Environment charity reveals “green space gap” as North/South divide identified

The findings correlate with the Heritage Lottery Fund’s‘State of UK Public Parks 2016’report which found the London and East Midlands were the two regions least likely to be hit by funding cuts to parks.

The analysis focused on urban regions only to exclude rural areas, which may have access to very good quality but unaccredited space such as national parks.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “The environment around us shapes our quality of life, and access to quality green space has never been more vital than it has been over the course of the pandemic, showing how much we rely on it for our wellbeing, both mental and physical. We believe everyone should have access to one.

New analysis by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy has revealed that 70% of people who live in urban areas in towns and cities across the country do not have suitable access to good quality green space. This rises to 75.8% in the most deprived areas. The findings are based on those who live within 800m (or a tenminute walk) of a Green Flag Award accredited green space –

the Government’s own standard for what constitutes a goodquality park.

The study found that in London there is a good provision of quality green space, with 62% of the urban population within walking distance of a park accredited with the Green Flag Award. However, London is far above any other region in the

UK. The region with the second highest access for its urban residents is East Midlands – with just 29%.

Cities in the North West of England in particular have little access. In the region, fewer than a quarter of those who live in urban areas (24%) have access to a Green Flag Award accredited park.

Invasive species cost UK economy over £5 billion over past 40-50 years

Research led by Queen’s University Belfast has shown that invasive species, such as the grey squirrel, European rabbit and Japanese knotweed, have cost the UK economy over £5 billion over the past 40-50 years.

This is one of the highest totals in Europe and the study is the largest and most up-to-date combination of economic costs of biological invasions in the UK, with the results published in the journal NeoBiota.

The study was first authored by Dr Ross Cuthbert, Research

Associate from the School of Biological Sciences at Queen’s University and Postdoctoral Research Fellow from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany. It involved an international team of researchers that have built the first global database of invasion costs named InvaCost, led by a team at Paris-Saclay University.

Dr Cuthbert said: “We have found the majority of costs were caused by direct damages, such as reductions in agricultural productivity and infrastructure repair costs,

whereas very little was spent on the actual management of invasive species, and especially prevention of future invasions.

“Worryingly, we also found that invasion costs are increasing rapidly over time and are likely to continue rising in future as more invasive species arrive in the UK.

“These costs are also severely underestimated, as very few of the known invasive species in the UK have reported economic costs (< 10%), indicating a lack of research effort and reporting of their detrimental impacts.”

In urban environments there is a difference between any green space and a ‘quality’ one. A certified Green Flag Award park will offer a healthy, clean, sustainable, well-maintained and safe environment for people to relax, socialise and exercise in.

The findings are particularly worrying after a year-and-ahalf of lockdowns which have meant that, for many living in urban environments, public parks represent the only green space available to them.

“It’s therefore very worrying that the vast majority of those living in urban environments do not have access to a green space that, by the Government’s own standards, can be considered of good quality.

“As such, we are calling for increased investment across the country. It is money well spent – for example in Sheffield, the Government’s own analysis showed that for every £1 spent on maintaining parks, there is a benefit of £34 in health costs saved.”

Green Flag Awards Enquiry 1

To conduct their study, the researchers examined how costs in the UK were distributed across different invasive species, environments and cost types, and how they have changed through time. They found that in the last 40-50 years, invasive species have cost the UK economy over £5

billion, with most of the cost due to invasive animals and plants, such as the European rabbit, Japanese knotweed and waterweeds, and predominantly through agricultural or property impacts.

A successful summer of sport, topped off by the record-equalling medal hall for Team GB at the delayed Tokyo Olympics, has given the industry a huge boost. Although there were not huge visitor number at either BIGGA’s Festival of Turf or the new SAGE expo last month, the very fact that both these outdoor, demonstration-led events took place at all is a significant triumph for the industry as a whole. Both were well-staged, well-managed and still attracted reasonable numbers through the main gates. Given the fact that we’ve all effectively been locked down and unable to network in our traditional ways since March 2020, both events were hugely welcome additions to the industry calendar.

With organisers of SAGE hoping to make the event an annual get-together, plus the GMA making big progress with SALTEX 2021 in November and BIGGA planning ahead for BTME 2022 next January, that light at the end of the tunnel continues to grow larger. This month we focus again on the Play & Activity sector, one that continues to fight hard for greater recognition and support from Government. With various research and reports from the likes of the API, Sport England and Local Government Association highlighting the pressing need for greater investment in community-based sports, play and activity facilities, the campaign to get the sector included as part of the national recovery efforts has intensified. It is a campaign we fully support.

Also, this month, we have special spotlights on industry favourites like Compact Tractors, Ride-On Mowers and Hedge & Verge solutions, as well as the usual mix of industry new, views and case studies. We were grateful to be able to see so many familiar faces last month at the two outdoor events and to thank them all for their continued support. If we did not get the chance to meet up, then we thank you also for your support and also the hard work and professionalism that goes into making our industry and sectors world-leading.

Etesia lands a transport goal

Designed from a clean sheet and built at the company’s headquarters in Wissembourg with the majority of components made house or sourced locally, the ET Lander electric truck was the brainchild of Etesia president Patrick Vives in 2013. The last nine years have seen €15m invested in its development, and production began in 2020.

“We were keen to get the first one into the UK pre-Brexit, but due to the Covid pandemic we were only able to introduce it to our dealer network this summer,” explains Etesia UK Managing Director Les Malin. “We plan to offer it through a select number of dealers in the UK and Ireland, and they will have access to a configurator taking the design from the chassis up through a wide range of optional extras.”

