Welcome
Recovery strengthens but concerns remain about materials
The recovery in construction product manufacturing continued in the first quarter of 2021, according to the Construction Product Association’s (CPA) State of Trade Survey.
So far, the pick-up in construction activity has been led by private housing, infrastructure and the repair and maintenance sectors. Nevertheless, a constrained global supply of raw materials and components, as well as the associated increases in prices, is weighing on the outlook for the year ahead.
Both heavy side and light side manufacturers anticipated a rise in product sales over the next year, on balance. The government’s extensions of its job support schemes and housing market stimulus, plus activity on large-scale infrastructure projects, look to have underpinned confidence that the recovery will continue.
The supply of raw materials and components now registers as the primary concern for product manufacturers, however, reflecting global supply issues for inputs such as steel, timber, PVC and chemicals.
Rebecca Larkin, CPA Senior Economist said: “The construction industry continues its V-shaped recovery, resulting in another quarter of increased sales for product manufacturers. This appears to be the
case particularly in private housing, which is experiencing a flow of pent-up demand and policy support from Help to Buy and the stamp duty holiday.
“Infrastructure and the repair and maintenance sectors are also driving activity as work on major projects accelerates and homeowners and commercial occupiers re-assess their use of space.
“Encouragingly, manufacturers expect continued growth over the next year. This risks being held back by bottlenecks in the global supply of raw materials, however, notably in categories where a high proportion is dependent on imports.
“Inevitably, rises in input prices have followed and almost all manufacturers expect this inflationary pressure to persist over the next 12 months.”

Product Highlights
Accessible design in public washrooms
In public places, adapted washrooms must cater for the whole population, not just individuals. Where space is at a premium, separate provision for people with reduced mobility is not always possible. The obvious solution is to specify washrooms with access for everyone regardless of age, level of mobility or independence. This means designing a neutral environment which is discrete, non-stigmatising, aestheticallypleasing and comfortable. Every user will then feel comfortable, whether they are able-bodied, ambulant disabled, wheelchair users or fully dependent on a carer.
Designing for shared use
Good aesthetic design removes the institutional and medicalised aspect of accessible washrooms. DELABIE’s designers are conscious that product appearance is just as important as technical performance. The Be-Line® range of grab bars, shower seats and accessories have sleek, stylish lines that are easy to clean and maintain. Offering a complete range of products in matte white and metallised anthracite provides specifiers with options that complement the décor and provide a good visual contrast with wall finishes.
Adaptability is also important for facilities that provide short-term accommodation
for people with reduced mobility, for example, hotels. Removable shower seats provide a practical solution in rooms where the use changes according to the user. The seat can be installed only when required.
Taking the strain
The primary role of grab bars and shower seats is to support the static weight of any user and assist their movement within the washroom. The elderly or people with reduced mobility can easily lose their balance. If they reach for the nearest hand hold, whether this is a grab bar or riser rail, it must support the additional force required to arrest their fall. The type of fixing is therefore very important. Be-Line® grab bars, shower seats and accessories have robust, concealed fixings which provide the ideal solution. Not only are they completely hidden, they also prevent unwanted removal.
In the event of the user falling, grab bar dimensions also take on greater significance. If the user slips, their arm may get trapped between the wall and the grab bar. By limiting the gap between the bar and the wall, Be-Line® grab bars minimise the risk of fracture. To provide full support the profile of the grab bar or support rail must allow a firm, natural hold. If the bar’s
profile is too angular, the hand cannot grasp the bar properly. Be-line® grab bars have an ergonomic profile comprising a flat front face plus a 35mm diameter to optimise the grip. If the diameter is too small or too large, the forearm muscle is activated rather than the shoulder muscle, placing unnecessary strain on the user.
Attention to detail
When considering design in accessible washrooms, the accessories are easy to overlook. Simple touches such as matching the finish on toilet roll holders, coat hooks and toilet brush can improve the aesthetic. Ergonomics play a significant part too, so installing toilet brushes - with a long ergonomic handle that self-centres when replaced in the holder - can be a small detail that improves the user’s experience.
Specifiers of adapted washrooms in nondomestic environments no longer need to compromise on aesthetics. It is possible to incorporate stylish designs that will withstand intensive use while upholding user safety and hygiene standards.
Customised solutions for washrooms
The new Sanbath Floating Wash Basin with linear drainage is wedi’s answer to the demand for a stylish, on-trend solution with a sophisticated channel drain.

