LGA warns COVID-19 has devastated council park services
As well as income generators, the pandemic has resulted in the temporary cessation of volunteering and the loss of in-kind volunteer contribution to parks services ranging from £12,000 to £1.56 million across the case studies.
With the Government investing £2 billion in active travel, it is crucial that parks and green spaces are fully connected to these plans to maximise their potential to encourage physical activity and improving mental wellbeing.
said: “Parks have always been an important part of our communities, but the COVID19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions highlighted how essential they are in maintaining our physical and mental wellbeing.
Parks proved to be a lifeline for local communities during the COVID-19 crisis but the pandemic has had a devastating impact on councils’ park services, the Local Government Association has warned.
A series of case studies, cofunded by the LGA and the National Lottery Heritage Fund, shows that as much as 87 per
cent of external parks and green spaces income is forecast to be lost due to the coronavirus.
Although almost all parks were able to remain open during the first lockdown, key sources of external income were forced to close, and many have been unable to return to their normal operations, including cafes, sports pitches and visitor attractions.
Despite many facilities reopening, it is anticipated that there will be a continued loss of income due to the need to employ more staff or reduce visitor numbers in order to comply with social distancing guidelines, and many council parks services have incurred additional operating costs relating to signage, Personal Protective Equipment and enhanced cleaning.
Husqvarna aiming to transform commercial turf care
Husqvarna is launching what it calls a game changing robotic solution for commercial turf care management.
The new Husqvarna CEORA platform is a revolutionary autonomous turf care solution for grass areas of up to 50,000m2
The high performing, low noise and zero emission Husqvarna CEORA mows autonomously and systematically within virtual boundaries.
With Husqvarna CEORA, public and commercial landowners, sports field managers and golf course owners can automate lawnmowing, allowing staff to be redeployed to focus on more value adding tasks.
Utilising
Parks can play a key role in the national COVID-19 recovery and that is why the LGA is calling on the Government to confirm that they are included in the new Levelling Up and UK Shared Prosperity Funds, to enable councils to invest in new parks facilities, pitches and green spaces to reduce obesity; ensure a healthier, more active nation; and reduce our carbon footprint.
“It is easy to forget that parks are more than green space and contain a wealth of income generators, many of which have been impacted by the coronavirus and will continue to feel the effects for years to come.
“The list of benefits, not just to people but wildlife, fauna and air quality, cannot be overstated. It is crucial that the Government ensures our beautiful parks receive investment for preservation and enhancement.”
Fields in Trust and parkrun celebrate parks
Green space charity Fields in Trust is collaborating with parkrun to celebrate the wellbeing benefits that the UKs parks and green spaces have delivered during the coronavirus crisis.
The joint campaign invites park users to share stories of how important green spaces have been as places to exercise, relax, reflect and as a safe place to meet loved ones and connect with our friends and our neighbours.
The #notjust campaign identifies the different ways communities engage with outdoor spaces. A local green
space is #notjust a park, it has so many more intangible benefits, emotions and memories that contribute to our physical health, mental wellbeing and community contacts.
Park users are invited to celebrate their local green spaces by recording video clips or taking photographs celebrating what their local park means to them and their families and sharing the stories on the campaign website www.fieldsintrust.org/notjust and social media using the #notjust hashtag.

We round off a remarkable year with some sobering news from the Local Government Association which should become the focus for industry-wide campaigning in 2021.
In what has been a year none of us will ever forget, the LGA and National Lottery Heritage Fund have shone a spotlight on just how much the pandemic has hit councils’ parks services during 2020. This area of council budgets has been under severe pressure for too many years, but the impact of Covid-19 has been significant. Despite the important role parks and green spaces have played during 2020 and will continue to play in the next 12 months, councils have been forced into more difficult choices as regards investment and funding.
In order for these vitally important community assets to survive, the industry as a whole must unite in 2021 to push Government to safeguard the long-term future of parks. As the Green Flag Awards once again proved this year, we have some world class sites that are worthy of the highest accolades. So where is the Government-level support?
There are always difficult and impossible funding choices to be made and the pandemic has made those decisions even harder. Yet the Government must start putting its money where its mouth is and start to support parks and green spaces with adequate funding and not worthless platitudes. We know all the reasons why parks and green spaces are so important, what we do not know is why there is insufficient financial support for them.
It has been a year like no other. But our industry has remained resilient and positive and once again come together to support each other throughout 2020 and into 2021. We hope we will get to meet again in person as soon as its safe to do so, in the meantime we will continue to showcase our world-leading industry.
So, from everyone at TSP Media and the Landscape & Amenity Product Update team, we wish you a very happy and healthy Christmas and New Year and look forward to working with you all again in 2021.

