When public playgrounds were closed in the first lockdown, it brought their ‘essential’ status sharply into focus.
As the majority of UK children live in urban areas and 1 in 8 households have no outdoor space, millions were left with nowhere to play, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds were the most affected.
And currently, despite Government guidelines to keep playgrounds open in lockdown, primarily for those families without gardens, some authorities are failing to do so plunging many families into despair.
Unless we tackle playground closures, many children will stay in perpetual ‘lockdown,’ claims the Association of Play Industries.
COVID-19 secure golf paper
In response to the latest national lockdown and the Government making clear it intends to maintain its “science first” approach in their decisionmaking process, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf has updated its “COVID-19 Secure Golf in the United Kingdom” paper to include greater evidence and rationale from leading experts to again make the case for the sport to make an early return.
The updated document, titled
by epidemiologist and Principal Advisor on Physical Activity for Health to the four United Kingdom Chief Medical Officers, Professor Charlie Foster and Chief Medical Officer to the European Tour, Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, Dr Andrew Murray.
Professor Foster said golf can be played safely, and it should have a central role in the government’s thinking when it comes to helping people exercise now and as we come out of pandemic restrictions.
BIGGA Enquiry 2
Children were being driven indoors long before official lockdown. The combined effects of the widespread closure of play spaces in recent years and the toxic lure of screens and technology, meant that increasingly, children were spending their time indoors, sedentary and alone.
This year of lockdown after lockdown has profoundly compounded this effect. Chair of the API, Mark Hardy says: “This unique pause presents us with a rare opportunity to transform our children’s lives through the power of outdoor play.
“By re-imagining our public spaces, we can reverse the alarming decline in the number of public play spaces which has quietly been taking place, local authority by local authority.
“We must put children at the heart of recovery. Playground closures are nothing short of catastrophic for children’s mental health, fitness, development and overall wellbeing.
“If we continue to fail to view communities from the perspective of children there will be more and more closed, neglected and often dangerous environments where there once stood a precious play space created exclusively with children in mind.
“We welcome Sport England’s new 10-year vision – Uniting the Movement – and in particular their 5 Big Issues,” says Mark.
“It’s crucial now that we come together as a nation to ensure that everyone has equal access to the benefits of exercise and for children this means outdoor play.
“We particularly welcome the strategy’s focus on tackling and preventing inequality: community playgrounds are great levellers as open-to-all public spaces in which ALL children can play freely and safely.”
Association of Play Industries Enquiry 1
Five key issues:
• Recover and reinvent –Place children at the heart of recovery by building a sustainable network of public play spaces.
• Connecting Communities – Playgrounds are often the heart of the community, where parents, grandparents, neighbours and children from all walks of life go to meet.
• Positive experiences for children and young people – Safe, challenging and stimulating play spaces give children the freedom to play, socialise and have fun in a space dedicated to them.
• Connecting with health and wellbeing – Active children become active adults, giving them the lifelong joys and benefits of an active life.
• Active environments – Local and accessible ‘doorstep’ playgrounds make it easier for all children to get active.
Invest in public play spaces or children face ‘perpetual lockdown’ New Terafirm Granular from Headland Amenity
Headland Amenity have announced the introduction of a new granular version of their popular penetrant wetter Terafirm.
Suitable for use in all fine and coarse turf situations, the Terafirm range improves the downward movement of water through the soil profile, helping to achieve a firmer playing surface.
Terafirm is a non-phytotoxic soil penetrant, which works by reducing the surface tension of water to facilitate accelerated
open up pore space within the soil profile during dry down by improving natural soil contraction.
The launch of Terafirm granular, in addition to the existing liquid formulation, means it can now be applied in even more areas and
in different conditions than was previously the case. Containing the same active ingredient as in liquid Terafirm, use of the granular product is an effective alternative to spraying.