The wash basin is ready for cladding with stone, marble, tiles or with wedi’s Top Wall panel type design surface that can be easily cut to suit. wedi’s Top Line owes its modern design to its seamless nature, organic feel and natural colours: Sahara Beige, Stone Grey, Concrete Grey and Carbon Black with natural stone look.
maintenance and the antibacterial surface ensures that 99% of germs are killed every 24 hours promoting utmost hygiene. So why not add a seamless, antibacterial wall hung toilet cladding from wedi’s Top Line? Illuminating Nordic Copper
A bespoke perforated solar screen, formed from Nordic Blue Living 3 pre-patinated copper, defines the new Senior Learning Centre building at Ravenswood School for Girls on Sydney’s North Shore.
Architects BVN’s design optimises a 6.5m level difference across the site, with extensive glazing to the lower two floors. The upper two floors are differentiated by Nordic Blue Living 3 copper screens, creating a transparent skin enwrapping the building and jettied out over the lower levels. Here, a distinctive repeat pattern of perforations, inspired by the shape of gum tree seedlings found on site, were laser-cut into the copper.
Large openings with deep, copper-clad reveals ‘punch’ through the copper screen enabling clear uninterrupted views and introducing coloured light via glass bricks. Being set in front of the thermal envelope of the building, the copper screens mediate light and thermal penetration, reducing cooling load whilst allowing the interiors to feel light and airy.
BVN Senior Associate Phillip Rowden commented: ‘Nordic Blue Living 3 pre-patinated copper was selected for its striking colour contrast with the masonry surroundings on Campus. High quality materials, such as copper, were selected with high recycled content and low embodied energy – materials that are robust, beautiful and will stand the test of time.’
Nordic Blue is a factory-applied patina with properties and colours based on the same brochantite mineralogy found in natural patinas all over the world. The Nordic Copper range is available from Aurubis, part of the world’s leading integrated copper group and largest copper recycler.

Magply
Magply serves as fireproof sarking for new-build thatched property
Widely specified for its fire resistance and all-round stability in the cladding build-up to apartment blocks as well as a render backer and sheathing board, IPP’s highly versatile Magply boards have been employed by a regional developer as a fireproof sarking board beneath traditional thatched roofing for a development in a beautiful Dorset village. The overall roof construction saw the 12mm Magply boards being nailed down across the main rafters and covered by a breather membrane before battens were secured in the conventional manner, running across the pitches. The authentic reed thatch was then laid up the pitch and shaped around the eyebrow dormers at the roof edge and verges.

New bolt-on air purifier neutralises indoor pollutants
Mitsubishi Electric has launched its new Plasma Quad Connect air purifier for improved indoor air quality. The bolt-on device can neutralise six key indoor pollutants, as well as inhibit 99.8% of SARSCoV-2 [i].
Plasma Quad Connect can be bolted on to Mitsubishi Electric’s air conditioning for both new and existing indoor units across the M Series, Mr Slim and City Multi ranges.
Unique to the manufacturer, Plasma Quad Connect works like an electrical curtain to catch and neutralise even microscopic particles in the air, to significantly improve indoor air quality.
The technology, has been independently tested against SARS-CoV-2 by the Microbial Testing Laboratory, Japan Textile Quality and Technology Centre in Kobe, Japan. Plasma Quad Connect has also been found to be effective against bacteria, dust, viruses, mould and allergens such as pollen, in addition to microscopic particles down to PM2.5.
“There’s a lot of debate around indoor air quality, especially as we look to move back into offices and buildings and good ventilation is the first thing any business should look at,” explains Mark Grayston, Product Marketing Manager for Mitsubishi Electric. “At the same time, air conditioning with good filtration can play a significant role in optimising indoor air quality.”
The level of pollutants inside buildings can be as much as up to five times higher than the outdoors, so being able to remove harmful
particles in the air is essential to occupant wellbeing. With greater regulation pushing for air tightness in buildings, improving indoor air quality is also becoming an increasing priority for businesses.
“Plasma Quad Connect significantly improves indoor air quality, providing peace of mind for the building owner and reassurance for building occupants,” adds Grayston, “It works with new installations but we’ve also designed the device specifically to address existing equipment, making it ideal for hotels, leisure facilities, medical centres, retail outlets and offices.”
The device’s bolt-on capability provides flexibility of installation and offers a more cost-effective solution, which means businesses can avoid costly refits. With regular maintenance, Plasma Quad Connect has the same service life as an indoor unit and it can be installed with wall mounted units, ducted units and ceiling cassettes systems.
“Plasma Quad Connect is automatically powered when the air conditioning is in operation,” adds Grayston. “Our design engineers have not only developed something that is simple to install, it is also easy to use so building owners now have a straightforward and highly effective solution to improving indoor air quality.”
Further details on the system can be found on the company’s website https://les.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/indoor-air-quality

