A Brothers’s

Insight

We had the chance to sit down with Dr. Joe-Joe McManus, who has spent over 30 years helping schools, organizations, and leaders become more inclusive and committed to antiracism. Growing up in a diverse, multicultural family, he experienced first hand the impact of racism and inequality, inspiring his lifelong focus on social justice. Dr. McManus has worked at all types of schools, from HBCUs to Ivy League universities, driving meaningful change. As the author of A Brother’s Insight, he shares practical advice for living an antiracist life and continues to consult, speak, and write about building more equitable communities.

What motivated you to write A Brother’s Insight?

Folks have been encouraging me to write a book for as long as I can remember. I’ve always had a reason for not writing. I didn’t think my experience was interesting enough. I hadn’t learned enough yet. And, when it came to racial justice, even though it has been my life’s work, I always felt like my place was behind the scenes.

What ultimately motivated me to overcome what had become excuses was a challenge from my daughter, Makaila. She was ten years old when she asked about what happened to George Floyd. She had been hearing rumors. I made the decision to show her the video of a police officer murdering Mr. Floyd. After watching the video, we talked and she challenged me to do more. She understood that my work was focused on fighting against racism and that racism fueled what she saw in that video. She told me that I needed to work harder. A Brother’s Insight is part of my response to her challenge.

In the book, you share personal stories. How do these experiences connect to the broader themes of racism and equity in society?

It was important for me to share part of my personal experience in order to demonstrate how I came to focus on racial and social justice. In many ways my life is no different than most, but because of some early experiences and being raised in an actively antiracist home, I developed a different lens. This, in no

small part, was also due to my experience as Kacey’s brother.

Kacey was adopted as a baby when I was only a year old. He was a Black child being adopted into a white family. Our experience growing up together was somewhat unique because of the racist realities in our small white-flight town. Our experiences and how we were raised taught me that I needed to be part of the solution to racism and other forms of bigotry and oppression. Whether it was at home helping out in our parents’ mom-andpop shop, in the community, or at school, racism was evident everywhere.

While we have made progress in some ways, systemic racism and injustice continue to plague us today. In fact, we are currently experiencing a resurgence of racial bigotry and a powerful resistance to equity and inclusion at the highest levels of our political, corporate, healthcare, education, and other systems.

You mention that the book offers actionable strategies for dismantling racism. Can you give us an example of one of the strategies that readers can implement immediately in their daily lives?

From my perspective, committing to racial justice as a core value is the most powerful

action an individual can take. When we value racial justice, it is always a factor in our decision making, not unlike a commitment to the environment or even a religious faith. Once you have made such a commitment to yourself, you don’t need a list of action items, and you won’t need to be reminded to consider the impact of your action or inaction. It will simply become natural to take racial equity and justice into consideration when making decisions – whether in our personal, professional, or social lives.

How does A Brother’s Insight differ from other books on racism and social justice that are available today?

It is important, in order to reach as many people as possible, that many different voices promote racial equity and justice. For those readers who resonate with my perspective, I hope that I am able to help them to recognize the importance of doing their part. In some ways, my book is not different. It is just a different voice, hoping to expand the reach of the common goals of racial and social justice expressed by others. What is different is my personal story, my professional experience, and my particular take on how we can each make a meaningful difference both individually and in solidarity with one another.

What challenges did you face while writing this book, and how did your personal experiences help you overcome them? There were many challenges to writing this book, and even more in getting it published. The biggest challenge in the writing was making the commitment to share some very difficult parts of my personal story. The professional insights and any wisdom that I have gathered over the years were not any more difficult than what I do in my daily work as an advisor. It was the deeply personal experiences, especially those that carry a great deal of pain and judgment – from myself and others - that were difficult to write.

What helped the most was the encouragement and support from friends and colleagues. One in particular, Dr. Rheeda Walker, encouraged me from the beginning, sharing what she had learned writ-

ing her first book, a true must read for anyone who cares about racial justice by the way, The Unapologetic Guide to Black Mental Health. She also generously took the time to write the Foreword for A Brother’s Insight. As challenging as the process has been, the support I have received has not only been rejuvenating when I needed it but it has also underscored the importance of each of us making our own unique contributions toward progress.

