MARKED THE PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST’S 25TH YEAR of dedicated service in the Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. H.J. “Jack” Heinz II and the Heinz Family spurred the formation of the Trust and the development of the Cultural District. Words cannot adequately express our gratitude to the Trust’s founding President and CEO Carol Brown for carrying out Heinz’s vision with her bold direction, commitment and brilliant leadership. We thank Carol, along with all of the past Trust chairs and trustees, for their collective, extraordinary service. We also thank long-standing trustee Suzy Broadhurst for spearheading the Trust’s 25th anniversary celebrations in July and October, and CONSOL Energy Inc. for its generous 25th anniversary sponsorship. The Trust’s mission to advance Pittsburgh as a great place to live, work and play was manifested throughout 2009. Highlights included:
• The Trust did not experience a deficit despite a difficult economy. In fact, since our inception in 1984, the Trust has maintained a balanced budget for 25 consecutive years.
The Trust honors its Founders and Heroes at a special 25th Anniversary reception in July. Shown here from left to right: Michael Watson, Albert L. Filoni, Peter Mathieson representing Andrew Mathieson, Barbara Ackerman representing Allen Berkman, Robert B. Pease, Edith H. Fisher, James E. Rohr, Carol R. Brown, Jane C. Arkus, George A. Davidson Jr., Edward H. Harrell
The James E. Rohr Building at 805-807 Liberty Avenue emerges as the Trust Arts Education Center. Shown here from left to right: Jim Rohr, Suzy Broadhurst, Carol Brown.
• Three major facilities opened in the Cultural District. The James E. Rohr Building at 805-807 Liberty Avenue was unveiled as the permanent home for the Trust’s Education and Community Engagement’s programs and activities. The Century Building, a mixed workforce/market rate residential development opened at 130 7th Street and quickly filled its 60 units. The August Wilson Center for African American Culture opened at 980 Liberty Avenue, providing an architecturally stunning District gateway.
• The 50th anniversary of Three Rivers Arts Festival, now a program of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, was distinguished by a welcomed return to Point State Park. The jam-packed, 10-day festival included more than 500 artists and performers and more than 100 events.
• The Trust, with Duquesne Light, presented Pittsburgh Festival of Lights as part of the Trust’s 25th anniversary and in celebration of the historic G-20 Pittsburgh Summit in the Cultural District. The Cultural District was illuminated with breathtaking works of art. The Trust hosted a series of pre-G-20 performances animating the District with programming reflecting the region’s multicultural diversity and artistic talent.

• More than 450 friends gathered at the Benedum Center for The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust 25th Anniversary Gala, “Creating A Scene.” It was a momentous occasion as we honored the Trust founders and champions and celebrated their lasting contributions to the Cultural District.
• PNC Broadway Across America – Pittsburgh enjoyed
In friendship, with gratitude,
Kenneth R. Melani, M.D. Chairman, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust President and CEO, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield
a stellar season, with sold out performance runs for JERSEY BOYS and RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR® starring THE ROCKETTES®. The Trust applauds PNC for its continued partnership. Today more than 2,000,000 people visit the Cultural District annually. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust could not have reached a quarter of a century of service without you. Everything the Trust has accomplished — and all that we continue to do in the Cultural District — would not be possible without your confidence and support. Thank you.
