News from our ECE! We are winding down the 2016 - 2017 school year in a spectacular way! On Sunday, May 7 we celebrated an awesome Family Fun Day and it was a great success - great weather, great crowds, great activities, great food! Everyone had the best time! The Bounce House, Petting Zoo and Karate Demo had the largest crowds. There was a steady flow of children visiting the teachers' activities, which was so much fun! The day couldn't have been more perfect! A special thanks to all those who helped me organize and bring this event to fruition. Your participation and help meant everything to me! On Thursday, May 25 our PK4 children participated in our Moving Up Ceremony (graduation). That in itself tugs at our heart strings. When school ends on June 8, we will be as busy as ever preparing our classrooms for Summer Camp which begins Tuesday, June 13. Camp registrations are coming in by the bundle! Marjie and Stephanie are planning a fantastic summer for our campers this year with an innovative J-STEM program for our older campers!

During the summer, you will receive a mailing of forms for you to complete and return to the school. Please watch for it and return all the forms as soon as possible so we can prepare for the 2017-18 school year. Our school calendar for next year will be sent home in the summer mailing. I want to take this moment to thank the PTO and all the parents who have supported us throughout the school year! All it takes is one kind word of appreciation from our parents or a big hug from one deliriously happy child, to make all the difference in the world! Our teachers and I are looking forward to another spectacular school year coming up. My head is already spinning with new and innovative programs we can bring to the table. Our goal is to take something very good and make it even better! Until next week... Warm regards, Judy Mendelsohn ECE Director

International Choral Fest With no exaggeration and no intention to sound arrogant, (people who know me know it’s not my style) I can assertively affirm that the 2017 Cantor Shulkes Spring Music Festival, held on April 30, presenting the International Choral Fest was extraordinary. And so equally was the Latin-style Kabbalat Shabbat held the Friday before. Over the past few weeks I only heard positive reactions about the concert and the service and that makes me think we are on the right path and we should continue to provide our Temple Partners and the wider community with events that bring us closer to our Jewish and musical tradition. The International Choral Fest proved to be the ideal combination and it’s my desire to continue to do more events like this in the future. The Kabbalat Shabbat service enhanced by the presence of my esteemed colleague and friend, Cantor Ari Litvak, transported us to a higher spiritual level.

I want to thank all the patrons, the “usual and new suspects this year” who have always been supportive of the Spring Music Festival. Your contribution is always important. And thank you to the three participant choirs: The Youth Choir for being part of the experience and the parents for supporting the idea. Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble and our choir co-conductor Juvenal Correa-Salas for the hard work you have put and the joy you have brought to the congregation. Choir Shirati and Cantor Ari Litvak for bringing your exquisite music and good vibe to these shores. We acknowledge that the commitment to come and sing with us, represents an act of chavruta, friendship that Temple Sinai and its choirs will treasure forever.

As I mentioned at the concert there are many people to thank that made this entire weekend possible so I’d like to take this opportunity to mention them once more.

I don’t need to get into further details of the entire weekend experience, because fortunately, Cantor Litvak sent me a few days ago a summary of his narrative of the events and I think that 1)it is redundant for me to reiterate concepts that he is already sharing in I really want to thank The Israelson Family Foundation for their continuous support in making the Spring Music Festival possible year his article and 2) it’s more meaningful to read the summary from our guests’ perspective. after year. Without The Israelson Family Foundation’s essential contribution, we could not have enjoyed a magnificent weekend In the following page you will find the narrative Cantor Livtak wrote. filled with good music and good food. Enjoy it. Thank you Lyanne L. Wassermann. I truly appreciate what you do for our choir and our congregation. It’s all about how much you care. It’s the heart you put in everything that matters. On behalf of Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble, thank you.

As we reached towards the end of the event the host choir surprised us by singing Cielito Lindo and the entire audience joined in with their voices. Then all the choirs joined together to sing the three last songs: Yerushalayim Shel Zahav (in Hebrew, English and Spanish), A Blessing and Song of Galilee. And after presenting the Temple Sinai choirs with a gift from our Bet-El choir it all ended with a powerful arrangement of the Hatikva.

