The GMA Awards relaunch for 2022
Following the launch of the Grounds Management Association’s Hall of Fame, the association relaunches the GMA Awards (previously IOG Awards) with the ceremony taking place this November at The Vox, Birmingham.
Last year, the awards were on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic, which gave GMA members and the industry the opportunity to focus on challenging maintenance diaries.
In 2022, the GMA Awards hosts 19 categories to cover the broad spectrum of its members, including the Volunteer Sports Grounds Team/Individual of the Year Award, the Best Environmental and Sustainability Impact Award and the renowned Alex R
Millar Award. With turf-care quickly growing its media presence and public interest, the GMA has also looked at ways to make the awards more accessible to those at all levels of grounds care or turf management, from grassroots to professional stadiums.
Organisers of SALTEX are also looking for the best speakers in the grounds management industry to showcase their knowledge at the show, which will take place at the NEC, Birmingham on 2 and 3 November 2022.

It was good to be back at Harrogate last month and good to be back at BTME.
Visitor numbers might well have been down on the traditional late January turn-out and the buzz that surrounds the exhibition halls and town itself might not have quite been the same, but staging the re-arranged show was an important step and exactly what the wider industry needs moving forward.
Many exhibitors talked about quality rather than quantity as regards visitors to their stands and along with BIGGA’s education seminar programme and the other official functions taking place during the course of the week, BTME has helped to kick-start some momentum for the remainder of 2022.
As BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said after the event, the greenkeeping industry needs greater support and greater recognition for the efforts of the countless professionals that it employs during the pandemic to maintain the highest possible standards. The same is true for the wider industry. The economic, social, health and well-being contributions the industry as a whole continues to make the UK cannot be under-estimated.
BTME 2022 proved that is the case for both the greenkeeping and turfcare sectors and moving forward through the year we have the 2nd SAGE outdoor event, SALTEX 2022 in early November and other national and regional shows to bring the industry together again. The industry needs to support such events as they do help provide a boost for everyone who plies their trade in the groundscare, landscaping, amenity and greenkeeping sectors. This month we celebrate the Best of British in a special supplement highlight the diverse nature of the wider industry.
Our industry continues to represent the best that Britain can offer and elsewhere we also have special spotlights on Sports Turf Management, Pedestrian & Remote Mowers, hard and soft landscaping and the latest product news and case studies.
Hopefully, BTME 2022 will signal the start of a Spring and Summer where we do start to meet up more regularly again. We look forward to seeing you out there on our travels.

Grassroots football facilities to be regenerated through government investment
Protecting Liverpool’s green spaces for good
Liverpool City Council have committed to protect 100 parks, totalling over 1,000 hectares, which can never be built on or lost to development.
One hundred and sixteen projects across England will receive funding to create and improve pitches, changing rooms and pavilions, so that more local communities can access highquality facilities.
Projects have been chosen for their ability to deliver improved facilities in deprived areas, support multi-sport use and increase participation among currently under-represented groups, including women, girls and disabled players.
The announcement follows a joint ‘Expression of Interest’ submitted to UEFA by the Football Associations of England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
The governments of the UK, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have confirmed their support for the
EOI submission and, given the Northern Ireland Executive is currently not meeting formally, officials there continue to observe the process closely.
The funding, combined with contributions from The FA, Premier League, clubs and other local partners, will improve the quality of community facilities, bring people together to enjoy playing sport in their local area, regenerate communities and enhance social cohesion.
A total of £39 million will be provided for football facilities in England this financial year, out of a total of £230 million set to be invested to help to build or upgrade up to 8,000 quality pitches across the UK over the next four years. The funding will also support the construction or refurbishment of clubhouses, changing facilities and community buildings.
Scotland will also receive a total of £2 million, Wales £1.3 million and Northern Ireland £700,000.
UK Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said: “We are committed to improving access to high quality sports facilities for the underprivileged and underrepresented across England.
“From artificial grass pitches in Sefton, Newcastle and Southampton, to great changing facilities in Blackpool and Solihull, and grass pitch improvements in Chelmsford, Harrogate and Ipswich, this investment will ensure more people can enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of these facilities in their local communities.”