Headland Amenity Enquiry
During the opening month of 2021 one word seems to have become increasingly important – recovery. There has been a good deal of looking forward towards a more positive and settled future with Government spearheading attempts to identify recovery programmes for various sectors and industries. It was timely, therefore, that Sport England chose January to launch its new 10-year strategy with a clear emphasis on recovery throughout the far-reaching report. It is an ambitious and welcome strategy, although many have been quick to point out that it succeeds and fails on adequate support and funding for the sport, play and activity providers.
The Association of Play Industries seized on the strategy as a prime example of why its #playmuststay campaign deserves wider support. As the API warned, a lot of children face the prospect of a permanent “play lockdown” due to the failure to support the sector and invest in parks, green spaces and play areas in recent years. Indeed, there is little hope of a 10-year strategy to boost activity levels succeeding if a significant proportion of the population does not have access to even the most basic facilities.
It shows the importance of a whole industry approach to ensuring decision-makers at both a national and local level remain clear on just how important parks, green spaces, play facilities and other community assets continue to be and the influential role they are likely to have as part of a national recovery programme. This month we have our regular Play & Activity feature, showcasing this important sector. There is also a special spotlight on remote and robotic hedge and verge mowing machinery from Jane Carley, along with the usual mix of groundscare and landscaping news, views, product launches and case studies. So as hopes of a recovery gather pace, it is time to focus on the many positive aspects of our wider industry and support those seeking greater Government recognition.

National Lottery funding available now to help UK heritage thrive again
The National Lottery Heritage Fund has announced that applications have reopened for project grants from £3,000 to £5million.
This welcome news follows almost a year of providing emergency support for heritage in response to the COVID-19 crisis. National Lottery Grants for Heritage is the UK’s largest funding stream for heritage projects, with £200m to £300m usually distributed each year.
In March 2020, The National Lottery Heritage Fund halted new project funding, with all efforts focussed on supporting heritage across the UK to survive and recover from the impact of COVID-19. Thanks to the £50 million Heritage
Emergency Fund, more than 950 organisations across the UK were able to cope with the challenges they faced when they needed it most.
In November 2020 applications for projects between £3,000 to £100,000 reopened and from today, applications are once again open for funding awards from £3,000 up to £5million.
Ros Kerslake, CEO of The National Lottery Heritage Fund said: “Heritage has an essential role to play in making communities better places to live, creating economic prosperity and supporting personal wellbeing.
All of these are going to be vitally important as we
Brexit stops Nursery plant supply to Northern Ireland
One of the UK’s Leading commercial nurseries, Johnsons Of Whixley, has had to stop supplying plants to Northern Ireland after new Brexit restrictions came into play in January.
Before Brexit, the company sold £500,000 worth of plants a year to Northern Irish customers, but new and impractical restrictions have put a wedge between longstanding trading relationships.
The new legislation stops nurseries like Johnsons supplying Rootball, Bare Root and Container plants into the EU and now Northern Ireland. Plants which originate from a bare root young plant, or those that have had any contact with the soil, even if container grown, are considered a risk due to the likely legacy of soil residue which has the potential to carry pathogens or nematodes.
While not impossible, soil residue removal is impractical and would defeat the object of
rootballing and containerisation.
Johnsons Head of Production and Procurement, Jonathan Whittemore commented:
“This legislation penalises UK growers and gives an immediate competitive advantage to EU suppliers who may go on to monopolise supply into an existing part of the UK at the expense of our business and the wider industry.
“The Brexit ‘project’ was meant to reduce red tape and bureaucracy and was surely not intended to penalise UK Suppliers and active Northern Ireland/UK customers.
“The restriction was designed to protect the wider EU Flora and Fauna, under this scenario there is ‘nil’ risk to the EU from Johnsons traditional supply into NI be it from our own production or ironically imports sourced in the EU and supplied into NI.”