Previous research has demonstrated that the infiltration rate will decrease in the jointing material, but then stabilise with age. Even after allowing for this, the long-term infiltration capability of permeable pavements will normally substantially exceed UK hydrological requirements.
Field tests were recently undertaken by an Interpave member on three projects installed 6-, 17- and 19-years ago respectively. All of the permeable paving sites tested, despite receiving no specific maintenance to improve permeability, still provide infiltration rates that would cope with any likely UK rainfall.
One of the trial projects is the subject of a video including an illuminating interview with the original designer about long-term performance and maintenance. It also highlights how concrete block permeable paving technology will play a key role in

Senior Architectural Systems
Senior blends old and new at Doncaster’s Danum development
With its roots in South Yorkshire and a strong heritage spanning some 30 years, aluminium fenestration solutions provider Senior Architectural Systems has helped make local history by playing a key role in the construction of the new Danum Gallery, Library and Museum in Doncaster.
Designed by leading architects Bond Bryan and built by main contractor Willmott Dixon, the new cultural and learning hub has been created following the sensitive restoration of
four existing buildings. A key focal point of the scheme, and one that looks even more dramatic at dusk, is the restored frontage of a former Victorian school which has been framed by Senior’s slimline SF52 aluminium curtain wall and showcased within a new steel-frame building.
The striking glazed façade, which was fabricated and installed by Senior’s supply chain partner Chemplas Ltd, also features Senior’s robust aluminium commercial doors.

A ‘whole door system’ combining secure locking with failsafe emergency evacuation features has been introduced by GEZE UK to meet rigorous PAS 24 standards. The Slimdrive SL NT PAS 24 System achieves outstanding security – one of the best on the market, whilst still meeting ever-greater demands of building requirements. The system enables 24-hour access control and has been designed and tested for continuous use. With GEZE’s unique, robust locking system that is hidden from view – the Slimdrive SL NT PAS 24 System makes it even harder for opportunist burglars to identify points of access. These security enhancements are fast becoming key features for buildings where security with escape routes are a high priority.
60mm window system specified for major refurbishment of Solihull Borough Council Offices Solihull’s Council offices have been transformed with a major refurbishment of its mid-century office block. The upgrade required alterations and extension works to provide new open-plan space, an atrium and facades. Replacement of the existing windows for new units with high thermal and acoustic performance whilst maintaining the character of the buildings was essential. Kestrel 60mm window system was chosen because of its proven track record in this type of development. The windows are full height with low U-value double glazing throughout, all with high-level PAS24 security accreditation. Units were powder coated to provide a long-lasting, and colour-durable quality finish. Kestrel worked with Tamworth’s WD Group to ensure the successful delivery of the project. 180 Rupert Street, Aston Birmingham B7 5DT T: 0121 333 3575 E: info@kestrelaluminium.co.uk

Kentec Electronics
Kentec launches next generation wireless fire detection system
Kentec Electronics, a leading manufacturer of life-critical control systems, has launched the Ekho wireless fire detection range exclusively to its Kentec Installation Partners (KIP), providing a highly-sophisticated, reliable, convenient and aesthetically pleasing alternative to wired systems.
The launch comes as installers are looking to provide their customers with solutions to prevent the need for costly Waking Watch services, which are being used to mitigate fire safety dangers within buildings with unsafe cladding or fire safety issues. A wireless translator module, which sits at the centre of the system, is hard-wired to the fire alarm control panel loop and communicates continuously with the wireless devices.
Ekho sensors are supplied in three variants: optical; thermal; and multi-criteria, with the optical and multi-criteria sensors featuring adaptive signal processing and double dust traps to prevent false alarms.
Thermal detectors can respond to a fixed temperature threshold or detect a rate of rise in temperature. Wireless sounders, call points and testing kits are also available within the range.
Ekho’s wireless expander modules are used to extend the radio mesh network, increasing the reach and capacity of the overall system. It works by creating a self-healing mesh network, which constantly relays field device signals back to the translator module.
