Trust fostered financial stability with ongoing sustainable growth. The Trust maintains its financial viability by effectively managing risk, ensuring organizational development, and developing opportunities for earned income while continuing fundraising efforts.

Charity Navigator, which is notably America’s largest independent charity evaluator, awarded The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust three consecutive, four-star ratings, for “its ability to efficiently allocate and grow its finances.” Less than 12% of the over 5000 charities annually evaluated by Charity Navigator receives even two consecutive four-star ratings.