Once completed, Liverpool will be the first city in the UK where every resident has a legally protected green space within a ten-minute walk of home. The Council’s commitment ensures the positive benefits of green spaces will always be available for the city’s residents.

Now Fields in Trust are inviting local businesses and the wider community to support the programme. Over the last two years we have all relied on our local green spaces more than ever; parks are a vital part of the local environment helping us rebalance and recover.
Alongside their value for health and wellbeing, urban parks increasingly have a role to play in environmental improvements including air quality and biodiversity.
Fields in Trust Chief Executive Helen Griffiths said: “We have seen a major shift in the way people talk about, visit and value their local parks.
“Our parks have provided a lifeline throughout lockdown and now, coming out of the pandemic, we can all play our part to make sure local green spaces will remain a healthy part of the local environment contributing to our wellbeing, our community connections and mitigating the impact of climate change.
“We are working with the city council to ensure all Liverpool parks will be protected and available for the whole community, for future generations.
“As a charity we need support from the communities and businesses in Liverpool to help turn this vision into a reality.”

Perennial research flags concern for health and wellbeing
The findings of research, commissioned by Perennial in 2021 to develop an understanding of health and wellbeing across the horticultural community, have shown that 81% of people generally feel good about their health.
However, many are facing significant physical and mental wellbeing challenges that do not equate with good health.
The findings are based on the combined results of Perennial’s Health & Wellbeing Survey (2021), the Horticultural Labour Market Research (2021) and the Wellbeing Kiosk Results (2019).
The number of people in the industry with poor mental
wellbeing is above the UK’s national average - 85% of people’s mental wellbeing was found to be poor or below average.
Over three quarters of people are experiencing aches and pains, with back and joint pain being prevalent - 78% of respondents had experienced back and joint pain in the last six weeks.
Thirty-three per cent only seek help when they believe that they’re really ill. Yet, a delay in seeking care could lead to, a delay in diagnosis and treatment, living in pain for longer and/or a deterioration in their condition.
Julia Hayne, Director of Services at Perennial, says: “Through the
inaugural Horticulture Wellbeing Survey (2021), Labour Market Research (2020) and Wellbeing Kiosk results (2019) we are building a picture of the health and wellbeing of the industry. There is a significant gap between individuals’ perceived and actual state of health and wellbeing. More awareness around good health and wellbeing is needed to prevent serious problems in the future.”
The research provides the industry with an insight into the causes and impact of poor wellbeing. It highlights how individuals across the sector feel about their health and the issues that are important to them which include their physical and mental wellbeing, finances, careers and training.
To truly build better futures for the whole horticultural community, Perennial encourages a shared understanding by the industry of the real and perceived challenges people are facing.
As well as collaboration to develop sustainable solutions which support the key recommendations:
• Help the horticulture community to understand good health and wellbeing
• Encourage the horticulture community to build healthier lives and adopt positive routines
• Build a culture of wellbeing
• Develop our knowledge base

