Bridge the gap WHY IS THIS YEAR DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER YEARS? Temple Sinai President, Murphy Leopold, recently said, “We are going through what we hope will be recorded as the most difficult episode in our history.” Jacobson Sinai Academy K-8 is in its final trimester. Our Early Childhood Education Center, Religious School, and Camp Sinai will continue to operate in their strong tradition. While we are finishing a positive year academically, we are also experiencing the expense and transition of closing the school after 35 years of operation. This transition is bittersweet and challenging, and extremely difficult financially. We need to “Bridge the Gap” in funding between our closing one school and welcoming our tenant, BridgePrep. I urgently need you to attend a special Congregational Meeting on Wednesday, April 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Feinbloom Sanctuary so that you can learn the details of this transition, replace rumors with facts, and help guarantee the continuity of our precious Temple Sinai. You will learn where we have been, where we are now, and where we are heading in the immediate and longer-term future. Not only do we want to inform you, but we also want to engage you as ambassadors for a new Temple Sinai. Please join me, Rabbi Alan Litwak Seen at Sinai

Temple Sinai’s 60th Anniversary Shabbat & Sinai’s Sixties Simcha! Sage Kantor and Rose Ellen Glickman chaired a wonderful weekend where the partners of Temple Sinai celebrated 60 years in North Dade. On Friday night, we heard wonderful music by our own Cantor Norman and Cantor Shulkes along with the choir. Rabbi Litwak and Rabbi Kingsley had a spirited conversation about the past 50 years as the Temple grew into its new home and served the Reform Jews in the area. We laughed as we all reminisced about the past. We looked ahead to the future and then toasted with champagne and wonderful treats by the Baking Brigade. On Saturday night, it was time to party by dancing the hora, eating wonderful food, drinking and dancing. The Silent Auction brought excitement to those who won their prize and the raffle prizes were treasured by the winners. It was such a fun evening taking our pictures at the photo booth and visiting with our friends. Thank you to Ellen Halem, Bob Mirel, Howard Ross, Renee Yeslow, Norman Leopold, Robin Leader-Landau, Sharron Botwinick, Sara Frankel, Barbara Silverman and Carol Moss who

Of course, Susan Warech and the office staff were invaluable to putting this together. Again, Rabbi Litwak, Rabbi Kingsley, Cantor Norman and Cantor Shulkes made Friday night into a special memory.

“Temple Sinai at 60” Poem by Rabbi Ralph P. Kingsley Three score years ago, in Florida weather, A small group of Jews planned a get together. The purpose it seems, it wasn’t the norm, Was to start a new Temple, they’d call it Reform.

But as one of the fundraisers, without being snide, Reminded us each, that God would provide. Provide He/She did, there’s good reason for cheers, At all that’s transpired these past sixty years. Award winning buildings constructed in stages, For people whose lives spanned a spectrum of ages.

Who came here for prayer and for Jewish learning To give voice to their dreams and to hearts filled with yearning. Inspired by our cantors who have helped us to sing, Not too much Hebrew, Irving Shulkes, Cantor Norman, what richness they bring. men’s heads wore no We’ve witnessed so much as the days have gone by, hat, Have shared in the laughter, at times had to cry. One day Rosh Hashanah, and that would be that. Shepped nachas with B’nai Mitzvah, they’ve come through by They hired a rabbi, but he didn’t work out, the score, Then they hired another, that’s how that came about. But we’ve also known the trauma of Israel at war. They built a building that few would approve, We helped Save Soviet Jewry in those challenging days when, So at ten years old, they decided to move. We remembered the Shoah and vowed, Never Again! The Board agreed, a vote they would take, Bottom line we have much of which to be proud, North Miami they’d leave and come to Sky Lake. Proclaim love for Sinai; Say it aloud. With money they had from the sale they were able, To purchase six acres, the old Greynold’s Park Stable. Tall trees, lots of shade, and peacocks that roam, By the side of a river, rose Sinai’s new home.

A new generation, in its own special manner, Will surely come forth and carry the banner. Led by a rabbi erudite and urbane, Well known to you all, Alan Litwak’s his name.

Yet again a new rabbi they needed to find, Ralph P. Kingsley appeared with ideas of all kind. He’d cover his head, he’d chant from the Torah, Add more Hebrew, Tradition, an intense Jewish aura.

May he guide Temple Sinai to success without sorrow, Remembering the past while envisioning tomorrow. A time when our People’s strength will increase, God willing we’ll live in a world filled with peace.

They would need a new building to study and pray, And a means by which, all the bills to pay.

Till then raise a glass, put aside your fears, And make a l’chaim, to the next 60 years.

