The growth rate of UK manufacturing production accelerated to a seven-month high in February, aided by stronger domestic demand, fewer raw material shortages and easing global supply chain pressures.
Although input price inflation remained elevated, the latest survey also signalled that cost increases were starting to moderate.
The seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to a three-month high in February. Faster growth of output, new orders and stocks of purchases all helped lift the PMI level in February, o setting the impact of slower job creation and a lessening of supply chain disruptions. Higher new work intakes reflected stronger domestic demand, new customer wins, looser COVID restrictions and improved market conditions.
In contrast, new export business decreased for the fifth time in the past six months, amid reports of Brexit-related issues, ongoing pandemic restrictions in trading partners and the loss of business from long lead times.
Companies continued to guard against a re-emergence of supply chain pressures in February, as highlighted by rising volumes of input purchasing and the further build-up of stocks
of raw materials. Inventories of finished goods also rose slightly for the first time in over two years.
Rob Dobson, Director at IHS Markit, said: “While companies maintain a positive outlook for the year ahead, rising headwinds, especially the intensifying geopolitical backdrop, are ratcheting up near-term risks to demand and confidence.
“Inflationary pressure also remained elevated across the manufacturing sector in February. Companies were hit hard by rising transportation, energy and commodity prices, leading to further increases in selling prices. That said, rates of inflation for input costs and output charges eased further.
“Although this easing may have provided some temporary respite, signs that energy and oil prices may stay high is a further cause for concern.”

A number of pre-existing farm structures have been reconstructed using CUPA PIZARRAS Heavy 3 slate in order to house a new Scottish whisky distillery, Ardross.
CUPA PIZARRAS Heavy 3 slate was specified for use on the project in conjunction with the architect’s design, as it was an ideal match characteristically to the Ballachulish slate used on the original farm buildings. Not only is Heavy 3 visibly similar to traditional Scottish Ballachulish, it is the perfect strength to withstand extreme Scottish weather. Aesthetically, it is a blue black in colour with a slight gritty texture and it also features well-defined parallel lines that are visible on the cleavage surfaces.

Member companies of the Steel Window Association (SWA) have been enjoying a boom in business thanks to the general upturn in activity across the housing market. The W20 window closely replicates the appearance of the older universal suite of sections and can therefore be found providing reliable service from country cottages to dockland warehouses and in commercial, as well as industrial buildings. Not only do the slimline sections offer slender sightlines compared to PVC-U and timber frames, but their strength also provides good security and longterm robustness. In addition, the advancements made in glass technology means that the modern W20 window delivers far better energy performance than their single-glazed predecessors.
A new state-of-the-art business incubation building in Dorset has been completed with the use of an integrated package of Sto thermal insulation and external render and paint products.
The company’s StoTherm Vario and StoTherm Classic insulation systems were specified for the new Innovation Studio at the Arts University Bournemouth, along with StoSilco exterior render and StoColor Dryonic façade paint.
The cost-effective StoTherm Vario system installed onto this unique twostorey building has an efficient single-leaf construction that provides excellent thermal performance whilst also protecting the external wall surface from weathering. A mineral bonding and reinforcing mortar was used to adhesively fix the insulation to the cement particle boards and lightweight steel frame, and the system was able to accommodate the curved substrates which feature in the building’s design.
StoTherm Classic K insulation was also specified for certain parts of the building. A reinforcing coat with embedded reinforcing mesh was applied to the insulation, followed by the StoSilco K1.0 silicone resin render, to add extra protection.
The overall external façade system was completed with the application of Sto’s innovative StoColor Dryonic façade paint in yellow and orange shades. The façade will look exactly the way the architect had planned, and will go on looking that way for many years to come.

wedi’s newest building board, the Vapor 85 was especially developed for challenging applications in areas with very high levels of humidity - such as communal wet rooms that are constantly under a heavy strain, in wellness areas such as steam rooms or as an interior lining of swimming pool halls for example.
As a panel type sealing system - a building board with a pre-integrated vapour membrane barrier - it provides an SD value of 92, making it ideally suited to high chloride environments. Due to its vapour retardant properties, the board can assist in protection of steel frames as well. What is more, it can be directly bonded onto frames without the need of mechanical fixing and so it eliminates risky and laborious sealing measures over penetrations!
Thanks to its excellent thermal insulation properties (0.036 W/mK) and 100% watertightness it guarantees an all-round protection: not only prevents water damage to the structural envelope of the building or maintain interior humidity levels in steam rooms, but also prevents heat loss and can be directly tiled onto.

