Rutherford & Son by Githa Sowerby edited for Northern Broadsides by Blake Morrison
Kindly sponsored by
Your father is a control freak The family business is a millstone round your neck Home feels like a prison And yet you have dreams… This powerful drama written and set in the North of England, 1912, is an unflinching portrayal of an industrial Edwardian family on the brink of collapse. John Rutherford is a tyrannical patriarch, blind to the hopes and feelings of his family. The success of the family-owned glassworks, Rutherford & Son, takes precedence over everything… even happiness. In a household run on fear, cracks begin to appear. The emotional pitch builds up like a pressure cooker. The dramatic voltage intensifies as Rutherford’s absolute authority is challenged and a catastrophic family mutiny begins to unfold, threatening to destroy his world and his factory.

BEING
COOPER Las Vegas, 1954. In a small hotel room the up-and-coming Tommy Cooper faces the prospect of his first big failure. With the show closing and a warring relationship with his manager, Tommy finds an offer on the table and a drink in his hand. Powerful, provocative, painfully funny and true, Green’s astonishing play finds both the brilliance in Britain’s most famous comic and explores the pressures and loneliness of fame. The man who could make you laugh just by walking on to stage comes vividly alive in this confrontational new play. The play also tells the story of three other people in Tommy’s life. There’s his dour Scottish manager Miff Ferrie, with whom Tommy is locked in what he calls ‘a hate-hate relationship’. We meet Billy
Glason, a one-time vaudeville act who has set himself the almost impossible task of selling Cooper a huge collection of jokes. And, finally, there is Mary Kay – the woman who Tommy fell in love with and came to rely on. There was only one woman she couldn’t compete with: Tommy’s wife. This excellent cast brings the Tommy Cooper legend vividly to life in this award-nominated production. Being Tommy Cooper by Tom Green, stars Damian Williams as Tommy Cooper. Winchester Operatic Society presents
BILLY (A musical based on Billy Liar) Winchester Operatic Society continues its centenary year with the musical Billy – based on the novel Billy Liar. Life is very complicated for our Billy! He is desperate to break out from his mundane life as an undertaker’s clerk in sixties Yorkshire – where he is courting at least two, possibly three, eligible young ladies who each have their eye on an elusive engagement ring! He escapes to various extravagant fantasies in his wonderfully vivid imagination – one minute he’s a glamorous Oscar-winning Hollywood movie star, the next he’s a famous Rock’n’Roll songster and sometimes even President of his own invented country – where only he gets to make up all the rules! But when will his tangled web of outrageous lies come crashing down around his ankles, and what will become of Billy Liar…?! 8
With an amusing and witty script by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (The Likely Lads and Auf Wiedersehen Pet) Billy has outstanding songs, hilarious dialogue and big musical routines! THE ARTICULATE HAND Performed by Andrew Dawson Our hands are more than just tools; they are a vital part of our personalities. Andrew Dawson presents the human hand in all its subtlety and complexity. With insight and humour, he conveys what miraculous and expressive devices our hands really are. With a mix of live performance, interviews, old movie clips and music, Andrew Dawson works with neuroscientist and author Jonathan Cole to uncover the grace, beauty and psychological consequences of impairments of the hand. The Articulate Hand is the perfect bridge between the layperson and the scientist. ‘If you’ve never found Shakespeare’s comedies funny, do try this.’ ★★★★The Guardian

Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory Directed by Andrew Hilton Bristol’s nationally renowned company makes its first visit to Theatre Royal Winchester with this darkly comic early romance in which friendship and love, and loyalty and betrayal are the real players. Two lifelong friends – the two young gentlemen of the title – are parted first by circumstance, and then by rivalry in love. Can their loyalty to each other survive the test, or will new loyalties drive out the old? How deep into perfidy can one be driven by sexual obsession? And what do even the most adored of women count for in a profoundly masculine world? Shakespeare’s vision is both comic and shocking – and extraordinarily modern. In 2001 SATTF won a National award – the Empty Space/Peter Brook Award – and the company’s reputation spread throughout the UK and beyond. www.sattf.org.uk Running time: approx. 2 hrs 30 mins (including interval)

Age recommendation: 14+ due to full male/female nudity and strong content Belarus Free Theatre (BFT) is a company of 25 people – some in Minsk, some in London – who are one of the very few hopes for the intellectual and artistic freedom of the 10 million people of Belarus. Adapted for the stage by David Wood Witches are the most dangerous of all living creatures on earth. There’s nothing they hate so much as children, and they’ll try anything to get rid of them, however they can. When an orphaned girl and her grandmother take a holiday to the seaside they stumble upon the Annual Witches Convention and discover their

MUSICAL MASH UP
SLAYING SHAKESPEARE
If you like musicals you’ll love this one. Come with us on a week long journey as we create an entirely new musical… from scratch. Working together, we’ll decide on the songs, make up the story and all (hopefully) before our time runs out at the end of the week! At the end of the week, you’ll perform to an invited audience on the Theatre Royal stage complete with lights, music and a couple of surprises thrown in for good measure.
The whole world is a stage and we want you on it. Do you know your Hamlet from your Horatio? Your Richards from you Henrys? Your Bottom from your Puck? Who cares…? This is a weeklong acting school for young performers looking to explore the world of theatre and Shakespeare. MONDAY 3 – FRIDAY 28 JUNE
KITES: NATURALLY INSPIRED by John Browning This stunning exhibition of kites made from leaves, petals and natural materials marries form, material, colour and texture in the most intricate and delicate structures. The materials themselves suggest arrangement and balance, brought together to display the nature of the materials, to achieve unity, to please the eye – to fly ! John Browning, now retired from his profession as a chemist, has been making kites for over 40 years. His favourite media have always been natural materials – paper, silk and bamboo. Inspired by Claude Lea Comallonga in France, he took up papermaking and the use of plant materials to create his kites. Living things are collected, cooked and arranged into structures which capture their beautiful patterns. Leaves, petals, plants and trees are incorporated into the many different kite creations. Then, when the wind is kind, these creations are put into the sky. They find their element – the air, the place where they belong – where they are free and they become… kites! Commissions accepted. www.johnbrowningkites.org 26

EACH A GLIMPSE AND GONE FOR EVER! by Caroline Hall Caroline Hall’s paintings are inspired by the Robert Louis Stevenson poem From a Railway Carriage. A Masters graduate from Winchester School of Art, Caroline uses digital video shot from train and car windows as the springboard for her abstract depictions of the fleeting moment. This exhibition brings together work from the last five years; landscapes glimpsed at speed and translated into streaks of brilliant colour on the surface of aluminium; pixel freeze frames layered up as fragments of light and form. Bluebells, autumn trees in the Itchen Valley, the train journey to Waterloo, the souk in Marrakech, and most recently a series of
paintings based on London tube journeys which have been seen by thousands of commuters on a giant billboard at South Kensington tube station. Caroline’s previous profession as a BBC TV reporter remains a key influence on her work. She has held several solo exhibitions in London and won awards here and in New York. Her paintings are in private and public collections throughout the UK and abroad. She lives and works in Winchester, and her new studio The Winchester Studio and Gallery is open to the public weekdays and weekends. www.thewinchesterstudio.co.uk www.carolinehall.net
