CPA publishes results of industry consultation on new Code

The Construction Products Association (CPA) has released the results of its industry-wide consultation on the new Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

The 65 page report – downloadable at www.buildingsafely.co.uk – details feedback from 35 trade associations representing the views of many thousands of member firms across the supply chain, and 180 individual provider and user organisations of construction product information, including most of the largest companies in the industry.

The new Code was developed to prevent some of the issues raised in Dame Judith Hackitt’s report ‘Building A Safer Future’, following the Grenfell Tower fire. The CPA was tasked by Dame Judith Hackitt and the Government with tackling the shortcomings identified in Chapter 7 of the report relating to product information.

The findings confirm that the industry welcomes and supports the Code, and considers it a crucial step in the right direction. Comments confirmed that more clarity was needed in some areas of the Code, particularly around the training and competence requirements, and on what exactly was required to comply with the di erent Clauses. The MIG spent a further two months analysing and working through the Code so it reflects the massive amount of expert feedback from the consultation.

Adam Turk, Chair of the CPA’s Marketing Integrity Group and CEO of Siderise says: “We are delighted with the breadth and depth of response received. The published results are slightly later than planned but given the importance of the Code, we wanted to make sure all responses were included in the analysis. Strenuous e orts were also made in reaching out to organisations directly to ensure everyone across the industry had the opportunity to comment.”

“The overwhelming support and constructive feedback has reassured us that the Code is absolutely the right step forward for the industry while also giving us a lot of insightful input to enable the MIG to review the wording of the Clauses in line with these detailed responses,” continues Adam. “Whilst changes have been made around the clarity and detail within the Code, I can confirm that the eleven Clauses remain principally close to those presented in the report.”

Nordic Brown Copper Waves

Nordic Brown Light pre-oxidised copper cladding, in the form of large shingles and vertical fins structuring glazing, creates a strong civic identity for architects JKMM’s expanded and remodelled library in Kirkkonummi, Finland. Nordic Brown Light copper is used in several architectural forms – unified by their materiality – notably, distinctive shingles generating diagonal wave-like patterns. Nordic Brown provides the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment. The thickness of the oxide layer determines the colour of the surface finish, with darker or lighter (Nordic Brown Light) shades. Nordic Brown Light gradually changes over time to a stable dark chocolate brown.

CUPA PIZARRAS

CUPA PIZARRAS helps rebuild Loch Ness visitor centre

CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 slate has been used to rebuild a previously run-down village hall, into An Talla Loch Ness Visitor Centre, a visitor gateway to Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal. The renovation project used Heavy 3 slate for its similarities, aesthetically and characteristically, to the traditional Scottish Ballachulish. As the original slate used on the building was Scottish Ballachulish, CUPA PIZARRAS’ Heavy 3 was selected for its shared characteristics such as its blue-black colour and thickness. Heavy 3 slate is the best choice for repair and replacement of traditional roofs in Scotland as it produced at an extra thickness, 7 - 8mm, meaning it is ideal for combatting Scotland’s inclement weather.

TORMAX concealed door drive creates timeless automatic entrance

Delivering invisible door automation, OAG Ltd specified TORMAX UK to install their iMotion 1401 underfloor operator to a swing door on a Grade II listed building within the Woolwich Works development, Greenwich.

Featuring elegantly arched brickwork, a row of three swing doors give entry into one of the creative community spaces, with one door providing clear and easy access for everyone, thanks to the TORMAX automatic door drive.

The iMotion 1401 is ideally suited to period properties where an externally situated operator would detract from the aesthetics of the building. Concealed in a steel box situated in the floorspace below the door, the Swiss-engineered motor has been precision-designed for a long-life span and exceptional reliability, featuring none of the working parts that generally need replacing, such as gears or brushes.

Simon Roberts, MD for TORMAX, said: “Utilising an invisible method of automating the swing door, such as with an iMotion 1401 operator, is the best solution to ensure the facilities are accessible to all members of the community, without negatively impacting the façade of the heritage building.”

TORMAX offers a complete service from bespoke entrance design to manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance and service.

Mapei

First major UK project for Mapei Purtop Easy proves a success

A full system from Mapei’s Waterproofing Products for Roofing line has been specified for a repair project to the roof of an Academy School in Hertfordshire, covering a total area of 1600m².

Main contractor and installer on the project, Capital Roofing & Building Services, specified Mapei Purtop Easy making it the first major project in the UK to use the system. Prior to the application, the existing roof, which had an old PVC single ply system installed which was reaching the end of its’ useful life and had several issues which had caused leaking to the building for a number of years. Given that the school was in use, the Purtop Easy system was chosen by the contractor due to the ease of application, and how quickly it could be installed.

Prior to the application, the substrate was thoroughly cleaned by removing all dirt and loose material and once prepared, Polyglass PVC Primer was applied by roller. This rapid curing thermoplastic polyurethane primer is ideal for preparing both new and existing PVC single-ply membranes for subsequent bonding or coating. It reactivates the surface of PVC materials, allowing the surface to accept adhesives, pressure sensitive tapes, and for this project, liquid applied waterproofing.