build back from the current pandemic. During 2020 we focused on supporting heritage across the UK to adapt and respond to the immediate impact of the COVID-19 crisis.
“By the end of this financial year we will have supported more than 1,500 organisations across the heritage sector with over £500million of National Lottery and Government funding.
“Our focus now is to support the heritage sector to strengthen its recovery and to build back for positive change – reopening applications for heritage projects is key to the success of this.”
The National Lottery Heritage Fund Enquiry 6
The critical change is that – between April 2021 and March 2022
– when making funding decisions, priority will be given to heritage projects that deliver at least one of the following outcomes: Boosting local economies, including job creation
• Improving people’s wellbeing
• Making local areas better place to live, work and visit
• Developing skills, including creating training opportunities
• Improving the resilience of organisations we fund
These priority outcomes will ensure that the funding provided by National Lottery players will support the wider UK economic and social recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coffee cup composite helps harvest urban waste for decking solutions
Further elevating its environmental credentials, sustainable UK decking manufacturer Ecodek has progressed development of its solid composite products by making single-use coffee cups part of its material fabrication process.
As a result of a collaboration with independent plastic recycling and resource management consultancy Nextek, Ecodek will be repurposing these cupsthe material of which currently proves challenging for recycling plants to process.
Although made largely of paper, disposable coffee cups are lined with plastic, typically polyethylene, which is tightly bonded to the paper to make the cups waterproof and able to retain liquid. In addition, the cups are often contaminated with remnants of the drink they contained, so cannot be recycled at standard paper recycling plants
Kubota (UK) Ltd Enquiry 11 and must instead be taken to special facilities – of which only a few exist throughout Europe.
Trailblazing a capability to demonstrate sustainable repurposing for used cups here in the UK, Ecodek has applied its extruding expertise to successfully create strong polymer composites to form into a completely waterproof building material.
The company has developed a strong industry-wide reputation for its continued commitment to environmental issues.
Following years of research on paper plastic composites, Nextek has successfully devised processes that enable strong blends of paper fibre and plastics to be effectively converted to manufacturing and building materials.

Aggregate Industries completes first carbon neutral pavement scheme
The contracting division of Aggregate Industries has made history by completing the UK’s first carbon neutral pavement scheme as part of Highways England’s A590 M6 J36 to Brettarg Holt resurfacing project.
Heavily trafficked, the surface had come to the end of its life with dangerous potholes and uneven surfacing posing a real safety risk for drivers. Hence, Highways England’s (HE) objective was to ensure the new road was
constructed quickly, safely and with minimum disruption to customers and the local road network.
This pavement design option meant that the structural layers of the existing road surface were recycled and encapsulated back into the pavement by producing an ex situ cold recycled asphalt which - when combined with the use of Aggregate Industries’ recently launched range of SuperLow asphalt helped to achieve a carbon neutral pavement construction. As
the only Carbon Neutral asphalt available in the UK, SuperLow technology enables reduced carbon levels when compared to standard asphalt due to being manufactured at reduced temperatures.
Key to this, a dedicated SiteBatch mixing plant was placed on site to ensure continuous and consistent Foamix material was produced, supported by a fleet of Volvo Moxy dumper trucks to transfer material to site and return the extracted planings. This approach allowed for maximum efficiency and saw the team lay over a 1,000T of Foamix asphalt per night, working 24 hours a day across two shifts, ensuring minimum disruption to the local area while keeping in advance of all key deadlines.
Working in this way, asides from the obvious benefit of improved circular economy and significant reductions in CO2 in the mixing process, negated the need for truck movements and waste disposal costs, hugely improving the sustainability aspects. The result was a huge 43% carbon reduction, as opposed to when using conventional resurfacing methods.

Green-tech launch a biodegradable and environmentallyfriendly tree shelter
The newly launched Bio-Earth Tree Shelter is a biodegradable plasticfree tree shelter.
An environmentally-friendly alternative to the traditional plastic products used to protect young trees and hedges.
Green-tech has been involved in its development over the last two years to meet the growing demand from the landscaping and forestry industries to reduce the plastic tree shelter shelters used as essential protection during tree planting.
The Bio-Earth Tree Shelter is made from a special water-proof FSC-approved cardboard which is 100% biodegradable, recyclable, and compostable. Its lifespan is dependent upon planting conditions and location but is typically 3 years.
Once the tree is established enough to no longer need it, the Bio-Earth Tree Shelter can be left to safely biodegrade. Ventilation and light holes at the top of the Bio-Earth
Tree Shelter provide the tree or whip with an ideal growing climate. It comes with a ‘no ties’ staking and securing system which ensures that planting is done swiftly and simply without any further materials, just the stake.
Sales Director Richard Gill comments: “Reducing plastic and sustainability has been high on our agenda for a long time and we have been working on its development for two years. It is a fantastic feeling to see it come to life. The Bio-Earth Tree Shelter has been designed to be supplied flat-pack, hugely reducing the carbon footprint on deliveries as they take up so much less space than a traditional shelter; another area we are working on across the business.”
Green-tech is selling the plastic-free tree shelters in a range of heights from 60cm through to 1.5m and provide the option to buy the stakes and canes as part of a package.