EGO celebrate record-breaking growth with new launches for 2022
EGO, the specialist in batterypowered outdoor power equipment, is aiming for another record-breaking year, building on the growing demand for battery-powered tools and equipment with the launch of three key new products.
Steve Roskell, Marketing Director EMEA at EGO, said: “EGO is at the forefront of a technological revolution in outdoor power equipment. Demand is growing for tools that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and enhance working conditions for the operator with no sacrifice in the performance of the tools. We are further expanding our product range in 2022 to continue to meet this surging demand.”
The EGO Z6 is the company’s first zero-turn ride-on mower and is unique in the industry, as it uses the same interchangeable batteries that power the rest of EGO’s garden tool range. By combining up to six of EGO’s proven 56V ARC Lithium™ platform batteries, the Z6 delivers the same power and performance as a 22HP petrol ride-on mower, cutting up to two and a half acres on a single charge with 6 x 12Ah batteries.
The zero turning radius Z6 features three driving modes and four-blade speeds, with easily adjustable cutting height positions between 2.5cm and 10cm. Operators can also choose to collect the clippings; side-discharge or mulch them.
Alongside the Z6, EGO is expanding its Power+ range of chainsaws with the CS1610E. Combining high torque and chain speed, it is designed to easily cut through branches and medium-sized logs up
to 40cm wide. The chain tensioner has been improved and streamlined to make flush felling cuts possible, and auto chain tensioning maintains proper tension during use or tool-free chain tensioning for easy set up and adjustment.
The oil filler cap can also be opened and closed without the need of tools, while the saw lies flat on its side when being filled with oil, removing the need for awkward balancing acts. Completing the new tool range for 2022 is the LB7650E leaf blower, offering a run time of up to six hours on a single battery charge. With 1,300m3/h output when in Boost mode, it is by far the industry’s most powerful handheld blower, outperforming even the leading petrol-powered blowers.
It features a thumb selector for variable speed and airflow control, making it even easier to use single handed. They are supported by a new 12Ah battery and Professional MultiPort charging case. The 12Ah battery is the largest in the range, increasing battery run time between charges by up to 20% across all EGO products.
EGO’s Professional MultiPort Charging Case will charge any combination of up to six EGO portable batteries at the same time, making it ideal for professional users. It works with the industry’s fastest charger – a typical 60Ah setup will charge in just three hours. EGO’s intelligent power management system replenishes batteries with the lowest level of charge first, then brings all the batteries up to full charge at the same rate.
LTP launches new ECOPROTEC sealer
LTP has introduced a new water-based impregnating sealer for outdoor paving.
ECOPROTEC External Paving & Stone Sealer is designed to protect all types of natural stone and concrete in outdoor settings.
Like all ECOPROTEC treatments, it’s designed for the landscape and contract market, and is manufactured in the UK. Key benefits include high performance and high coverage rates, combined with low odour and low VOC for a safe, eco-friendly treatment.
ECOPROTEC External Paving & Stone Sealer is suitable for smooth, honed, rough cut and polished paving.
It’s applied to clean, dry surfaces - using a light pressure sprayer, foam roller
or paint brush – and the finish created is natural, breathable and subtly enhances the colour of the paving.
Treatment provides protection against staining and strongly repels water, oil and grease. When applied before grouting, it also protects against fixing residues and promotes easy cleaning.
Other new solutions for outdoor paving include ECOPROTEC Porcelain Tile Protector – a water-based barrier for unpolished, textured surfaces. This new treatment is designed to protect tiles from staining and it allows easy removal of residues from cement and resin-based jointing compounds, as well as stubborn organic matter.

Perfection in external porcelain tile
The owners of this property and their architect selected top quality porcelain tiles for this pool terrace, but they also wanted to be sure the pointing would not discolour or stain the expensive tiles, and that the grout was durable in the narrow >3-5mm joints between these larger format tiles.
They had seen other people’s quality porcelain terraces effectively ruined by poor quality pointing, including cement grouts that initially left a lot of residue and then stained easily from spillages; or ‘brush-in resin’ grouts that blew out after jet-washing, which is essential to keep external porcelain tile paving in pristine condition.
Fortunately, their architect found GftK’s vdw 815+ Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape, which is ideal for narrow joints and porcelain, plus it is 2-part epoxy resin based, so nonstaining and highly resistant to jet washing – the perfect solution.
GftK’s vdw 815+ is unique and ‘state of the art’, specifically designed for narrow joints in quality porcelain and prestige natural stone paving.
Application is quick and easy by wet-slurry techniques, which means no waiting for dry weather to prepare, grout, harden, and get the pool open for use.