Landscape Institute announces 2020’s award-winning projects
This has been a diffi cult year, but it hasn’t changed the fact that the climate and biodiversity crises are the biggest challenges of our lifetime.
And with the importance of public green spaces highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the transformative power of landscape is at the forefront of public thought and policy like never before.
People from around the world have tuned in to the Landscape Institute’s first ever online Annual Awards ceremony
No stranger to the small screen, presenter Julia Bradbury welcomed attendees: setting the scene for a unique virtual
afternoon by discussing the delicate balance between people, place and nature and the crucial need to create habitats in which all flourish.
“As a nation, and globally too, we’ve realised the value of the outdoors,” said Julia. “But there’s a lot of us out there for the planet to support – so we need to use space effectively and efficiently.”
The 21 winning projects and entries celebrated over the course of the afternoon demonstrated the myriad ways in which landscape does just that.
“It’s been another record year for Awards entries, all of such an exceptional standard
Winter Survival Package of £300m for major spectator sports
– especially in our new categories,” said LI President Jane Findlay, broadcasting from the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield.
“The pandemic has really highlighted the vital role that public space, greenery and nature play in our lives.
“The judges and I saw projects that retrofi t our public green space, reimagine our public realm, transform our high streets, and make our cities more resilient to climate change with proper, in-practice sustainability – all such important tasks.”

both social and ecological benefits.
Sport England’s chief executive, Tim Hollingsworth, has welcomed the government’s announcement of a £300 million Winter Survival Package to help major spectator sports.
The injection of funding will support spectator sports impacted by coronavirus (Covid19) restrictions – from national governing bodies through to individual clubs.
The government package is providing support to, among others, rugby union, horse racing, netball, basketball and badminton, as well as the lower tiers of football’s National League.
Sport England will be distributing the funding and, in due course, will announce the criteria and how the process will work.
The fund’s designed to last until the end of the current financial year and Tim Hollingsworth hopes the money will have a positive impact on sports affected by the ban on spectators due to coronavirus restrictions.
“These are unprecedented times for our sector, and those sports and leagues that rely so heavily on spectators for their income that have been especially impacted by the pandemic,” he said.
“The role they play in their local communities is vital and this package of support from government will be hugely welcomed.
“Alongside our wider support for grassroots and community sport, Sport England is working very closely with government colleagues on the design of this fund and we look forward to playing a key role in its successful and swift delivery.”
The funding process will be overseen by a new, independent, decision-making board and supported by us, with Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Oliver Dowden, saying the government will do everything it can to help sports and club make it through the coronavirus pandemic.
“Sports clubs are the beating hearts of their communities, and this £300 million boost will help them survive this difficult winter period,” he said.
“We promised to stand by sports when we had to postpone fans returning. We are doing just that by delivering another £300m on top of the existing business support schemes.”

Mounty digs deep for British Gypsum
HTA launches Sustainability Roadmap to guide UK businesses
As a green industry, the horticulture sector can and should lead the way in sustainable business practices and efforts to reduce climate change, says the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), which has launched its industryleading guidance on how this could be achieved.
Building on the strong foundations that already exist in UK horticulture and landscaping, the HTA has worked with its members to develop its first ever Sustainability Roadmap.
This ground-breaking work identifies five key areas to place horitculture and landscaping at the forefront of sustainable business practice. Designed as framework
for collaboration, with ambitious targets for 2025, achievement against the roadmap’s goals will make a significant contribution to the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan.
HTA Chairman, James Barnes, called on the industry to embrace the ethos of the roadmap, saying: “Horticulture has an intrinsic connection to the environment - we are a community who cares about the natural world and it is in our interests to safeguard its future.
“The Prime Minister recently announced his ten-point plan for a green industrial revolution - I believe we have an essential role to play in the Government’s plan to transition to a greener economy.
Government urged to ban petrol-powered equipment
Supplied through the Lloyds Penrith dealership, British Gypsum have taken delivery of a hydrostatic drive 109hp Reform Werke Mounty 110V for their Birkshead Mine, Long Marton.
British Gypsum Electrical Engineer, Robert Burton said it became clear the Reform Werke Mounty was the only tractor that could meet all requirements for safe working in such a difficult driving environment and also comply with all current safety regulations.
“We are a ‘room and pillar’ mine with limited turning space and steep inclines and the hydrostatic
transmission and superior unique braking system offered by the Mounty 110V made it the ideal choice,” he said.
“The tractor is fitted with a Forestry frame to protect it from the roof and shoulders, a Chalwyn valve for engine safety, hydraulic trailer brakes and air trailer brakes, along with a host of safety electrical systems.
“We have it working with a bowser weighing four and a half tons, spraying water for dust suppression, plus a range of other equipment for a wide range of tasks.”
Simon Richard, agent for the Reform Werke range in the UK says that the hydrostatic drive, low centre of gravity, four wheel steering manoeuvrability and wide footprint make the Mounty 110V the ultimate workhorse for a wide range of tasks.
“This unique Mounty was specially built entirely to British Gypsum’s specification and was the result of many a consultation with ReformWerke, Clive Lawson of Lloyds and Rob Burton of British Gypsum,” he added.