An increasing number of fencing stockists and contractors are seeing the financial and reputational benefits of offering Postsaver products; with extremely encouraging sales even in the current economic climate.
To complement its existing range, Postsaver now also supplies the latest generation of post fixing foam as a lightweight, water free alternative to post concrete, plus numerous other installation tools and accessories. Postsaver Enquiry 30
Jacksons Fencing specified for Dover Western Docks revival
Dover Western Docks Revival (DWDR) is a £250million investment by the Port of Dover, with UK Government planning approval, and support from private finance and European Union grant funding.
Part of the development involved the construction of a new 500+ metre long pier and marina curve with the aim to provide excellent views of Dover from the sea. To allow the pier to be closed during adverse weather conditions and overnight to improve public safety, gates were required to secure the area.
Jacksons Fencing’s Barbican double leaf gates, measuring 8m wide and 2m high, were installed at the entrance to the pier, to provide a strong access control solution without compromising on aesthetics.
The gates are polyester powder coated black after galvanisation, providing a glossy, durable finish.
Additionally, they come with a 25-year guarantee, offering a low lifetime cost when compared with the cost to replace those with a shorter lifespan.
The double leaf vertical bar gates have an integrated slide latch and centre drop bolt.
This enables them to be held open throughout the day, allowing visitors to enjoy the pier and its amazing views of the sea, castle, and world famous white cliffs.
Spanning the width of the pier, the opening also allows essential access for maintenance vehicles, and emergency services when necessary.

Upgraded school benefits from British made fencing
St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle, Cumbria, recently benefited from the successful installation of Zaun’s Duo6 perimeter fencing system and gates by Middleton Forge.
The popular secondary school for students aged 11-18, it was of utmost importance that St John Henry Newman had a secure fencing and gate solution in place for the new school year. Even in these highly unusual global circumstances, it’s important that not just school kids are safe while on the premises, but that the school buildings remain secure at all times to deter would-be thieves from breaking and entering.
Based in Middleton in Teesdale, family business Middleton Forge stepped up to help with securing the school’s two hundred metre perimeter, knowing that Zaun‘s
Duo6 fencing system were the ideal solution. The Duo6 perimeter fencing system is ideal for schools, as St John Henry Newman Catholic School illustrates. The fencing is designed with vandal-resistant fixings, while also being strong and inoffensive: aesthetically, it’s subtle enough to blend into a professional or educational environment with ease.
Some of the best features of Duo6 British made fencing is manufactured and designed to feature 5mm vertical bar wires, sandwiched between two horizontal wires of 6mm each providing a cost effective, but strong and secure perimeter fencing solution.

eibe play completes work at historic community
An amazing new community facility from Creative Play
A civil engineering graduate and an ambulance driver after the First World War, William Scott Abbott first visited Sacrewell Farm in October 1917.
An outstanding farmer and agricultural innovator, he had a strong desire to educate people about the rural landscape and surrounding countryside near Sacrewell.
The extraordinary history and traditions of Sacrewell (which date back to The Domesday Survey in the 11th Century) were upheld after William’s death, when in 1964, his wife Mary established the William Scott Abbott Trust.
Since then, the charity has provided a centre of educative excellence in the field of farming; from school children to fans of agricultural heritage, families flock to enjoy all that Sacrewell offers. Indeed, many who visited the farm as youngsters return with a new generation, maintaining those traditions and rich history.
School trips are also incredibly popular and eibe Play is delighted to have been involved with the recent playground renovation, so that children of all ages can continue to enjoy the multifaceted attractions at Sacrewell.