BridgePrep Academy to open a K-5 school at Temple Sinai’s Campus We wanted to inform you that Miami Dade County Public Schools voted to grant a charter to Bridge Prep Academy to open a K-5 school beginning in August, 2017. BridgePrep Academy’s mission reads: “Every child learns best in a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where high academic expectations, self-esteem, good character, and an appreciation for the arts are promoted. BridgePrep Academy’s mission is to provide a challenging academic curriculum that will encompass an enriched Spanish language program, technology and experiences that will enable students to develop in all areas. BridgePrep Academy’s goal is to educate well rounded individuals and enable students to reach their maximum potential.“ Vision: “BridgePrep Academy believes that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, nurturing and

stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. BridgePrep believes in a student-centered educational philosophy that emphasizes hands on learning and students actively participating in learning. Students will be able to discover through hands on, engaging activities that will incorporate different approaches to accommodate each child’s learning style and as a result, raise academic achievement.“ While we were hoping that the Charter school would be a K-8, we have learned that the first year it will only serve K-5 students, but they will be expanding into the Middle School grades in subsequent years. At Bridge Prep’s request, we will open our Kemelhor Chapel to them for an Open House on April 5 at 6:00pm. In the meantime, if you are interested in enrolling, here is the link to their enrollment forms: www.bridgeprepacademy.com/ apps/forms2/?f=6592

Passover: Customs and Rituals Pesach, known as Passover in English, is a major Jewish spring festival, commemorating the Exodus from Egypt over 3,000 years ago. The ritual observance of this holiday centers around a special home service called the seder (meaning "order") and a festive meal; the prohibition of chametz (leaven); and the eating of matzah (an unleavened bread). On the fifteenth day of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar, Jews gather with family and friends in the evening to read from a book called the haggadah, meaning "telling," which contains the order of prayers,

rituals, readings, and songs for the Passover seder. Today, the holiday is a celebration of freedom and family. There are several mitzvot (commandments) unique to Passover, which are evident in the customs and rituals of the holiday to this day: matzah (the eating of unleavened bread); maror (the eating of bitter herbs); chametz (abstention from eating leaven); b’iur chametz (removal of leaven from the home); and haggadah (participation in the seder meal and telling the story).

The Seder The seder is the centerpiece of any Passover experience. The word seder literally means "order," and the Passover seder has 15 separate steps in its traditional order. These steps are laid out in the Haggaddah, The content of the seder can be summed up by the following Hebrew rhyme:

custom to wash before dipping foods in a liquid or sauce. Karpas: Eat the greens dipped in salt water. Green symbolizes spring; salt water reminds us of the salty tears of our ancestors who endured slavery. Yachatz: Break the middle of the matzah. Half of it is for the afikoman.

Kadeish, Ur'chatz, Karpas, Yachatz, Magid, Rachtzah, Motzi, Matzah, Maror, Korech, Shulchan Orech, Tzafun, Barech, Hallel, Nirtzah

Maggid: Tell the story of Passover. This is really what the Haggadah is all about. It includes the Four Questions, the Four Sons (and we add daughters), and the Ten Plagues. This section ends with the second cup of wine. Make sure you drink it in a comfortable position. Rachtzah: With the proper blessing, wash your hands before you begin the meal. Motzi-Matzah: This is a double blessing said over the matzah (as unleavened bread and as a bread substitute) just prior to eating the meal. Eat the matzah (the top and half of the middle of the three) in a comfortable position.

Seder Plate Your Seder plate should include a hard-boiled egg, a roasted lamb bone (chicken neck), greens, bitter herbs, salt water, and charoset. Provide salt water for dipping for everyone. The greens may be parsley or celery. You can use horseradish or romaine lettuce as a bitter herb. There are lots of different Charoset recipes, it usually contains apples, nuts, cinnamon, and a little wine. Place three matzot on a plate. Set aside a piece of matzah that will be the afikoman. Some families have the children hide it, while the parents have to either find it or ransom it back. Others have the parents hide it and the children will have to find it. The idea is to keep the children awake and attentive throughout the pre-meal proceedings, waiting for this part.

The Order of the Seder

Maror: After saying the appropriate blessing, eat the horseradish. Korech: Called the Hillel sandwich; eat a sandwich made of matzah, horseradish, and charoset. Use the bottom matzah. Shulchan Orech: Now is the time to eat all those good things on the table. Don’t forget to keep on singing! Tzafun: Dessert time—but begin with eating the hidden afikoman (once it is found or ransomed). Barech: Birkat Hamazon, grace after the meal. Say it over the third cup of wine while you are in a comfortable position.

Kadesh: Kiddush (sanctification) over the first cup (of four) of wine. Drink it in a comfortable position.

Hallel: Say the Hallel psalms. After you are finished, drink the fourth cup of wine. Don’t forget to stay comfortable. Then pour Elijah’s cup and have someone open the door for him.

Urchatz: Wash your hands—but without the usual blessing. It is an old

Nirtzah: This concludes the meal.

Passover: Songs for the Seder Ilu asa veloheihem velo harag bechoreihem

Mah Nishtanah

Velo harag bechoreihem dayenu

For the youngest at the table, the moment we reach Mah Nishtanah is their time to shine. It's when they get to sing the four questions, Mah Nishtanah, "What's Different?" or " Is this Night Different from All Other Nights?" The song is meant to spark youngsters' curiosity so they'll want to learn about Passover rituals.