Purtop Easy is a single component polyurethane system that can be mixed with various additives to ease application. In this case, the upstands and details were completed first using Purtop Easy, mixed with Additix P to increase its thixotropy, and to make application to vertical surfaces easier. The upstands and details were also reinforced using glass fibre reinforcement mat, Mapetex FG. The Mapetex FG was embedded in the Purtop Easy and rolled over whilst still wet.

Once the details were completed, Purtop ADY was added to the Purtop Easy for the flat areas. Purtop ADY was formulated by Mapei Research and Development laboratories and when mixed with Purtop Easy it can be applied in just one coat without forming any bubbles. The mixture containing Purtop Easy and Purtop ADY was applied to the entire existing membrane using squeegees and rollers to produce an even, consistent coat. The addition of Purtop ADY not only prevents bubbling but also decreases the curing time speeding up the waterproofing process. Purtop ADY also improves the mechanical properties of the membrane.

The full Mapei Purtop Easy system is fully impermeable, resistant to root penetration, UV rays, and fluctuating temperatures between -40°C and +80°C.

Ecodan renewable heating

Mitsubishi Electric has provided a medical practice in South London with three commercial Ecodan air source heat pumps to deliver renewable heating and year-round comfort.

The owners of Paxton Green Group Practice needed a heating solution that would future-proof the building by reducing both heating bills and carbon emissions, to replace the existing gas boilers.

Ecodan CAHV monobloc air source heat pumps from Mitsubishi Electric were chosen due to their ability to lower running costs and carbon emissions. Patients and staff can now benefit from cost-effective, renewable heating while also enjoying modern levels of comfort.

The heat pumps were installed to deliver 116kW of heat to the building, replacing the two commercial gas boilers. The CAHV models operate in a cascade system, meaning they are able to continually match the heating but only consume the power needed to keep the practice comfortable, whatever the weather.

Andy Booth, Project Manager for Opus Air Conditioning, which installed the system said: “One of the things that amazed me was how quickly the CAHV units heated the

water in the tank. We picked up water temperatures of 70 degrees in less than 30 minutes.”

Opus specialises in the design, supply, installation, service and maintenance of boilers and heating systems, along with heat pumps, air conditioning and ventilation systems. This was the first Ecodan CAHV installation that Opus had carried out and they will be looking at promoting the use of air source heat pumps on future projects. Owing to the practice being a vaccination centre for its local community, the heat pumps had to be installed and the old systems removed in close partnership with the practice and its opening times.

“The team had to be completely flexible so that we could get in around the working hours of the vaccination centre,” added Andy.

Heat pumps are low maintenance and able to produce an average of three kilowatts of heating for every kilowatt of electricity consumed. The practice can now provide a highquality healthcare service for patients whilst also delivering high levels of comfort.

Nordic Copper Forever

For one New Zealand family, ‘forever home’ meant just that when they chose Nordic Copper for the external skin of their new house on the foreshore of Cass Bay, near Christchurch.

Close collaboration between the Green family and their architect, Michael O’Sullivan of Bull O’Sullivan Architecture, characterised the design process. The curvilinear plan wraps around the plot to maximise accommodation and the building’s organic form generates double-height living areas and distinctive spaces.

Although initially conceived as an entirely cedar-clad building, this material was considered to be too complicated and costly, and alternative solutions sought. Many benefits of Nordic Copper were identified, including lighter weight requiring less steel structure, durability with no maintenance and a naturally developing surface appearance.

As Aaron Green commented: ‘the copper will become more beautiful with time and an asset that we never have to touch again. It fits in with our aim to create a building that will last for literally hundreds of years’.

Nordic Standard was used throughout, combining modern long-strip technology and hand-worked traditional details, including copper louvres and a cave-like entrance with subtly inclined walls clad inside and out in copper – a showcase of craftsmanship.

Fellowes

Doncaster Rovers FC leads the way with Fellowes

As part of its roadmap to get players, staff and fans back into its facilities, Doncaster Rovers Football Club has partnered with healthy workspace specialist, Fellowes to install a number of its AeraMax Pro commercial-grade air purification units at the Keepmoat Stadium and its Elite Performance Centre.

Benefitting from a four-stage Advanced HEPA filtration process, the AeraMax Pro air purifiers remove up to 99.99% of harmful viruses, germs, allergens, odours, VOCs and particulates from the air. Of particular note, the AeraMax Pro range has been tested and certified to remove 99.9% or airborne concentration of Human

Coronavirus 229E and the H1N1 flu virus within one hour of operation. Through its unique, patented ‘PureView’ technology, the solution senses when airborne contamination is present in a room, automatically adjusting cleaning to remove the offending particles from the air. What’s more, the system displays this data on a digital screen in real time to provide facility users with maximum visibility and reassurance. Additionally, the solution monitors both air quality and occupancy to automatically adjust its fan speeds accordingly to ensure optimal air hygiene. Doncaster Rovers Football Club has had the solution fitted in several sites located throughout its stadium and training grounds.