These include a choices from a half cab to fully enclosed and various carrying options. Etesia’s demonstrator is kitted out to a high standard – a model with this spec has already been ordered by a leading national groundcare contractor – with a one tonne capacity steel three-way tipping container and side lockers, plus power connection for 240v tools. Towing capacity is 750kg.

A 400 litre water container can be fitted between the cab and carrier, suitable for using with a pressure washer or for watering hanging baskets. By swapping to a shorter container, there’s room for two extra seats with lap belts. Fixed containers can also be specified and Etesia has had enquiries from third parties who wish to fit alternative bodies such as spreaders.

First impressions are that this is a bigger vehicle than it appears in photographs, and Les says that the intention was always to fill a gap in the market.

“While it has a carrying capacity of a tonne, it’s not going to compete with a pick-up truck. It’s aimed at municipal applications where operators need to be able to move around towns but also require off-road ability, to work in wet conditions or on slopes up to 30deg. We don’t feel that we are competing with anything that is already available.”

It’s a striking machine in the classic Etesia green and white livery – although custom paint finishes can be specified – and the black plastic door panels are made from recycled plastic which also adds insulation. The enclosed cab has opening windows and rear

screen; the rearview mirror will incorporate a reversing camera on production models.

The design features many clever touches – Etesia has developed side panels for the tipper body which quickly detach and slot into the tailboard as ramps for loading machinery. Touching the fob on the dashboard activates the ignition and major controls are incorporated into a membrane keyboard, including buttons to operate the optional front linkage. An LED screen shows battery charge status, forward speed and direction of travel and can be switched to navigation or system status display.

Power is supplied by lead acid batteries sourced in the Alsace, although a lithium option will be available by the end of the year.

“Lithium adds to the cost, but doubles the mileage that the ET Lander can travel between charges and weighs 400kg less, boosting the payload,” explains Les. “However, the lead acid battery can go 60 miles on a charge which is more than most municipal teams would travel in a day.”

Charging is overnight for lead acid batteries, using a 16 amp charger,

whereas the lithium alternative can be charged in 5-6 hours via a standard car charging point.

In operation the ET Lander is quiet, as you would expect, surprisingly nimble and easy to drive, with F/N/R for the CVTtype transmission selected on a steering column-mounted stalk. Top speed is 40kph and it ticks along nicely on pathways; speed can also be limited via the touchpad for public areas or steadier jobs. Electric power steering makes manoeuvring around trees a doddle and visibility is good. Even with the tall sides of the full tipper box the rearward view is more than adequate for anyone used to driving a van.

It’s also comfortable even on unmade roads or rough ground due to double wishbone and leaf spring suspension, while the cab is spacious for driver and passenger with a number of cubby holes for phones, paperwork etc.

Likely to be classed as N1 Goods for on-road use, the ET Lander can be driven on a standard car licence. With more bodies in the pipeline the range of uses is limitless – the front linkage alone adds valuable

snowploughing capability to a contractor’s armoury. Power to the lockable containers means that battery tools could be charged up on the move.

It may even be that the electric power is enough of a draw on its own, with some local authorities putting it as ‘first preference’ for contracts, although price could still be an issue. Expect to pay

£30,000-£45,000 depending on specification, but also expect to see plenty of ET Landers in parks and open spaces in the future.

As Les aptly says of Etesia: “We’re a small build company that aims to develop specialist solutions. We always think ‘what can we build that is different?’.”

Granite Sett Paving Repointing for the Peace Gardens

The paving through the Peace Gardens has been successfully refurbished for the long-term, by Sheffield City Council using GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar.

The natural stone paving was becoming loose and subject to damage due to the cracking and loss of strength problems associated with both traditional and proprietary, pre-bagged cement based jointing mortars, which had all been tried without success.

The council’s engineers found the ideal solution was GftK’s unique, epoxy resin coated, and bound sand based, vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar from

NCC Streetscape. This also enabled the repointing work to be completed without disruptive closures and without any delays due to the weather.

The installation process is also simple - the areas were high pressure water jet cleaned, any loose stone setts were replaced, and then the joints were wetslurry pointed, as GftK’s vdw 850 effectively self-compacts into the joints, with no tooling required.

Finally the stone surfaces were rinsed, dry brushed-off and within a short time reopened for public access.

UltraScape takes paving to the ‘Next Level’

Experts in driveway and garden makeovers, Next Level Landscapes Ltd were given the exciting task of transforming the outdoor space of a new build property in Bolton. The homeowners dreamed of remodelling their lawn to create a garden paradise. They wished for a modern and relaxed seating area to entertain guests around a state-ofthe-art gas fire pit.

Next Level Landscapes Ltd used UltraScape’s BS 7533 Mortar Paving System to install the beautiful smoky grey porcelain and silver picture frame paving border, both of which were supplied by Sandstone Supplies.

Comprising of pro-bed HS bulk bedding mortar, pro-prime slurry primer and flowpoint rapid set grout, UltraScape’s paving installation system is the number one choice for all domestic and commercial projects.

Pre-blended for ease of use, pro-bed HS fine bedding mortar provides the ultimate laying course for all types of paving – including the porcelain paving chosen for this project. “pro-bed HS is an amazing product not only for its strength benefits, but it’s also fast setting which helps speed up the job by allowing you to walk on the paving a lot sooner than usual” – Jordan at Next Level Landscapes Ltd.

Formulated to provide an exceptional bond between your paving elements and pro-bed HS, pro-prime slurry primer eliminates costly failures caused

by general wear and tear. Next Level Landscapes Ltd have used pro-prime a number of times and understand how important this step is when installing paving. Jordan remarked: “I love the fact that it gives me peace of mind that the paving slabs aren’t going to come loose over time.”

