PYRAN® S

For fire resistance and protection of people and property

Now available for UK manufacture

Multifunctionality in fire protection

PYRAN® S is a pre-stressed, monolithic borosilicate single pane safety glass in accordance with EN 13024-1.

As a component in fire-resistant glazing that meets the requirements of resistance classes E 30, E 60, E 90 and E 120, it has proven its outstanding optical and mechanical characteristics over the years in a wide variety of buildings.

Areas of application

PYRAN® has been internationally approved and ideally suited for:

• Facades

• Partition walls

• Skylights and rooflights

• Doors

• Roofs

• Smoke screens

• lift door glazing

• lift shaft glazing

Facts

• Higher ability to withstand temperature differentials: In comparison to soda-lime glass, tempered borosilicate glass can better withstand temperature differentials and can therefore be glazed with normal edge covers (20±2 mm).

• Higher softening temperature: Because the glass is selfsupporting for more than 30 minutes, large panes and simple frame constructions are now possible.

• Higher viscosity: The glass flow rate is low due to the high viscosity and durability of borosilicate glass, so with more edge cover, greater fire resistance times in excess of 90 minutes can be achieved.

• NiS crystals do not form: Due to the chemical composition of borosilicate glass, nickel sulphide crystals cannot form. Spontaneous glass fracture due to embedded NiS crystals cannot happen with PYRAN®.

Welcome

The Construction Products Association’s latest State of Trade Survey showed early signs of recovery for the construction product manufacturing sector in the second quarter of 2024.

Both heavy side and light side firms reported a quarterly increase in product sales volumes, although concerns remain over the near-term strength of demand and labour availability.

In 2024 Q2, a balance of 30% of heavy side manufacturers reported that sales of construction products increased, marking the fi rst quarterly growth since 2022 Q2. Alongside this, 13% of light side manufacturers reported a rise in product sales.

Despite growth over the quarter, comparisons with a year earlier remained weak, reflecting two years of flatlining GDP growth and an extended period of interest rates being held at peak resulting in a significant reduction in demand from private housing new build and repairs, maintenance and improvement (rm&i). Manufacturers’ expectations for the next 12 months were positive in Q2, with growth expected by both the heavy side and the light side. Nevertheless, the strength of demand continued to register as a concern, whilst a recordhigh proportion of manufacturers flagged up concern over the availability of labour.

Rebecca Larkin, CPA Head of Construction Research said: “After an extended period of declining sales, particularly on the heavy side, encouragingly we are now seeing the green shoots of recovery. For the heavy side this was the first quarterly growth recorded in two years and given this context, it is perhaps not surprising that sales volumes were still reported lower when comparing to a year earlier given the longer-running weakness experienced by product manufacturers feeding into a slower residential construction sector.

“Whilst cuts in interest rates are expected to be the catalyst for a recovery in the two largest sectors of construction, private housing and private housing rm&i, manufacturers continue to highlight both demand-side and supply-side challenges. In common with construction, one of the industry’s biggest longer-term issues will be attracting and retaining workers.”

Performance for the future in historic roof Proctor Air®, the roofing membrane for the future developed by A. Proctor Group, is being installed as part of the renovation of Manchester Town Hall. Once construction work on the historic building, which is nearly 150-years old , is complete it will benefit from Proctor Air’s combination of vapour permeability and air permeability. The project architects specified Proctor Air, with Mac Roofing & Contracting Ltd carrying out installation. As an historic building, the Manchester Town Hall roof features many intricate details. A key advantage of Proctor Air, as an air permeable lowresistance (APLR) membrane, is that it removes the need for separate roof ventilation. In fact, it provides a more uniform flow of air in the roof space than normal vents.

Interpon helps architects to deliver a cool answer to unwanted heat

AkzoNobel Powder Coatings has launched Interpon D2525 Low Solar Absorption, a powder coating that enables architects to imagine and deliver projects that create better and more sustainable environments by tackling the unwanted build-up of heat from the sun’s rays.

Whereas most traditional coatings absorb heat, Interpon’s D2525 Low Solar Absorption technology addresses the challenge of global warming and increased urbanization, as well as the need to reduce the carbon footprint of buildings in warm cities.

Interpon D2525 Low Solar Absorption contains a special pigment that helps reflect a large part of the Near Infrared Radiation (NIR), which makes up over 50% of the total irradiated solar energy, from any aluminum substrate that it coats.

Measured against Total Solar Reflectance (TSR - the measurement for the reflective performance of a coated surface), the Interpon D2525 Low Solar Absorption achieves an exceptional value of up to 65%.

