Industry makes progress in move towards net zero

The construction sector has taken a number of significant steps towards net zero according to new data.

At COP26 last year, the Construction Leadership Council launched its CO2nstruct Zero programme, with associated measures to track carbon reduction activities, and challenge the industry to improve in 9 key areas.

The first annual review of progress sets out the evidence that UK construction is playing a leading role in cutting carbon.

Alongside targeted measures, the CO2nstruct Zero network has grown rapidly, with more than 200 organisations now established as Business Champions and Partners under the programme.

This network has played a crucial role in supporting carbon reduction policy development, feeding into UK Government work on retrofit and energy security, as well as developing its own detailed plans including a route map to cut diesel usage on sites.

Construction Leadership Council Co-Chair and Construction Minister Nusrat Ghani MP said: “We have decarbonised our economy faster than any country in the G20 and remain fully

committed to supporting the construction industry in achieving its decarbonisation commitments through initiatives like Construct Zero.

“This report demonstrates the positive start our construction industry is making in the fight against climate change. I look forward to working with the CLC to accelerate progress in the years to come.”

Construction Leadership Council Deputy Co-Chair Richard Robinson said: “Last year we asked the industry to join us on a journey towards a lower carbon future, and the response has been very encouraging.

“We must now build on this momentum, pushing ahead with pace and purpose in 2023 as we continue to play a leading role in getting the UK to net zero.”

Mapei Ultratop Loft complements Victorian house

Surface design specialist BaSE has completed a stunning ‘trowel effect’ floor installation using Mapei’s Ultratop Loft. During the installation, Ultratop Loft was trowel applied under the existing units and around the cabinet legs; it was applied with a Nuvolato (cloudy) texture in a warm grey called Venezia. The micro-cement based finish replaced a seamless resin floor which had faded in sunlight. A rapid-drying, micro-cement based system, Mapei Ultratop Loft is built up in layers made up of special primers, cementitious layers and hard wearing sealers.

The two cementitious layerscoarse grained Loft F and finer grained Loft W – are mixed with water and colourings to create a trowelable cementitious paste which is then applied in layers up to 2mm thick.

Sealing the energy crisis this winter

Effective insulation and sealing of windows and doors is a priority this winter, says Andy Swift, sales and operations manager for foam sealants specialist, ISO Chemie

He says it’s not just the frames themselves that need attention when it comes to keeping out the cold this winter - it’s the entire installation which has to be addressed.

“With 25% of the heat leaking from around windows it’s now even more important to effectively seal around the window to wall gap,” Andy Swift says.

“Even before the current energy crisis, it was always an area requiring urgent attention but now it has become paramount because millions of people are struggling to heat their homes and stay warm this coming winter.”

Hamworthy Heating introduce new Tyneham Heat Pump Technology

Hamworthy Heating has launched its first ever monobloc air source heat pump range, the Tyneham, designed to meet UK efficiency requirements in commercial applications.

In line with the latest uplift of Building Regulations’ ‘Conservation of fuel and power: Approved Document L’, which state that non-domestic buildings should be moving to low-carbon heat sources, the launch of the new Tyneham Heat Pump range plays a key role in decarbonisation.

The new Tyneham heat pump range from Hamworthy offers superb operational reliability, excellent quality, and outstanding performance. One of the smallest commercial heat pumps on the market, the new product features a co-efficiency of performance (COP) rating of up to 4.85, to provide efficient, low carbon heating.

Intratone Boost building security with Intratone’s wireless SC-03 intercom

For housing professionals, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of tenants is non-negotiable.

Fitting the latest access control technology, such as Intratone’s wireless SC-03 intercom, is a simple way for housing professionals to proactively prioritise building security, while also streamlining their own workflows.

As a wireless system, not only is the SC-03 easy to install, but residents can control door access via their own preferred digital device or landline.

This is thanks to the benefits of GSM (or the ‘Global System for Mobile Communication’) cellular technology, which connects users wirelessly across an unlimited network.

Handily, the SC-03 also has an integrated pinhole camera, which enables tenants to see who is at the door before answering.

Housing professionals can rest assured that the SC-03 intercom is durable too; its vandal-resistant screen means that it stands the test of time.

The SC-03 also has a secure remote online management system, making it easier for housing managers to keep track of entries to the property.

All resident information can be updated remotely, while any lost key fobs can be deleted from the intercom’s memory and are copy protected.