Reesink pumps up range with franklin
Reesink Turfcare is the new distributor of Franklin water pumps to the UK and Ireland.
The turfcare distributor has secured a range of high-quality pumping systems for clean and dirty water in submersible and surface applications.
Robert Jackson, water division sales manager for Reesink Turfcare, which also stocks Toro irrigation control systems and sprinklers and Otterbine pond and lake aerators, says: “With the introduction of the Franklin range we’ve made the purchasing decision very easy and straightforward for customers needing a new water pump.
“The products are great quality, the cost is reasonable, there’s
something for every requirement.”
The ES, VS and EV series are suitable for pumping clean water through irrigation systems at golf clubs and sports grounds, and the EGT and EGF series provide the solution for dirty water extraction from reservoirs, streams, lakes and pits.
The ES series includes the fiveinch compact close-coupled submersible multistage pump with 50Hz for flow up to 7.5m³/h. It’s small and installation is easy as it’s not necessary to connect the pump to a control panel.
The hydraulic design of the four-inch submersible VS series enhances overall efficiency, reduces energy consumption and makes the pumping systems more cost effective.
The 50Hz deals with flow up to 24m³/h. The EV Series features multistage surface pumps with single free-flow impellers which are good for irrigation systems with a flow up to 120m³/h with the 50Hz.
Concluding the new range from Reesink are the EGT and EGF series, submersible drainage pumps for dirty water in hardworking environments.
They are also widely used for water extraction from ponds, streams or pits and for rainwater collection. They can deal with a liquid temperature of up to 35°C, a pH value of 6-11 and maximum immersion depth of 5m.

The Prime Minister’s plans for a ‘Green Industrial Revolution’ are a step in the right direction in tackling climate change, but there’s a significant element which has been overlooked – high-emission outdoor power equipment.
That’s according to Challenge 2025 – the initiative from outdoor power tool brand EGO, the business behind “The Report”, which found petrol-powered gardening equipment is capable of producing more emissions than the average car.
A key part of Boris Johnson’s 10-point plan is the phasing out of petrol and diesel vehicles, with their sale being banned from 2030. However, it isn’t just vehicle engines which produce toxic fumes.
The UK’s most popular Local Authority owned leaf blower has been proven to churn out 763,000,000,000 (7.63x1011) particles per second. To put this into perspective, using this tool for just one hour produces the same emissions as the average car would produce when driving around 370km.
Emma Gayler of Challenge 2025 said: “We know that battery power is going to be vital in reducing the UK’s environmental impact, which is why we welcome the ban on the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles. But we need to remember that it isn’t just cars that are powered by inefficient and highly damaging engines – tens of thousands of gardening tools are too, and their collective impact on the environment is significant.
“As a sector which contributes around £24 billion to the UK’s GDP and supports over half a million jobs, we must demonstrate how we offer real opportunities for green employment and a more sustainable economy as the UK recovers from the impact of Covid.”
“Additionally, replacing these tools is much more affordable than purchasing a new car, making it easier for people to make an impactful change straight away.”
The Report has been produced by EGO as part of its Challenge 2025 initiative – one which aims to encourage users of petrolpowered gardening equipment to consider battery-powered alternatives in order to reduce their environmental impact.