Ventrac in the Premier League
Premier sporting facilities require premium quality equipment and Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City football clubs are two clubs that have seen the benefits of the Ventrac all-terrain compact tractor and a selection of attachments.
Both magnificent training centres feature much hard landscaping including pathways, carparks and hard standing areas outside their maintenance facilities.
One attachment, the Power Broom, has proved particularly beneficial at both venues. Along with the Power Broom, Leicester City’s package included the Ventrac 4500 all-terrain compact tractor in dual-wheel configuration, a Contour mowing deck and Trencher.
John Ledwidge, Head of Sports Turf and Grounds said: “It’s all about quality presentation and the versatility of the Ventrac helps us achieve the high standards demanded here.
“The Power Broom does a great job on the pathways and carparks and we’ve used the Trencher to insert drainage bands in some particularly wet areas of the golf course.
“The Contour deck helps us maintain the numerous banks and sloped areas around the complex, including ‘Mount Vardy’, the nickname we’ve
given to a landscaped area of unused spoil from the original build. It is also used on the golf course where its articulated design prevents scalping.”
Darren Baldwin, Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates at Tottenham, has absolutely no regrets about purchasing his Ventrac package to help maintain the 77-acre Premier League training complex.
“Everything we do is done to the highest standard, be it playing surfaces, general turf maintenance or the presentation of the complex as a whole,” he said.
The Ventrac just adds to the efficiency of our fleet in a perfect way; it’s biggest attribute is its versatility. It’s one tractor but there’s a whole range of applications that it can be used for.
“We have large areas of hard landscaped areas at the training centre and the Power Broom has been fantastic. We also use it to relieve the compaction of the rubber crumb infill and is an integral part of our synthetic turf maintenance programme.
“Like our mower attachments and trencher, the broom is quick and easy to change and when not in use they are freestanding, which also helps with the yard management of our equipment.”

Green-tech launches new SoluForm
Green-tech has added SoluForm MSE Soil Filled Bagwork to its extensive landscaping supplies portfolio. SoluForm MSE Soil Filled Bagwork are mechanically stabilised earth (MSE) geotextile bags used for the construction of earthworks such as riverbanks, slopes and walls.
They are delivered prefilled with Green-tree topsoil which negates the need to hand fill the bags yourself and ensures a consistent and quality-controlled product.
Purchasing and Product Development Manager Chris Swan comments, “I am delighted to add SoluForm MSE Soil Filled Bagwork to our product offering. It is a cost effective, environmentally safe and ecologically-beneficial form of riverbank, slope, or wall construction. It’s a really simple yet clever idea and is ideal for landscape contractors and designers who have riverbanks or slopes in
their schemes because you don’t need any specialist machinery or skilled labour. The bags are held together and prevented from moving by fixing spikes or plates between the rows of bags.”
The geotextile bags, coupled with the Green-tree topsoil inside the bags allow for the establishment and promotion of vegetation growth, both on and inside the bagwork. This greens up the bagwork to improve its appearance, strengthens the structure and improves both riverbank habitat and biodiversity. Typically, vegetation is added by a technique called Hydroseeding.
For bagwork underwater, carbonneutral concrete filled hand placed bagwork is used to form a secure and sound foundation or base onto which the soil filled bagwork can then be placed.
Andrew Mountain from SoluForm adds, “We are
proud to offer our new soil filled MSE bagwork product and look forward to supplying Green-tech with a range of competitively priced products,
which is backed up with our technical expertise and extensive bagging capabilities”

