Being Present in the Moments I see more of life than the average person. I feel the pain and the sadness, but also the happiness and celebration. I listen to cries of despair and the shouts of “Mazel Tov!” I am present at each point on the march through life; at the arrival of a new baby, as they are carried into school for the first time, as they become Bar/Bat Mitzvah, get married, go through divorce, and are buried. I get to witness the mundane and the extraordinary. All of this is occasionally the curse, but mostly the blessing of being a rabbi. Yet, even as I am present; physically, emotionally, and spiritually in these moments, I am still the rabbi. I am shaliach tzibbur (the one who facilitates others’ prayer) or mesadder kiddushin (the one who helps two people become each other’s spouse) or the one who performs levayat hamet (who accompanies the dead to their burial). There is an appropriate distance or detachment because, even as I am invited to share these with you, I am keenly aware that they are your moments. One of the sadnesses of being a rabbi is how often I see people not being fully present in those moments. They become spectators in their own lives. They are so emotionally detached from God’s world that they fail to express it. They physically numb themselves to the point where they cannot experience life
through the senses that God gave us. They see a religious event as an end and not a means to connect spiritually with God and the world around them. I see this most often with people who spend more time trying to capture the photos of the moment, than experiencing the moment itself. On April 1, Deborah and I will experience our youngest daughter, Yael, become a Bat Mitzvah. If I learned anything from my first two daughters, it is how fleeting that moment will be. The ninety minutes of Shabbat morning tefilah, the two hours of luncheon, and the weekend of activities will all go by in the blink of an eye. Yet, in that moment, I am committed to being fully present. Part of what makes that moment so special is the ability to share it. In the same way as your moment would be diminished if I were not present, my family’s moment will be diminished if you are not there. As with each of our daughters, we print the invitation on the front of the Mosaic and will send it out electronically, in order to be environmentally and fiscally conscious. If you are reading this, then consider yourself personally invited to celebrate with us. It would be helpful for you to RSVP, but even if you forget, please come! Your presence will be a present to us!

News from our ECE! How does your garden grow?
Our ECE hallways get a face-lift!
Just ask Ms. Anat’s and Ms. Stephanie’s PK3 class. They have brought nature into their classroom! By planting spinach and lettuce seeds in our tower garden the children are learning how plants grow and what it takes to care for them, in addition to good health habits.
We are thrilled with the physical transformations in our ECE during the past two years, thanks to the success of our PTO. Last year, we replaced our classroom chairs and tables with the best furniture available on the market. During this past winter break, we painted our hallways and replaced our hallway floors with high quality materials. This summer, we are due for an upgrade of our technology equipment. Thank you to the PTO and school parents for making this happen!
News from JSA K-8
Using two balloons, two straws, rubber bands, modeling clay and an empty clear plastic bottle, the 5th grade students made a model of the lungs. By pulling and pushing the plastic added to the bottom of the bottle, they were able to see and demonstrate how the air is taken in through their mouth and nose, and then passed through the windpipe and throat (like the straw takes in air when the balloon at the bottom of the plastic bottle is pulled).
Grades 2 & 4 are working on plant lifecycle projects in science class. They had to grow seedlings and analyze best conditions for plants to grow.
Grade 3 went on a field trip to the Julius Littman Theater to see the play “Lights! Camera! Math!” Kindergarten children were told to create something using "symmetry." Look what they came up with! Future architects!
Amazing 5th Grade science project: 3D model of a plant or an animal cell!

Tu BiSh'vat - February 10 & 11 In Israel, another new year will soon be celebrated. Tu BiSh'vat, the "New Year of the Trees," is observed on the fifteenth day of the Hebrew month of Sh'vat. Tu BiSh'vat is not mentioned in the Torah. According to scholars, the holiday was originally an agricultural festival, corresponding to the beginning of spring in Israel. As in the case with many Jewish observances, a critical historical event served as a catalyst. After the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. and the exile that followed, many Jews felt a need to bind themselves symbolically to their former homeland. Tu BiSh'vat served in part to fill that spiritual need. As it was no longer possible to bring tithes to the Temple, Jews used this time each year to eat a variety of fruits and nuts that could be obtained from Palestine. The practice, a sort of physical association with the land, continued for many centuries.
