WELCOME

2 P I T T S B U R G H C U LT U R A L T R U S T

Thank you for making 2012 a dynamic year in the Cultural District, where we welcomed more than 2,000,000 visitors attending an estimated 3,000 performances, exhibits and events. The collective support of thousands of people, businesses and foundations furthered the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s work in transforming downtown Pittsburgh through the arts. The Cultural District’s success is something in which we can all take tremendous pride. This year, we celebrated the 25th birthday of the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts, one of the nation’s most utilized venues and the Cultural Trust’s inaugural project. In the early 1980s, H.J. “Jack” Heinz II and his cadre of urban visionaries, including founding Cultural Trust The collective support of thousands of people, President Carol Brown, set a goal to create businesses and foundations furthered the a world-class destination for arts and Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s work in transforming entertainment. This bold vision began downtown Pittsburgh through the arts. The with the $43 million restoration of the Cultural District’s success is something in which dilapidated Stanley Theater. we can all take tremendous pride.

Our efforts to create a vibrant downtown neighborhood and cultivate the Cultural District’s infrastructure, programming and engagement have continued ever since, and 2012 was no exception.

The Distinctively Dutch Festival brought to Pittsburgh diverse, thoughtprovoking contemporary art forms from the Netherlands. With support from the Benter Foundation and Richard E. Rauh, we launched the Trust Cabaret Series to celebrate the great American songbook with performances by Broadway’s best singers. JERSEY BOYS and WAR HORSE were PNC Broadway Across America-Pittsburgh audience hits. Pittsburgh Dance Council presented Akram Khan Company’s acclaimed full-length work, Vertical Road. SPACE kicked off the national tour of Out of Rubble, a powerful and timely exhibit exploring war’s causes and consequences. As a leader in Pittsburgh’s accessibility movement, the Cultural Trust leveraged generous support from FISA Foundation to implement enhancements that improve the Cultural District experience for all visitors. In addition, our website, TrustArts.org, and the Cultural District’s collaborative website, CulturalDistrict.org, went mobile in 2012, allowing patrons to purchase tickets and access information

through smartphones and tablets. By year’s end, visits and sales from mobile devices had doubled. One of the best measures of our success in 2012 was the growing number of new businesses, institutions and residential properties established in the Cultural District, and the Cultural Trust expanded its footprint with the purchase of 811 Liberty Avenue for future development. We also expanded our volunteer base, adding 110 people to a corps of more than 950 individuals who give their valuable time to work at our theaters and special events. Volunteers save the Cultural Trust about $350,000 annually, and we are grateful for their time and enthusiasm for the arts. Every dollar invested in the Cultural Trust is guided by judicious fiscal management practices. Since the Cultural Trust was established in 1984 and embraced the Stanley Theater as its first project, we have conducted our multi-faceted work in the Cultural District without incurring a deficit, even in the most turbulent of economic conditions. Our dear friend Paul Jenkins, whom sadly we lost in 2012, was one of the Cultural Trust’s first trustees. As President of the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, Paul championed the Stanley Theater’s transformation into the majestic Benedum Center, setting the standard for excellence in the Cultural District. Paul’s legacy lives on thanks to a generous $120,000+ endowment fund established in Paul’s memory by the Benedum Foundation and more than 60 of Paul’s friends. I personally wish to thank our Board of Trustees’ Interim Co-Chairs Carolyn D. Duronio and Charles J. Queenan, Jr. for their leadership, counsel and friendship. And we give our thanks to Kenneth “Kenny” Brannigan, Jr. who retired after more than 28 years of dedicated service as the Benedum Center’s Technician and Head Carpenter. As you read about the Cultural Trust’s many accomplishments in this report, please know that it is your support that makes the Cultural District’s continuous improvement and vitality possible. Thank you,

J. Kevin McMahon President and CEO, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust 2012 Report to the Community

The Century Building and TREK Development received the Urban Land Institute’s Workforce Housing Model Award. Shared Services

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust-led consortium of seven Cultural District resident companies (Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, August Wilson Center, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Public Theater and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra)

has realized cumulative savings and cost avoidance of more than $10 million in the 12 years since its inception in 2000. These significant cost savings allow more capital to be directed towards respective artistic endeavors in the Cultural District. Marketing

