Welcome
Strong construction demand but supply hit by perfect storm
The Construction Products Association (CPA) has revised construction output growth up for 2021 from 13.7% to 14.3% since its previous Forecasts, but also revised down growth for 2022 from 6.3% to 4.8% in 2022.
With more buoyant demand so far in 2021, supply chain constraints are expected to hinder growth over the remainder of the year and into 2022.
There is real doubt as to whether there is su cient capacity in the whole construction supply chain to enable demand. Skills shortages, product availability and cost inflation, HGV driver shortages, the impacts of energy cost rises, and delays at ports are all expected to make up an unprecedented number of constraints on growth for the months ahead.
Commenting on the supply chain issues, CPA Economics Director, Noble Francis, said: “Demand continues to be remarkably strong across the construction industry but supply issues are hindering growth and will continue to do so in the medium-term. The biggest impacts of the supply constraints are on the small construction firms.
“Large contractors and major house builders have a greater certainty of demand over the 12-18 month horizon and are better able to plan and purchase in advance as well as adjust to changing economic situations.
“Small firms, however, are more focused on flexibility and have less visibility over demand going forward. Plus, they have less ability and resource to plan and purchase in advance. They often turn up at builders merchants on the day to purchase what they need for that day or the next few days.
“As a result, it leaves their business more exposed to availability issues and their cash flow exposed to sharp rises in costs.”

Brett Martin
Brett Martin’s Cascade makes the grade
When it came to the specification of a replacement rainwater system for a 19th century school building, Brett Martin’s Cascade Cast Iron Style Rainwater System offered authentic detailing, longterm performance and ease of installation without compromising the integrity of the building. The specification of the Cascade rainwater system comprised 112mm Roundstyle Gutters and 68mm Round Downpipes with Tudor Rose Hoppers, all in Classic Black and providing the authentic detailing and finish they were looking for. This was complemented by the Cascade 110mm Push-Fit Soil System to provide a complete look which was architecturally sympathetic to the 19th century building and the original detail of the previous cast iron system.

A. Proctor Group
Old Ford car site converted into energy efficient affordable homes
A four-acre site, originally part of the Ford Dagenham car plant, will provide a new home for 325 residential units in a series of five to ten storey apartment buildings. A total of 15,000m2 of the Wraptite® airtightness membrane from the A. Proctor Group features in the design. Wraptite is the only self-adhering vapour permeable air barrier certified by the BBA and combines the critical properties of vapour permeability and airtightness in one self-adhering membrane. Including the Wraptite System within the facade design helps ensure “as-designed” performance, narrowing the gap between as-designed and actual energy performance and reducing the likelihood of potential failures to meet required airtightness levels.

Hunter Douglas Architectural
The metal ceiling specialist
Since Hunter Douglas developed its first metal ceiling 60 years ago, it has introduced a wide range of styles that can be used in almost all types of building. Business Development Manager Pieter van Rees says these new shapes and styles mean there has never been more choice for architects and designers. Because acoustics are crucial in a design, the ceilings can be manufactured with micro-perforations and an acoustic non-woven backing can be added to the panels as these help to absorb the sound energy. Hunter Douglas’s metal ceilings are guaranteed to last for years and because they are made from recyclable materials, they are also more environmentally friendly. As well as standard colours, all metal ceilings can be finished in RAL colours, as well as unique metallic hues. Architects and designers can also commission a custom design.