To complete the installation, flowpoint smooth in Charcoal was used to joint the porcelain pavers. With an initial set after just 15 minutes, and a walk on time of one hour, it is unsurprising that flowpoint has become synonymous with fast application, cost-effective and robust jointing.

On finishing the project, Jordan Clayton, Owner of Next Level Landscapes Ltd. commented: “flowpoint is our go to product when it comes to jointing all our paving. Like the rest of the materials, I love how it gives me confidence that the products will stand the test of time, allowing homeowners to enjoy their garden for years to come.”

The homeowner was over the moon with their garden makeover. With a beautifully stylish area for entertaining and relaxing, the owners are sure to be the envy of all their guests.

Choose UltraScape’s proven and certified BS 7533 Mortar Paving System for the outstanding performance and assurance that comes with a UKAS seal of approval – you can’t afford not to!

Jointing stands the test of time

A return site visit to Hitchin Market Square in Hertfordshire by www.PavingExpert.com, found the refurbished traditional granite sett paving, repointed by GftK’s vdw 850 Paving Joint Mortar in the winter of 2010, still looked like it had been recently completed.

The expert report explained that the paving had been patched and pointed, re-pointed and grouted, glued and all sorts over the years, but nothing lasted long. The local authority and consultants undertook some tests and found one promising product – GftK’s vdw 850 from NCC Streetscape.

In late 2010 the market repointing was completed on time and on budget, primarily because work could continue using GftK’s vdw 850, despite the wet weather and low temperatures throughout, which would have made any cement-based pointing doomed to failure.

After more than 10 years, the historic market is looking great and an asset to the Town, plus it will continue to be for a good few more years yet!

Jacksons Fencing’s V mesh fencing secures RAF museum

The RAF Manston History Museum was opened to commemorate the history of this famous airfield.

With priceless heritage assets on display at the site, appropriate security fencing was an essential requirement for the museum.

EuroGuard Regular fencing was specified to secure the perimeter, by the project team. This V mesh fencing system is profiled to create a rigid mesh panel that remains strong over time.

With its 200 x 45mm apertures, it provides high visibility, which simultaneously provides clear viewing of the planes on show, while allowing

surveillance of the surrounding area for security purposes.

Situated on a busy crossroad, another key consideration was that it was important the fencing still allowed drivers to have a clear view at the junction.

EuroGuard Regular wires are measured before coating to provide an accurate indication of strength. The wires have a 5mm diameter, with a zinc alloy treatment on top to provide superior protection against rust and corrosion.

The fencing for this project was polyester powder coated green to blend in with the predominant colours of the

vehicles and grassy areas around the site. A single leaf gate allows pedestrian access, and a double leaf gate was also installed for vehicles and to

ease of movement for transporting the planes.

Zaun Rapid Deploy System (RDS) family extended

Zaun RDS Original was introduced in 2012 and has since been widely used at major events throughout the UK.

It was a pioneering product providing a surface mounted, rapid deploy fence that was properly resistant to the natural elements and a malicious attack. Now, in 2021, Zaun is expanding the family with the RDS StrongHold range.

The RDS StrongHold system incorporates a patent-pending adjustable system to plumb the posts; this means that not only will the perfectly vertical posts be more pleasing to the eye, but a wider range of panel types can be mounted, including panels that must have accurately plumbed and positioned posts. The StrongHold range will work with all Zaun mesh systems: Axiom 3D mesh, Optima, Duo, 358 and ArmaWeave.

The bases for RDS StrongHold utilise legacy material from the

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Originally designed to support temporary CCTV columns, these bases were conceived to split into two smaller fencing bases.

Still, it is only now, with the launch of our patent-pending adjustment system, that they are available for sale. Utilising these bases is great up-cycling and provides a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of this product compared with virgin materials.

Housed on the inside of the perimeter to remove any form of climbing aid or tripping hazard to the attack side for the fence, these 455kg steel-clad concrete bases provide excellent overturning resistance to provide a strong and secure fence.

Each 450mm x 900mm x 800mm concrete base is fixed to the post using the unique adjustable fixing system. This allows the fence to

be installed on uneven ground, keeping the posts plumb without the necessity to chock the blocks.

358 mesh can be stepped or can be angled to follow the contour on the ground, in the latter case by overlapping the mesh to suit. Other panels, such as Axiom, cannot overlap as the V beams would interfere, so these types of panels must be stepped on the plumb post.

Available with a variety of mesh types, including 358 mesh, profile mesh and twin wire mesh.

Any chosen mesh can also be used subsequently as part of a permanent installation, without the need for new panels or may be used again and again on multiple temporary sites.

RDS StrongHold was named after Zaun ran an internal competition amongst staff. After much deliberation, RDS StrongHold was chosen from hundreds of entries and won by Kevin Lloyd, one of our experienced fabricators.

Arrow Valley Country Park is reimagined

Arrow Valley Country Park is the largest area of open space in Redditch, so when KOMPAN were asked to reimagine an old, worn play area, we jumped at the chance.

KOMPAN were awarded the contract because we proved that we could create a real `WOW’ factor within this destination park.

We included impact from height and scale from a bespoke GIANT XL Lakeside Treehouse unit, which features a 9m high tower, offering a real understanding of the local distinctiveness and country park nature of the site.

It was also vitally important that the design provided access for all abilities.

KOMPAN supported the council on achieving planning permission for the high tower structure, dealing with the challenges of Covid, the harsh winter frost period, and elements of anti-social activity too, to deliver a project on time and to the council’s budget.

