WAYS TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HOME’S HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING ENERGY COSTS

Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household spends almost $2,000 a year on energy bills?

Did you know heating and air conditioning operating costs can account for as much as half of that? The oil or gas burned to heat our home and the electricity used to keep our equipment running can be a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions.With a few simple steps, you can stay comfortable, save money and protect the environment.

1. KEEP HEAT OUT During the summer months, keep your blinds closed and window treatments over large windows. Blocking the sun’s rays will make your home easier to cool and keep your air conditioning system from running so often.

2. USE NATURE’S FREE ENERGY During winter months, pull back window treatments and open blinds to allow the sun to warm your home naturally. Close curtains on the shady side of the house.

3. LEAVE THE THERMOSTAT ALONE Continuously changing your thermostat settings wastes a lot of energy. Consider a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust temps at preset times. When used properly, it can save you money. Change the temps so your system runs less when everyone is sleeping.

4. MAKE SURE YOUR HOUSE IS AIR TIGHT Seal air leaks at drafty doors, fireplaces and windows with caulk or weather stripping. Adding the proper amount of new insulation can pay for itself in reduced heating and cooling costs.

5. DON’T LET ENERGY ESCAPE Running your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans too often will cause your heating or cooling system to work harder.

6. KEEP IT CLEAN A little bit of dirt can cause major problems. Get in the habit of changing your air filters every thirty days. Keep your outdoor unit clean and free of leaves and debris.

BEFORE YOU HIRE AN ELECTRICIAN

Before hiring an electrician, know their qualifications by asking the right questions:

1. ARE YOU LICENSED, BONDED AND INSURED? These components help you in case something goes wrong.

2.WHAT KIND OF EXPERIENCE DO THEY HAVE? The longer they’ve been on the job, and the more continuing education they’ve received, the more likely they are to know the ins and outs of different systems.

3. WHO’S DOING THE WORK? Will it be the owner, or a licensed journeyman electrician? If apprentices are on the job, who will be overseeing them? Additionally, if the electrician uses subcontractors, they may not be covered by the contractor’s licensing and insurance, so make sure everyone is protected.

4. ARE THEY UP TO DATE WITH THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE? The NEC sets the standard in most states, and it’s updated every three years. A good electrician will be up to date on the most recent edition.

5. DO YOU OFFER A WARRANTY? Ask whether the parts or labor both are under warranty and how long that warranty is effective.

Did you know that according to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American household spends almost $2,000 a year on energy bills?

Did you know heating and air conditioning operating costs can account for as much as half of that? The oil or gas burned to heat our home and the electricity used to keep our equipment running can be a huge source of greenhouse gas emissions.With a few simple steps, you can stay comfortable, save money and protect the environment.

1. KEEP HEAT OUT During the summer months, keep your blinds closed and window treatments over large windows. Blocking the sun’s rays will make your home easier to cool and keep your air conditioning system from running so often.

2. USE NATURE’S FREE ENERGY During winter months, pull back window treatments and open blinds to allow the sun to warm your home naturally. Close curtains on the shady side of the house.

3. LEAVE THE THERMOSTAT ALONE Continuously changing your thermostat settings wastes a lot of energy. Consider a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust temps at preset times. When used properly, it can save you money. Change the temps so your system runs less when everyone is sleeping.

4. MAKE SURE YOUR HOUSE IS AIR TIGHT Seal air leaks at drafty doors, fireplaces and windows with caulk or weather stripping. Adding the proper amount of new insulation can pay for itself in reduced heating and cooling costs.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PLUMBER

1. REFERENCES An experienced plumbing company should be able to give you the names of recent customers in your part of town.

2. ESTIMATES Get at least three written estimates from three different plumbers.

Documentation is often the best ammunition should things go wrong.

3. LICENSED, BONDED & INSURED Nearly every state in the U.S. requires plumbers to be licensed through a state professional licensing agency. Requirements vary on the need for professional licensing bonds, but all plumbers should have insurance to cover accidents that may happen while on your property.

4. PAYMENT SCHEDULE On a big job, especially a planned remodeling, the service provider may want the customer to pay 10 to 15 percent of the cost up front and 50 percent paid before the job is completed — especially if expensive materials need to be purchased for the project. Make sure you know what is expected. If you’re suspicious, contact your state’s professional licensing board or contracting board to ask about local standards.

Many states set limits on what is allowed to be paid up-front.

5. WHERE THE COMPANY IS LOCATED Be cautious of contractors who give you a post office box with no street address or use only an answering service. Never hire someone who comes unsolicited to your door and can’t provide you proof of qualifications — especially if he or she pressures you to hire fast and pay cash up front.

The Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son [Jesus Christ], that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” — a complete life full of purpose (John 10:10).

Here's the problem: man is sinful and separated from God. We have all done, thought or said bad things, which the Bible calls “sin.” The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The result of sin is death, spiritual separation from God (Romans 6:23). The good news?

Jesus died in our place so we could have a relationship with God and be with Him forever. “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). But it didn’t end with His death on the cross. He rose again and still lives! “Christ died for our sins. … He was buried. … He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4). Jesus is the only way to God. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6).

Would you like to receive God’s forgiveness?

We can’t earn salvation; we are saved by God’s grace when we have faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. All you have to do is believe you are a sinner, that Christ died for your sins, and ask His forgiveness. Then turn from your sins—that’s called repentance. Jesus Christ knows you and loves you. What matters to Him is the attitude of your heart, your honesty.

• I have the wisdom of God today. I will think the right thoughts, say the right words and make the right decisions in every situation I face today.

• My mouth speaks wisdom and my heart is filled with understanding. (Psalm 49:3) • I ask for, and receive, an abundant supply of wisdom and understanding today from God (James 1:5)...wisdom from above, wisdom that is pure, peaceable, gentle, unwavering, willing to yield, without hypocrisy. (James 3:17) • Wisdom and understanding are better than silver and gold and nothing I desire can compare with them; therefore, I make it my ambition and desire to have understanding and wisdom; therefore I know I will have all of the other desires of my heart (Proverbs 8:10-11)