Cordless tools set contractors free
when you are working in varied locations tackling nettles, grass and light scrub around obstacles.”
Having operated plenty of petrol brushcutters over the years, the immediate benefits of quiet operation and reduced vibration were not lost on him.
Battery power is becoming established as a highly practical solution for handheld equipment and STIHL has pioneered its use in a wide range of groundcare tools. One of the most versatile is the KombiSystem which uses single motor to power multiple interchangeable tools.
We asked John Gardner of contractors Mill Farm Ashorne to trial a couple of the newer tools, aimed at vegetation control and surface maintenance. The company is no stranger to vegetation control – it operates Spearhead’s 9m flagship reach arms for customers such as National Grid! But smaller equipment is also very much part of the armoury, especially for maintaining the business premises.
The KMA 130 R cordless KombiEngine uses STIHL’s AP batteries connected via a battery belt or for more power-hungry tasks or longer use, the AR backpack battery.
“The AR battery is charged via a dummy battery unit slotted into the AP’s charger, which is very convenient as you only need one charger for both systems,” explains John. “With the implements in use, we found it hard to make a dent in charge levels, so there’s plenty of power for longer tasks.”
John was also impressed with the AR backpack. “It looks cumbersome, but once it’s on, the comfortable, well-padded harness means you hardly know it’s there.”
There’s also shoulder strap to help balance the weight of the implement. When using the AP battery, this slots into a pocket on a wide, also well-padded belt harness which has its own power cable connection to the combi engine; John initially found plugging in a little stiff, but this improved with use.
Alternatively, the AP battery can be accommodated in a pocket on the backpack harness, so once an operator has adjusted it to fit him, he can interchange it with both types of battery depending on the tool and duration of the task without having to constantly swap or alter harnesses.
Fitting KombiTools simply means slotting their shaft onto the engine, but it’s important to ensure that the drive is fully engaged by checking the shaft is far enough along, using the guide arrow.
The KB-KM bristle brush attachment is designed for sweeping paths and patios –offering a bit more muscle than a broom for areas where a mechanical brush won’t fit. It offers a working width of 60cm on the 25cm diameter brush; weighing in at 6.4kg.
“It feels quite heavy on the end of the KombiEngine but did a good job sweeping up loose debris,” comments John. “It also cleared out a join between two concrete areas effectively, so I would think it would be good for paths and patios with gaps in between the paving. It won’t lift compacted mud or remove weeds from between slabs – you’d need a different sweeping action.”
He also tried the RG-KM blade designed for low-spin removal of weeds and grass from a range of surfaces. The circular, toothed blade weighs in at 2.5kg, with 10x5mm teeth.
“Because of the slow speed we found that we could tackle grass and weeds in more challenging areas such as around fence posts, which can’t be trimmed with a standard line or blade,” John comments. “We did however, find it difficult to angle the blade correctly to work on hard surfaces, especially with a taller operator. But it’s a highly useful trimmer
“The difference in comfort and practicality are considerable – you can communicate with other operators, and on difficult worksites such as banks, there’s less fatigue. I can see the Kombi system being very useful for contractors needing to use a range of tools for different jobs.”
The Kombi engine and tools all came with clear instruction manuals, which can also be downloaded directly from the STIHL website, handy for consultation on a phone or tablet when out in the field.
STIHL
Main features and benefits:
1. Low noise and reduced vibration are among the benefits of cordless tools, cutting fatigue for more challenging tasks.
2&3.STIHL’s KombiSystem offers easy coupling to the battery systems…. and quick swaps between tools by switching the shaft.
4. A 60cm working width powered brush offers effective clear up on paved and other hard surfaces.
5. A low-spin rotary blade clears weeds and cuts grass and brush, including in difficult areas such as around fence posts.
6. The toothed blade makes light work of scrubby growth.
7. The AP battery can be mounted in a pocket in the comfortable, well padded waist belt.
8. With a choice of backpack or belt mounted battery and a range of tools, just two of which we tested, the STIHL CombiSystem is a versatile implement. 9. The backpack is charged and powered by a ‘dummy’ battery which fits in the AP charger.
10. The well padded and comfortable backpack harness can also accommodate the AP battery.

Not all irrigation needs you to think outside the box
Reesink Turfcare is the new and exclusive distributor of two new irrigation 2-wire controllers, the SRC Ranger 4000 D and the SRC Grower 6000 D. Both deliver all the control you need for your irrigation system while keeping things simple yet effective.
Web-based for mobile, PC or standalone, these ‘boxes on a wall’ are a cost-effective, uncomplicated irrigation solution, according to Robert Jackson, water division sales manager for Reesink Turfcare, which also stocks Toro’s irrigation control systems, sprinklers and wireless technology and Otterbine pond and lake aerators: “These decoder-based 2-wire systems are straight-forward to install and use, but deliver great results,” he says.
“The Ranger has a scheduling capacity of 1-100 stations with also
10 programmes and can operate up to 12 stations simultaneously and run 10 programmes concurrently.
“It’s ideal for sports venues and training pitches where lower numbers of stations are required across a single visible area.”
The roll call of the Ranger’s benefits includes flow sensor capability including various alarm options, flow management with the stacking of up to 10 simultaneous programmes and a 14-day calendar run of odd or even days. It’s also fully ET capable with local and remote weather stations.
SRC is a global provider of irrigation system controls and Reesink Turfcare is delighted to be bringing the Ranger, which is described by the company as a ‘best-in-class’ controller, to the UK and Ireland. Robert continues:
“Less cabling means installation is straight-forward, but there’s the option to expand later if needed giving the product longevity. For customers who need less of the reporting and detailed irrigation and are looking for a relatively simple controller that does not require a PC with multiple interaction options, but instead a wall-mounted controller that offers programmes and a more on/off approach, then this is the one for you.”
The Grower meanwhile has a scheduling capacity of up to 200 stations and can operate up to 15 stations and five pumps simultaneously and run 10 programmes. It has flow sensor capability including various alarm options and can be used via a mobile or PC.