The Council are thrilled with the outcome and have already expressed their wishes to work with KOMPAN again in the future with, commissions already received for two other destination parks in 2021.

This is a very exciting relationship which will really impact the lives of those living in the local communities, for the better.

The Royal Burgess GC opts for ISEKI TH5420

With over 280 years of history and curated by design greats such as ‘Old’ Tom Morris, Willie Park Jnr and James Braid, The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh continues to seek challenge and reward for its members.

GEO certified since April 2018, the parkland course, at Barnton, is only a few miles from Edinburgh’s city centre. In his 12th year as Course Manager, Chris Yeaman, and his team of seven, witness first-hand an abundance of nature, while they go about their business of achieving smooth greens, lush fairways and well cared bunkers.

This spring, Chris Yeaman had requirement for a new compact

tractor, and with the guidance of Rob Hogarth, Regional Sales Manager at local dealer, Fairways GM at Kinross, he headed straight to the Iseki TH5420.

“All our tractors are Iseki; I’ve been a fan for almost two decades. Our most recent, the TG6490, is a fine machine, but we had a gap for one to take over greens. The new Stage V compliance came into it as we are in the process of trying to extend our GEO certification for another three years, also high on our list was versatility.”

Rob Hogarth from Fairways GM said: “The TH5420 has a 40 hp Stage V compliant, 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine

that also comes with a mid PTO as standard, so it accommodates a variety of implements. The 3 speed hydrostat makes for easy control. It’s a compact and

high torque, powerful tractor, perfect for turf maintenance applications.”

Kubota launches new multifunctional LX compact tractor range

Kubota introduces its new LX Series, a range of multi-purpose compact tractors that allow users to handle a wide variety of tasks ranging from mowing and snow clearance to materials handling and cultivations.

The new LX tractor features a Stage V engine and will be available in four different models: the 35hp LX-351 Rear ROPS and LX-351 Cab, and the 40hp LX-401 Rear ROPS and LX-401 Cab, all with three-range HST transmission.

Powerful four-cylinder Kubota engines are equipped with an injection system, exhaust gas recirculation and diesel particulate filter, not only meeting the latest EU Stage V emissions standard, but also offering low fuel consumption. The large engine displacement of 1,498 cmÑ delivers high levels of torque to ensure ample power reserves.

The modern engine cowling of the new LX Series tractors has a distinctive, dynamic design giving the operator an excellent view of the front working area. It can be opened wide to allow easy access to all maintenance points in the engine compartment.

Kubota has developed a new three-range hydrostatic transmission especially for the LX Series which is extremely quiet and guarantees precise and efficient power transmission. An auto-throttle function allows the operator to synchronise driving speed and engine speed with just one pedal. This simplifies operation, reduces noise emissions and further helps to cut fuel consumption. LX Series tractors are also equipped with smooth and responsive hydraulic power steering, making it easy to use heavy implements or perform front loader work.

The new LA545 front loader is also available for the LX Series, featuring an optional self levelling system, and further expanding the range of tasks that can be carried out with these tractors.

Two double acting valves at the front and two double acting valves at the rear to handle the most demanding equipment are standard. A new multi-function lever is used to independently control the valves. Lifting capacity at the rear is up to 1,150kg, and a front hitch with front PTO is available as an option, a first for Kubota compacts in the UK, and offering even greater versatility.

An external switch at the rear that allows the PTO to be switched on and off from outside the cabin, a useful addition when operating PTO-driven implements such as log splitters, saws, cement mixers, etc. while stationary.

The Bi-Speed system significantly improves the steering performance of the LXSeries tractors and bevel gear drive further enhances its outstanding manoeuvrability; the large steering angle giving a minimum turning radius of 2.2m.

Kubota offers a completely new cabin design for the LX Series which is easier to access and noticeably quieter when working. As standard, it comes equipped with air conditioning, a heated rear window and windscreen wipers front and rear. All frequently used levers and switches are now located to the right of the operator, while less commonly used controls are located on the left, for the most user-friendly layout yet. Security is a top priority on the LX Series and the tractors are protected by a three-digit access code.

Cabin models have a width of 1.25m and the ROPS models just 1.22m, a compact design making the LX series the machine of choice for an extensive range of applications. A wide range of tyre types, including agricultural, turf and intermediate tyres is available.

The LX series will be available from Kubota dealers in September.

GPS precision pays off

Using pioneering technology fi rst introduced by John Deere on its agricultural tractors and other self-propelled equipment in 2001, the company’s versatile compact tractor range can now be equipped with a StarFire satellite receiver and AutoTrac Universal automatic steering system.

This is designed to help operators achieve higher levels of accuracy and input cost savings when working with implements such as amenity turf sprayers, spreaders and drills.

Mike Ramsay of MC Country Services Ltd, who is based in Rushden in Northamptonshire, bought one of the first John Deere AutoTrac compact tractors in the UK from his local dealer Farol Ltd after seeing a top of the range 66hp 4066R at the IOG Saltex show.

Mike offers a wide variety of professional grass, paddock, pasture and sports field maintenance plus fencing services for local councils, utilities, private estates, agricultural and equine properties and smallholdings across Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire.

He specialises in reseeding, spraying, mowing and topping, fertilising, harrowing, soil aeration and hedgecutting, and up until his visit to Saltex had been running a fleet of three compact tractors – one 35hp and two 50hp – on turf tyres to take the range of implements needed to perform each task.

“I was looking specifically to buy an extra tractor with more horsepower to join the fleet, particularly for flail mowing and hedgecutting,” says Mike.