Let’s read what our own people had to say about the 2017 Spring Music Festival! A “Note” of Thanks – Muchas Gracias to Cantor Ari Litvak, Cantor Norman and Choir Directors Connie and Juvenal The energy level was high and, even though we were nervous, we thoroughly enjoyed singing with Choir Shirati from Mexico and our own TSND Youth Choir at the 2017 Cantor Shulkes Spring Music Festival. Choir Shirati is a wonderful and accomplished choir, under the expert direction of Cantor Ari Litvak and choir director Connie Telez. They raised the bar for the TSND Adult Ensemble. While we worked very hard to prepare for the music festival learning songs in Hebrew, Spanish, English and Yiddish, we now know how much better we can be. Certainly Cantor Norman and Juvenal will push us even harder now and help us stretch our abilities. We loved the energy produced by Cantors Ari & Norman at Friday’s Kabbalat Shabbat. Their longtime friendship was apparent to everyone. They reminded us of when Billy Joel and Elton John performed together! On Sunday we enjoyed hearing all of our voices meld together.

It was a work of hope for a better world, a work of love! A lot of work went into this endeavor. The passion for excellence made me feel lucky to be a member of Temple Sinai! - Jan Schneider (Temple Sinai partner) "The International Choral Fest was a very special afternoon on so many levels. Putting together different nations, ages, languages- all harmonizing together for one of the most pleasant sounds, and afternoons I can remember for a long time. Everyone displayed passion, heart and togetherness. The music was fabulous, uplifting, and wellcoordinated. Thank you Cantor Norman for putting together the talent and beautiful music- we need more!" - Vicki Hatch (Mother of Alan and Jacki Hatch, members of the Youth Choir)

Latin Style Shabbat and International Choral Fest We had the joy to be in our beautiful synagogue and enjoy the musical What a pleasure it was to host Connie at our house over the weekend. weekend in April. Friday night, we were inspired, as always, by the music, Heather practiced Spanish and Connie increased her ease with English. but having our guests from Mexico made it even more special. Sunday was She even began to tell jokes in English! outstanding as the guests from Comunidad Bet El Mexico, Choir Shirati And Choir Shirati knows how to have a good time! We joined them for with their conductor Ari Litvak and our own choir led by Cantor Norman supper on Sunday night to celebrate a successful concert. There was lots of delighted us with the musical selections. Thank you to all the people who good singing and good food. The feeling we got from our fellow Adult made this a memorable weekend. It takes a lot of effort and support to Ensemble members is “Let’s do this again soon…and maybe in Mexico!” host an event like this and it was seamless (at least to the audience). We - Heather and Marty Oppenheimer (members of Temple Sinai Choral loved it! Ensemble) - Carol and Gary Moss (Temple Sinai partners) Some Thoughts on Singing in the Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble For a number of years the Cantor and several of my friends had been urging me to join the choral ensemble. I always said, “Maybe when I retire.” Then I retired. I didn’t know if I’d be available for Rosh Hashanah so I didn’t come to rehearsals last fall, but then one of my friends in the choir (Carol Schectman) told me that the Cantor had made up a binder for me. I realized I was committed. And I am so glad I joined. The concert with our Mexican friends was a challenge and a joy. The challenge: I was away from Miami for the month of March, so I really only had one month to learn the songs. The joy: everything, even the challenge. When I met the people of Shiratí we had an instant bond. We all loved singing and we all loved being Jews. Hearing them raise their voices in song inspired me. I had been working hard all along, but at that point I worked even harder. When we were on that stage, I heard my voice merge in song with all those other beautiful voices. It felt miraculous. I should add that the performances this year have been the first times I have ever sung in a choir, or in harmony. I studied piano as a child and teenager, and I never got extremely good at it, but I did learn to read music. Suddenly, rehearsing with the choir, I realized that I was reading music for voice, something I never imagined I’d be able to do. So, in addition to gaining a new pleasure in life—singing in harmony, with others, and in front of an audience—I gained a new skill, sight-reading for voice. Thank you, Cantor Norman, for making up that binder. Thank you, Juvenal, for always encouraging me, even when I knew I didn’t sound great. Learning new things and enjoying new experiences are what retirement is about. Thank you, Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble—and Gracias, Shiratí! - Meri-Jane Rochelson (member of Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble) What is the most important aspect of our Temple Sinai congregation? The magical carpet weaved with our diversity. I feel honored to have spent a wonderful evening with the Mexican choir. Besides their beautiful voices, I was impressed with their camaraderie. The highlight of the evening was when the Mexican choir, the Temple Sinai choir, and the Temple Sinai youth choir blended their voices!