The sixteenth and seventeenth century kabbalists (mystics) of Palestine elaborated on the exilic customs, creating a ritual for Tu BiSh'vat somewhat similar to the Passover seder. On Erev Tu BiSh'vat, they would gather in their homes for a fifteen-course meal, each course being one of the foods associated with the land. Between courses, they would read from an anthology called P'ri Eitz Hadar (Citrus Fruit), a compilation of passages on trees drawn from the Bible, the Talmud, and the mystical Zohar. Today in modern Israel, Tu BiSh'vat has become a national holiday, a tree planting festival for both Israelis and Jews throughout the world. Much of the credit for the great joy and spirit of the holiday is a direct result of the important work of the Jewish National Fund (www.jnf.org). Tu BiSh'vat may be observed in a variety of ways. Tu BiSh'vat seders are not just for mystics! Host a seder and celebrate the many wonderful fruits and nuts of Israel. While the food is cooking, keep busy by making a fun Tu BiSh'vat family activity.
Tu BiSh'vat Seder The Tu BiSh'vat seder, full of imagery and symbolism, is divided into four sections that represent the four seasons. This seder also is divided into four mystical “spheres,” each of which represents a different relationship between humans and the earth: Assiya (Actualization), Yetzira (Formation), Beriah (Creation), and Atzilut (Nobility).
varying shades of red, which represent the seasons: white for the bleak time of winter, white with a bit of red to represent the earth’s awakening in early spring, red with a bit of white representing the blossoming of late spring, and dark red to represent the fullness of all the growing plants and vegetation along with the heat of summer.
Many of our contemporary Tu BiSh'vat haggadot (texts that set forth the order of the seder) draw on its rituals. Often we group the fruits into three types: fruits with tough outer shells and edible interiors (melons, peanuts, pomegranates, coconuts, citrus, etc), fruits with edible exteriors and inedible pits (dates, olives, plums, peaches, apples, etc) and fruits As with the Passover seder, the Tu that are entirely edible (berries, figs, grapes, etc). These are said to BiSh'vat seder evolved to include four cups of wine or grape juice, but in represent different seasons and/or ways of being in the world.
Tu BiSh’vat Activities to Do at Home Make Recycled Paper
Tu BiSh'vat Treat Tree
For this activity, you’ll need: · Scrap paper · A piece of screening (approx. 10” x 10”) with the edges taped over to prevent wounds (duct tape works best) · Washbasin · Blender or food processor
Materials: · 1 foam ball for the tree (a 2 ½ inch diameter makes a small tree) · 1 terra cotta planter (size of your choice) · 1/2 foam ball (to fill the planter and hold up the tree) · A popsicle stick and green tape for the stem · Old towels · Toothpicks or the smallest size package of dowels you can find Gumdrops (for the berries) · Rolling pin · Candy to fill the planter (e.g., caramel jelly beans, chocolate chips) Tear the scrap paper into small pieces and soak it in hot water for half an If your tree is small like the one pictured (2 ½ inch in diameter foam hour. Take a handful of the paper, put it into a blender or food balls), you may want to break the dowels or toothpicks in half. For a processor, and add water until half-full. Blend until you no longer see larger size foam ball you can use the whole toothpick/dowel. pieces of paper. Pour the mixture over the screen (with a basin underneath to catch water). Shake the screen back and forth to get an even layer of fibers on the screen. It may be necessary to lower the screen into the water in the basin in order to even out the layer. Lift the screen carefully out of the water. Lay the screening between old towels. Roll with a rolling pin to get the fibers flat and even, then let dry for at least an hour. Gently remove the paper from the screen by turning the screen upside down and peeling the paper away from the edges. The rest of the paper should fall away from the screen.
Stick the dowels into the foam ball. Push a gumdrop on to the protruding end. Repeat until the foam ball is mostly covered. When you are two-thirds done, cover the popsicle stick with the green tape and insert it into the bottom of the ball. You can use a sharp knife to create a slit to make it easier to insert the ball. Finish covering the ball with gumdrop "berries." Take one foam ball and slice it in half. Place into the terra cotta planter flat side up. Push "tree" into the planter. (Again, use a knife to make a slit so it will go in easier.) Fill the bottom with candy.

Purim - March 11 & 12 Purim is celebrated with a public reading—usually in the synagogue—of the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther), which tells the story of the holiday. Under the rule of King Ahashverosh, Haman, the king's prime minister, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The reading of the megillah typically is a rowdy affair, punctuated by booing and noise-making when Haman's name is read aloud.
Hanukkah, traditionally is viewed as a minor festival, but elevated to a major holiday as a result of the Jewish historical experience. Over the centuries, Haman became the embodiment of every anti-Semite in every land where Jews were oppressed. The significance of Purim lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has become: a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish survival against all odds. In the Book of Esther, we read that Purim is a time for "feasting and merrymaking," as well as for "sending gifts to one another and presents to the poor" (Esther 9:22). In addition to reading the Megillah, celebrants dress in costumes, have festive parties, perform "Purim-spiels," silly theatrical adaptations of the story of the Megillah, send baskets of food (mishloach manot) to friends, and give gifts to the poor (matanot l'evyonim).