“I was also looking at the latest GPS technology to help me do the jobs more efficiently and productively, and with more accuracy. I wanted to save both time and wastage of inputs through overlapping or misses,

particularly with the sprayer, spreader and drill attachments.

“I went for the full GPS system with AutoTrac automatic handsfree steering, a GreenStar 4640 touchscreen display, SF6000 satellite receiver and SF3 signal plus JDLink telematics. I’ve also since bought a matching John Deere 440R front loader.

“Using JDLink I can get reports sent to my phone and/or PC straight after any job, just the same as with John Deere’s bigger agricultural tractors.

“For example, when I’m spraying, the system records wind speed, temperature, tank mix contents, application rates, you name it. Customers love it – I can send them the details straight away. The system’s connectivity is fantastic for record keeping, accountability and traceability.

“Once the tractor has been set up for a particular job, you just set a constant speed and away you go – the only time you touch the steering wheel is when you need to turn around, but then the system finds the next parallel pass and away you go again.

“Hitch Assist is a fantastic system as well, I use it all the time – the implements are heavy, and this reduces the time taken to hitch them up by about 50 per cent.

“The tractor’s GreenStar 4640 display controls all the main precision turf operations, including data capture and documentation, AutoTrac handsfree steering and sprayer Section Control. I also use the John Deere MyOperations app via JDLink, which is brilliant for monitoring and managing field work.

“Basically I’m very happy to sit in the John Deere all day, I just love using it for every job, and it’s amazing how much time you can save doing them. I wouldn’t have a tractor without AutoTrac now, not for the work I do.”

Excellent exposure for Ventrac at The Game Fair

Rupert Price and the team from Price Turfcare had a superb response to their first visit as exhibitors at The Game Fair, held at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire at the end of July.

With almost 120,000 visitors across the three-day event, the exposure for the Ventrac brand was outstanding

Rupert Price said: “I think it helped that we had moving demonstrations on our stand, which enabled visitors to get a glimpse of what the machine can do.

“We had ramps at 20 and 30 degrees to demonstrate its unique climbing ability and also had a bit of fun when we balanced

a football in the airflow of one of the leaf blower attachments, which tended to stop people in their tracks.”

The Ventrac all-terrain compactor has over 30 different attachments that can be front-mounted to provide an extremely versatile machine for a wide range of estate management applications. With a choice of eight mowing decks, it can maintain grassed areas ranging from fine turf to thick brush.

Other attachments include aerators, aera-vators, brushes, blowers, overseeders, rotovators, buckets and grabs, stump grinders, trenchers and snow removal accessories.

In its eight-wheel configuration it can operate on slopes of 30 degrees – the only ride-on machine in the UK certificated

for such steep gradients. Price Turfcare Enquiry 32

Introducing the new and improved TYM tractors

In response to Stage V emissions regulations and customer feedback, TYM is launching a new range of tractors with a host of improvements and features to provide even more value to customers. And first off the blocks are the T255 subcompact and T555 compact tractors.

Replacing the TS25, a popular model in the subcompact tractor market, is the T255. With the same features that set the TS25 apart from its competitors, the T255 offers even more with its fresh new design.

Its 25.3hp Yanmar diesel engine is Stage V compliant but avoids the need for expensive exhaust treatments such as a DPF filter,

keeping costs down for the customer. Available with a twin range HST, the new model is also equipped with auto throttle response as standard, which synchronises the HST pedals with the engine throttle for much simpler, and less fatiguing, operation.

A 540rpm rear PTO and 2000rpm mid PTO can be used together simultaneously to allow for efficient and multi-functional combinations such as a middeck and grass collector. Plus, following customer feedback, the T255 now comes with one set of spool valves as standard, rather than as an optional accessory.

Profihopper PH 1500 is now really for all seasons

The flexibility offered by the PowerCompactor system on the Profihopper PH 1250 and PH 1500 is key when it comes to needing a mower that will collect in the wet or the dry.

The unique double auger system comprises of a horizontal auger collecting the grass off the back of the SmartCut cutting rotor and then conveying it to a second central vertical auger that packs the cut material into the collecting hopper at the back.

This compacting action ensures the maximum capacity of the hopper is utilised with more than a third more grass being collected between hopper emptying than a conventional collection system.

This collection system operates dust-free in a dry time making it ideal for working amongst

bystanders and in tight, limited manoeuvrability areas, such as caravan and holiday parks whereas, in a wet time, the collection quality is just as good meaning that mowing operations can be completed even after a dewy start to the day or after a heavy shower.

This ability to cut in the wet is all very well, but the poor operator still has to sit outside whatever the weather. But now, Amazone Groundcare have launched the cabbed version of the PH 1500.

The huge glass area, with slender A and B pillars, ensures that the optimum visibility is still maintained yet with the wide, easyaccess doors making getting in and out comfortable and convenient. Once inside, the creature comforts are all there, radio, air seat, Bluetooth phone connectivity for

hands-free mobile connection and a comfortable working environment generated by the airconditioning system. The overall height is kept to a minimum to try and keep the Profihopper’s ability to reach those places that other mowers can’t reach.

So when it comes to utilising the PH 1500’s ability to work

year-round; whether scarifying, leaf collecting, maintaining wild flower meadows, single pass mowing on environmental and conservation areas or leaving that immaculate striped finish on tightly-mown lawns, then the cabbed PH 1500 is the mower/ collector of choice.

Owners support purchase of Ventrac for Dudsbury course

The owners of Dudsbury Golf Club, Hotel & Spa, Beate and Len Robinson, have supported long-serving head greenkeeper Warren Moss with the purchase of a Ventrac 4500 all-terrain compact tractor and Contour mowing deck to ensure the course stays in pristine condition.