Keystone Lintels
Keystone brick slip feature lintels make an entrance
The superior aesthetics, offsite craftmanship and precision of Keystone Lintels’ pioneering patented brick slip system has ensured the façade of a luxury apartment complex in Buckinghamshire is in keeping with its exemplary architectural design. Keystone’s technical team designed Brick Slip Feature corbelled and full arch lintels which were manufactured in a factory-controlled environment, negating the need for complex brick cutting on-site. The one-piece lintel design solution required exacting dimensions to avoid any conflict with the proposed stone sitting at the end of each arch bearing. 3593mm upper coursing span and 3143mm lower coursing span measurements were essential for the seamless installation of the prominent entrance. Junckers
Built for disassembly
The
waterfront location is deemed under threat from rising water levels in the future, which lead Adept Architecture to create a building that can be taken apart and rebuilt or easily reused/ recycled. The building uses as few sustainable materials as possible, among them Junckers Textured Oak two-strip hardwood flooring. The structure is based on simple tectonic principles, completed with mechanical joints only. As far as possible, building materials used in the construction are not mixed, reducing the volume of waste considerably in comparison to similar constructions. Norton Clipper squashes construction equipment shortages trend with a new range of compactors
Abrasives specialist Norton Clipper has launched its brand new range of compactors with the aim of working against the equipment shortage currently facing the UK construction industry. The unfortunate combination of Brexit and COVID has seen merchants in all industries experience shortages in materials, equipment and supplies. However, since the housing market boom and the government’s announcement of its £27 billion roadbuilding programme in March of last year, construction equipment – and compactors in particular – are in high demand. To combat this, Norton Clipper’s new launch is available specifically for the UK market.
Designed to tackle soil, clay, asphalt, mixed stone and pavers with ease, the range includes two types of compactors: the CFP (forward only) and CRP, which can compact a larger surface area and be operated in both forward and reverse directions with minimal effort from the user. The range also includes a CR16 upright rammer that is perfect for trenches and smaller projects.
Specifically designed with the operator in mind, Norton Clipper’s compactor range offers easy manoeuvrability and a flawless finish. Foldable handles and removable transport wheels provide easy storage and minimise the space required in transit, while lifting and handle points are easily accessible to prioritise safe handling.
The machine’s wide opening plastic water tank makes filling the container quick and easy while on site, and the use of plastic helps to avoid the risk of rust, which can be a threat to metal tanks. Metal cowlings and guards protect the compactors to withstand knocks and bumps – increasing durability and decreasing maintenance costs for hire merchants.
Available in plate width sizes of 360mm, 400mm, 420mm and 500mm, the range is available in both petrol and diesel models, with a maximum compaction depth starting from 15-25cm, increasing to 30-40cm for the reversible range. Additional rubber pads are available for the compactor, which can be used to gently compact pavers when attached to the plate.
A wide sprinkler bar ensures that water covers the full width of the plate, preventing tarmac from sticking and reducing the additional labour involved in soaking the site while the compactor is in operation. Meanwhile, the shut-off water tap prevents any water flow or spillage while the machine is in transit.
Despite the impressive centrifugal power of up to 21kN, the machine ensures low hand-arm vibration levels, prioritising operator health as well as a smooth finish.
STO system upgrades acoustic environment for Raphael
Court
The StoSilent Distance acoustic ceiling and wall system from Sto was specified for the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance and it now creates the perfect acoustic environment for a high-profile display of Renaissance art treasures.
The V&A in London recently completed a landmark refurbishment of its Raphael Court where the StoSilent Distance system is now installed.
When it came to specifying the acoustic system, project architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios were looking for a solution which was lightweight, as they would be adding extra weight to the existing building. It also had to be able to accommodate the different angles and curves of the vaulted ceiling.
“The StoSilent Distance system had recently been used on a successful project at V&A Dundee, so that set a positive precedent,” adds Feilden Clegg Bradley’s Matt Somerville. “Sto worked very closely with us to identify the most effective solution from an acoustic point of view. They also provided large-scale samples which we could view on site to test the colour and finish alongside other materials used in the gallery.”
The StoSilent Distance system provides outstanding acoustic attenuation, and the boards were finished with StoSilent Décor M.
Materials Market has launched its online building materials marketplace – a brand new, collaborative model promising a new ‘win-win’ route to market for merchants and distributors.
Already supporting a large network of supplier partners, the Materials Market website launched in November 2020, Materials Market is the new kid on the block for building material sales. It represents an innovative digital solution to ease supply chain issues and enabling transparent, simple customer transactions for suppliers across the UK.
Materials Market was founded in August 2019 following a preseed funding round of £130k from angel investors, further bolstered by a £1.5m raise from Fuel Ventures in a seed funding round in September 2021.
The top online marketplaces in the world transacted over £1.47 trillion in 2019, accounting for 58% of global online sales, a statistic that is growing rapidly, particularly in light of the pandemic. Samuel Hunt, Co-Founder & CEO at Materials Market, explains how his solution will bring this sea-change to the construction industry:
“The sector has been slower than others to move to a digitalfirst approach, and so we wanted to create a one-stop shop that connects customers and suppliers in real time, which would allow for better prices and faster deliveries, plus a wider market for distributors and merchants than their bricks and mortar stores.
“The past 18 months has put a huge strain on the sector in general, with many proactive suppliers rapidly rethinking their routes to market. Our online platform allows suppliers to leverage the popular new marketplace model and benefit from steady growth potential.”

