WELCOME The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is thrilled to report that 2013 was a HUGE year in the Cultural District and one of the most remarkable in our 29-year history. We thank you for your enthusiastic support. That support was overwhelmingly on display for Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s The Rubber Duck Project, commissioned by the Cultural Trust as part of our third Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts. Two million people flocked to Point State Park to see the free, 40-foot inflatable artwork, generating tens of millions of direct spending for the local Pittsburgh economy—and spreading immeasurable joy. There were many other successes in Cultural Trust programming. PNC Broadway Across America-Pittsburgh had its strongest year yet with subscriptions and attendance. The Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh Dance Council audiences enjoyed stunning U.S. premieres by Compagnie Marie Chouinard and Zimmermann & de Perrot. Subscriptions to our Children’s Theater series reached a six-year high. A record-breaking crowd welcomed summer at the opening night of our Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. Our third Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival had a marked increase in attendance. The growing downtown visual arts scene flourished under the Cultural Trust’s curatorial eye, including the Cultural Trust’s Wood Street Galleries’ presentation of Chang-Jin Lee’s piercing Comfort Women Wanted, which gained critical attention from The Huffington Post.

THE RUBBER DUCK PROJECT

PROGRAMMING

An estimated two million people flocked to Point State Park to see the U.S. debut of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman’s public artwork, The Rubber Duck Project, as part of the Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts.

A sensory-friendly performance of Disney’s THE LION KING tailored to individuals on the autism spectrum and their families was presented. Subsidized by the Cultural Trust and supported by numerous foundations, the performance was attended by more than 2,400 people and represented one of the Cultural Trust’s most meaningful accomplishments.

Free and open to the public, The Rubber Duck Project generated tens of millions of dollars of direct spending for the local Pittsburgh economy and received national coverage on ABC’s Good Morning America, CNN and NBC Nightly News. An estimated 100,000+ onlookers witnessed the arrival of The Rubber Duck Project, making it the highest-attended event in Cultural Trust history. The City of Pittsburgh proclaimed October 29 as “Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Day” in honor and recognition of bringing The Rubber Duck Project to the city, for its work in developing and promoting Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, and thereby making Pittsburgh a better place to live, work and play.

FedEx® Ground joined Highmark First Night® Pittsburgh as parade sponsor.

BNY Mellon Jazz presents JazzLive, the Cultural Trust’s free weekly music series in the Cultural District, celebrated its 10th anniversary. In its third year, Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival’s audience doubled, of which 18 percent attended from out of town to enjoy a full line-up of jazz artists from around the county. REAL ESTATE During 2013, close to 400 residential units were under construction in the Cultural District. An estimated 100 new residential units were added in the Cultural District, contributing to more than 4,400 residential units in downtown Pittsburgh and representing a 73 percent increase of available downtown housing over the past 10 years. Renovations began on the upper floors of the landmark Clark Building to make way for 244 new residential units scheduled to open in 2014. New restaurants in the Cultural District: Butcher and the Rye 212 Sixth Street Redbeards on Sixth 144 Sixth Street Alihan’s Mediterranean Cuisine 124 Sixth Street Proper Brick Oven & Tap Room 139 Seventh Street Enigma 130 Seventh Street TenPenny Tenth Street and Penn Avenue Grit & Grace 535 Liberty Avenue Arcade Comedy Theater, the newest destination for all things comedy in the Cultural District, launched its performance space in the Cultural Trust’s 811 Liberty Avenue property.

The Western PA Conservancy’s Fallingwater Museum Store utilized the Cultural Trust’s 807 Liberty Avenue storefront space during the winter holiday season.

FACILITIES The Cultural Trust upgraded the Byham Theater’s 20-year-old marquee messaging center panels with an environmentally responsible LED technology system designed to reduce electricity usage up to 70 percent. In efforts to replicate the historic look of the marquee’s original incandescent lamps and to ensure ease of maintenance, the new system features an advanced, full-color, removal pixel design. The mural on the exterior of the Byham Theater’s artist entrance doors (part of the Richard Haas mural commissioned by the Cultural Trust) was restored by Allen Welkis of Evergreene Architectural Arts, Inc. after the doors were replaced. Evergreene painted the original mural in 1994. The Cultural Trust opened a fully functional Guest Services Center in the Benedum Center equipped with an accessible street entrance, assistive listening devices used for sound amplification or audio descriptions, and real-time I-Caption screens. A satellite Guest Services desk was subsequently established at the Byham Theater.

BroadwayWorld.com, the largest online resource for theater, introduced a spotlight on outstanding regional theaters; the Cultural Trust’s Benedum Center was chosen to be its first featured theater. As a property partner of the Pittsburgh 2030 District environmental initiative, the Cultural Trust is reducing energy, water consumption, emissions and waste and is improving indoor air quality in our theaters and administrative offices. In 2013, we partnered with Sequoia Waste Solutions to maximize recycling and trash management efforts. The Cultural Trust’s Harris Theater welcomed more than 18,000 people attending close to 500 screenings programmed by Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The Cultural Trust hosted the sold-out Camp Broadway EXP, a one-day program that offers theater-loving kids, ages 10 to 17, a unique opportunity to boost confidence, inspire creativity and develop presentation skills through the art of ensemble performance. The PNC Foundation extended its support of the Cultural Trust to facilitate PNC Grow Up Great arts education activities for downtown Pittsburgh daycare centers. The Cultural Trust expanded its Grow Up Great

offerings to include visual arts activities and summer story time sessions. The Cultural Trust increased its participation with Pittsburgh Public School’s All-City Art Showcase, providing exhibit space, logistical support and marketing through the Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District. The Cultural Trust saw a 20 percent increase in both the attendance and geographic footprint of its theater and dance master classes with visiting professional artists.

MARKETING The Rubber Duck Project, which launched the Cultural Trust’s Pittsburgh International Festival of Firsts, received regional, national, and international attention for Pittsburgh and the Cultural Trust. Overall media impressions, along with its viral online exposure, exceeded 330 million impressions for our 40foot tall by 30-foot wide friend. Even more patrons transacted with the Cultural Trust online in 2013. More than 50 percent of all Cultural District ticket purchases were made online, and ticket purchases on mobile devices doubled. Patrons are now four times more likely to donate online to the Cultural Trust. The added print-at-home feature resulted in more than 100,000 Cultural District tickets printed on home printers, which represents an 11 percent increase.

A new feature was introduced to allow ticket buyers to share their seat locations with friends on Facebook after purchasing their tickets. ParkPGH, the Cultural Trust’s real-time parking platform, doubled its garage coverage to 21,000 parking garage spaces located in and around downtown Pittsburgh.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS The Cultural Trust was a host for the Americans for the Arts 2013 Annual Convention held in Pittsburgh. The convention represented a highly visible platform from which the Cultural Trust shared its successes with 1,200+ arts and community leaders (many of whom had never visited Pittsburgh). The Cultural Trust joined Riverlife, the PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development to celebrate the reopening of Point State Park with Riverlights at The Point on opening day of the 2013 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival. The Cultural Trust was a Community Partner for Knit the Bridge, a grassroots fiber arts installation spanning the Andy Warhol / Seventh Street Bridge. Autism Connection of PA named the Cultural Trust its 2013 Organizational Honoree.