Matched precipitation irrigation with R-VAN Weatherproof your paving
Using Matched Precipitation Rate (MPR) sprinklers is a widely applied concept in residential irrigation installations.
Combining sprinklers from the same product line that have MPR means that in a given zone, water is applied proportionately at the same rate and with head to head coverage.
As long as the correct amount of water and water pressure is available, no area of turf or landscape is unintentionally left either under or overwatered irrespective of its size or shape.
By combining different types of MPR Rotary Nozzles, such as Rain Bird’s range of R-VAN
rotary adjustable full circle and strip models, irrigation contractors are able to simplify residential irrigation design and installation.
The greater challenge, however, is achieving MPRs across larger and irregular areas when different product lines have to be applied to ensure the reach and uniformity of coverage required. This is achievable through Rain Bird MPR irrigation technology.
It enables contractors to combine and match R-VAN sprays for 45 to 360 degree coverage and throw ranges from 2.4 to 7.3 metres, with 5000 Series rotors with MPR nozzles.
These effectively extend irrigation reach to up to 10.7 metres within the same zone. All sprays and rotors run on the same valve, with the same run times and they give the same precipitation rates.
The R-VAN range features nine models. As precipitation rates are matched there is no longer any need for multiple
zones and valves, that may be required with other makes of nozzle, to accomplish the same irrigation coverage.
By combining R-VAN with Rain Bird’s 5000 Series rotors, most irrigation applications for lawns and flower beds can be covered.
GeoCeramica paving tops off development
Weatherproof your paving and stay safe this winter with permeable paving solutions from UltraScape.
UltraScape perma-bed bedding mortar has been specifically designed with permeability in mind. Formulated to absorb and drain away standing water, perma-bed helps to eliminate the risk of injury associated with slipping on ice.
This innovative bedding mortar is also proven to reduce water related pavement failures as any rainwater will drain away naturally, rather than sit on top of the stone, or worse, stay within the joint, freeze, expand and then break out – allowing you to enjoy your paving for years to come.
What’s more, the free passage of water through the cured product ensures that correctly laid paving will not suffer from reflective staining emanating from the underside of the paving elements.
UltraScape perma-bed exceeds the strict requirements of BS 7533 and is proven to provide a perfect bound base for natural stone paving, cobbles, concrete paving, flags and block paving.
Pre-blended to reduce costs, increase productivity and minimise on-site mixing errors, perma-bed is resistant to freeze/ thaw weather patterns and can receive foot traffic in 12 hours and vehicular traffic in 24 hours.

Executive Hire Show reschedules to April 2021
Due to continuing uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic, and following discussions with exhibitors, supporters and partners, the Executive Hire Show organisers have taken the decision to reschedule the 15th annual hire event from its original dates in February 2021 to 28th and 29th April 2021. The show will take place at its established home at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.
The Executive Hire Show has long been a key event on the exhibition calendar and is at the heart of the UK plant and tool hire sector. Since the Show’s inaugural event back in 2007, it has grown and evolved to cater for the ever-changing demands of the Hire sector.
The organisers of the event felt that it was important to get back to business, safely, securely, and in line with strict government guidelines to the benefit of exhibitors and visitors alike and stage a Covid-safe exhibition.
Chris Moore, Executive Hire Show, publishing and events director explained the decision, said: “I have not taken this decision lightly and have consulted with event managers, hirers and many of our commercial partners and all have agreed with this prudent measure and have confirmed that they would rather the event is moved, and that stringent safety procedures are implemented, than the show is postponed to any later in the year, or indeed cancelled.
I appreciate that this decision will impact on organisations and visitors’ travel plans. However, the health, safety and wellbeing of all Executive Hire Show attendees and exhibitors has to be our number one priority and I hope people will understand why we have had to take this course of action in the face of unprecedented circumstances.”

SALTEX surveys offer encouraging feedback
The Grounds Management Association (GMA) has revealed its feedback from both the recent visitor and exhibitor surveys that influenced the decision to move SALTEX to November 2021.
Last month the GMA issued two surveys; one to every exhibitor that had signed-up to the 2020 event and one to every visitor –past and present.
The aim was to gather industry feedback which could help plan for and shape the future of SALTEX.
When asked which type of show visitors would like to attend, respondents confirmed that, despite the rise in virtual events, nothing can quite replace human interaction as an indoor show proved to be the most popular choice for both 2021 and 2022.
Preferences for 2021
• Indoor show - 86%
• Outdoor show - 27%
• Virtual show -18%
Preferences for 2022
• Indoor - 91%
• Outdoor - 33%
• Virtual - 9%
A key question in the survey asked the best time of year to attend a trade show; November was the first option – followed by October.
November - 47% October - 32%
• February - 30%
• September - 25%
Despite the pandemic it is clear that there remains an appetite for trade shows. Respondents were asked how confident they were on a scale of 0-10 (0 not likely at all, 10 extremely likely) in attending trade shows in the future. An overwhelming 73% voted 7 or above.
Commenting on the results of the survey, Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA said: “Crucially, we wanted to listen to the industry and give them an opportunity to shape a show that is totally about
them, and their needs. It also hugely supported our motivation to reschedule.
“We felt really encouraged by the research which pointed to a continuing demand for an indoor trade exhibition and it was also promising to see November as the preferred date.
summer, offering a safe and proactive environment for those operating across all sectors of the sports and grounds maintenance industry.
Visitor registration is now open, go to www.sportsandgrounds.co.uk to register and you will be kept up to date with what’s to come in July 2021!
“There was a reason that we went from an outdoor Summer show to an indoor show, and I think these survey results underline the fact that SALTEX, in its current format, works for the sector.”

