NOVEMBER 2019 Written by Tatiana Solodova, Division 23 Lieutenant Governor

Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Hey Division 23! We’re already a fourth of the way through the school year and school work is getting harder. Stress is building up, so I hope you all are taking care of yourselves! Western New York Fall Rally is taking place this weekend. I’m so excited to meet everyone who signed up and to get to bond with Key Clubbers from our part of the district. Additionally, we had a very successful divisional on 10/26. Thank you to all the members and officers that came. I really enjoyed meeting and talking to you all! Lastly, I just want to remind the officers that dues are due on December 1st! Make sure to turn those in so that your clubs can stay active. Also, remember to continue to turn in all missing paperwork. Officers can check what paperwork they haven’t turned in yet in the paperwork chart. That’s all I have! Feel free to contact me with anything!

Yours in Service, Tatiana Solodova Lt. Governor

Service Spotlights Brighton High School Key Club - Division 23 On October 19th, Brighton High School Key Club went apple picking at Wickham Farms as our October event. After a successful apple picking last year, we decided to go again this year. We purchased a few bags for apples and split into groups. After taking a wagon to the apple orchard, each group got to fill a bag to the brim with apples of all types. These apples were then donated to our local Brighton Food Cupboard. After, we got to spend some time at the farm, taking pictures with the pumpkins and eating donuts and apple cider. I really enjoyed getting to talk to Key Clubbers from Brighton that I haven’t talked to before, and eating yummy apples while we were picking them. Eight of our wonderful club members participated along with our club adviser, Mrs. Doyle. We all had an amazing time getting into the fall spirit while also serving the people in our community. I’m looking forward to doing this again next year! -Member Elena Solodova

Service Spotlights … Cont. Lindenhurst Key Club - Division 2 On October 28, 2019, Lindenhurst Key Club members held their first Teddy Bear Clinic at Harding Elementary School. At the clinic, club members were accompanied by Kristi Ladowski of the Stony Brook Trauma Center. Together, members and Ms. Ladowski taught kindergartners about car and helmet safety in a fun and innovative way which made the students very interested. This included using props and demonstrations provided by the Trauma Center. Such demonstrations included an egg drop where one egg was in a styrofoam “helmet” when the other egg was not. The egg with the styrofoam “helmet” was able to stay safe when the other egg was not. After the education portion of the Teddy Bear Clinic, the kindergartners were brought back to their seats with their teddy bears and got dressed up as nurses in gloves, hair caps, and a mask. Kids had to identify what happened to their teddy bears and how to help them get better. Aliya John, a member of Key Club that attended the clinic thought "The event was amazing. We were able to teach kids about how to be safe in a creative way. We also got to help the students become pretend doctors and nurses that helped their teddy bears get better from what they learned." The kids showed great enjoyment and looked so happy that the high schoolers came to visit. Lindenhurst Key Club plans to hold another Teddy Bear Clinic later in the year because of its amazing success. - Robert Hager

Governor's Project This year's governor's project is the New York Chapter of the Special Olympics. Special Olympics New York is an all inclusive athletic opportunity. Athletes with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to challenge themselves in fair and even competition. Win or lose, they develop their own character, make friends and find unknown wells of determination within themselves. Special Olympics pushes the message of inclusion, which is something that everyone can get behind. Website: https://www.specialolympics-ny.org/