The playground within the village of Wingrave, Aylesbury needed a full refurbishment – the area had an old bark pit with a range of timber play equipment that was approaching 20 years old. The playground looked tired and worn, had a swing frame with no swing seats and lacked the offering of play to children of all ages and abilities.
We conducted an on-site consultation with one of the councillors, to discuss how we could maximise the space available. The brief was very broad, with the only necessity being to incorporate classic elements of play but to have a modern twist.
The product range itself required guidance and advice on how to make the most of the area catering for a wide age group and keeping the aesthetics in-line with the rural setting.
The play area is located opposite a beautiful Church within the village meaning the design of the space needed to compliment the surroundings.
It was also adjacent to a large field which is used for many sports events including football matches, bowls and croquet so we were informed the play area is heavily used and needed to be robust and low maintenance.
Working with a budget of £70,000, the council confirmed they would like to remove everything and start with a blank canvas. We liaised very closely with the council throughout the design concept stages to ensure we met their requirements and met with councillors to show the final designs and confirmed they were happy with the final proposal.
The space was transformed from having one swing set, spinner, climbing frame, slide and catering for a very small group to a having a large three tower Jigsaw play system packed with a multitude of play features
Gerflor support sustainability with Taraflex at sports centre
including two slides, five swings, two springers, a spinner, roundabout, seesaw and the addition of a Tractor to integrate the rural setting. A variety of different surfaces were laid in several colours to further enhance the space and ensure the area met all BSEN1176/1177 safety standards.
The final project came in under budget and the council and community are extremely pleased with the completed project that provides play for all ages and abilities and promotes physical development and an active lifestyle.

Mowing without limits
The latest remote control mowers benefit from new emissionscompliant engines and tech which makes them more agile and efficient, ready to tackle the toughest of jobs, reports Jane Carley.
McConnel has upgraded its Robocut RC56 and RC75 remote control mowers which are now powered by Stage V engines and offer increased durability and added versatility.
Power comes from 56hp threecylinder or 75hp four-cylinder turbo diesel Hatz engines that meet the latest Stage V emission regulations by using a DPF system without the need for AdBlue. Developed in partnership with Hatz GmbH, the engines can work on slopes of 55 degrees and deliver market leading power-to-weight ratio.
The twin roll-over protection bars have been increased in size to stand proud of the body panels for greater protection and now feature eight dedicated accessory
mounting points. The larger design of the bars enables the new, higher IP-rated e-stops to be recessed within the roll-over bars to reduce the risk of accidental activation.
Fewer body panels minimise unnecessary joints and allow for sturdier fitment and improved sealing that prevents ingress of debris. Thickness of the GRP panels has now been increased by 50% for added strength and rigidity. Steel fabricated fuel and hydraulic tanks with extended under-tank protection plates further enhance durability.
Servicing of the Robocut2 is now more convenient thanks to the relocation of the air filter, fuel filter, oil filler cap and the introduction of one-piece, removable side panels.
Hydrostatic drive offers two ranges, with speeds up to 3.5/7 kph. Track tensioning springs have been uprated for improved track retention in challenging environments and standard rubber, super rubber, studded and spiked tracks can be specified allowing work on slopes up to 55 degrees in any direction.
The handheld remote-control unit has also been updated and now features the ability to control electronic switches and functions of attachments directly. Improved screen graphics, faster refresh rates and backlit LCD display have also been introduced for improved visibility in low light conditions.
Trimble GPS autosteer is now available as a plug-and-play
option and significantly boosts output by allowing the operators to accurately control Robocut2 to within 25mm over its 150m range, eliminating wasteful overlap with each pass.
Developed as a mower for fine turf applications where a light footprint and minimal surface disturbance is paramount, the Robocut RC28 has also received a number of enhancements for 2021.
Performance upgrades include an up-rated generator which achieves higher power output and a redesigned fuel system to improve engine performance.
Additionally, a redesigned softstart clutch reduces both clutch and belt wear.
Structural upgrades include a reinforced deck to protect the rotor from impacts with foreign objects that may occur. A heavyduty hinge and thicker GRP hood also improve rigidity.
Air flow within the hood has been further enhanced with redesigned lower body panels and the addition of an extractor fan to expel hot air from the engine bay. Increased heat shielding of auxiliary components helps reduce heat transfer even further.
Safety upgrades include additional high visibility reflectors front and rear to improve visibility as well as an amber LED beacon which now meets road safety standards.
Engineering and software enhancements to the Agria 9600 remote-controlled rotary
mulching mower have made it smarter and more effective on even steeper banks and verges, says distributor Agria UK, sister company to Wiedenmann UK.
The Agria 9600 allows the operator to take a safe position up to 100 metres away using a hand-held control pad, while an increase in capability means that it can now work on 55deg slopes, which brings scope to tackle even tougher areas.
A heavier duty design with thicker steel features on the 2021 version. The electric motors and generator are more powerful and now brushless. Stronger and greased seal bearings have been introduced while the V-belt now tensions automatically.
The Agria 9600 comes in 80 and 112cm working widths, cutting and mulching in two directions