Copper in the Woods
Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper and larch cladding together define the natural character of a contemporary home, nestling amongst the treetops on the Island of Hirvensalo, part of the Turku archipelago in Finland.
Locally-based Sigge Architects reconciled their client’s need for a permanent working home but enjoying the essential characteristics of a Finnish Summerhouse with its tradition of respect for nature. The three-storey building was designed as a deceptively simple modern structure with clean lines. A restrained palette of natural materials enables it to sit comfortably in its elevated location within a gently sloping forest. The Upper Level is conceived as a

distinct copper-framed ‘box’ mass, oversailing the recessed Entrance Level ‘pedestal’. Here, Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper was chosen, structured with vertical seams. Sigge Architects CEO Pekka Mäki explained: ‘The Nordic Brown will gradually age with dignity within the forest’. Nordic Brown provides the same oxidised brown surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment, with darker or lighter (Nordic Brown Light) shades of brown.
A growing series of ‘copper stories’ – building studies exemplifying the best in contemporary architecture – showcase the diversity of surfaces, forms and applications available with Nordic Copper today.

How retrofitting GSM technology ensures secure, efficient access control
Introducing new technology into older housing stock is an effective solution for housing professionals who are seeking to tackle operational inefficiencies and rising maintenance bills - and enhance the tenant experience. However, it’s often the case that replacing ageing devices is costly, while finding the correct system for every residence can be challenging.
For access control, the latest wireless technology ensures this doesn’t need to be the case. With GSM – the same technology that powers mobile phone calls – plastic handsets and cabled intercoms become unnecessary. Instead, tenants can control access to their residence by using their landline or preferred digital device.
And as the technology is all wireless, retrofitting GSM-powered intercoms and access control systems takes significantly less time than traditional, wired systems, with no need for tenant disturbance.
For housing professionals, GSM-enabled devices can also be linked to remote online management systems, so they can oversee

Hunter Douglas Architectural
Hunter Douglas Architectural goes for gold at former Olympic village
Passing an air tightness test was essential when Hunter Douglas Architectural was specified to provide ceilings for apartments being constructed within East Village on the site of the Olympic Village in Stratford, East London.
Comprising two towers of 26 and 31 storeys, and two ten-storey pavilions, they have merged into a single residential development connected by an inhabited sky-bridge.
Hunter Douglas Architectural, the international architectural products company, was asked to supply veneered ceiling panels for many of the
corridors in both towers – in total, 1840m2 –but the tiles had to pass stringent air tightness tests before they could be commissioned.
It went on to supply European oak tiles with nano perforations, which provides excellent acoustic qualities and does not compromise the visual aesthetic of the ceiling, and they were installed in the Modern style semiexposed grid style.
The easy installation system means each panel can be easily removed downwards and allow full access to the plenum with a simple push.

Domus Ventilation
Domus Ventilation Revit® BIM Files
Now Available as Direct Download from www.domusventilation.co.uk
Domus Ventilation, manufacturer of marketleading mechanical ventilation systems that save energy and improve indoor air quality, is pleased to announce that its full range of Revit BIM (Building Information Modelling) files can now be downloaded directly from its website, www. domusventilation.co.uk, free of charge.
BIM is a government driven shared knowledge resource, providing all of the information about every component of a building, in one easy to access place. Autodesk Revit is a BIM software for architects, structural engineers, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers, designers and contractors. It is used to create co-ordinated, consistent and complete modelbased designs that drive efficiency and accuracy across the project lifecycle, from conceptual design, visualisation and analysis to fabrication and construction. Using BIM data reduces the risk of mistakes or discrepancies at an early stage, making for more cost-effective, safe construction.
The Domus Ventilation BIM library features an extensive array of products, including energy saving, whole house Mechanical Ventilation
with Heat Recovery (MVHR) appliances, as well as award winning Radial semi-rigid duct systems and its full range of rigid ducting and accessories, which incorporates Domus Thermal duct insulation and duct sound attenuators.
BIM ‘Object’ data on Domus Ventilation products includes detailed information such as product properties, geometry, visualisation data and functional data that enables the ‘object’ to be positioned and behave in the same manner as the product would in-situ. Airflow rates, for example, can be set at each grille or air valve, allowing engineers to easily and more accurately estimate pressure losses and velocities within the ductwork, which isn’t possible using other design packages, such as AutoCAD. Product dimensions are automatically calculated to ensure it fits into the desired design space and even the correct amount of product required is calculated within BIM to prevent product wastage. In addition, BIM enables parts to be automatically scheduled during the design process, for speed and maximum convenience.