Purim is an unusual holiday in many respects. First, Esther is the only biblical book in which God is not mentioned. Second, Purim, like
Mishloach manot Mishloach manot are gifts of food that friends (and prospective new friends!) exchange on Purim. They are meant to ensure that everyone has enough food for the Purim feast held later in the day, and to increase love and friendship among Jews and their neighbors. These gifts are frequently referred to by their Yiddish name, shalachmanos. Jewish families make mishloach manot baskets at home and distribute then to friends. Many families also make hamantaschen to include in
these baskets and to enjoy at home. Hamantaschen (Yiddish for Haman's pockets) are three-cornered pastries filled with poppy seeds (mohn in Yiddish), fruit preserves, chocolate, or other ingredients that are traditionally eaten on Purim. In Israel during the weeks leading up to Purim, the aroma of freshly baked hamantaschen can be smelled on every block. Their triangular shape is thought to be be reminiscent of Haman's hat or ears. Matanot l'evyonim (gifts to the poor) are gifts given at this season to those in need so that they, too, can celebrate Purim with a special meal. Many families have committed to participating in this important social justice aspect of the holiday.
Purim Activities to Do at Home · · · ·
1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup orange juice Filling of your choice, canned or homemade (See "Hamantaschen Prune Filling" and "Hamantaschen Mohn Filling") · 1 egg plus 1 tablespoon water for glaze
Make Your Own Grogger (Noisemaker) Materials: · Small, empty, clean plastic bottles; or empty, clean plastic or paper cups · Beans or large beads for filling · Fabric scraps, fancy papers, paint or other art supplies for decorating · White glue and water
· Paintbrushes
Cream the margarine and sugar until well combined. Add the eggs, vanilla, and orange zest, and mix until light and fluffy.
Directions: Fill bottle or cups with the dried beans or beads. Seal it. (For cups, you might want to use heavy tape to ensure it doesn't pop open when shaking.) Using watered down white glue as an adhesive, affix scraps of colored tissue paper, paper confetti and/or paint to the groggers to decorate them. Shake! Hamantaschen Dough (Parve) Ingredients · 2 sticks unsalted pareve margarine · 1 1/2 cups sugar · 2 large eggs · 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract · Zest of 1/4 of a large orange · 5 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in a 1-quart bowl. Add half the flour mixture to the mixing bowl, and stir until almost incorporated. Add half the orange juice and combine. Repeat with the remaining flour mixture and the remaining orange juice until a soft, smooth dough is formed. Refrigerate the dough for 15 minutes or longer before rolling out. Roll out the dough to 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured board, and cut into 2 1/2-inch circles. Place 1 scant teaspoon of filling in the center of each circle. Shape into triangles by using your thumbs to push up from the bottom of the circle and your forefingers to pull down from the top sides. Pinch the top seams of the dough well to securely enclose almost all of the filling. A little should peek through the top of the opening. Combine the remaining egg with the 1 tablespoon of water, and brush the egg wash on the tops of the hamantaschen. Bake at 350°F on parchment-lined cookie sheets for 12 minutes or until lightly golden.

ShulCloud: Temple Sinai’s New Website & Partnership Management We are happy to share with our congregation that we have migrated our Temple Management system and website to a new system called ShulCloud. We will be sending out emails in the next few days asking our partners to create a password to be able to access their accounts. How-to’s and Frequently Asked Questions Each Temple Sinai partner can login securely within our ShulCloud system to access the membership database to see their personal information. Partners have access to update their profiles, family members, email subscriptions, yahrzeits, birthdays and much more. Look at the print screens below to give you an idea of how the login and updating information is done. Partners who do not have a login will be able to register online by filling out a registration form. Temple Sinai will then be notified of the new registration and will be able to approve the request to access the system.
If a partner forgets their login information or password, no problem they can easily use the forgot your password link. ShulCloud makes it easy for our partners to login, see their information and pay their bills, see or modify their yahrzeits, RSVP for events, make donations online, access the calendar and other features within the site. We have been transitioning most of our congregational events to be online so that Temple Sinai partners can register and pay with a credit card, thus reducing billing times and costs. We understand that not every partner will feel comfortable managing their Temple Sinai accounts online, and will continue to accept their preferred method of payment (cash or checks). If you have any additional concerns or questions, please contact veronica.evelson@tsnd.org. Looking forward to better serving you, Your Temple Sinai administration team. Temple Sinai Community - B’nai Mitzvah! Hannah Leigh Silverman
Ethan Ohana
Hannah Leigh Silverman will become a Bat Mitzvah on February 11 during our 5:00 pm Shabbat Minchah.
