The UK manufacturing sector had a mixed end to 2020.

Clients bringing forward orders to beat the end of the Brexit transition period and the ongoing bounce from the re-opening of the global economy boosted inflows of new orders and pushed output higher. However, port delays and other logistical disruptions meant that supply-chain delays lengthened to one of the greatest extents in the survey’s history.

The seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index revlealed that manufacturing output rose for the seventh month running in December, albeit to a lesser extent than one month ago. Growth was registered across the consumer, intermediate and investment goods sectors.

The steepest expansion was at intermediate goods producers, while consumer goods output returned to growth following back-to-back contractions. Job cuts were made for the eleventh consecutive month. December saw new orders rise at the quickest pace since August, as intakes improved from domestic and overseas sources.

Rob Dobson, Director at IHS Markit, which compiles the survey, said the improvements reflected a boost from last-minute preparations before the end of the Brexit transition period. “Customers, especially those based in the EU, brought forward purchases, boosting sales temporarily,” he added. “It seems likely that this boost will reverse

in the opening months of 2021, making for a weak start to the year.

“Worryingly, the manufacturing sector was already beset by nearrecord supply-chain delays even prior to the closure of Dover-Calais shipping. Manufacturers reported freight delays – especially at ports – plus shortages of certain raw materials and a lack of supplier capacity. Vendor lead times, a bellwether of supply-chain pressures, lengthened in December to a similar extent to during the first wave of the pandemic.

“UK manufacturers also built-up input stocks to one of the greatest extents in the 29-year survey history in expectation of heightened logistics issues continuing during the first part of 2021. If this is the case, as expected, the disruption to deliveries and production schedules, alongside the unwinding of Brexit inventories, may place the manufacturing recovery under greater threat in the coming months.”

Air services provider dnata has opened a new £30m high bay facility at Manchester Airport to help its expanding cargo handling business in the UK. For part of the scheme, the architects specified Kalwall® translucent cladding to provide natural daylighting for the offices and gym. This building’s tall ceiling space required the 100mm self-supporting Kalwall panels to span freely across 4.8m x 2.8m apertures. While it is unusual to have such a tall span with no support, the inherent strength of Kalwall in a lightweight frame meant it could be achieved and add to the overall aesthetic appeal of the design. Furthermore, the Kalwall panels means they are achieving an impressive U-value of 0.83 W/m2K.

Marley Alutec’s Evoke helps sharpen up Tynings

After discovering Marley Alutec’s Evoke fascia, soffit and coping solution online, the project’s contractor Nick Pullen, of St Michaels Properties, also specified Marley Alutec’s square rainwater downpipes and balcony outlets - ensuring a consistent and complementary aesthetic across the entire property.

Due to the balcony outlets having a circular spigot as standard, Marley Alutec adapted each unit to have a square spigot. This enabled the connection between the outlet and downpipe to be a simple process of pushing them together, neatly concealed within the balcony’s soffit.

Magply puts in strong performance at community centre

A comprehensive refurbishment project, addressing a community centre belonging to Sevenoaks District Council, is featuring the benefits of Magply boards as the substrate for a through-coloured render system that will be exposed to rugged use, as well as the worst of the Kent weather.

The work on the Bat and Ball Community Centre in Maidstone is being led by main contractor, the BJF Group with Theis + Khan Architects responsible for the design work. Epsom based Surrey Screed & Renders Ltd., meanwhile, is the specialist sub-contractor applying a K-Rend system across the Magply

boards as well as an area of insulation panels. There is insulation over the old corrugated roof to improve energy performance, and a new single ply membrane running into internal gutters. Then a membrane was fitted across the outside of the steel framework, along with four by two (100 x 50 mm) timbers, to which the Magply boards are fixed ready for the rendering.

With the roof extending to 23m in length, the total parapet is some 160m2 in area, with another 40m2 of the 12mm Magply boards having been rendered to create a bin store at the rear of the building.

Seven-metre high wall installed in London School

Having a strong presence in the educational sector Moving Designs were specified as a flexible space consultant to provide several Moveable Walls to a School in London. The largest partition being in the Hall measuring 23 metres wide by 7 metres. The stipulation was that the panel finish would blend seamlessly into the surrounding decor. The need for good acoustics was obviously crucial to allow the school to run multiple functions simultaneously with no intrusive sound from one space to the next. Prestige Moveable Wall was more than capable of meeting and exceeding the required levels. Consideration was also given to the surrounding structures ensuring there was no sound leakage, known as “flanking transmission.”

