CULTURAL

TRUST

OUR VISION The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust (Cultural Trust) is the driving force behind a thriving Cultural District that enriches the region’s vibrancy and prosperity and contributes to Pittsburgh’s success and international reputation as a role model for economic and quality-of-life transformation.

OUR MISSION For 30 years since its founding in 1984, the Cultural Trust has led the way in uniting public and private interests in pursuit of mutually supportive cultural and economic development objectives, with emphasis on the creation and fostering of a downtown Cultural District serving the Pittsburgh region, and on providing a home for a broad range of regional performance groups as well as its resident companies.

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s work in the Cultural District is made possible because of your support and patronage — thank you!

“Looking at Pittsburgh’s impressive revival, it’s important to take note of the key role played over the last 30 years by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, an organization that has managed one of the city’s most vivid transformations, turning a large part of downtown that had been overtaken by porn shops, strip joints, massage parlors, and sleazy bars into a lively, safe, and attractive district for cultural arts and entertainment.” —The Atlantic December 2014

WELCOME

Thank you for helping the Cultural Trust

Thanks to your generous support and patronage, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust marked its 30th year

reach its 30th year and for sustaining a worldclass arts and entertainment destination. Working together, we’re putting Pittsburgh on the map as one of the world’s great tourist attractions —today and for

of dedicated service in the downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. Look around and you will see our work at every turn —theaters and visual arts galleries, a diverse array of performing and visual arts offerings, an increasing number of downtown residential properties, comprehensive streetscape improvements, public art and plazas, a centralized

box office and a hub for arts education activities. Our efforts feed an increasingly robust offering of downtown hotels, fine restaurants and cafes, and nightclubs, attracting more people downtown than ever before and positioning Pittsburgh at the top of many best-places-to-visit lists. You may recall the downtown Pittsburgh of the 1980s differently. Commuters fled when the work day ended. Downtown became a ghost town on weeknights and weekends. The Penn-Liberty stretch, where the Cultural District now stands, was littered with pornographic enterprises and criminal activity. It was in this red light district that H.J. “Jack” Heinz II envisioned a Cultural District. Jack Heinz and his family embraced the drawing power of the arts as a way to transform the blighted Penn-Liberty area and contribute to the city’s long-term economic growth. To that effect, Heinz established the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

in 1984 under founding President and CEO Carol Brown’s curatorial eye. We extend our gratitude to Carol for her commitment and thoughtful leadership, and to all of the Cultural Trust’s volunteer chairs and trustees, past and present, for their collective, extraordinary service.
