The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust (the Trust) was established in 1984 to help revitalize the Pittsburgh region through the creation and ongoing development of the Downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. HIGHLIGHTS For the second year in a row, the Trust partnered with Duquesne Light to present Pittsburgh Festival of Lights. Noted UK creative director and projection artist Ross Ashton unveiled four major installations, taking visitors on an illuminating trail throughout the Cultural District.

2010 was one of the best-selling years on record for PNC Broadway Across America -Pittsburgh. This series featured a mix of classics, such as the Tony Award®-winning Best Musical Revival, South Pacific; the return of the world-wide blockbuster The Phantom of the Opera for its final tour, which played to more than 86,000 patrons; and the TonyAward®-winning Best Play, August: Osage County. Cell Phone Disco, an interactive, public art installation commissioned by the Trust and funded by The Fine Foundation, lights up Tito Way in the Cultural District. The Pittsburgh Dance Council presents the return of Pilobolus and Complexions and sees a 10% increase in subscriptions. The Trust thanks First Commonwealth for its continued support of The Pittsburgh Dance Council. Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater’s Family Series celebrates its 40th season. Giant Eagle becomes the first-ever Presenting Sponsor of the Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival, and the Festival receives a special endowment gift from the Hilda M. Willis Foundation.

The Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents series presents Esperanza Spalding. The jazz star went on to win the GRAMMY® Award for Best New Artist. The Trust hosts the International Performing Arts for Youth Showcase, welcoming more than 400 theater professionals worldwide, many of them first-time visitors to the Cultural District.

Supporting the Trust’s efforts to make its facilities available to patrons with disabilities, the FISA Foundation provides funding to gather, compile and disseminate information about accessibility features of the seven Cultural District theaters. The goal is to help make the District more welcoming for all patrons. The Trust makes the strategic acquisition of the 119 Sixth Street property (formerly Bally’s Total Fitness) for future use. The property’s adjacencies to the Trust’s Byham and O’Reilly Theaters and Theater Square complement the Trust’s ongoing development of the Cultural District. Dollar Bank becomes a multi-year Presenting Sponsor of Three Rivers Arts Festival.

Electronic ticket scanners are introduced at Cultural District theaters to help protect patrons against counterfeit tickets, ensure better patron service at performances and improve the collection and management of patron information. CulturalDistrict.org, a onestop shop for the Cultural District, allows visitors to view seats in relation to the stage before purchasing tickets, and use one account for all Cultural District purchases. The Trust launches ParkPGH, Pittsburgh’s first real-time parking system, which helps patrons to find available parking using mobile technology. ParkPGH is funded by The Benter Foundation with the following partners: Carnegie Mellon University’s Traffic21 initiative supported by the Hillman Foundation, ALCO Parking, Pittsburgh Parking Authority, Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Deeplocal, Inc. The Benedum Center sets the stage for a national taping of An Oldies Spectacular, a classic rock and roll music showcase to benefit PBS and WQED-TV. The program spans more than 80 performances taped over three days.

Flatscreen TVs are installed in the Trust’s Benedum Center and VisitPittsburgh’s Welcome Center at Fifth Avenue Place to promote Trust performing and visual arts programming.

Western PA Conservancy donates 100 hanging flower baskets for the Cultural District and plants 40 replacement street trees in partnership with TreeVitalize Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust ushered in the new year with its best ever First Night ® Pittsburgh. In 2010, The Sharp Edge, a well-known Pittsburgh beer lovers’ haven, opened a new gathering spot at 922 Penn Avenue in the Cultural District, adding to a growing cluster of successful restaurants and bars located in the 900 block of Penn Avenue.

REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT True to its mission, in 2010, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust led mindful development and beautification initiatives in the Cultural District.

The Century Building, an historic residential loft collaboration between the Trust and TREK Development Group, won AIA Pittsburgh’s Historic Preservation Award and the 10,000 Friends Gold Commonwealth Award. The building’s Bicycle Commuter Center, which opened in 2010, immediately sold out all leases and won the AIA of California’s Merit Award.

The Western PA Conservancy donated 100 hanging flower baskets for placement in the Cultural District and invited the Trust to serve on its Concept Design Committee for Gateway Median Islands, a verdant, downtown entryway near the Fort Pitt Bridge. The Trust hosted TreeVitalize Pittsburgh’s tree planting kickoff on World Environment Day at the Trust’s Agnes R. Katz Plaza. TreeVitalize planted 40 new replacement street trees in the Cultural District. Katz Plaza also served as the launch site for “Car Free Fridays” on National Bike to Work Day.

Sweetlix, a frozen yogurt hot spot, opened a store at 820 Liberty Avenue, next door to its owner Pittsburgh Popcorn. The Trust strategically acquired 119 Sixth Street property (formerly Bally’s Total Fitness) for future repurposing. The property’s adjacencies to the Trust’s Byham and O’Reilly Theaters and Theater Square complement the Trust’s ongoing development of the Cultural District.

August Wilson Center for African American Culture

In efforts to preserve, present and celebrate the art, culture and history of African Americans locally and throughout the world, the August Wilson Center offers multiple exhibition galleries, a 486-seat theater, a cultivation center, seven art galleries and dazzling space for community programs and events in the Cultural District at 980 Liberty Avenue. In 2010, André Kimo Stone Guess was named President and CEO of the Center.

DEVELOPMENT The Trust raised $11 million in 2010 (compared with $8.4 million in 2009) to support Trust operations, capital projects, special projects, the Cultural District community and the purchase of the 119 Sixth Street property (formerly Bally’s Total Fitness). Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh The Byham Theater set the stage for Pittsburgh’s best summer bash to benefit the Trust. More than 700 people attended Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh, which helped to raise more than $48,000.

First Night® Pittsburgh

First Night® Pittsburgh garnered the most financial support in the history of the event, thanks in part to lead sponsor Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and new First Night® Pittsburgh Parade sponsor First Niagara. The new First Night Friend program offers donors at the $100 level or above special attendee benefits, including reserved parking, special access to vouchered First Night events and a VIP Lounge.

Dollar Bank signs on as the first-ever Presenting Sponsor for Three Rivers Arts Festival. The Trust salutes Dollar Bank for its enthusiastic support of the Festival. Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater & Festival

Giant Eagle became the firstever Presenting Sponsor of The Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival, and the Festival received a special endowment gift from the Hilda M. Willis Foundation.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS Individual giving among the Trust’s Board of Trustees reached 100% participation once again. The Trust thanks Sunil Wadhwani for leading this effort in 2010. Individual support increased 16% compared with 2009 giving levels. The Trust thanks Board chairs Susan McLaughlin, Kelly Price, Jill Brodbeck and Chip Babst for their enthusiastic cultivation efforts.

Since its inception in 2005, the Trust’s Corporate Circles Board has helped to increase overall corporate giving by 44%. The Trust thanks Frank Reed and Laurie Vota for their leadership, commitment and vision as Corporate Circles Board co-chairs. Key members of the foundation community continued to support Trust patron services’ initiatives, including the revamped CulturalDistrict.org, electronic ticket scanners and improved patron information management systems.