Replacing an old zero-turn machine and an ageing Toro Sidewinder, the new package makes sound commercial sense.

Warren Moss said: “We use it on tee banks, green surrounds, bunker surrounds and can raise the height of cut to manage the semi-rough. Also, as it has a three-point linkage at the rear, we can mount our Sisis Twin Play with sorrel roller and slitter.

“My main reason for specifying this machine is its slope climbing ability. It’s extremely stable on slopes of up to 30 degrees, making it safe and manoeuvrable, especially on tees.

About a third of the course is on a flood plain, so can be quite wet in winter. Because of its light footprint in its eightwheel configuration we will be able to get out during wet spells without damaging the playing surfaces.

“I’m also impressed by the Aera-vator attachment, which makes aeration on banks possible, so this might possibly be our next purchase.”

Set in 160 acres of undulating Dorset countryside just outside of Bournemouth, the Donald Steel-designed 6,904yard, par 71 championship course features nine lakes and is bordered by the river Stour. It has hosted several prestigious events including the PGA Europro Tour, which featured on Sky Sports and the BMW PGA Order of Merit Championship.

Ariens introduces first rear discharge, petrol zero-turn for Europe

Ariens has introduced the APEX 48 RD rear discharge, petrol zero-turn mower, designed specifically for the European and UK markets.

Manufacturing the APEX 48 RD with rear discharge deck shows the company’s firm commitment to their European presence, says Ariens. They will build the new model in their Oxfordshire factory.

A rear discharge zero-turn offers the professional operator significant benefits, especially for council, local authority and amenity work.

There is less risk of objects being ejected from the side and hitting pedestrians or causing damage to cars and property, which may incur compensation. The operator can also trim on either side of the deck without

the need to change direction in order to avoid discharging grass cuttings on the road, pavement or flower beds. Containing the clippings behind the wheels and dropping them in the zero-turn’s path saves time and cleaning up.

The APEX 48 RD boasts the same class-leading specifications as Ariens APEX 48, but with the 122cm (48”) rear discharge deck which is fully fabricated, 10-gauge, and offers superior airflow with exceptional cutting performance.

The deck lift system is footoperated, and a spring-assisted lift allows you to adjust effortlessly between 15 cutting positions. The industry-leading solid and fully welded frame supports the overall design and an optional ROPS (Rollover Protection System) can be fitted to order.

Large tyres, 55.9cm (22”) rear and 33cm (13”) front, provide solid traction and a comfortable ride.

All-day comfort is also emphasised with the high-back plush seat and padded armrests. Power comes

Etesia finance offer makes grass cutting child’s play

Martin Carty, Managing Director at Carty Services, has revealed how a 0% interest finance offer from Etesia UK enabled him to improve operations on a wide range of school playing fields throughout Warwickshire.

During last year’s uncertainty and inevitable financial pressures, Etesia UK explored the best ways in which it could help their customers.

With this in mind, a three years’ interest-free fi nance offer on the all new Etesia Hydro 80 MKHP5 ride-on mower was

introduced to allow customers greater flexibility with their finance.

It was an offer which Martin Carty found too good to ignore. The Hydro 80 has also been robustly built and requires minimal maintenance.

Operators have access to the engine and all working parts, and the hydrostatic transmission system is maintenance free. The specially coated 60 mm tubular chassis is also designed for strength and long-life.

Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride.

And it’s that flexibility that sets the Profihopper apart from the crowd.

The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. To add to that versatility, the sward is rolled after cutting and scarifying comes as standard.

The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

Don’t compromise - choose the machine that comes with more compaction built-in for maximum work rates and less emptying.

Toro fleet expansion for CGM Group

One of the largest grounds maintenance and landscaping firms in the East of England, CGM Group based in Downham Market, Norfolk, has purchased four Toro LT3340 triple flail mowers to aid the 150-strong grounds team operating across East Anglia and the East Midlands for eight months of the year.

Marcus Glover, operations director at CGM Group, explains: “We need machinery we can rely on, machinery that is flexible and adaptable.

“We are not only faced with a wide range of landscapes and

environments, but the weather can apply added pressure to our work, particularly in 2021 when we’ve seen extraordinarily fast grass growth due to the wet and warm weather.

“The performance of the Toro mowers is excellent. We can expect fine finishes on cricket outfields to reliable, neat trimming for clients who require general monthly cuts throughout the season. The flexibility of the range of machines is superb.”

The four new mowers join five existing Toro machines,

Radley College extends its relationship

World-class sporting facilities are one of the cornerstones of prestigious boys’ school, Radley College in Oxfordshire, so it goes without saying that maintaining impeccable grounds is a must.

After 10 years of successfully using Toro, Radley College has once again renewed its arrangement with Reesink Turfcare to supply Toro fineturf and groundscare mowers to keep the school’s 228 acres in pristine condition.

“Flexibility is key” cites head of grounds, Adam King, who has worked at Radley College for 20 years.

“His teams are responsible for maintaining the school’s grounds and gardens, 30 hectares of which are pure sport pitches including rugby pitches, cricket-squares, football pitches, astroturf hockey pitches and tennis courts. Radley College also has a lake and a nine-hole golf course.

Thanks to the latest renewal agreement the school now has a nine-strong fleet of Toro mowers which includes two Greensmaster 3150Q, a Reelmaster 3100-D, a Greensmaster TriFlex 3400, two Reelmaster 3550-D and two compact and lightweight Reelmaster 3555-D mowers.

