Futurebuild has unveiled a research report - Impacting the Specification Process: Insights for Manufacturers - providing key insights into the challenges and opportunities that will shape the sector’s future and offers a comprehensive look at the critical trends driving the move towards sustainability and net zero construction.
The report is based on an industry-wide online survey conducted by Futurebuild, targeting specifiers to gather insights on the key challenges and solutions influencing the transition to net zero.
With 448 responses collected, the findings highlight a strong demand for innovative, low-carbon solutions. However, they also underscore significant barriers, particularly related to cost.
Key findings show that cost is identified as a big challenge for adopting new products, with over 54% of respondents citing it as a barrier. A lack of awareness and knowledge about innovative products was also a major obstacle for specifiers. The industry is ready and excited for net zero solutions and low-carbon materials, with over 19% of respondents expressing enthusiasm for products that directly contribute to decarbonisation e orts.
Within the report, the industry calls for more regulatory support and incentives from the government.
In fact, 30.9% of respondents believe policy reforms are essential for overcoming sustainability challenges.
The move towards a circular economy was seen as crucial, with specifiers calling for national take-back schemes and circular hubs to increase the reuse and recyclability of materials.
Martin Hurn, Event Director at Futurebuild, commented: "At Futurebuild, we are dedicated to driving sustainable change by equipping the supply chain with the insights and tools to innovate. This report delivers actionable data to help manufacturers position their solutions and sustainability credentials to decision-makers.
“Collaboration and innovation are key to building a net zero future, and we thank all who contributed to shaping this important industry snapshot.”

Heavy 3 slates specified for property
Heavy 3 roof slate was used on a self-build home in Cawthorne, South Yorkshire, designed by CODA Studios to combine traditional style with modern elements. Located near a conservation area, the home features extensive glazing and a cross-gable roof finished with CUPA PIZARRAS Heavy 3 slate, complementing the local Yorkshire stone and matching a nearby bungalow. Contractor Martyn Taylor found the slate easy to install, covering 400m2. Heavy 3’s blue/black gritty texture replicates the now-unavailable Scottish Ballachulish slate. Its 7-8mm thickness withstands high winds and rain, and it is naturally chemical, UV and pollutant-resistant, backed by a 100-year warranty. The homeowner said: “I would highly recommend CUPA PIZARRAS Heavy 3 slate, as the finish of my roof is excellent. The natural slate complements the house nicely”. 52 Grosvenor Gardens, London, SW1W 0AU T: 020 3318 4455 E: uk@cupapizarras.com ENQUIRY 3

As an airtight and vapour permeable membrane, Wraptite can be positioned to the external side of the structure. This moves the airtightness barrier away from the internal services zone, simplifying detailing and reducing the number of penetrations through the membrane. At the same time, allowing the passage of moisture vapour eliminates condensation risk. It is even possible to use Wraptite as the sole membrane in a wall build-up.

FIREFLY® systems upgrade roofspace
FIREFLY®’s contracting partner, KRASI Fire Protection Limited, has successfully upgraded a Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation property by replacing a mineral wool system with FIREFLY®’s fully tested barrier systems and ancillary products. The installation, completed in April 2024, included FIREFLY® Apollo Lite™ 30:30 and Apollo Horizontal barriers, along with bespoke access hatches and Collaroll.
KRASI, a Coventry-based specialist, replaced non-compliant fire barriers to meet modern
safety standards. Their Contract Manager, Daniel Oldacre, highlighted FIREFLY® as the only manufacturer offering a fully tested hatch as part of their barrier system. The team installed 300 square meters of barriers, creating separate compartments with protected zones.
FIREFLY®’s FR 120 hatches, tested to EN 1363-1 2020 and certified by IFC, provide two hours of fire resistance. Manufactured from woven and non-woven glass, they ensure flame, smoke, and heat resistance, with easy installation using ancillary products for full certification.

Transport hub features A1 fire-resistant roof build-up
One of the most notable infrastructure projects to be completed in Northern Ireland is nearing completion with the specialist roofing contractor involved installing a PVC system across an intermediate level deck. Thornton Roofing changed this to achieve A1 fire performance by recommending A1 non-combustible Magply boards from the range of IPP Ltd., thereby complying with the province’s fire regulations and mirroring those in the rest of the UK. All of the 20mm Magply boards have come from merchant JP Corry, one of Thornton’s regular suppliers and a leading distributor for the manufacturer. Magply boards are screw fixed into the steel purlins that span the deck, with no requirement for thermal insulation in the build-up.

F. Ball raises the bar
Products from F. Ball’s System LVT range, including Stopgap 700 and Stopgap 1200 smoothing compounds and Styccobond F46 adhesive, were chosen for a premium flooring installation in a new Bromsgrove bar. Décor Design prepared subfloors over 160m², installing vinyl floorcoverings with Styccobond F46 adhesive. After overboarding the wood floor with plywood and priming both subfloors with F. Ball’s P131 primer, Stopgap 700 created a smooth finish on flexible subfloors, while Stopgap 1200 was used upstairs, requiring no priming over minimal adhesive residues. Styccobond F46’s instant grab and long open time made positioning the wood-effect vinyl planks easy. Jason Pirie, Décor Design’s director, said, “We rely on F. Ball for quality, and Styccobond F46 made installing the LVT hassle-free.”