and has a variety of applications, including fine turf, while offering an adjustable cutting height of 50 -185 mm. It can cover up to 10,000sqm/hr assuming a forward speed of 10 km/hr.
Smart technology has been applied inside the easy-accessed control box where the electronics are protected from dust, vibration and moisture. The software communicates constantly with the sensors and intervenes in critical circumstances. For example, it will alert the operator to any harmful objects such as large stones by shutting down immediately. The colour display on the remote-control handset also sends a warning should the machine approach a critical slope or need refuelling.
Innovative ‘electric hybrid drive’ allows the Agria 9600 to be more efficient and environmentally
friendly than other hydraulic concepts. Safety extra low voltage (48V) electricity is generated as the petrol engine drives the mower blades and generator and maintenance-free motors convert the current to power the tracks. A replacement fuel cannister system makes refuelling safe and easy, even on difficult terrain and two standard 10 litre cannisters can be easily removed and reconnected.
Optional new crawler tracks with non-slip cleat-profile, offer even more grip while robust collision protection has been added.
Kilworth Machinery offers the Green Climber range, with more models in full production for 2021.
Designed to be used with a wide range of attachments including stump grinders and snow clearance equipment as well as
flails and mulchers, the range starts with the 50hp LV500 Pro.
The 56hp LV600 Plus now has uprated pumps to give more power to the mulcher/flail over the old LV600 model.
“In 2020 the 75hp LV800 proved to be the most popular model, and most were sold with a fixed tooth forestry mulcher for land clearance work,” explains Kilworth’s Mark Parnham.
The Green Climber LV800 features adjustable width tracks which are controlled from the remote control unit, and along with a side shift for mulcher this allows vegetation to be tackled on extreme side slopes, up to 60deg. Quick attach hydraulic pipes make for rapid swaps between implements, with three auxiliary spool valves for tools with a higher hydraulic requirement.
Maintenance is eased with a selfclean radiator system and there’s an on-board charging system for the remote control, which has a range of 150m. Attachments include a heavy duty forestry mulcher in working widths up to 1.5m.
The LV800 offers a good power to weight ratio – the machine and mulcher can be carried on a trailer behind a 4x4 or pickup
and specification also includes an electric recovery winch.
Bomford Turner’s Flailbot range comprises five power units, each with a wide range of attachments from flails to snow blowers.
Joysticks on the remote control unit provide precise control of forward or reverse track speeds from 0-7kph and machine data, including incline, altitude and speed, is fed to a visual display on the controller. When working on slopes, the operator can adjust the offset needed to maintain direction and a service assistant function offers routine maintenance alerts and diagnostics.
To reduce the risk of flying debris when reverse rotation is selected, the cutting head’s front hood is held closed by an electronic interlock and pressure sensors electronically control the flail head float via lift rams.
Flailbot can be fitted with standard rubber tracks to limit pressure on the ground; high grip rubber for mixed soils and, for extreme slopes, steellinked tracks with inserts and additional studs.
A new Flailbot with Tier 4B engine with a 20% horsepower
increase over the old Flailbot original plus many other new features is promised for 2021.
For steep mowing or where traffic flow makes for dangerous situations, the tracked Ryetec Robofox, can be operated from a safe distance with the remote control while the compact engine driven hybrid or fully electric version makes short work of difficult to access areas. It is easily transported from site to site with a van or pick up due to a relatively light weight of 500kg.
Irus machines have been redesigned and upgraded to follow the new EU Stage V emission regulations, and the company has chosen the latest common rail diesel engines from Doosan, reports importer Loxston Machinery.
The new machines available for spring 2021 include the Deltrak 3 which offers more power and more torque from a larger hydraulic pump and fully compliant 50hp Stage V engine. It is also available with a 60hp Doosan engine for increased power and torque.
Latest version of the Twin has the same design and dual implement features but now with a 75hp Doosan engine and more than twice the torque from the original model producing up to 320 Nm .
For smaller jobs the Deltrak 2.5 now uses a normally aspirated high torque 25hp Stage V diesel
engine, while the Evotrak tracked machine is fitted with a Stage V compliant 27hp high torque petrol engine and fearture with a 125cm Flail head.
The wheeled Quatrak fourwheel drive and four-wheel steer machine also uses the new high torque 27hp petrol engine.
“Irus machines have been used for a number of very specialised jobs aside from grass and scrub cutting on slopes,” says Pete Loxston. “These include clearing silt and slurry from drain culvert tunnels on coastal defence systems, removing weed and moss from concrete embankments and cutting weed from river and canal sides with offset scythe mowers.”
PSD Groundscare offers a range of remote control options.
Köppl’s Taurus can be operated in remote controlled or walkbehind mower modes offering a high performing, robust solution for heavy use in tough working conditions and areas that are difficult to access.
Handlebars can be adjusted to the height of the operator and swivelled by 180° without tools using the quick-release lever.