This has a dual effect: it reduces the thermal stress on the coated surface, thereby increasing the lifetime of the coated parts and contributing to the sustainability of the project; and it prevents the unwanted build-up of heat being deflected from the coated surface into a building that creates so-called ‘urban heat islands’ that are particularly noticeable in more densely packed built environments.

It is recommended for any new construction or renovated building envelope.

Hunter Douglas Architectural

Hunter Douglas aids sustainability at Crematorium

The first crematorium to be built in Central Bedfordshire had sustainability at the heart of its design – and Hunter Douglas played a key role.

Oakfield Gardens in Steppingley, near Flitwick, was commissioned by Central Bedfordshire Council. Designed by DT Architects Ltd and constructed by SMD Ltd, the 120-capacity crematorium sits in tranquil landscaping and wildflower gardens. It opened in May 2024 and it has stayed true to its ambition of being created with sustainability in mind and to improve biodiversity.

Hunter Douglas, the global architectural products company, complemented the building’s environmentally friendly solar panels by providing solid wood ceilings for the interior and exterior.

An eco-conscious choice and durable, wood is the only building material that is 100% CO2 neutral and totally recyclable.

Devin Johnson, Specification Manager of Hunter Douglas, said the company was asked to supply a solid wood ceiling and cladding for exterior of the new facility, as well as a solid wood wall grill ceiling for the spacious and airy chapel.

It was specified to supply 246m2 of European Oak linear for the external soffits and walls and Accoya solid wood for the façades at the main entrance and tower. The solid wood panels are FSC certified and are fire treated to B-s1-d0 and B-s2-d0. Supplied as 94mm wide and 15mm high panels, they were installed on an SLR carrier with a 20mm gap, which included an ultra fibre black tissue to conceal the joints.

For the chapel, Hunter Douglas supplied 143m2 FSC-certified European Oak solid wood grill ceiling. The 90mm high by 20mm thick panels are fire treated to B-s2-d0 and were installed with random gap spacing for an elegant finish.

The advantage of using Hunter Douglas solid wood wall and ceiling products is that they are made to measure, which means no cutting adjustments are required at site. This reduces significantly the installation time and cost. Any design is possible as the panel and gap size is fully customisable.

Hunter Douglas wood ceilings offer an unrivalled range of finishes and natural tones that promise to make any project stand out. Focusing on quality throughout the production process, it delivers a superior and durable product.

Nevill Long Interior Systems

Knauf Corridor 400 - A sound solution

Knauf Corridor 400, supplied by the UK’s longest established distributor brand Nevill Long Interior Systems, is a highly functional, demountable ceiling system with market leading benefits compared to traditional T-Grid systems.

The self-supporting, acoustic system is formed of gypsum ceiling tiles and designed for buildings with long lengths of corridors such as schools, hospitals, hotels and high-rise apartments or those impacted by restricted ceiling widths.

The versatile system achieves Class B and Class C Sound Absorbency without any insulation and benefits from Knauf’s innovative air-purifying technology Cleaneo. The tiles can withstand load bearings of up to 3kg per plank, are highly durable - lasting 50 years or more - and 100% recyclable.

Corridor 400 is available in three sizes, four choices of perforation types and a plain option. The tiles are painted white so there is no need to decorate once installed, however they can be painted a different colour without impacting acoustic performance.

The different shapes, sizes and patterns of perforations within the tile will vary the amount of absorption and diffusion, helping specifiers and specialist interiors contractors match acoustics and aesthetics against project requirements.

Contractors can also expect ease and speed of installation and ultimate accessibility to services. Corridor 400 is up to three times faster to install than traditional T-Grid systems as it doesn’t require main runners, cross tees or suspension hangers, and its simplicity ensures easy access to service areas above the tiles.

Playrite

Tennis Centre resurfaces with Playrite’s Clayrite MF

The Westwood Campus Tennis Centre at the University of Warwick has resurfaced four outdoor artificial clay courts with the ITFapproved Playrite Clayrite MF.

The key objectives were to provide better protection for users, ensure all-year-round access, and accommodate both tennis and padel. The Clayrite MF surface is designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, providing a natural clay-like appearance that enhances the aesthetic appeal of the Tennis

Centre. Additionally, the surface supports the university’s sustainability initiatives by being durable and requiring less maintenance compared to natural clay courts.

The installation is expected to significantly benefit both the university and the wider community by providing a high-quality, reliable playing surface that can be used yearround. This enhances the tennis program and encourages greater participation from both students and local community members.
