WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HOME’S HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING ENERGY COSTS

Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household spends almost $2,000 a year on energy bills?

Did you know heating and air conditioning operating costs can account for as much as half of that? The oil or gas burned to heat our home and the electricity used to keep our equipment running can be a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions.With a few simple steps, you can stay comfortable, save money and protect the environment.

1. KEEP HEAT OUT During the summer months, keep your blinds closed and window treatments over large windows. Blocking the sun’s rays will make your home easier to cool and keep your air conditioning system from running so often.

2. USE NATURE’S FREE ENERGY During winter months, pull back window treatments and open blinds to allow the sun to warm your home naturally. Close curtains on the shady side of the house.

3. LEAVE THE THERMOSTAT ALONE Continuously changing your thermostat settings wastes a lot of energy. Consider a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust temps at preset times. When used properly, it can save you money. Change the temps so your system runs less when everyone is sleeping.

4. MAKE SURE YOUR HOUSE IS AIR TIGHT Seal air leaks at drafty doors, fireplaces and windows with caulk or weather stripping. Adding the proper amount of new insulation can pay for itself in reduced heating and cooling costs.

5. DON’T LET ENERGY ESCAPE Running your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans too often will cause your heating or cooling system to work harder.

6. KEEP IT CLEAN A little bit of dirt can cause major problems. Get in the habit of changing your air filters every thirty days. Keep your outdoor unit clean and free of leaves and debris.

SIGNS YOUR CAR NEEDS SERVICE

1. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR OTHER DASHBOARD WARNINGS As ambiguous as a “check engine” light may be, your car’s on-board diagnostic system is essential to keeping the engine running efficiently.

Flashing or blinking warning lights or check engine indicators should be addressed as soon as possible.

2. OIL SPOTS UNDER THE CAR Have you noticed dark brown oil spots on your garage floor or driveway? Not only are the stains unsightly, they indicate your vehicle is leaking precious motor oil. The problem could be as minor as an oil filter or drain plug not secured tightly or as major as compromised gasket somewhere in the engine.

3. SQUEALING OR SQUEAKING WHEN BRAKING Many vehicle manufacturers and brake components engineer their brakes to emit a high-pitch squeal or squeak when brake pads are near the end of their service life. Squealing or squeaking can also indicate that brake hardware has become too worn. Putting off simple brake repairs can quickly cause more costly damage.

4. CHIRPING OR SCREECHING FROM UNDER THE HOOD Drive belts, also known as serpentine belts, direct engine power to accessory systems like the power steering or AC. These belts can become frayed, brittle or glazed as they wear, which can create a chirping or screeching sound, especially on start-up. Belt replacement is a simple repair that’s relatively cheap.

5. HUMMING, GROWLING OR ROARING WHEN DRIVING If you notice these noises, your tires may be worn or deformed, and it’s time to replace them (which should help improve fuel economy). Another cause, especially if you notice the sound only when turning or changing lanes, is a bad wheel bearing. If you suspect a bad bearing, get the issue checked out immediately, as a seized or damaged bearing could leave you stranded.

Replacing or Installing Flooring

Flooring is one of the first things someone sees when entering a home.

Is your home welcoming to others? Does it make you happy, comfortable, and relaxed? There are many available types of flooring on the market to suit your needs. We’ll give you an idea of what to look for when deciding on whom and how you will replace/install flooring.

Communication: It is very important for the contractor to be attentive to your specific needs. The contractor should show enthusiasm for your project by suggesting ways to work within a budget and specific concerns you may have.

In Person Estimates: Be sure that quotes are ‘inclusive’ of the total project costs. Some flooring companies may provide quotes that do not include elements that are required in order to complete the project.

Expect a company’s best price up front. Some companies may play games with pricing and may not be giving you their best price up front.

Material to be used: All products are not the same. Be sure to understand performance differences of products and be sure to pursue value and not just the lowest price. Flooring is remodeling–understand that a project that is properly installed may create a temporary inconvenience in your house. A contractor should be able to tell you what products and materials he would likely use for your project. He should also offer you several options (when applicable) when selecting products, materials and techniques. Be sure to view samples in the largest size possible, and under a variety of lighting conditions in your home. This will help you make the best color choice.

Warranties/Insurance: Get all guarantees, warranties and promises in writing. Don’t assume that just because your house was built “up to code” that there will not be problems that have to be corrected before new floor coverings are installed.