What do you hope will be the long-term impact of A Brother’s Insight on its readers?

I hope to inspire bystanders to action; encourage and validate those who are already actively antiracist; and contribute to the promotion of solidarity in the global movement for racial and social justice.

Eating Right on the Road:

How to Balance Nutrition While Traveling

Maintaining a healthy diet can be challenging, especially when you’re on the go. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, it’s important to prioritize your health and wellness by making smart food choices. Let’s explore some tips and tricks for eating right while on the road, so you can stay energized and nourished during your travels. From meal prepping to choosing healthier options at rest stops, we’ll cover everything you need to know about healthy eating on the go!

Pre-Trip Meal Prep for Healthy Eating Success

Embarking on your journey with a plan for your meals is a cornerstone of maintaining health while away from home. Meal prepping doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Start with simple, yet wholesome, recipes that are easy to assemble and can last well during travel. Whip up a batch of quinoa salad loaded with your favorite veggies, beans for protein, and a drizzle of olive oil and lemon for dressing. Or, prepare whole-wheat wraps filled with grilled chicken, mixed greens, and avocado. Packing these homemade meals not only saves you from the pitfalls of airport and roadside dining but also gives you control over your nutritional intake, keeping you fueled and focused on the adventures ahead.

Navigating Nutrition at Rest Stops and Airports

Facing the maze of convenience foods at rest stops and airports can seem daunting, but it’s entirely possible to stay on your healthy eating track with a bit of foresight. Opt for fresh and whole food options wherever available. Fresh fruits, yogurts, nuts, and salads are often accessible and make for nutritious choices that can help you avoid the temptation

of less healthy fare. When at airport eateries, prioritize dishes that feature grilled proteins, vegetables, and whole grains. These selections will help maintain your energy levels and avoid the sluggishness often induced by fried or heavily processed foods. Staying mindful of your choices in these environments allows you to continue nourishing your body well, even while navigating the challenges of travel dining.

Overcoming Jet Lag with Smart Nutritional Choices

Jet lag can significantly disrupt your travel experience by affecting your sleep patterns and energy levels. To mitigate these effects, focus on foods that promote a smoother transition across time zones. Start by staying well-hydrated before, during, and after your flight; water is crucial in helping your body adjust. Incorporate meals rich in lean proteins and complex carbohydrates, such as chicken with brown rice or a salmon salad, to maintain steady energy. Foods high in magnesium, like spinach and almonds, can also promote better sleep. Limit intake of caffeine and alcohol, as these can further disturb your sleep cycle and dehydration levels. Choosing meals and snacks wisely can be a powerful

tool in aligning your body’s clock to your new environment, easing the transition and helping you enjoy your travels from the moment you arrive.

Staying Active: Exercises and Stretches for Travelers

Travel often means prolonged periods of sitting, which can take a toll on your circulation and muscle health. To keep the blood flowing and your body flexible, engage in light, easily doable exercises and stretches, even in confined spaces. For instance, ankle circles and neck rolls can alleviate tension and improve blood flow without needing extra room. Try seated stretches, like extending your legs out and flexing your feet or pulling one knee at a time towards your chest. These movements can significantly reduce the risk of stiffness and discomfort. Additionally, make a point to stand up and walk down the aisles every hour or so during flights when it’s safe to do so. Utilizing small breaks during road trips to get out and stretch your legs can also be beneficial. These simple, yet effective, strategies will help keep your body in better shape throughout your travels, making your journey more comfortable and enjoyable.

Recipes for Every Traveler

Creating a versatile and nutritious snack tray for your travel adventures doesn’t have to be complicated. Aim for a balance of proteins, healthy fats, and carbohydrates to keep your energy levels steady. Start with sliced veg-

etables like carrots, bell peppers, and cucumbers paired with a small container of hummus or guacamole for dipping. These provide a crunchy and satisfying snack with the added benefit of fiber and essential nutrients. For a protein boost, include a mix of nuts and seeds, or pack some string cheese or a small bag of edamame. Fruits such as apples, grapes, or berries are excellent for a sweet craving and offer quick energy. Whole grain crackers or rice cakes can serve as a good base for almond butter or a slice of turkey breast. Remember, the key is variety and balance to cater to different hunger cues without resorting to processed food options. Preparing these items in advance ensures you have healthy snacks readily available, making it easier to nourish your body and stay energized throughout your travels.