Cutting through the choices
Groundsmen have a number of means of maintaining hedges, verges and embankments at their disposal, from powerful tractor and excavator mounted reach arms to nifty ride-ons. Jane Carley looks at latest designs.
Kuhn Farm Machinery has strengthened its position in the long reach hedge and verge cutter market with the launch of its first telescopic arm machine.
With a fully extended horizontal range of 7.4 metres and maximum vertical height of 8.4 metres, the Multi-Longer GII 7457 E-TPAL is designed to meet the needs of the professional operator.
It has a straight arm configuration, with the heavy duty frame and main boom constructed of high yield steel. With a 57hp hydraulic motor and 21kW aircooled radiator with double heat exchanger, this machine has a recommended annual use of up to 1,500 hours per year.
A 1.2 metre reinforced belt drive flail head is standard, with 240-degree flail head rotation. There is also the option of a 1.5 metre flail head with hydraulic roller. Control is via a four-function joystick with electric proportional control, with a range of features including ground following aided by hydropneumatic lift control.
The Multi-Longer GII 7547 E-TPAL has Kuhn’s StabiLink quick hitch axle mounting
as standard, offering increased stability as well as fast mounting/ uncoupling and is recommended for use on tractors with a minimum 120hp and 6.5 tonnes in weight.
Kuhn has also added the AgriLonger GII to its range, positioned as a compact ‘go-anywhere’ machine. The Agri-Longer GII has a straight arm format with the main boom structure welded from ultrahigh strength steel to guarantee the best flexibility-to-robustness ratio.
It is available in two models offering a horizontal reach of 4.3m or 4.8m.
In addition to the new feature of pendulum link mechanical safety, the key differences between the GII models and earlier AgriLonger machines include increased hydraulic rotor circuit power (up from 34hp to 40hp) and electric joystick control as standard.
As with earlier models, the AgriLonger GII hedge cutters have a 1.2m direct drive flail head with 220-degree flail head rotation. The cutting head, which can work directly behind the tractor wheel, has a removable wear plate and a reversible rotor that can be turned around to optimise lug wear.
The Agri-Longer GII has an oil cooling system as standard, offering
constant power and protection of all hydraulic components. The control console includes the oil-pneumatic lift float, oil temperature display and hour counter for ergonomic efficiency.
Razorback has recently introduced a new telescopic Auto-Level 680 reach mower. Featuring self-levelling Co-Pilot technology, the Razorback AutoLevel 680 has been designed to reduce operator fatigue, increase productivity and reduce cost.
Auto-Level Co-Pilot technology ensures that the main frame of the machine remains level, irrespective of the tractor angle in relation to the undulating ground. Subsequently, the requirement to make manual adjustments to account for the unevenness of the terrain is significantly reduced, making for much easier, trouble-free operation.
High-end specification for this reach mower comes as standard with the Auto-Level Co-Pilot device, electronic proportional controls and a fully independent hydraulic system with oil cooler.
It is available with both rotary and flail head options. The 1.5-metrewide rotary safety head option incorporates a SoftStart triple rotor and additional mulching blades which remain in continuous contact with vegetation during the entire 360deg cycle, resulting in a cleaner and faster cut.
For operators who prefer to use a flail head, Razorback has recently launched this option which is fitted with heavy duty forged hammer flails to make light work of dense residue and is available in 1.2m and 1.5m widths. Both head options can tackle a wide range of residue
including hedgerows and verge mowing.
McConnel has added two new 60hp Power Arms models to its 55-Series hedgecutter range. The new PA5555-60 and PA5755-60 come with reach of 5.5m and 5.7m respectively and gain an additional five horsepower increase over the standard PA5155 and PA5455 and a 55hp hydraulic system.
In addition to the step-up in reach and hydraulic horsepower, the three-point linkage mounted Power Arms also gain an integrated oil cooler for increased longevity, redesigned rear guards for easier service access and high visibility LED road lighting.
McConnel’s parallel-arm and Hyreach geometry continue to come as standard, as do seam welded C-section arms and fully bushed pivot points to reduce stress and ensure greater durability. Hydraulic Power Slew is another standard feature enabling safe, compact transport and provides operators with the flexibility to cut precisely in tight corners.
Both the new PA5555-60 and PA5755-60 are available with either cable controls or Motion control - McConnel’s popular electronic proportional control system. Cutting attachments include a selection of flailheads from 1.2m to 1.5m, rotary heads, cutterbars and sawheads. A heavy duty ditch and grip cleaner can also be specified.
The range of side arm flails from Ryetec provides high performance cutting for most compact tractors, giving large machine performance in a reach arm which can access smaller areas with ease or be used with lighter tractors on grass
tyres for minimal impact on the surrounding environment even in wet conditions.
“The recent addition of the addition of the SL420H and HP have taken the popular 3.8 metre reach machine forward with an upgrade in head drive power of 25 and 40hp for really tough grass and scrub clearance. All models now benefit from the option of proportional joystick control, which minimises space for controls in the cab and gives much reduced operator stress,” says Ryetec’s Mark Harrison.
Blaney Agri offers a number of high performance flail heads for diggers, suitable for hedge cutting and shredding dense vegetation in inaccessible areas or where ground conditions are soft.
The HDX Excavator Cutting Head features a high torque piston motor for increased power which is especially effective for modern excavators with higher operating pressures. The motor is fully enclosed by a chamber, reinforced by endo-skeletal ribs, for protection.
Building on Blaney’s Power Shredder technology, the HDX head

