The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review names Teatro De Los Sentidos: El Eco De La Sombra (Theater of the Senses: The Echo of the Shadow) the Number 1 theater event of 2008.

The August Wilson Center for African American Culture joins the Trust’s Shared Services network of Cultural District organizations.

October Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts presents an exclusive line-up of U.S. premieres by acclaimed visual and performing artists from around the world, reinforcing Pittsburgh as a major arts and entertainment destination.

The Trust celebrates National Jazz Appreciation Month and Pittsburgh’s 250th Anniversary with the Living Legends series.

The Annual Gala marks the most successful one in the Trust’s history, attracting over 500 attendees and raising close to $600,000 in support of the Trust’s mission in the Cultural District.

t was a momentous year for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and the Cultural District. In keeping with our mission to make Pittsburgh a great place to live, work and play, the Trust presented world-class productions and U.S. Premieres and expanded our programming.

The Trust affirms its long-term commitment to the Cultural District Riverfront Development by announcing a revised phasing sequence for the project.

January The Trust’s First Night® Pittsburgh 2008 officially launches Pittsburgh’s 250th Anniversary with more than 40,000 revelers in attendance.

November March Rosebud Fine Food Market and Deli

February A Pittsburgh premiere, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo gives two stunning performances of Cinderella at the Benedum Center.

At last a grocery story in the Cultural District! Rosebud Fine Food Market and Deli, located on the ground floor of the Encore on 7th, opens for business. Café Zao celebrates its 4th anniversary with a special, four-week celebration.

June RUST (Radical Urban Silkscreen Team), a project of The Andy Warhol Museum and Artists Image Resource, works with area youth to create silkscreen prints celebrating Pittsburgh’s history, heritage, culture and people at the Trust’s 820 Liberty Avenue property. Café Zao introduces a sold-out cooking school series for area foodies.

PNC Broadway Across America – Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts (PIFOF) October 10 - 25 Rudresh Mahanthappa

An amalgam of genre-bending performance and visual art, juxtaposing film, theater, dance, music, and classical and modern art forms, PIFOF was a crowning achievement for the Trust. The 16-day festival reached 77% audience capacity, 50% of whom were between the ages of 19 and 35. Most PIFOF performances were sold-out and attracted visitors from the U.K., Canada and various regions in the U.S. The Trust thanks The Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh 250 for their support of PIFOF.

In 2008, Broadway subscriptions soared to 11,239 subscribers. This year marked the highest attended Broadway series in 16 years, attracting 351,348 patrons to the 11-show, 154-performance series.

The Trust kicked off PNC Grow Up Great Week by hosting over 175 pre-school children at the Benedum Center.

Crazy Mocha Crazy Mocha Coffee Company opened for business at 801 Liberty Avenue and quickly established itself as the flagship location of a 20-store chain. Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Arts Education Center Construction at 805-807 Liberty Avenue continued at a steady pace and is expected open in late 2009. Rosebud Fine Food Market and Deli The first grocery store to open Downtown in two decades, Rosebud opens on the ground floor of the Encore on 7th in the Cultural District. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust The Trust’s performance venues and gallery spaces were utilized for more than 400 special events during 2008.

First Night Pittsburgh 2009 Tens of thousands of revelers braved frigid conditions to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the Trust’s First Night® Pittsburgh 2009. This year, First Night had a record number of venues, artists, community workshops and the most diverse programming to date. In addition to two fireworks displays, First Night® offered more than 125 family-friendly events — dance, music, comedy, theater, visual arts and hands-on art activities — at over 45 locations throughout the Cultural District. The Trust’s Marketing and Communications Department acts as an in-house agency to support all areas of the organization in spreading the word about the events and programs that attract over 2 million people to Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. 2008 Highlights Pittsburgh Quarterly The Trust partnered with Pittsburgh Quarterly Magazine to produce a performing and visual arts calendar which was printed in-line with the magazine’s content and over-printed and distributed throughout the region to shine a spotlight on the Cultural District year-round.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra The world-class PSO has been a vital part of Pittsburgh’s heritage for over 100 years. Under the leadership of Music Director Manfred Honeck, the PSO continues its noble history of working with the finest conductors and musicians, and its strong commitment to artistic quality and excellence.