Ethan Ohana will become a Bar Mitzvah on March 4, during our Shabbat Service. Ethan is currently a 7th grader at Aventura Charter City of Excellence School. He loves to learn and it shows in his academic achievements. Ethan plays guitar in a band and he has grown more talented each year. Over and above his academics and musical abilities, he has strong character and deeply rooted values. He is filled with kindness, an incredible sense of integrity, loyalty and love for
Hannah is a 7th grader at Highland Oaks Middle School. Her hobbies are tennis, soccer, reading, listening to music, dancing, playing with her two dogs, and hanging out with friends Mitzvah project: Hannah has always had a passion for animals. When she was four years old, her family adopted two Chihuahuas, Bella and Pearl, and they have been a huge part of her life. As part of her Bat Mitzvah, she has chosen to help the Humane Society of Broward County as part of a life-long commitment to completing acts of Mitzvot. She has asked that guests bring toys and blankets to her Bat Mitzvah to donate to the animals at the shelter. Hannah has also set up a Bat Mitzvah Campaign Fundraiser webpage: http://humanebroward.donordrive.com/campaign/HannahSilverman. Funds raised will directly benefit the thousands of animals helped by the Humane Society of Broward County.
his family and friends. This year, he did a mitzvah for the children who live within the JAFCO village. Because Ethan's aware of how fortunate he is to have his family, and live in an area where many kids are lucky enough to have every advantage, he decided to collect toys and other Chanukah gifts for kids within the JAFCO village. They have had many more challenges than most and choosing to give to them was a great choice! If it brought a smile to someone's face, or a bit of light to someone's potentially dark day, then it was a gift for Ethan too!

Hello my name is Noah Katzman and next summer will be my fifth summer spent at Camp Manitou in Oakland, Maine. Camp Manitou is a magical place and each summer after the campers leave, they host a camp called Man Ex. or Experience Camps. All of the children that attend Man Ex. have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. Obviously, a loss so significant has a profound impact on any family not to mention an emotional and financial hardship. Last summer, my grandfather passed away while I was in camp so I know first hand how it feels to lose someone you love. My bunk mates, counselors and unit leaders were amazing in providing a nurturing and safe environment when I was given this news. Losing a parent or sibling is unimaginable for me so I want to successfully raise money and awareness for this great cause. Hopefully, I will be able to raise enough money to sponsor several children and allow them to attend this life-changing week of camp. Please take 7 minutes to watch the video that explains the Man Ex. experience and hopefully you will understand just how important this act of Tzedakah (Hebrew word for charity) is. Thank you in advance for your time and any contribution you choose to give! Sincerely,
She is a 7th grader at Aventura Waterways K-8 Center. Hannah loves dance, make up, baking and animals. Her mitzvah project is creating awareness and working with Paws 4 you Rescue in Miami.
Gabriel Belfer Gabriel Belfer will become a Bat Mitzvah on March 25 during our Shabbat Service. My name is Gabriel A. Belfer, I am currently an eighth grader at ACES Charter. I was born on April 4th, 2003 in Paris, France. We moved to the United States when I was three. When we arrived to Florida, after a little more than two years in the United States, my parents realized that family was more important than a life in the West. So, the decision was made, we moved once again, back to France to live closer to our family. As time went by, France was slowly turning into a war zone right before our eyes. It was scary. There were stories of shootings, serial killers, and all other sorts of unimaginable horrors. For the better good of our family, we decided to move back to our old home in Florida in search of security and a better life. Over the years, I have developed many hobbies which include acting, reading, practicing martial arts, and my favorite being drawing.

Kosher Food Bank There are more and more people in our community in desperate need of food to fill bare pantries – and empty stomachs. That’s why they depend on Jewish Community Services (JCS) Kosher Food Bank, the largest food bank in South Florida that Jewish households observing dietary laws can turn to during times of hardship, supplying critically important food items and other daily necessities to those in need. Since 2003, the JCS Kosher Food Bank has served those struggling to put food on their table – like families with young children, Holocaust survivors and the frail elderly. Please donate kosher food and other items certified as kosher with one of the following kosher symbols: You may deposit your donations in any of the collection bins around Temple Sinai's campus.