“Down time is not an option,” Adam continues. “We seldom have issues, but our lease agreement has back-up care built into it. If we have a problem I know I’ll have a mechanic on site the very next day. We’ve never had a machine down for more than 24-36 hours and that’s very important to us.

“It’s all about the machines” Adam concludes. “The finishing, the quality – it’s exemplary. And with the reliability and performance of our grounds machines taken care of it’s only mother nature we have to worry about!”

taking the overall fleet to nine. Famed for perfecting light trimming through to dealing with dense overgrowth, these mowers also come with kerbclimbing ability, making them particularly well suited to municipal sites.

Yet for Marcus, performance was just part of the equation. Marcus continues: “It’s also all about the support and back-up care.

“Although we’ve had no problems with use, the response time of the workshop is phenomenal. Replacement parts are sourced overnight so

I know I’ll have machines back out on the ground the following day. It means that, from an operational perspective, we are working as efficiently as we can.”

Marcus’ experience with the team at Reesink Turfcare, the exclusive distributor in the UK and Ireland for Toro groundscare machinery, is testament to the importance of a good working relationship and he credits Danny Lake with being “excellent” to deal with.

Game-changing versatility with Toro’s Sidewinder technology

For the ultimate versatility, Toro’s Sidewinder technology seen in the Reelmaster 3100-D and Groundsmaster 3500-D is game-changing.

Close strimming from a large ride-on mower is nifty innovation indeed and means areas that typically require two different machines can be maintained by one efficient mower. It’s no wonder these machines are so popular with greenkeepers and groundsmen across the industry.

Toro first patented its Sidewinder technology in 2000 for cylinder mower applications, with a second patent following in 2002 to cover all mower applications. Its USP is without question, its ability to move all three cutting units 12

inches right or left from the centre position for a full 24 inches of travel, adjusting overhang on both sides to fit every need.

The Reelmaster 3100-D is the only cylinder mower with Sidewinder technology, which when paired with its powerful 21.5hp Kubota diesel engine and one-click dial Dual Precision Adjustment cutting units guarantees an unparalleled quality and consistency of cut.

It means you can get under and around trees and other hard-toreach places and bring precise control to delicate jobs such as trimming around sand traps, water features, tee boxes and greens edges on the golf course.Choosing a ride-on mower with Sidewinder

technology cuts down on the number of machines required to carry a wide range of tasks, which will not only save time and money but also increase productivity and efficiency.

Campey provides zero emissions mowing

Campey Turf Care Systems now provide zero CO2-emissions mowing on areas ranging from regularly managed turf to overgrown vegetation using the 100% electric AllTrec Tool Carrier.

Being environmentally responsible is an essential cause of many companies and councils.

Using the AllTrec allows regular maintenance to be completed with zero emissions, minimal noise output and massively reduced vibration for operators, all of which help to improve green spaces without damaging the wider environment.

The machine has been designed by Dutch manufacturer, WeedControl B.V., to be the perfect solution for zero-emissions commercial mowing. The powerful cutting decks are available in 130cm or 180cm width of cut with the height of cut adjustable from 30-110mm.

Electric motors directly power the three blade 130cm deck and four blade 180cm deck with an adjustable speed between 20003000rpm.

With its zero turning capabilities, it is agile enough to work in small enclosed spaces while also having been designed to work on large areas with a long-lasting battery to match its versatility. The running time is entirely dependent on the circumstances,

but when cutting with the fourblade 180cm deck, the battery will typically last for 6-8 hours and 7-9 hours using the threeblade 130cm deck.

All batteries come with a three-year warranty and have a lifetime of + - 2500 charge discharge cycles. The 48VDC battery uses LifePO4 technology with a capacity of 20kwh or an optional 30kwh, with onboard charging taking 4-8 hours.

The AllTrec unit can also be used with a number of other attachments including the Air E-Variator, weed brush, and hedge cutter. The electrically driven hedge cutter can be fully operated using a joystick, making it easy to use for a day of work, while the E-Variator Weed Burner can be used alongside the weed brush to control weeds in a variety of locations. The weed brush can be hydraulically adjusted to any angle and used for a full day without any worry of batteries running out.

A large-action radius and highly efficient attachments combined with low operation and maintenance costs make the AllTrec perfect for use in urban environments, sports complexes, holiday resorts and parks by contractors, local authorities and landscapers.

Cub Cadet has launched its new top of the range Z9 183id zero-turn. Proven by landscape professionals the Z9 will fulfil all your commercial requirements.

With extremely wide double wheels, the Z9 has been developed to effortlessly tackle even the steepest slopes up to 25° / 46%.

The ability to control all four wheels with a steering wheel and steerable front wheels, an exclusive offering by Cub Cadet in the commercial sector, minimises the turf being churned up by the wheels as it would on a lap bar zero-turn.

The patented SyncroSteer ® technology means that even the less experienced operators can benefit from the ease of use and amazing manoeuvrability of this machine.

The Z9 reduces mowing time by up to 10% compared to lap bar mowers, provides greater hillside stability, enhanced traction on uneven terrain as well as mowing in straighter lines.

It powers through the thickest grass in one pass at maximum speeds of up to 12mph meaning you can do the job quicker.

The high lift Marbain blades with a blade tip speed up to

The operator’s choice – Razorback’s Auto-Level

Designed and built in Worcestershire, the Razorback Auto-level reach mower is the smart self-levelling reach mower that takes the hard work out hedge and verge mowing.

With usability in mind the AutoLevel has been engineered to reduce operator fatigue, increase productivity, and reduce cost. Featuring advanced electronic proportional controls as standard, operation of the machine is simple and precise.