ROOFING, EXTERNAL WALLS & INSULATION

Filon Products Ltd

Heritage

Valley Trough

provides mitred finish for plain tile & slate roof

valleys

Designed for use with plain tile and slate roofs, the Heritage Valley combines the proven benefits of GRP construction, with the classic, heritage aesthetic of a close mitred valley – previously only attainable with lead soakers.

GRP is much lighter than lead, completely nontoxic and because it has no scrap value, it’s not subject to any risk of theft. In addition to these advantages, the Heritage Valley also brings significant cost savings when compared to lead. Firstly, the material cost of GRP is lower, resulting

T: 01543 687300

E: sales@filon.co.uk

www.filon.co.uk

in a reduced initial outlay – and with no specialist lead working skills required, labour costs are reduced too. Further savings are delivered by the innovative design of the product itself. The unique, dry-fix ’S’ design of the Heritage Valley maintains a wide drainage channel but has a much narrower span between the tile support ledges. This design eliminates the need for costly valley roof tiles on plain tile roofs. With the short span between support ledges, the quantity of slate / tile and a half going into the valley is significantly reduced: another huge cost saving.

AIM Limited

AIM’s barriers improve airflow and fire safety

AIM Acoustic & Insulation Manufacturing’s Open State Cavity Barriers (OSCBs) allow free airflow and drainage and improve fire safety, providing a fire rating of up to two hours insulation and integrity in suitably supporting structures. AIM’s OSCBs, when installed behind a façade system, allow the ventilation that is necessary to prevent problems with condensation and allows drainage, but, in the event of a fire, heat activates an intumescent strip which expands quickly to fully close the cavity. Manufactured from high density Rockwool stone wool and faced with a higher performance intumescent strip, AIM’s range of four OSCBs provides either a 25mm or 44mm air gap and either a 60 or 120-minute rating for both integrity and insulation.

Howells Patent Glazing

Barkers benefits from Howells’ expertise

Barkers family department store in Northallerton has expanded over the years and last year embarked on a planned specialist project –to replace the rooflights in all four atriums positioned in the centre of the store above the ladies’ fashion department.

Using its HG57 medium duty self-supporting glazing bar powder coated in RAL 7024 matt, Howells designed and manufactured four roof

lights using 28mm double glazed units using toughened glass with motorised vents.

There were many challenges associated with this project, for Howells it was installing during an intense heatwave and for Barkers, it was minimising disruption to customers. The roof lights are vital to the store’s unique shopping experience, allowing natural light to flood the upper floor.

FIEGER

FIEGER is the natural specification

ENQUIRY 78

The Campus Central project is one of the University of Striling’s biggest infrastructure investments since its inception. The project involved the refurbishment of the existing Atrium as well as the construction of a new three-storey building. Natural ventilation, using double-glazed louvres to complement the natural lighting effect, was seen as a sustainable approach to maintaining a comfortable environment. The design, by Page Park Architects, specified FIEGER FLW 32 glass louvre vents to provide both general ventilation and emergency smoke control. Working closely with the façade contractor, Marshall Brown Ltd, a total of 17 no. FIEGER FLW 32_17 SmoTec louvre windows were supplied, each comprising Guardian SunGuard SN 70/35 solar control double-glazing.

Amtico

Amtico adds virus protection

Amtico has introduced an enhanced antimicrobial additive, which has been added to selected LVT collections to protect against bacteria and reduce the presence of viruses.

Amtico’s Signature, Spacia, 36+, Form and Marine collections feature the embedded antimicrobials, which have been independently verified (ISO 21702) against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Planks and tiles containing the additive have been shown to reduce the presence of the

virus on a surface by more than 99.9% against the initial inoculation after 24 hours.

The enhanced technology makes LVT well-suited to demanding commercial spaces where cleanliness and hygiene are vital, such as healthcare, education and hospitality. The ionic silver antimicrobial additive has already been tested and proven to reduce the presence of bacteria, such as MRSA and E. coli, throughout the usable lifetime of the floor.

Junckers

Junckers launches new RIBA-approved CDP

Junckers has launched a new RIBA approved CPD, Specifying Sustainable Flooring. The presentation provides candidates with a good understanding of the role solid hardwood flooring can play in sustainable building design and how specifying the correct wooden floor, a carbon neutral material, can produce a measurable reduction in global warming.

The CPD also covers the use of sustainable flooring in net zero carbon builds, shows how a product with a long life cycle has a positive impact on the environment, how wood keeps CO2 out of the atmosphere and contributes a healthy indoor climate. The Specifying Sustainable Flooring CPD is available in person, as a webinar or on-demand.