uses a clever caged rotor design to allow the blades to spin 360 degrees. The high speed dynamic rotor works in combination with integrated shark fin blades, resulting in material that is chopped to a finer grade. Front and rear debris deflection utilises energy-absorbing chains for increased durability and effectiveness.
An adjustable front cover provides control over the entry rate of material. Blaney has also developed an excavator cutting head which can be used with smaller diggers.
This is equipped with a special hydraulic ‘Powerbox’ which ensures the rotor is running at the right speed and protects the head hydraulic motor from any imbalances in the system and are designed for optimum manoeuvrability to allow for cutting in closer proximity to the hedge.
Blaney can manufacture these cutting heads to suit any make/ model of digger.
For lighter hedgecutting tasks where a flail head is not required, the Blaney Compact hedge cutter equipped with a fingerbar trimmer features a low friction, self-lubricating design which is easy to drive and reduces wear and associated maintenance costs.
It also offers enhanced performance even on older tractors with less oil flow. Tractor mounted flail models are available for annual maintenance, heavy duty and contractor workloads, featuring Power Shredder technology.
The 3-in-1 Power Shredder is designed to cut and shred dense vegetation such as gorse, rushes and heather, offering a multiposition action to cut in positions
from directly behind to fully offset with the ability to angle up and down. It can be used for topping and shredding and can also act as a hedgecutter for facing hedges and cutting verges and embankments.
Now part of the McConnel stable, the Twose brand has always been popular with groundsmen. The flagship 5-Series offers four different reach options from 5.7 to 6.7m, 65hp high-performance hydraulics, and a choice of advanced control systems.
Three different armsets are available: standard, telescopic – for adding or retracting up to 1.0m of extra reach on demand and Cranked Forward Reach (CFR) – enhancing comfort and visibility and reducing fatigue.
Features include a precise joystick controller with twist grip for extra functionality and intuitive touch pad. A folding armrest improves space utilisation in smaller tractor cabs. The slide mount flailhead
offers 240deg rotation and dual direction cutting.
Ride-on solutions
A 1.6 metre Ryetec front mounted flail for out-front mowing tractors replaces the more conventional rotary mower or mower with small diameter flails, which can struggle with the heavy duty work which verge mowing entails.
The AS 1040 Yak ride-on flail mower from AS-Motor Germany GmbH & Co, distributed by PSD Groundscare is designed for work in tall grass, offering high work rates, robustness in the event of unseen foreign objects and consistent cutting results.
The four-wheel drive AS 1040 Yak’s 100cm flail mowing unit is at less risk of damage than a rotary deck and also ensures operator safety.
It has balanced weight distribution – 45% on the front axle and 55% on the rear axle for traction and safe working irrespective of the terrain and is suitable for operating on slopes up to 21deg.
The Ventrac 4500 compact tractor from Price Turfcare is ideal for maintaining hedges, roadside verges and the edges of ponds and riverbanks in safety, as it is can tackle inclines of up to 30 degrees.
Norse Commercial Services (NCS) purchased a Ventrac 4500 all-
terrain compact tractor and Tough Cut deck, to help maintain the embankments and verges of the Broadland Northway.
The 19.5 km (12 mile) dual carriageway, formerly known as the Norwich Northern Distributor Road (NNDR) connects traffic from the eastern approaches to the northwest of the city.
Completed in April 2018, it has 39km of embankments, planted with 380,000 native shrubs and trees, including gorse, oak, acer and hawthorn. Areas with no tree or shrub planting have been seeded with four different mixes of wildflower seeds. It is these wildflower areas that the Ventrac and Tough Cut deck are maintaining.
Martin Adcock, Operations Manager at Norwich Norse Environmental explains: “Remote controlled mowers have productivity issues due to their limited width of cut. The Ventrac, with its 1.7 metre cutting width and maximum speed of around 16kph, looked like it could do the job.
“Our local dealer, Ernest Doe, arranged a demonstration which was brilliant; it tackled the embankments with ease and left a very acceptable finish.
“With a ground pressure of just 6 psi, it’s gentle on the newly established slopes and can be used at 30 degrees, something no other ride-on machine can achieve. We are also using it around the lagoons that take the water run-off from the road.”
The introduction of a Ventrac boom mower offers another solution for cutting back hedges, shrubs and vegetation on riverbanks.
With a 2.74 metre reach, the reciprocating cutting head features a double action 91.4cm sickle bar with an auto-levelling system, which keeps the head at the desired angle of cut for consistent operation. Its out-front mounting system improves visibility and comfort for the operator the boom folds into itself for compact storage.

