Welcome
Construction growth expected to slow
Construction output is forecast to rise by 2.5% in 2022 and 1.6% in 2023. According to the latest CPA construction forecasts as strong growth in warehouses and infrastructure o sets, a slowdown in private housing and a fall in private housing repair, maintenance and improvement (rm&i) from historic high levels. The industrial sector, which covers activity on warehouses and factories, is forecast to be the fastest growing sector in the next two years. Output is forecast to rise by 15.0% in 2022 and 9.8% in 2023, as activity continues to be boosted by the strength of online retailing as well as manufacturers’ need for increased stocks given the persistence of supply chain issues over the last two years. Infrastructure, the second largest construction sector, will also be a key driver of growth with output expected to rise by 8.5% this year and 3.8% in 2023. Private housing remains cautiously optimistic as annual house price growth continues at double-digit rates and major house builders continue to stress the strength of the market. However, with the UK economy expected to contract in 2022 Q4, there remains uncertainty regarding how long housing can remain buoyant.
Private housing rm&i - the third largest construction sectorhas been a key driver of activity over the last two years due to the ‘race for space.’ Output is currently 20% higher than prepandemic but firms report that smaller, discretionary spending
on improvements activity is already falling away, albeit, from a historically high level.
CPA Economics Director Noble Francis reflected on the forecasts: “Construction activity currently on site is robust, higher than prepandemic. It is likely to remain strong near-term due to projects already signed up to, especially in the buoyant infrastructure and warehouses sub-sectors. “However, construction is not immune to the e ects of the wider economy. Over the next 12 months, the rapidly rising cost of living, the slowdown in economic growth and falls in consumer confidence and spending will undoubtedly impact on private construction investment going forward. “In addition, rising labour and materials prices are likely to mean that the industry sees the value of output previously expected but not the volume. This is particularly the case for public sector construction in the longer-term, in which government departments and local authorities are likely to find themselves hamstrung by frozen budgets and rising construction costs.”

CUPA PIZARRAS
CUPACLAD provides the natural solution for new coastal home
CUPA PIZARRAS’ CUPACLAD 101 Logic was recently installed as part of a striking new-build project, located in Aberystwyth, Wales. The natural slate cladding was chosen because it could complement the coastal surroundings as well as provide outstanding resistance to the harsh weather conditions. The site was purchased by homeowners, David and Shirley Harries who looked to extend the pre-existing bungalow but after finding significant issues with its structure, opted instead to erect a new build on the same plot. “We really wanted a home that utilised a range of materials to create a modern look as opposed to building a glass palace that could look too ostentatious in the rugged seafront location,” said David.

Marley Alutec
Evolve Box range provides striking solution
Marley Alutec was recently specified by the architectural practice, Robinson Clark Ltd, to supply aluminium guttering downpipes, soffit and fascia, for a new church hall in Tweentown, Cheddar. The bold aesthetic and durable qualities of the aluminium system met the criteria for a striking guttering system that would be integral to the overall exterior design. Aluminium’s durability is largely due to the thin layer of oxide it develops, which prevents further oxidation. If damaged, the layer repairs itself. In this way, corrosion is avoided, and ongoing maintenance is minimised. This also means that there are ecological benefits to using aluminium, with environmentally negative restoration processes being avoided. The colour chosen was anthracite grey (RAL 7016).

CMS Danskin Acoustics
Acoustic scheme for historic Standon Hall
Acoustic insulation experts CMS Danskin Acoustics have worked with historic Standon Hall to specify and supply a range of acoustic products to reduce the impact of airborne and impact sound transmission in the Grade II* listed Staffordshire venue.
CMS Danskin Acoustic’s in-house technical team conducted a site assessment in order to specify an insulation strategy to address structure borne noise and absorb sound. The resulting acoustics strategy from CMS Danskin Acoustics involved the installation of 600 square metres of Smartspan floor panels, Karma TNF70 high density stone-fibre batt and REGUPOL acoustic isolation strip. Challenges included the need to specify high performance acoustic materials of a thickness that would not increase bedroom and bathroom floor levels.

Garador launches new and improved Gararoll, with Durabelt Technology
Garador has developed an innovative new roller door concept that will lift its range of GaraRoll roller doors into an exciting new era. Roller doors are one of the most popular designs for modern garages, but over time a build-up of dust and dirt on the surface of the door can cause abrasion on the paintwork which can lead to scratches and unsightly markings. To combat this problem, Garador has developed the DuraBelt, a unique anti-scratch system based round microcellular polyurethane elastomer which provides a protective layer between each lath as it rolls up. The whole system has been developed exclusively for Garador’s GaraRoll roller doors to reduce scratches and prolong the life of the door curtain. It is now supplied as standard on all of Garador’s GaraRoll roller doors in the full range of colour options.

VORTICE has always prided itself on being renowned as the ‘air experts’ and is passionate about wanting to offer its customers not only the best ventilation solution, but also the best service and after care package.
VORTICE Area Business Manager Darren Clare did just this with Podium Plumbing to help achieve a great heat recovery installation this year.
Harry from Suffolk-based Podium Plumbing, was looking to install a heat recovery system on his self-build project, but also wanted to understand more about the unit’s commissioning and maintenance.
He, along with others, attended the VORTICE BPEC course run by the VORTICE technical team and Darren Clare at its Burton upon Trent Offices. The Vort Avel 350 had been chosen for the project due to the high heat exchange rate and full filtration of the unit.
Darren commented “Harry at Podium was really keen to start using heat recovery units, not just on his own house, but also on future projects for clients. He felt it was important that he was as knowledgeable as possible first, so the BPEC course was the ideal initial step for him.
"We then worked alongside Podium in the design, installation and commissioning of the project.
"Harry and the other attendees said the results were terrific and they have already specified and used VORTICE heat recovery units on other builds.”

SOPREMA
Rethinking copper as a low maintenance alternative
Copper has been a versatile and prestigious building material for centuries, it ticks lots of boxes for both aesthetics and practicality. But amongst its many advantages, there are some significant issues with specifying copper as a construction material in any sizeable quantity. Whatever the design ambition or refurbishment requirement, a synthetic copper membrane can be used to offer all the aesthetic advantages of copper, combined with the versatility of a flexible, durable waterproof membrane. There will always be a place for traditional construction materials but, as the supply chain steps up to provide alternatives, there is an opportunity for specifiers to achieve the wow factor they’re looking for at reduced cost, risk and maintenance.

New Score & Snap tile backer board
A new, lightweight, ‘score & snap’ tile backer board has been launched by construction materials supplier Euroform. Named ‘Easyboard®’, the fibre cement board is designed for use in areas of high moisture, such as kitchens and bathrooms, and has secured an A1 non-combustible rating. Easyboard®'s ‘score & snap’ nature is an innovative development for a tile backer board – it is scored easily with a traditional utility knife and snapped to size without the use of specialist cutting equipment. In addition, its relative lightweight (approx. 13 Kg per 800mm x 1200mm sheet) means that it can be lifted and fitted by a single installer or DIY user. Easyboard® has been classified A1 “non-combustible” according to (BS) EN 13501-1.