BEFORE YOU HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN

Before hiring an electrician, know their qualifications by asking the right questions:

1. ARE YOU LICENSED, BONDED AND INSURED? These components help you in case something goes wrong.

2.WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE DO THEY HAVE? The longer they’ve been on the job, and the more continuing education they’ve received, the more likely they are to know the ins and outs of different systems.

3. WHO’S DOING THE WORK? Will it be the owner, or a licensed journeyman electrician? If apprentices are on the job, who will be overseeing them? Additionally, if the electrician uses subcontractors, they may not be covered by the contractor’s licensing and insurance, so make sure everyone is protected.

4. ARE THEY UP TO DATE WITH THE NATIONAL ELECTRICIAL CODE? The NEC sets the standard in most states, and it’s updated every three years. A good electrician will be up to date on the most recent edition.

5. DO YOU OFFER A WARRANTY? Ask whether the parts or labor both are under warranty and how long that warranty is effective.

The Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son [Jesus Christ], that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” — a complete life full of purpose (John 10:10).

Here's the problem: man is sinful and separated from God. We have all done, thought or said bad things, which the Bible calls “sin.” The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The result of sin is death, spiritual separation from God (Romans 6:23). The good news?

Jesus died in our place so we could have a relationship with God and be with Him forever. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). But it didn’t end with His death on the cross. He rose again and still lives! “Christ died for our sins. … He was buried. … He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Jesus is the only way to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6).

Would you like to receive God’s forgiveness?

We can’t earn salvation; we are saved by God’s grace when we have faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. All you have to do is believe you are a sinner, that Christ died for your sins, and ask His forgiveness. Then turn from your sins—that’s called repentance. Jesus Christ knows you and loves you. What matters to Him is the attitude of your heart, your honesty.

MISTAKES TO AVOID BEING YOUR OWN BOSS

For greater success, please avoid these 5 mistakes often made by the self-employed: MISTAKE 1: Thinking that a long client list is the secret to success. Self-employed people often are advised to gather as many clients as possible as quickly as possible. This is supposed to warrant against the possibility of losing a client or two. The danger is that you will spend a lot of time finding and winning clients while neglecting the ones you already have.

When customer service suffers so will your bottom line.

That saying is “always” true. Make your goal to cultivate “anchor” clients that you can count on for the years to come.

MISTAKE 2: Overlooking valuable networking opportunities. Taking the time to invest in attending local networking opportunities accomplishes several things. You put a face to your company, you meet new people and build lasting relationships, you educate your community on who and what you do and you learn more creative ways to better your company. Social-media interest groups is another great way to network. Search for appropriate groups on Facebook by typing relevant words in Facebook’s search bar and then click on “Groups” on the results page.

MISTAKE 3: Undercharging. Most people set their prices too low when they first become self-employed. You are now responsible for your own health insurance, retirement plan contributions, marketing expenses and office expenses. Make sure you do the research to discover the average cost for what you are providing.

MISTAKE 4: Getting work but not getting paid. Many times getting the client to pay the bill is the most difficult part of a job. Before you work with a new client for the first time, enter the client’s company name into a search engine along with words such as “unpaid,” “bills” or “warning.” Proceed with extreme caution if you find warnings from other professionals who struggled to get paid by this client. If you are working with a first time client, it may be wise to get some payment up front or at least at small milestones.

MISTAKE 5: Not knowing what is next. Don’t become so focused on a particular project to where you fail to invest the time to line up the next job, leading to a work gap. Break away from your project enough to bid on new jobs so that the approval process can be completed in time for you to move to that job when needed.

STEPS TO ENHANCE YOUR PETS QUALITY OF LIFE

1. EXERCISE Staying active is crucial to staying healthy. Taking your dog for a walk every day is good for you and your pet. The length of time and the intensity will be determined by your dog’s stamina and fitness level. For your cat: Buy a few interactive cat toys (including wand toys, such as Da Bird) and exercise your cat at least 10 minutes a day.

2. HEALTH DIET If your pets are doing well on their current food, there is no reason to change just because they have turned a certain age. Your veterinarian can offer further advice. And of course, clean fresh water should be available at all times in more than one place.

3. KEEP TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY A healthy mouth does not smell.

Gums should not be red or bleeding. Brushing a few times a week can help keep your pet’s mouth healthy. Use pet enzyme toothpaste and a toothbrush made for animals. For more instruction, check with your veterinarian.

4. REGULAR VETERINARY CARE Immune systems can weaken with age, making an older pet more susceptible to disease and infection. Vaccinations should be kept current and a regular physical check by the vet can help prevent illness.

