DRIFTERS A work in progress by Strange Arrangements This is a free event and all are welcome but please reserve a ticket in advance For its first UK show, Strange Arrangements presents a dancepuppetry work currently in development and due to premiere in 2013. Formerly practising in Australia and now permanently located in Hampshire, the company aims to present poetical works that allow an audience to go on a journey and follow a trail of curiosity. Three characters are thrust together by their journey into uncharted, extraordinary territory. Drifters is a poetic encounter, inspired by epic journeys of discovery, using dance, puppets and animation, where objects transform in most unusual ways. HARRY HILL – EXPERIMENTS IN ENTERTAINMENT Harry tries out new material for a live show that promises incontrovertible proof that God exists. Joined by showband ‘The Harry’s’, there is a section exclusively for Tongans, a chance to catch up on Harry’s Nan’s latest ailments, the legendary Stouffer the Cat and a debut solo stand-up spot by Gary, Harry’s son from his first marriage and recognisable for his role as Alan Sugar in Harry Hill’s TV Burp. Probably the best-known soul guitarist in the world, Steve Cropper came to prominence in the early ’60s and was a major figure in the Southern Soul movement. Cropper made his mark not only as a player and arranger, but also as a songwriter. As co-writer of classics such as In the Midnight Hour, On the Dock of the Bay and Knock on Wood he has earned an honoured place in the soul music hall of fame.

Blind Summit Theatre are theatrical innovators who created the puppetry in Anthony Minghella’s celebrated Madam Butterfly and Danny Boyle’s epic Olympic Opening Ceremony. In The Table they get back to their roots as the ‘front men of rock’n’roll puppetry’ (Time Out) with this award winning show inspired by Beckett, the Bible and Ikea and prove that ‘when you’re working in miniature you don't have to think small’ (The Guardian).
Space Panorama
Acclaimed director, choreographer and performer Andrew Dawson recreates a constantly entrancing documentary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing using only a black-draped table for a stage, and his hands. Accompanied by Shostakovich’s 10th symphony and a dramatic, lively narration, Dawson takes audiences from Houston to the moon and returns them safely to Earth, conveying the colossal distances and the risks involved simply through his skilled hand movements and wry facial expressions. Dawson has performed Space Panorama at the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing at the Kennedy Centre and an astronaut reunion dinner in Houston with Buzz Aldrin.

AN AUDIENCE WITH JONATHAN MILLER Sir Jonathan Miller is a man of many parts. Doctor, an expert in neuropsychology, a satirist, writer, sculptor and director of theatre, opera and film, he rose to fame in the early 1960s when, alongside Peter Cook, Dudley Moore and Alan Bennett, he cowrote and starred in the groundbreaking satirical stage revue Beyond The Fringe. Combining some of the best Oxbridge talents of the era, it first played the Edinburgh Fringe before transferring to the West End and then
Broadway, heralding a brave new era of satirical comedy. This unique one-man show finds Miller discussing his life and work beyond Beyond The Fringe. Jonathan Miller will also be directing Rutherford & Son by Northern Broadsides in summer 2013 (see p 20).

This enduring piece is as relevant today as it was when first produced many years ago. EVE DAWSON MA Chaos & Form This stunning exhibition by Eve Dawson showcases her bold expressionistic style and her particular sensibility to abstract forms and bright popping colour. Her spontaneous approach to mark-making creates dramatic splashes, vivid marks and abstract painterly forms provoking in each viewer a particular emotional response. Eve, a postgraduate of Winchester School of Art (Southampton University),
is an artist whose work is based on a preoccupation with time and being. Her work consists of a particular gesture that has been formulated, and a collection of actions or marks that have been let loose or held in place and captured in time. Making order out of chaos is an almost compulsive act. Each line embodies a reaction. A variety of media has been used including acrylic paints and inks on paper. evevdawson.com

Artist Lisa Earley’s otherworldly, ethereal artworks explore interpretations of well known narratives and current ecological stories. This beautiful exhibition includes an interpretation of Grimm’s fairy tale Hansel and Gretel with the imagery blurring the lines between reality and fantasy, tricking the eye into surreality. The multilayered images are worked in textiles using a combination of stitched and printed techniques, including photography and etching, which results in a collage of texture and colour. The work has evolved from Lisa’s ongoing investigation into fairy tales, questioning their morality and target audience from her perspective as a mother. Could these tales, which often feature violence to children, really serve as bed time reading or are they cautionary tales of morality for us all? Other pieces in the exhibition deal with the environmental issue of diminishing natural resources, centred around her large scale freehand machine embroideries which mimic the mark-making of her observational drawings. Lisa Earley is a Textile Artist and Educator living and working in Winchester. She often bribes her children with gingerbread to act as models for her pieces. www.lisa-earley.tumblr.com

GATHERED MEMORIES Gathered Memories is a delicate and intricate largescale textile installation in silk and gold thread created from the concept of memories, how they twist and turn through life. Originally created by artist Elizabeth Saunders as a degree piece for her BA at Winchester School of Art, this larger and more ambitious work has brought together five artists and is the culmination of three months’ work. The precious value of memory is captured in the gold thread, using simple stitch and repetition to embed it within the fragility of the silk, so that each stitch expresses memories through time. Cloth is known for its capacity to absorb, record and reflect qualities of time and place.

THE ROVING ART SCHOOL Kickstart creativity on location! Set in the inspiring location of Theatre Royal Winchester, this course will be 50% practical activity based in and around the site and 50% discussion. We will explore academic thinking on the nature of creativity, case studies of local and international creative professionals and their strategies for finding and sustaining inspiration, as well as practical approaches to developing a life enhancing creative habit. It includes exclusive access behind the scenes at the Theatre Royal, allowing participants a unique opportunity to explore the fabric, atmosphere, history, function and symbolism of the Theatre from a range of fascinating viewpoints. Each course consists of two hour sessions on Mondays from 10am to midday over 4 weeks. Group size 8 to 12. Reservations Reservations can be held for three working days. However, reservations cannot be made one week or less before a show. If payment is not received within this time, reservations will be released for general sale. Exchanges and Resales The exchange of tickets to a different performance of the same show is subject to a charge of £1.00 per ticket. If you are unable to attend a performance for which you have booked, the box office will try to re-sell your tickets, although the selling of any unsold seats must take priority. There is a service charge of £1.00 for each ticket resold. Exchanges and refunds are free of charge to Friends. We regret that refunds cannot be made. Concessions Reductions are usually available for students, under 16s, benefit claimants and senior citizens. Concessionary customers receive £2.00 reduction on most tickets. All relevant vouchers must be presented and concessions requested at the time of booking and discounts may not be applied to tickets already purchased.
