Welcome The Construction Products Association (CPA) has submitted its representation for the Autumn Budget 2023.
key infrastructure projects, retrofitting and new housing.
In the letter to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, CPA chief executive Peter Caplehorn offers some possible measures with both construction and manufacturing in mind.
“We also invite Government to speak to the CPA to understand some of the key challenges manufacturers face on the ground, whether it’s finding the right skills for the future or maintaining their international competitiveness.
Approximately 75% of all construction products used in the UK are manufactured here, reflecting an industry that underpins nearly every construction project in the country, large and small. Construction product manufacturing accounts for 10% of total UK manufacturing and a third of all UK construction turnover – a £62 billion industry of 24,000 companies employing 383,000 people, mainly across the Midlands and North. In the letter, Mr Caplehorn focuses on key areas the CPA believes the Government must prioritse now. These include: housing new build & repair, maintenance and improvement; infrastructure delivery; and investment, performance and UK competitiveness. He writes: “The Construction Products Association urges Government to partner and collaborate with industry on all these policy areas. “Within the CPA’s membership is vital expertise, available to Government, which will be vital to successful delivery of

Product Highlights
“A long-term commitment from Government to its main policy priorities will provide our members with the certainty to invest and support delivery. I hope that you will find these proposals and potential solutions to be useful and would welcome the opportunity to discuss these with you or your colleagues in further detail.” The CPA forecasts that the construction industry is expected to experience an acute recession this year driven by doubledigit falls in the two largest construction sectors: private housing new build and private housing repair, maintenance, and improvement (rm&i).

Modern factory-applied Nordic Copper surface treatments provide straightaway the natural oxidisation and patination that develops over time with copper in the external environment – and these can be used internally as well as outside. The same is true of copper alloys, including Nordic Bronze, Nordic Brass which can also be supplied pre-weathered and an innovative alloy of copper with aluminium and zinc – Nordic Royal – with a rich, golden throughcolour. Most recently, these copper surfaces and alloys have been made available with the Nordic Décor range of mechanically applied surface treatments, adding an extra dimension. These latest developments in abraded and embossed surface treatments are particularly suited to interior design, adding another level of close-up visual richness, texture and tactility.

Vista Engineering
Naylor Drainage
Vista Engineering Ltd has launched a new double drip design for its Type 4 housing tie, the VE4-275.
Naylor Drainage has introduced MetroDuct Class 1, a new twin wall polypropylene below ground cable duct that meets the changing demands of the energy distribution market. MetroDuct Class 1 meets the Energy Network Association Technical Specification 12-24 (ENATS 12-24), complies with Class 1 performance and is suitable for use with high voltage power cables used in sustainable energy networks. This includes wind power, solar power and EV distribution networks. The duct can also be used with standard high voltage electricity distribution networks. In addition to ENATS 12-24 Clause 10, MetroDuct Class 1 satisfies BS EN 61386-24 to give minimum 450 N compression strength at 75⁰C. It has also been rated IP4X in accordance with BS EN 60529.
New housing tie design unveiled
Naylor Drainage launches MetroDuct Class 1
The new shape is designed to address applications where there is no drip in the clear cavity. Historically this would have required a specific offset drip tie which, if installed the wrong way round, would mean the wall still has no drip in the clear cavity. The new VE4 has been created in such a way so that it can still be installed either way round without diminishing performance and ensuring it cannot be installed incorrectly. In addition to working in situations where there is no drip in the clear cavity the new Vista VE4 can be used in standard cavities.

CUPA PIZARRAS
Kemper System
CUPACLAD 101 Logic was recently specified by student accommodation provider Study Inn for a large-scale building at Walnut Gardens, Exeter. CUPACLAD 101 Logic, a rainscreen cladding system, was specified to help achieve this. Installation was simple. First, the insulation material was fixed to the building’s exterior using metal brackets. CUPACLAD® 101 horizontal profiles were installed followed by the 40x20cm natural slates, in a 7.65mm thickness. These were fixed horizontally using self-drilling screws, which are invisible post-application to ensure that the overall design and aesthetic is not impacted. Installation was a straightforward process, partly due to the lightweight of the system, with each natural slate weighing less than 30kg/m2. The slates were easy to cut and work around openings and features.
The popularity for PMMA liquid waterproofing solutions – (Polymethyl Methacrylate) – has grown in recent years, but the technology isn’t a new concept. Victoria Ramwell, commercial manager at cold-applied liquid waterproofing specialist, Kemper System, explains that as well as quick curing, PMMA is durable, flexible and hard wearing. The cold-applied liquid resin cures rapidly even at temperatures around 0°C or lower, and is installed wet-on-wet. This means the polyester reinforcing fleece is first saturated with liquid resin, bonding the membrane to the substrate, with the surface layer then applied onto the bonding coat whilst still wet – therefore forming a single, seamless membrane of uniform thickness. PMMA is tough and robust, and can provide a sound waterproofing solution for decades.

Keylite Roof Windows
IG Masonry Support supplied 65m of mechanically-fixed B.O.S.S.+, the ideal brick-slip soffit solution, to two blocks of buildings that form part of the ambitious £500m Ashley Road West project in North London. IG Masonry Support’s established relationship with the client, Grangewood Brickwork Services Ltd, along with its ability to innovate brick-soffit systems to suit a range of applications, cemented the company’s selection for this high-profile project. The bespoke nature of IG Masonry Support’s solution included the supply of angled bricks within a mechanically-fixed B.O.S.S.+ system. The intricate angled cuts, designed and manufactured by IG Masonry Support as part of the B.O.S.S.+ brick-slip soffit system, were slim and triangular. The unusual pattern was necessary to adapt to the building’s unsquared shape.
Expert Trades, a construction-based marketing consultancy in the Midlands, took on its very first property renovation project and teamed up with Keylite Roof Windows. In the master bedroom of the house, where the ceiling was particularly low, the team decided to incorporate roof windows in order to invite natural daylight into the room. Four Keylite windows have been installed. As with any old building, it was important to ensure its thermal efficiency. A whole new heating system was installed, whilst other aspects of the renovation were implemented to minimise heat loss. The Keylite roof windows include an Integrated Expanding Thermal Collar as standard, which minimises any heat escaping around the windows, making the space far more thermally efficient.

Hunter Douglas Architectural Ltd
HeartFelt® modular ceiling and wall system wins over the DFB Hunter Douglas scored a win when its award-winning HeartFelt® felt ceiling system was installed in the new German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund – DFB) campus in Frankfurt am Main. The architectural firm kadawittfeldarchitektur specified HeartFelt® in the DFB offices as a modular ceiling system and in the press room as a linear wall system, totalling 1200m2 as part of the 150 million euro campus project. The grey 7596 felt panels were specified first for the ceilings of the office
areas and hallways of the academy, but after seeing the results the architect went on to select it as a wall covering in the press room. It was chosen for its key characteristics of acoustics and aesthetics. Easy to install and budget-friendly, it is made from 100% recyclable material, including the aluminium carrier system. The HeartFelt® collection now includes linear ceiling and wall systems available in round and square profiles, a baffle acoustic ceiling system, the origami ceiling system based on folding technology, the multipanel ceiling system with new panel sizes and the PareauLux climate ceiling.