It is hard to believe a few weekends ago the Temple Sinai Community enjoyed the 42nd annual Cantor Irving Shulkes Spring Music Festival. The years fly by and the music just keeps getting better and better. This year was, in my opinion, the best one yet!! Cantor Norman and the Adult and Children's Choirs of Temple Sinai welcomed Cantor Ari Litvak and his choir from Comunidad Bet El, Mexico. The performance of each of the choirs separately and together was joyous beyond belief. The festival actually began Friday night with an Erev Shabbat service filled with songs. My husband, Don, said he'd never enjoyed a service ever as much as that one. Shabbat morning, Cantor Litvak sang at the Bat Mitzvah of Lily Foster. His voice took my breath away. The culmination of the weekend's activities was the Sunday performances by both outstanding Argentine Cantors, Norman Cohen Falah and Ari Litvak and the choirs. It was a special moment in Temple Sinai's musical history and our wonderful Cantor Shulkes was there to enjoy it too. A truly perfect Spring Music Festival!! - Sandy Goodman (Temple Sinai partner)

If you want to join the fun, the joy and the uplifting musical experience, then consider joining the choir. Please contact Cantor Norman at cantor.norman@tsnd.org for further information on how to become part of our amazing Temple Sinai Choral Ensemble.

Alan Hatch and HaZamir which provides Jewish teens with a high-level choral experience in a Jewish environment. So Alan joined the Miami Chapter of HaZamir, where he rehearsed weekly 4 parts choral music and culminated the season singing on March 26 at the Annual Gala Concert at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. I asked Alan to share his experience about his first year with HaZamir. In his own words he wrote the following:

Alan Hatch (2nd from right) and his HaZamir Miami and HaZamir Boca Raton peers getting ready to sing a Salute to Jerusalem with the Zamir Choral Foundation on Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York

Alan Hatch and his musical talent are no stranger to us. He joined Temple Sinai’s Youth Choir in 2014 and a year later became a Bar Mitzvah here. Since then, Alan has led Shabbat Service on several occasions and his voice has captivated our congregation.

“Hazamir is a life changing experience. At first, it may seem like a small choir that rehearses once a week, but then there is festival where all 400 kids come together from all over the country and Israel. We sing beautiful songs with complicated harmonies. It is truly a magical experience. Being a part of this group made me a more mature and well rounded person. I am exposed to complex music and it helps me grow as a musician. This incredible group also brings people together and creates new friendships that last. I can truly tell you that this is a life changing group and my life will never be the same because of it.“ Kol Hakavod Alan! Temple Sinai is very proud of you. Keep up the good work and keep sharing your beautiful voice with us.

Seeing his potential, last year I suggested Alan to join “HaZamir”: The International Jewish High School Choir, which is Cantor Norman a network of choral chapters across the United States and Israel

Sisterhood Circle News We kicked off the year with a Welcome Back to Sinai party and rolled right into the High Holy Days where we hosted our annual Break the Fast. Our women came together throughout the year to pray, play, shop and learn together. It was another good year for the Sisterhood Circle as we attempted to be an arm of the Temple that functioned in many roles. Thank you to all who participated and we look forward to next year as we try new programming and projects. Our end of the year dinner (Girl’s Night Out) was a great success and a lot of fun.

Look for our calendar for next year and as always, your suggestions are really appreciated. Please contact one of us with any ideas you might want to implement. Please watch for our announcement of Honey From the Heart and order for your friends, family and neighbors a gift sure to please. Plan to Break the Fast with us, your Temple Sinai family this year after we listen to the closing prayers of Yom Kippur. We always need volunteers for all our projects, and we try to provide help in our Temple Office so let us know if you have free time. The Mitzvah of Hospitality: Be a Greeter! Just as the Union for Reform Judaism has embarked on a wonderful new initiative, Audacious Hospitality, to engage and embrace all who want to nurture their Jewish identities, Temple Sinai also strives to be “A Community Nurturing Fuller Jewish Life.” At this time, we are looking for friendly faces to fulfill the mitzvah of hospitality and serve as

greeters for our Shabbat services. Whether it is on a Friday night, Saturday morning, or occasionally for Shabbat Minchah (afternoon service), your help in welcoming our partners and guests is always greatly appreciated. It is also a wonderful opportunity to meet your fellow congregants. If you are interested in having your name placed on our list of volunteers, please call the Temple office at 305-932-9010.

Kosher Food Bank There are more and more people in our community in desperate need of food to fill bare pantries – and empty stomachs.

Please donate kosher food and other items certified as kosher with any of these symbols:

That’s why they depend on Jewish Community Services (JCS) Kosher Food Bank, the largest food bank in South Florida that Jewish households observing dietary laws can turn to during times of hardship, supplying critically important food items and other daily necessities to those in need.

You may deposit your donations in any of the collection bins around Temple Sinai's campus.
