pantomime

One of the best loved fairy tales of all time is given the Theatre Royal pantomime treatment to create a show that’s full of magic. Snow White escapes the clutches of her evil Stepmother and meets up with seven crazy dwarfs, who live in a cottage deep in the woods. But when the Wicked Queen uses her magic mirror to discover Snow White’s whereabouts, our heroine is once again in grave danger. Music, jokes and loads of audience participation make Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs a Christmas treat for all the family. Don’t miss this ‘short’ tale that’s BIG on adventure.

Can the Seven Dwarfs help Snow White or will they come up short? Will the Wicked Queen prove to be rotten to the core when it comes to the crunch? And will the castle cook, Dame Dolly Dollop, and her silly son Muddles have the recipe for success or are they just cooking up trouble?

Puccini’s tautest drama is given a radical yet affectionate re-working, set in the dying days of the East German regime and stripping the story to its most essential elements. A cast of just five singers and a trio of piano, clarinet and cello bring OperaUpClose’s trademark intimacy and immediacy to this tale of love, lust and the corrupting influence of power while retaining all of the emotional impact of the original. By Deborah McAndrew Freely adapted from The Suicide by Nikolai Erdman Directed by Conrad Nelson

Simeon Duff is working class, unemployed and desperate. His wife works. He’s lost all self esteem. He’s on the scrap heap and wants to end it all… ...and so begins this brilliantly insane comedy about a man on the edge. When word gets out that Duff is going to top himself, a host of ne’er-do-wells crawl out of the woodwork, each wanting to claim his grand gesture for their ‘noble cause’. Let’s face it, why waste a death? But which cause shall it be … love, politics, religion, or the rising price of fish? Will the disillusioned Duff go through with it? Will he really top himself for a dubious cause? Is he worth it? Watch and see … the suspense will kill you, if you don’t die laughing first.

Step into an upside-down world where familiar things are made strange, with enchanting and horrifying results. Alice in Wonderland is about crossing the threshold between childhood and adulthood, and about the behaviour of one generation seen through the eyes of another. It is about things not being as they should be.

BEATS tells the story of Johnno McCreadie, a teenager living in a small suburban Scottish town at the time of the 1994 Criminal Justice Act – a new piece of legislation which effectively outlawed raves, or “public gatherings around amplified music characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats”. BEATS is a coming-of-age story exploring rebellion, apathy and the irresistible power of gathered youth. With techno. Lots of techno.

‘One of the most captivating shows in Edinburgh.... an extraordinarily inventive dance theatre show’ The Guardian

created and performed by Wolfgang Hoffmann and Sven Till directed by Andrew Dawson Pandora 88 is extraordinary movement theatre that oscillates between dreamlike tranquillity and explosive physicality somewhere at the intersection of dance and theatre. Employing strong emotions, intense images and serious playfulness the piece moves from comedy to tragedy and back, finding, almost by accident, a little detour through outer space. The stage is a box of 1.5 square metres. This is the playground / the home / the prison / the shelter for the two protagonists. In this space the lives of the actors seem to both begin and end. It is a space to which they are attached for good or for bad.

www.theatreroyalwinchester.co.uk

The creation of Pandora 88 is based on radical constraint as well as on the common life story and the long lasting friendship of the two dancers. Near Gone

Presented by Two Destination Language

Near Gone is a heartfelt story about survival Performed at Winchester Discovery Centre

The Blues Band Featuring; Paul Jones, Dave Kelly, Rob Townsend, Gary Fletcher, Tom McGuinness

In the past 35 years the band have played all around the world in venues ranging from intimate clubs through to civic halls and theatres, and have wowed festival audiences in many countries - including headline appearances at Glastonbury. The band’s passion and reverence for the music, their presentation and showmanship all combine to deliver the definitive good night out. www.gtamusic.co.uk Tickets £20.00 Concessions £18.00

Two performers have a difficult story to tell. They come on stage and launch themselves into an hour long attempt to put into words the utterly unspeakable. Delivered in English and Bulgarian, with fantastic gypsy-inspired music, this performance fills an empty space with two performers and 400 fresh flowers. It transforms you too. Your sense of what it is to be a mother, a father, a child. And you’ll leave more fully alive than ever.

Paintings by Mike Weller

www.zerotwelveartists.wordpress.com

Mike Weller draws and paints in a traditional style, from life, never from photographs. His oil paintings of fruit are done in daylight in the studio. He paints landscapes in oil outside in the open air. He scrapes off the paint and starts again.

Tuesday 5 November - Friday 22 November

Monday 23 September – Friday 1 November Mike was born in 1965 and grew up in Winchester. He studied librarianship and realised early on he didn’t want to be a librarian. Going to life-drawing classes cheered him up. He became a features subtitler for the deaf and hard-of-hearing - a lucky escape. Mike achieved a first-class honours degree in Fine Art printmaking at London Metropolitan University. In the final year he was awarded a bursary for the Pont-Aven School of Contemporary Art summer

programme. He attended Lavender Hill Studios – a small atelier-style painting school. He came back to Winchester and helped establish and run The Yard Artists Studios before he moved to Brassey Road Studio. Last Christmas, Mike had two pictures selected for exhibition by the New English Art Club and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters at the Mall Galleries near Trafalgar Square. He is currently exhibiting his landscapes at the Minster Gallery in Winchester.