The maximum incline transverse to the slope in remote control operation is 33deg, compared to 20deg in ride-on operation.
STM offers the RoboFlail tracked remote control machines in several models.
RoboFlail One Petrol has a 1.2m cut underslung STM deck for cutting in either direction, while the RoboFlail One Diesel comes with an underslung rough cut flail deck.
Newly added to the range of RoboFlails available from STM in the UK is the RoboFlail 25 that has the facility to operate PTOdriven accessories up to 350kg.
Lighter in weight than larger outfront remote control machines on the market and with new deeper profile herringbone tracks designed to minimise slipping in wet conditions, STM reports a steady rise in sales of the range in recent months.
The RoboFlail One Petrol comes with a UK-built threeblade rotary deck slung directly underneath; this makes for a compact design that’s useful for transporting and planning cutting patterns and can be used for grass 60cm tall, but can also be relied on to leave a neat regular cut down to 7cm, says STM.
RoboFlail mowers can be operated from up to 300m distance via their control box.
Robots march on Highly popular in the domestic sector, robotic mowers also have much to offer in commercial operations.
After successful testing in 2020, the first ever Husqvarna robotic mower with virtual boundary technology, Husqvarna Automower 550 EPOS, will be launched in June 2021.
Husqvarna’s virtual boundary EPOS technology is a highprecision satellite navigation system that delivers an accuracy of 2-3cm, giving the user a new level of flexibility and offers a robust and flexible installation on open areas.
The virtual boundaries also enable aerating and scarifying without breaking physical wires and the user can change boundaries and transport paths from their phone.
With the Precise Area Management feature, several work areas can be defined with different timers and settings, including cutting height. It also makes it possible to create temporary stay out zones.
Operating with low noise levels, it is suitable for golf courses, football stadiums or in urban areas such as city parks. The Husqvarna Automower 550 EPOS can be controlled and monitored through the Automower Connect and Husqvarna Fleet Services apps for enhanced convenience. The reference station can serve multiple machines.
Raymo helps contractors achieve higher standards
More than ever before contractors are being asked to meet higher standards when it comes noise and emissions.
One of the problems with electric mowers is that the weight of dragging an operator (and all the associated hardware) around really negatively impacts on the run time that you can get from the batteries.
By taking the operator off the machine and making it remote control the Raymo mower with wide 104cm (41”) deck can give unrivalled run times from its Lithium battery pack.
The Raymo mower, distributed by ISEKI UK, is powered by this battery pack and operates at very quiet ~68db, ideal for when working in noise sensitive areas.
Thanks to the low centre of gravity the Raymo remote controlled mower can tackle slopes up to 35 degrees, with the operator working safely at a distance. By removing the operator from working on the machine it also eliminates any damaging vibration caused from spending long periods of time each day mowing.
The 4WD offers superior traction no matter what grass is being cut with a neat finish thanks to its easy manoeuvrability and zero turning circles, allowing the operator to be a productive as possible. The low height of the mower at only 51cm (20”) also means it can tidily cut under benches or around low bushes and trees.

