Crucial months ahead for manufacturers as we move towards 2021

The Construction Products Association is forecasting an overall 14.5% drop in output for 2020 but says the signs of recovery from the impact of the global pandemic are promising.

The CPA Autumn Scenarios continue to expect a tick-shaped economic recovery as the most likely outcome, with output for construction rising by 13.5% in 2021 from the sharpest fall on record in 2020.

The CPA points out that the housing market is being given a boost from pent-up demand coming through and transactions being brought forward by both the stamp duty holiday and the end of the first phase of Help to Buy in March 2021.

Along with private housing, the CPA expects the infrastructure sector to be critical for growth. With output not falling as sharply this year as in other sectors due to larger sites making social distancing easier, next year’s growth will capture the start of main works on HS2, plus ongoing work on major projects such as o shore wind, Thames Tideway and Hinkley Point C.

CPA’s Economics Director, Noble Francis, said a critical winter lies ahead for the wider economy.

“The key risks to the construction industry remain a potential second national lockdown and a ‘No Deal’ Brexit, which are illustrated in the CPA’s other scenario,” he explained. “Either would lead to a second dip in the UK economy and construction output.

“A free trade deal agreed in principle with the EU, with the details determined over time, would at least give some degree of confidence for what is still a fragile economic recovery. In addition, construction recovery so far has been highly reliant on government either directly through spending in infrastructure or indirectly through policy stimulus to boost housing.

“Government has an extra responsibility, therefore, to deliver on its announcements and ensure construction recovery does not stall in the next 12 months. We certainly aren’t out of the woods yet.”

Externally, a band of Nordic Brass cladding crowns the curved glass facades. Then, a transparent brise-soleil screen extends down over the tops of glazing and clerestory windows, protecting them from the sun. The sunscreen comprises interlaced Nordic Brass ribbons, adding depth and varying transparency from different viewing angles. It was carefully adapted to the changing curvature of the plan, as well as differing height requirements for solar protection around the building. Internally, perforated panels of Nordic Brass clad ceilings track the gently sloping terrazzo flooring with brass joints.

Paving Gone for a Burton? Not with Resiblock!

Following the successful use of Resiblock at the world-famous FA Academy at St Georges Park, Staffordshire Borough Council did not have to look far for the solution of sealing Station Street, Burton.

A range of Dowsil sealants have been specified for use on the atrium elevations and glazed partitioning within The Sorting Office, a new commercial property in Dublin’s Cardiff Lane. Crucial to the project was the use of Dowsil’s Firestop 700, which was able to meet both the performance and fire rating required. The highest specification sealant product selected was Dowsil Firestop 700 low modulus sealant in Black, which was required for the top two floors.

On these levels, an Optima Technishield 65 system was used, glazed with Pyroguard EI 30-32-2 SWS glass and featuring mitred corners to avoid having to include metal posts at the edges. The completed installation achieves a barrier load rating of 1.5 kN/m.

As winter approaches, improved energy efficiency of the entire window installation, not just the frame, can be provided by the ISO BLOCO 600 range of self-adhesive sealant tapes from ISO-Chemie. Quickly applied by hand around the frame during fitting, ISO BLOCO ONE 600 are energy rated weather tight thermal and acoustic tapes which reduce heat loss and noise ingress to a U value better or equal to the frame. This assures property and homeowners that a comprehensive ‘A’ rated installation can been completed rather than just an ‘A’ rated window supplied. The tapes can can accommodate a temperature range of -30° to +90° and is impermeable to driving rain with a minimum of 600 Pa, making it one of the best performing tapes in its class.

Amongst the changes is the upgrading of the accommodation units to en-suite rooms. The Kinedo range from Saniflo was recommended as a cost-effective, time saving, yet contemporary solution and a demonstration was offered to showcase the speed and simplicity of installation.

A technical engineer visited site and built a temporary unit for the J&E Woodworks team to see and, suitably impressed, 25 Kinedo cubicles were ordered including 17 Eden quadrant and 6 corner units; each featuring sliding doors. Kinedo cubicles are supplied as a complete package and typically take less than half a day to install.

A warehouse floor in Barnsley was transformed using Bradite’s new single pack water-based floor paint, DP9 Floor-It. The 1200 sq metre power floated, porous concrete floor had been penetrated with oil so required preparation for painting with Bradite’s TD39 Industrial Degreaser. Diluted with warm water, the solution was used to scrub the floor. Once dry, the floor was lightly abraded to provide a key for the Bradite DP9 Floor-It coating. Four coats of the high-performance, water-based acrylic floor paint were applied by roller by a team of two. Completing the task in two phases meant the building could remain in use. Once the surface was fully cured, it was again able to withstand fork-lift traffic. Thanks to DP9’s quick recoat time of just 1 hour, it was possible to apply two coats in a day.

Wembley Pink MSCP is part of an extensive regeneration project that will also include new housing, shops, venues etc. The multi-storey car park has been built to serve the needs of the national stadium and can provide parking for 290 coaches and 730 cars. Adveco L70 ASHP For Hot Water With 70% Less CO₂

Commercial hot water and heating specialist Adveco extends its range of commercial air source heat pumps (ASHP) with the introduction of the Adveco L70. This highcapacity air-to-water monobloc heat pump is designed for the UK climate providing hybrid domestic hot water (DHW) and heating.

Rated 70kW for typical UK operation at 5°C but climbing to a maximum 90 kW from a single compact unit, and with a seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP) as high as 4.08 the L70 is perfect for large scale commercial applications and can operate as part of a cascade installation for projects demanding greater capacity. The L70’s dual compressor configuration allows for staged start-up to limit current draw and gives the flexibility to drop to half output under low load conditions.

With ASHPs offering greater efficiencies in low-temperature systems, the hightemperature demands of commercial DHW applications can be a challenge. Achieving working flow temperatures up to 60°C, the L70 supplies preheat for hybrid applications composed of combinations of plate heat

exchangers, buffer vessel, with calorifiers, gasfired boilers or direct-electric water heating providing essential additional heat to meet commercial requirements.

The L70 will dramatically lower CO₂ when analysed using the carbon intensity figures from the new SAP10.  Compared to gas-fired systems the carbon emissions are reduced by around 70%, when using the SCOP of 3.47 measured at 55°C flow temperature (Ecodesign warm European temperature zone with a reference design temperature of 2°C).

As a slim and highly efficient thermal multi-foil insulation for use in roofs, walls and floors, Alumaflex® is ideal for barn or loft conversions and in general timber frame construction.