5. DO YOU OFFER A WARRANTY? An older cat or dog may become more easily agitated and act out with aggressive behavior that is uncommon for them. There is a type of senility that pets can develop which can cause this change in behavior. Any changes in the home environment, especially if there will be new pets, pet sitters or other visitors coming into your home, should be done gradually.

Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household spends almost $2,000 a year on energy bills?

Did you know heating and air conditioning operating costs can account for as much as half of that? The oil or gas burned to heat our home and the electricity used to keep our equipment running can be a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions.With a few simple steps, you can stay comfortable, save money and protect the environment.

1. KEEP HEAT OUT During the summer months, keep your blinds closed and window treatments over large windows. Blocking the sun’s rays will make your home easier to cool and keep your air conditioning system from running so often.

2. USE NATURE’S FREE ENERGY During winter months, pull back window treatments and open blinds to allow the sun to warm your home naturally. Close curtains on the shady side of the house.

As with any legal need, the Believer should invoke his or her rights to justice in the American system of jurisprudence. Recall how Paul when he was about to be arrested invoked his rights to Roman citizenship to thwart incarceration ( Acts 16:37) . He could have shrunk back into a “ woe is me “ posture. Instead, he invoked his rights. When you are in a car crash, you too , need to hire a proven expert in accident law; and if that expert also shares your worldview then all the better.

Some tort reformers vilify the personal injury lawyer as if the problems in the “system” would be all cured by getting rid of so-called greedy lawyers. But personal injury attorneys help you navigate the murky waters of insurance law and the court system.

You can be sure the insurance industry will hire a top notch defense attorney to fight your injury claim because an insurance company is rightly sworn to its shareholders to minimize payouts; certainly they will not freely pay benefits to an accident victim. So why would the accident victim who happens to be a person of faith roll over? QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PLUMBER

1. REFERENCES An experienced plumbing company should be able to give you the names of recent customers in your part of town.

2. ESTIMATES Get at least three written estimates from three different plumbers.

Documentation is often the best ammunition should things go wrong.

3. LICENSED, BONDED & INSURED Nearly every state in the U.S. requires plumbers to be licensed through a state professional licensing agency. Requirements vary on the need for professional licensing bonds, but all plumbers should have insurance to cover accidents that may happen while on your property.

4. PAYMENT SCHEDULE On a big job, especially a planned remodeling, the service provider may want the customer to pay 10 to 15 percent of the cost up front and 50 percent paid before the job is completed — especially if expensive materials need to be purchased for the project. Make sure you know what is expected. If you’re suspicious, contact your state’s professional licensing board or contracting board to ask about local standards.

Many states set limits on what is allowed to be paid up-front.

5. WHERE THE COMPANY IS LOCATED Be cautious of contractors who give you a post office box with no street address or use only an answering service. Never hire someone who comes unsolicited to your door and can’t provide you proof of qualifications — especially if he or she pressures you to hire fast and pay cash up front.

WARNING SIGNS YOU NEED A NEW ROOF

1. ROOF AGE How old is your existing asphalt shingle roof? Most experts agree that a typical roof will last between 20 and 25 years. It also depends on whether the old roof was removed and you only have one layer of shingles, and if it is properly ventilated. If the roof was installed over another layer or several layers and it is older than 20 years, chances are you need a new roof.

2. SHINGLES CURLING & BUCKLING Shingles that are curled or buckling are another sign that you may need a new roof. Look at the slopes of your home that get direct sunlight and if you notice the shingles are curling and losing granules, it could mean the shingles are past their life expectancy.

3. ROOFING VALLEYS If your roof shingles are falling apart or missing in this area, it’s a definite sign you need a new roof. Valleys are one of the most important areas of your roof. Snow and rain flow through valleys and into gutters. If the valley is compromised, you could be susceptible to roof leaks.

4. MISSING SHINGLES These are another sign your roof could be failing.

Check to see if all of the “tabs” are intact.

5. CHIMNEY FLASHING This is another area to be concerned about. If your flashing consists of roof cement or tar, it may need to be replaced with a long term, water-tight fitting, which would be a metal flashing system.

6. SHINGLE GRANULATES IN GUTTER Look in your gutters to see if they are loaded up with shingle granules. Roofs tend to lose more granules toward the end of their life cycle.

7. DAYLIGHT THROUGH THE ROOF BOARDS Check your attic to see if there is any daylight coming through the roof boards. Also check for moisture in the insulation.