The HIMACS bathroom vanity and integrated basin brings a fabulous glamorous feel to the Barbican penthouse in London redesigned by Francisco Sutherland Architects. HIMACS in Alpine White was selected for the seamlessly chic bathroom vanity and CB330C integrated round basin. The basin is traditionally a countertop basin, so it is interesting that in this project, the architects and fabricator Deeley Fabrications MK chose to adapt it to create a circular integrated design instead. This not only mirrors the arched window above, but beautifully demonstrates the seamless, join-free qualities of HIMACS, which appear sleek and smooth while creating a hygienic, germ-free finish that is quick and easy to clean.

Howells supplies conservatory roof for mansion refurb
Patent glazing specialist, Howells was selected to manufacture and install a new roof for the ‘Winter Garden’, a large conservatory and part of the formal entrance for Doxford House, a former derelict Georgian mansion.
“I was searching the internet for an appropriate rafter glazing system, and I found Howells,” says Gary Lax, Doxford House site manager. “I was impressed by their skill and capability, and experience with period buildings.”
Howells’s HGR1 aluminium rafter bar system was chosen as a sympathetic yet highperformance solution for the new conservatory roof.
Glazed with 11.5mm clear laminated and toughened shaped glass, the roof required additional support to comply with building regulations. The reinstated C24 timber rafters were laminated to a steel subframe, with the HGR1 aluminium rafter bars fitted on top.
The aluminium rafter bars are powder coated in anthracite grey (RAL 9023). The roof was completed with bespoke pressed metal in the hips and ridges.
“Howells were a pleasure to work with. They were fast, reliable and efficient. We are very pleased with the quality and overall aesthetic of the conservatory roof. It has helped reestablish some of the long-lost grandeur of the Winter Garden.”

New building regulations coming into force this year will require windows to be made even more airtight, says Andy Swift, sales and operations manager for ISO-Chemie.
Building regulation changes will have an unequivocal impact as energy ratings for buildings and property become stricter, and these include energy and ventilation standards for residential and non-domestic buildings that are far better for the environment and fit for the future - higher air and thermal standards for house construction has to be a priority.
Technical innovation through sealing technologies is one way that those responsible for fenestration specification can do more to support greater energy efficiency and mee the requirements of Part L.
Indeed, as sustainability continues to be of paramount concern in the development of low carbon and eco-friendly building projects, we will see technologies such as energy foam tapes, which can add real value during the initial and post construction phases, only grow in importance as the most effective solutions

Thanks to its new centre gasket system and large insulation chambers, the Schüco ADS 65 HD Gen2 can achieve watertightness to Class 7A, air permeability to Class 4 and wind load resistance to Class C2. Its U-value has been reduced from 2.2 in the previous model to 1.4 W/(m2K) ensuring the door system is compliant with the new Part L building regulations due to come into force in June 2022. The ADS 65 HD Gen2 door system also benefits from a barrier-free level threshold with surface water drainage providing trip-free access.

British designed and manufactured, Powermatic controlled, concealed door closers deliver many benefits over surface-mounted door closers and are ideal for use on fire doors in high-rise flats and apartments.
The door closers carry the UKCA mark and have been independently tested and proved to meet the requirements for 60-minute and 30-minute fire doors under BS EN 1634-1. They also benefit from full third-party certification and are the only Certifire jamb-mounted door closer.
Fitting neatly between the door and frame, Powermatic is totally concealed when the door is closed, assuring a clean appearance to the door and interior, enhancing aesthetics and creating a more homely and comfortable environment.
Unlike other jamb-mounted devices, Powermatic door closers facilitate a door’s compliance with the accessibility requirements

A leading fire contractor has installed large quantities of the TITAN Lite™ 120:60, manufactured by TBA FIREFLY™, to create fire barriers above ceiling voids during a major hospital refurbishment. The Site Agent for Ventro, John Roberts, commented: “We have been installing the TITAN Lite™ in many parts of the hospital, including most recently in the ceiling voids over the kitchens. This has been done by fixing metal angles across the soffits and then using the special tape and staples to secure the fabric to it.” FIREFLY™ TITAN Lite™ 120:60 has been developed as a flexible fire barrier to provide compartmentation of larger concealed spaces within different types of buildings including factories, warehouses and railway stations.