The trade association Interpave has published edition 6 of ‘Understanding Permeable Paving and SuDS’, an essential introductory guide to all aspects of concrete block permeable paving for sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) – and much more.

Concrete block permeable paving is uniquely placed as an essential, multifunctional SuDS technique, providing an inherent drainage system with no additional land take for water storage. It combines proven engineering design with water management replicating nature near the surface. And permeable paving is also very effective at removing pollution from surface water runoff, notably vehicle pollutants, particularly harmful to our rivers.

This edition explains how to use straightforward flow controls to maximise storage and other capabilities of permeable paving, offering further cost savings. But wider benefits of concrete block permeable paving are also discussed including ‘cool pavements’ helping to reduce the urban heat island effect through evaporation. This enhances the already high albedo – or heat reflectance – offered by concrete block or flag paving generally.

One particular innovation is set to play a major role in the post-pandemic public realm. Retrofitting concrete block permeable paving as an overlay to existing streets offers a lowintervention technique to transform the public realm, in response to the raft of recent active travel, low traffic neighbourhood and open space initiatives.

responding to the proportions and colours of the existing granite frontages. It is defined by vertical, scalloped panel facades of Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper – a thoroughly contemporary design but sharing materiality with the buildings’ classical copper dome. Repairs to the dome itself were carried out using Nordic Green pre-patinated copper, complementing the existing historic patination.

The copper panels, including some perforated for transparency, were pressed and rolled to take the scalloped shape. Nordic Brown Light is part of an extensive portfolio of architectural copper surfaces and alloys from Aurubis.

Bespoke British design & engineering helps deliver flagship workspace

Teamwork and design agility has empowered delivery of a flagship office block that is already drawing international companies to the North West. Light, airy and clean, open spaces were key design objectives for the 61,500ft2 six-storey office block 2 Stockport Exchange. To fulfil that, and help achieve the Excellent target BREEAM rating, ventilation specialist Gilberts Blackpool collaborated closely with architect AEDAS and engineering consultant Hannan Associates to devise a bespoke solution for the five floors of offices, and reception. Originally a perforated diffuser was specified, but it was felt it did not reflect the perceived aesthetics. Because Gilberts is solution focussed, it had the ability and agility to cost-effectively conceive and develop an alternative. Heritage action for Acton Town Hall

The conversion of the former Acton Town Hall in West London to include residential accommodation features Crittall windows, carefully designed to preserve the building’s original character. The building, which dates from 1909, features tripartite sash windows on the ground and second floors and casement windows to the first floor. The ground and first-floor windows are set under heavy keystones and those on the first floor also have stone aprons. All the windows are set within stone surrounds. For the refurbishment and conversion works the windows within the original building were replaced with Crittall Corporate W20 profiles. Timber subframes were installed with all these new windows as a planning requirement to ensure a like-for-like replacement.

Marmox Multiboard makes ideal render backer for conversion

The redevelopment of an unusually large agricultural homestead at a farm in the Surrey commuter belt has seen the main contractor make full use of the technical benefits offered by Marmox Multiboard, in facilitating the creation of an attractive new outward appearance that will deliver low maintenance as well as improved energy performance.

The contract is creating a pair of semidetached, three-bedroom properties, finished to a high specification including greatly improved energy performance standards, where the Multiboards will contribute to bringing the exterior wall U-values up to those demanded by the current Building Regulations. Marmox offered all the technical guidance required, including comprehensive installation instructions.

A total of 154, 30mm thick, 2500 X 600mm Multiboards was supplied together with the

90mm long Marmox Dowels which ensure individual panels are held securely and that moisture cannot penetrate through the fixings.

Marmox Multiboards are manufactured from extruded polystyrene or XPS encapsulated in reinforced polymer concrete, available in a range of thicknesses up to 60mm and presenting a variety of positive physical characteristics in addition to being fully waterproof. Their very good thermal performance further helps to cut condensation risk for interior work where they are widely used in bathrooms and other high humidity areas.

F. Ball products lie at heart of community project

High performance subfloor preparation products and adhesives from F. Ball and Co. Ltd. have been used to install floorcoverings as part of a refurbishment of the 19th century Johnston School, in Kirkcudbright, into a community centre. A&H Flooring Ltd. were commissioned to install floorcoverings as part of the project. F. Ball’s Stopgap F77 waterproof surface membrane was chosen to provide a barrier to stop excess subfloor moisture attacking adhesives and floorcoverings, thereby preventing potential floor failure. To facilitate this, contractors used F. Ball’s Stopgap 1200 Pro, a high-performance, fast-setting, fast-drying levelling compound, to create a smooth base for the application of the waterproof surface membrane.