The journey to sustain a nutritious diet while exploring new destinations is not only feasible but also enriching. Emphasizing the preparation of meals before departure, making wise food selections during stops, utilizing dietary strategies to ease jet lag, engaging in simple exercises for better circulation, and preparing a diverse snack tray can profoundly influence your travel experience. These steps are foundational in keeping your dietary habits aligned with your wellness goals, even when away from the comfort of your home. By integrating these practices into your travel planning, you embrace the opportunity to nourish your body, ensuring a trip filled with vitality and enjoyment. Let these guidelines inspire you to prioritize your health on your next adventure, proving that staying true to your nutritional needs and enjoying the thrills of travel can go hand in hand.

A Conversation with Sidney Nicole Rogers

We had the pleasure of sitting down with Sidney Nicole Rogers, the founder of the lifestyle brand SNR, to discuss her brand, which is built on the pillars of Healing, Heart, and Home. Drawing from her personal journey, including her successful acting career and love for homemaking, Sidney reveals how these elements come together to form a platform focused on healing, creativity, and empowerment. Through meaningful conversations, nurturing spaces, and spiritual grounding, we dive into the essence of her brand and the profound impact it has on her audience. Learn how embracing heart-centered living can foster deeper connections and inspire transformative change in your life.

YInterview & Photography by

our lifestyle platform blends cooking, homemaking, and spirituality. How do these elements come together to reflect your personal journey, and what inspired you to focus on these areas?

My company and brand, SNR, has three pillars: Healing, Heart, and Home. My goal is for my audience and I to heal our hearts in order for us to build our homes. And what better way for me to demonstrate that than for me to tap into my passions; meaningful conversations and home making.

I’ve always been one to dive into the heart of a conversation and through accountability, vulnerability, and confrontation, healing often results. As for the home making element, I’ve been the cook of my household since I was a child. I’d spend hours upon hours watching Food Network, excited to recreate the meals. Heck, I asked for pots, pans, and cutting boards for Christmas! That same enthusiasm was also evident in my adoration for interior design and do it yourself (DIY) projects. I’d beg my mom to take me to Michael’s craft store and to Pier 1 Imports; for me, the creative possibilities were endless.

That said, when developing my YouTube channel and SNR brand, I wondered what I would showcase. I almost leaned into what others might expect from me (acting, haircare, and beauty), but it was actually my wonderful and intuitive husband who said “Just be YOU. SNR is named after you anyways, so show up as you.” and for that, I am forever grateful.

You have a successful acting career, including your role in this year’s movie, Lumina. How has your work in entertainment influenced your approach to creating content for your lifestyle brand? Yes - thank you. I’m very thankful for the opportunities my career has led me to experience.

Actually, I got my start in content creating due to the entertainment industry shutting down in 2020. During that uncertain time, I turned to content creation to generate income and to explore my creativity. I viewed content creation as a way for me to not only be the actor, but be the director, DP, set designer, props, and producer as well; a one woman show! It was also during that time that the idea of starting a YouTube channel kept knocking at my door, but I was unfortunately too chicken to say “yes” to the call. Now that I’m finally pursuing my YouTube career and building a company, I have taken a few elements of the entertainment industry with me such as my production value, the way I structure my content, and my comfort with on camera vulnerability. Homemaking can be deeply personal, and it’s evolving.

“ I am exposing my healing process in the hopes that my healing will spark healing in my audience.”

How do you define modern homemaking, and what values or rituals do you incorporate into your own home life? That’s a very good question. To me, home making is simply that - making home. No matter the specs of your home: whether it’s big, small, an apartment, or a house, I view homemaking as crafting a comfortable space that exudes your unique personality, style, and life experiences. With that in mind, within my own home, it is my daily desire to curate a place of peace, love, coziness, and joy. I achieve that in many ways, including cooking comfort meals, designing and redesigning the rooms, floral arranging, playing jazz music, discovering my home’s signature scent, not forcing creativity, having my own “turn down service,” and decorating with items that evoke positive, happy memories.