Winter maintenance with Ventrac Brush-Pro keeps it clean at club
After a new synthetic pitch quickly turned fortunes around for Worksop Town Football Club, the club’s attentions soon turned to the maintenance of their new pitch.
With a tremendous amount of usage building on the pitch, Keith required a machine to keep the surface at the highest possible standard, and this led him to the SISIS Brush-Pro.
It is a very common misconception that synthetic surfaces require very little attention but just like natural turf, they require maintenance as soon as they are constructed if they are to perform to the standard expected of them. Regular and periodic upkeep is required because it ensures a safe playing environment, retains the performance characteristics as well as prolonging the longevity of the surface
The SISIS Brush-Pro is a ride-on brushing system comprising a pair of mid mounted oscillating units and three rear mounted brush units that that have been specifically designed for maintaining synthetic surfaces.
Brushing synthetic surfaces is essential to keep infill mobile, lift the pile and prevent algae accumulation, surface compaction and loss of porosity.
The Brush-Pro has been designed for maximum manoeuvrability and operator comfort with features such as an electric start, hydrostatic drive for forward/ reverse and its brush combinations - oscillating for thorough periodic work and rear mounted brushes for routine frequent work which cause less compaction than conventional drag brushes.

Head groundsman Garry Watson and his deputy John Holmes have praised the Dennis PRO 34R rotary mower for keeping several grass areas in fantastic condition at the King Edward’s School in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34” (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches and lawns producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently.
The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’
ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements.
“The PRO 34R offers a fantastic cut,” continued Garry. “It is predominately used on the rugby pitches for presentation and to also clean-up after matches.
“After about a week of having the PRO 34R, we made the decision to purchase another one – it was that good. It is absolutely fantastic for sports pitches, but we also have a large number of big lawns – which must be kept in good condition. Therefore, the second PRO 34R is all about presentation on these lawns. We use it for cutting and striping.”

The three different models are Tiltmaster C for Compact Tractors (0-15 degrees), Tiltmaster D (0-25degrees) and Tiltmaster Extreme for specialist machines (0-45 degrees). Tiltmaster, now available from as little as £39 plus VAT, is a simple and effective method of providing additional health and safety data to users of groundcare and other machinery. Biodegradable tree guards reduce environmental impact
A new range of biodegradable guards are now available, helping to reduce the environmental impact of planting new whips and improving landscape management.
WhiptecBio tree and hedge guards are made from recycled material and are 100% sustainable, biodegradable and compostable. Developed with expert arboriculturists during the past 14 years, the guards
have been successfully trialled in a range of scenarios and are now available exclusively from Agrovista Amenity.
The average lifespan of the WhiptecBio range is around 3-4 years, due to the product containing a natural additive that makes the guards biodegradable and compostable. Flat packed and easy to install, the guards are secured with a cane, negating the need for plastic ties.
An additional benefit of the product degrading naturally is there is no need to remove the guards - easing the burden on landscape management and improving workload efficiency.
WhiptecBio tree guards are manufactured by Ezee Tree and available to purchase through Agrovista Amenity.

A well-known industry face, Stephen returns to the UK after spending the last 10 years of his career in Qatar, to support the continued growth of the collections, in use at
leading golf venues and sports stadia worldwide. In Qatar, Stephen worked at a main Toro dealership and Doha Golf Club, before taking on the role of Machinery Division Manager at Nakheel Landscapes which is where, over the last three years, he worked alongside John Coleman of INFINICUT to spec machinery for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Although Stephen only joined in the middle of September, he has already utilised his many international connections to remotely establish dealers in India, Thailand and South Korea and he looks forward to supporting these, and others, with product and sales training as and when travel restrictions ease.