The Cultural District resident companies collectively promoted new functionality of CulturalDistrict.org, as well as improved online navigation paths for each resident company’s respective website. The Golden Seat, an integrated marketing campaign designed to raise awareness of CulturalDistrict.org, touted a $5,000 Cultural District gift certificate sweepstakes. Campaign tactics included a row of refurbished theater seats, a mobile box office and a Cultural District promotional tent all strategically placed during heavy foot traffic events in the Cultural

District. The campaign resulted in record web visits and online ticket sales, as well as positive feedback from ticket buyers, subscribers, donors and group sales representatives about vastly-improved web experiences. ParkPGH, the Cultural Trust’s real-time garage parking availability platform, expanded from monitoring 5,600 Cultural District parking spaces, to more than 13,000 spaces located downtown and on the North Shore. The Cultural Trust established a fellowship program with Coro, which fosters young civic leaders nationwide, to cultivate audience engagement strategies.

HAPPY 25TH BIRTHDAY BENEDUM CENTER FOR THE

PERFORMING ARTS 1987–2012

When the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was established in 1984, its inaugural project was to realize the late H.J. “Jack” Heinz II’s vision for the historic restoration of the 2,800-seat Stanley Theater, and to make it look as it did on opening night in 1928. The restoration, led by founding Cultural Trust President and CEO Carol Brown, would take three years, $43 million and countless hours of hard work. In 1987, the Stanley Theater was renamed the Benedum Center after a generous gift from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. As the gem of the Cultural District, the Benedum Center is home to Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Opera, and sets the stage for a diverse multitude of visiting performing artists.

BENEDUM CENTER FACTS Since it opened in 1987, the Benedum Center has staged more than

The signature, original main chandelier weighs 4,700 pounds, holds 50,000 pieces of cut glass and stands 20 feet high by 12 feet wide. The 90 crystal chandeliers, torchieres and sconces are original.

The Benedum’s stage, which is one of the largest theater stages in the U.S., is 150 feet wide, 80 feet deep and nine stories high. At the landing on each staircase in the grand lobby are 18-foot-high original mirrors, resembling the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles.

R E CE NT I M PROVEMENTS The Benedum Center’s 17-year-old analog-based sound system was replaced with a Studer Vista 5 digital audio mixing console. The new digital sound system dramatically improves the theater’s ability to tailor sound engineering for a wider range of theatrical productions and live music performances.

All

of the Benedum Center’s seats were reupholstered.

The Cultural Trust installed an in-house boiler system for heating the Benedum Center and the Byham Theater. The new system increases the theaters’ energy efficiency, saving the Cultural Trust about

$66,000 annually on utility expenses.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust spends more than $3 million annually ($10,000 a day) to operate the Benedum Center. Your support of the Cultural Trust ensures that this world-class theater is well maintained for your enjoyment and for generations to come. Thank you!

Highlights

In 2012, the Cultural Trust’s combined fundraising efforts exceeded $9.7 million, including more than $2 million from individual donors. The Cultural Trust’s 10,000-Member Campaign surpassed 4,000 members, an 83% increase since the campaign launch in 2011. The Benedum Foundation and more than 60 individual supporters established a $120,000+ endowment fund in memory of longtime Trustee and Cultural District visionary, Paul Jenkins.

The Performing Arts Center Consortium ranked the Cultural Trust fourth in fundraising activity among North America’s 40 largest performance arts centers. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named the Cultural Trust Gala celebrating the Benedum Center’s 25th birthday the best party of 2012. Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh raised more than $50,000 and was attended by 650+ patrons.

The Cultural Trust was the beneficiary of the 2013 Cinderella Ball and partnered with 22 debutantes who volunteered more than 800 hours in the Cultural District. FISA Foundation generously funded a Cultural Districtwide accessibility initiative, led by the Cultural Trust, to collect and disseminate information about theater accessibility. This ongoing initiative supports the Cultural Trust’s leadership to make Cultural District theaters accessible for everyone.

The Cultural Trust thanks Colcom Foundation for funding environmental and sustainability efforts at Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, and helping to divert 80+ percent of festival waste from landfills. Colcom Foundation funded a green education tent, a free bike valet parking service and water stations with compostable cups to reduce the festival’s environmental impact.