Auto-Level Co-Pilot technology also comes as standard and ensures that the main frame of the machine remains level, irrespective of the tractor angle in relation to undulating ground. As a result, the requirement to make manual adjustments

to account for the unevenness of the terrain is significantly reduced, making for a much easier, trouble-free operation.

Razorback’s range include a 5.5m reach machine as well as a larger 6.8m telescopic model, available with flail and rotary head options. Flail head options include 1.5m and 1.2m wide versions and feature a unique hood design, engineered to allow for greater trash flow for a more efficient and even cut.

In addition to the reach mower range, Razorback also offer a range of rotary and flail mowing solutions suited to both the agricultural and amenity markets.

18,500 fpm and the 3” total blade overlap will ensure that you always get a tight consistent cut.

The frame and axle on the Z9 floats as the machine moves, allowing the multi-reinforced steel deck to follow the shape of the terrain and avoid scalping.

The cutting deck can be adjusted at the touch of a button. The Kawasaki EFI engine provides the consistent power you need to get the job done and maximise your workday – reducing the downtime which could cost you both time and money. The petrol engine benefits from having

lower emissions and reduced fuel usage.

Comfort is at the forefront of the machine’s design. Your operators can experience a smooth ride all day long thanks to the exclusive air-ride seat and isolated dampening system on the Z9 – meaning they are working in vibration-controlled comfort, lessening downtime for your business.

Angled back adjustments, padded armrest and lumbar support give added protection.

Ideal for commercial users and owners of large properties with challenging slopes, the Z9 has

everything and more that you would expect from a quality professional machine - ultimate performance, comfort and

that delivers a fast, premium cut time and time again.

High performance and engineered for mowing slopes

For over 60 years, AS Motor have been working continuously on new technologies and the consistent further development of their extensive range of mowers.

The popular AS 1040 Yak ride-on flail mower from ASMotor Germany GmbH & Co. is a major innovation for ride-on mowers and includes both 4WD and 2WD models.

In high grass, flail mowers are particularly impressive due to their high work rates, robustness in the event of unseen foreign objects and they offer consistent cutting results.

The AS 1040 YAK 4WD’s 100cm wide robust flail mowing unit is a superior alternative to conventional rotary mowing. It offers significantly less risk of damage and also ensures operator safety. It has balanced weight distribution – 45% on the front axle and 55% on the rear axle which ensures outstanding traction and safe working irrespective of the terrain and is suitable for operating on slopes up to 21°.

Also available from PSD Groundscare is the AS 940 Remote

Control brushcutter for mowing areas where walking is difficult!

Mowing on steep and difficult terrain has always been a challenge for the machine operator and the AS 940 and AS 940 XL ride on brushcutter have been especially developed for this demanding application. Equipped with 27hp, 4wd, limited-slip differential and cross blade, the AS 940 easily mows dense, high grass and undergrowth on terrain where other mowers would have been forced to give up.

With ride-on brushcutters, steep slopes can be mown conveniently and economically. However, there are always areas where mowing is very unpleasant or unsafe for the operator, including steep terrain, loose substrate, mowing under trees and bushes, along hedges and even areas around wasp nests.

However, AS Motor have the solution - the AS 940 Remote Control mower which offers all the benefits of the standard AS 940 but with the option to convert to remote control when required.

New Reform Metrac H75 launched into UK market

The Stuart Taylor International dealership has recently supplied the first two new model, compact, hydrostatic drive, Reform Metrac H75 multi-functional tool carriers into the UK, to Cheshire based contractor Ray Britland and Lancashire based contractor Ontrack AGM.

Simon Richard, UK Agent for the Reform range said that improving a tried and tested product is always a special challenge but the new H75 model meets all end user requirements, including versatillity, efficency and both user and environmental friendliness.

Hydrostatic drive with electronic control offers two speed ranges,

two terrain gear reductions and foot and hand drive modes.

When four-wheel steering is active, the front and rear wheels run exactly in the same line, ensuring tension-free traction on more difficult terrain. Front, rear, four wheel and crab steering as well as offset four-wheel steering can easily be switched at the push of a button.

The system is completed by the electro-hydraulic spring brake with an auto hold function which allows smooth and judder-free setting off on slopes.

The 75hp Perkins common rail diesel engine delivers 300Nm torque and the newly designed all-terrain chassis delivers four wheel drive, a four wheel

steering system and five steering modes. The new H75 also offers powerful working front and rear hydraulics with 1500kg lifting force and standard weight compensation and the high efficiency of the electro-hydraulic power shift PTO provides power precisely when needed.

Operator comfort is catered for with a newly designed cab which has been completely decoupled from other vehicle components. The multifunction joystick combines all functions for driving and for controlling attachments.

A Trilo S3 takes command of leaf clearance

The 18 holes at Hertfordshire’s prestigious Centurion Club explore pine-lined fairways and woodland that pose a challenge to players and greenkeepers alike.

One of the biggest problems for Course Manager Andy Garland and his team was, as the parkland course matured, so did the task of autumn leaf-clearance.

That was until the club purchased a Trilo S3 vacuum sweeper from Vanmac two years ago, which has since been described as ‘fundamental’ in retaining the presentation, playability and health of the course.

Working at a convenient 1.5m wide, the Trilo S3 weighs in at only 1200kg making it suitable

for compact tractors of 35HP+. The full-floating brush head and low ground pressure, allows the machine to work under the heaviest of conditions, with hard-to-reach areas - in and around trees for example - cleared with convenience and ease thanks to the 6m wander hose.