Heart and healing are key to your brand. How do you balance promoting self-care products while emphasizing the importance of inner healing, self-acceptance, and nurturing the heart?

Heart is the core of my channel and brand. Just like within the body, without heart, there’s nothing. As I touched on earlier, heartfelt, meaningful conversations often lead to healing. And that is the goal; I am exposing my healing process in the hopes that my healing will spark healing in my audience. I shied away from that vulnerability until I knew I couldn’t anymore. It definitely is scary, letting people inside your intimate world, but I know my purpose is outside of myself so I’m okay with it.

What role does spirituality play in your daily life?

I love God. God is so tightly woven into my day to day life that it’s not a thought to pray, praise, and read my Bible daily. I wouldn’t even call it a routine or “spiritual practice,” my connection with my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ is a relationship that I’ve had for as long as I can remember.

How do you hope to engage and empower your followers as they incorporate your tips and insights into their own lives?

I hope to engage with my audience by creating meaningful dialogue through videos and, eventually, physical products that will continue to aid them on their healing journey. As for empowering, it’s my aspiration that as I continue to openly share my road to healing, my audience will share and heal as well. I know I don’t have to heal alone and it is my hope that anyone who follows me knows that they don’t have to heal alone either - I’m there for them.

As you transition from acting to building a lifestyle brand, how do you handle the challenges of being seen in a new light by your audience? What has the response been like so far?

Great question! The transition is simply something I must reinforce in order to effectively communicate what my brand is and what my audience is to expect. So far, everyone I’ve spoken to has been 1000% on board and are excited to see what is to come.

What do you envision for 2025?

Whewww!! That question is loaded because my faith is so extremely explosive that I truly believe I can accomplish everything that’s in my mind - and trust me, that’s A LOT! I envision an enlargement of my platforms, producing physical products from SNR, and bringing healing, heart, and home to many households.

Thank you so much for having me!

Yellostone A Journey Into Nature’s Heart

In the golden embrace of July, Yellowstone National Park becomes a living, breathing masterpiece. Its landscapes whisper timeless stories, and its wildlife weaves a tapestry of life that feels both ancient and immediate. During my visit, I found myself not merely a spectator but a participant in the park’s grand symphony—a harmony that stirs the soul and quiets the mind.

YYellowstone had been on my bucket list for years, especially to witness the Grand Prismatic Spring. Its radiant blues and fiery oranges felt like a living painting, a wonder that left me awestruck. To get the best view, I embarked on a morning hike to an overlook spot. As I climbed, the silence was broken only by birdsong and the occasional rustle of leaves—until I encountered two massive bison, only 8–10 feet away.

One grazed peacefully in the field, while the other scratched its neck against a tree. It was both beautiful and humbling to stand so close to nature’s power. I froze as the scratching bison turned and began walking toward me. My heart raced, but something told me to stay calm. And I was right. The bison eventually turned and wandered back into the field. The encounter reminded me of the delicate dance between humanity and the wild—a dance that demands respect and patience.

Yellowstone is more than a destination”

Old Faithful offered a different kind of wonder. Waiting among a crowd, I watched the geyser’s sudden eruption, a plume of water and steam rocketing skyward. It was like witnessing Earth itself breathe, a moment of awe shared with strangers who felt like kindred spirits. Driving through the park from our base in Montana, every turn revealed more wildlife. Bison, elk, and even a fox graced our journey. Whenever an animal appeared, cars stopped, and people gazed in wonder. It struck me how deeply we crave these moments of connection with the natural world—a hunger that Yellowstone satisfies in abundance.

If you go, here are three must-dos: Hike to the Grand Prismatic Spring overlook, but be prepared to respect and yield to wildlife.

Witness Old Faithful’s eruption, a timeless reminder of nature’s rhythm.

Admire wildlife from a safe distance—use binoculars to observe without interfering. Yellowstone is more than a destination; it is a testament to the harmony of Earth’s forces. As I left, the memory of its wild beauty stayed with me, a quiet melody I’ll carry forever.