Danarm take over supply of Texas pedestrian sweepers
Danarm are very pleased to announce that they can now supply the well-proven Texas pedestrian sweepers. For many years these versatile and powerful machines have been distributed by Sweepfast Ltd with great success. As Sweepfast are gradually scaling down their business in readiness for retirement, the opportunity has arisen for Danarm to expand their product offering of Texas machines.
Danarm have a very long standing relationship with the Danish manufacturing company Texas (who themselves have been around for 60 years), mainly supplying their high quality tillers and rotovators.
There are two models of sweeper, the Texas Handy Sweep and the Texas Smart Sweep. Both of these come in two varieties with the main difference in the brush width; 60 and 70 cm for the Handy Sweep and 80 and 100 cm for the Smart Sweep.
The Texas sweepers are very effective and can be used on all sorts of hard and artificial surfaces all year round.
Some models also benefit from electric start, making it very easy to start the engine in cold weather, for example to clear snow. Both the Handy Sweep and Smart Sweep models have large pneumatic tyres that ensure a firm grip on any surface. The three forward speeds enable the user to operate at the most effective pace for the type of job undertaken.
The brush rotation speed is adjustable on the Smart Sweep to provide an optimal sweeping result - slow for dry leaves and debris, fast for sweeping wet leaves and snow.
Optional accessories, like snow blade and scarifier, are available to make the machines suitable for different applications.

Its powerful HST transmission includes the fatigue busting ‘auto throttle’ system which conveniently links the HST pedal to the engine throttle. Equipped as standard with a 54-inch mid-mounted deck, with cutting heights from one to four inches, mowing heights can be adjusted from the operator’s
seat via the onboard height-of-cut lever which is easy and intuitive to set. Plus, the T194 can also be specified with a front loader, further enhancing the uses for this small but powerful machine. For customers looking to do more, the tractor comes with category one threepoint linkage and 540 rpm rear PTO which allows for numerous rear-mounted attachments to be fitted and enabling it to be used for other tasks such as sweeping and aerating.
This is all topped off with a simple and easy to understand dash panel that gives the operator an overview of all the tractor’s functions, in addition to the overall control layout which has been designed with user operation in mind, for seamless and easy control.

Step into the future with EGO
EGO is challenging many of the misconceptions surrounding battery power – including performance and run time.
The result of this is a range of professional-grade outdoor power equipment which provides the same power as petrol, but without the harmful emissions.
This is a particularly important consideration for users today. As climate change continues to top the agenda, we all have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact – and switching to battery power is one way to do that.
Environmental factors aside, switching to zero emissions tools is just better for users’ health.
To achieve optimum levels of power, performance and usability, our battery technology is critical. Harnessing the potential of Arc lithium technology, EGO batteries lead the way in power tools to provide a reliable, futureproof solution for a broad range of outdoor applications.
Built around a unique design, each EGO battery is designed to deliver 56V, enabling tools to deliver optimum levels of power for extended periods of time to meet exacting user requirements. By delivering this precise level of power, EGO’s tools deliver on performance, alongside other critical considerations – including practical, ergonomic useability.

FIFA’s “Greenest Football Club” chooses Johnsons Sports Seed
Grounds Manager Nigel Harvey has moved from the Stanley Park Training Ground to the main Stadium pitch of Forest Green Rovers FC – along with his Johnsons Sports Seed programme. Having used Johnsons mixtures for near-on 15 years, the club’s renowned eco and environmentally friendly approach means the combination of J Premier Pitch and J 4Turf will become Nigel’s main weapon in the fight against weed ingress and disease.
Nigel moved from Forest Green’s training facility to take up his new position at The New Lawn Ground in June 2020, which he maintains alongside a recently appointed apprentice.
After being described by FIFA as ‘the greenest football club in the world’ and becoming the first UN certified carbon-neutral football club, it’s out with chemicals and in with cultural practicesincluding regular overseeding.
“Johnsons
has proven itself to deliver fantastic resistance to disease, great appearance and plant strength at our training ground and at many of the country’s other leading sports venues, so achieving that is going to be key moving forwards in maintaining surface quality and health at the stadium,” he said.
One of Nigel’s first projects was a major drainage installation programme, the recovery from which saw 20 bags of J Premier
Pitch oversown on The New Lawn pitch. Tetraploid Perennial Ryegrass establishes rapidly under cooler soil temperatures, as low as 4oC. It provides enhanced root development and is proven to deliver exceptional natural genetic disease resistance, reducing the need for costly fungicides by demonstrating exceptional tolerance to a broad range of environmental stresses.