Landscapers should promote sustainable drainage
Landscapers are being urged to promote sustainable practices when it comes to water management in gardens.
With the Association of Professional Landscapers (APL) already creating ambitious targets to make water management more sustainable, ACO believes landscapers have an opportunity to promote more environmentally friendly practices when designing gardens.
The APL has recently introduced a target for its members to deliver an aggregate 40% increase in the proportion of water that comes from non-mains and re-used water sources, such as rainwater and run-off capture.
According to ACO, responsible water management is going to be key for landscapers, as the recent surge in demand for home improvements looks set to continue.
Mastenbroek enjoys a resurgance of interest
According to ACO, one way this can be achieved is through sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), which aim to efficiently manage surface rainfall run-off by controlling the rate and volume, relieving pressure on sewerage systems, and mimicking natural drainage. ACO recently launched a guide for sustainable design, supporting landscapers implement best practice to support the environment.
Fountain transforms lake and attracts visitors
Darlington Council has recently acquired two Sunburst aerating fountains from Otterbine for the lake in the town’s historic South Park, and is reaping the benefits of clean, healthy water and decorative spray patterns which are attracting visitors and bringing new life to the park.
The Green Flag Award Victorian park has something for everyone, from a multi-use games area to an aviary, café, bandstand, skate park, bowling green, green gym, childrens’ play area – and now, it also has two new Otterbine fountains, much to the public’s delight.
The purchase was made via Otterbine distributor Reesink Turfcare and the installation carried out by pond and lake specialist Clearwater Pond and Lake Management.
hoping to make South Park even more inviting by getting rid of the algae in the lake and elevating its presentation.
“A colleague of mine knew someone who had an Otterbine fountain installed and recommended it to us,” Brian explains.
“The process was absolutely fine. Reesink was great with the finance and arranged for the contractors to come in and do all the electrical work. The fountains were up and running within two days.”
up of corrosion-resistant and durable stainless steel.
After purchasing and having the fountains installed, Brian has noted a big difference: “The lake looks a lot better now, with crystal clear water and two lovely spray patterns. The biggest thing is the feedback from the visitors, which has been very positive.
“People like the sight and sound of the spray, and it’s
brought new life to the park. It was already popular by itself but now it has an improved look that has attracted the public even more.”
One of Otterbine’s most popular fountains, the Sunburst provides superior aeration while displaying a traditional yet striking pattern.

The UK’s leading designer of drainage trenchers has reported an unexpected resurgence of interest in its specialist sports field machine.
Last month, Mastenbroek received its first order for one of its 10/12D trenchers in over a decade.
The machine, which has recently been upgraded to feature the latest low-emission engine and improved operator controls, has been bought by AgriPower.

The company has won several large contracts in the last six months, creating the need for a new machine.

First UKAS accreditations under Compost Certification Scheme
The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has awarded the first accreditations under Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd (REAL)’s Compost Certification Scheme (CCS).
Following the successful conclusion of a 12-month pilot assessment programme, three certification bodies have been granted UKAS accreditation against both REAL’s CCS and the internationally recognised ISO/IEC 17065 product certification standard:
• Aardvark Certification Ltd
• NSF Certification Ltd
• Organic Farmers & Growers CIC
First conceived in 2007, the CCS has been developed by REAL as a quality assurance and end-of-waste scheme for compost derived from (predominantly green) waste materials that is used in the farming, horticulture, and growing-medium manufacturing industries.
In addition to allowing compost producers to achieve end-of-waste status for their products, goods bearing the CCS conformity mark have proved that they meet stringent quality criteria and do not harm the environment.
The CCS provides a framework for the independent assessment and certification of compost to PAS 100, the Compost Quality Protocol, and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency’s regulatory position statement on composting.
Announcing the awards, Justyna Staff, Head of Certification Schemes at REAL said: “Congratulations to the three certification bodies who all successfully completed the pilot programme and are now accredited to ISO/IEC 17065 for certifying against the CCS requirements.
“Accreditation by UKAS reflects the competence, impartiality, and performance capability of these organisations, while also demonstrating the CCS provides reliable services to industry.
“We are extremely proud that the Scheme has reached this important milestone in its development – all CCS certificates are now UKAS accredited, which will give consumers even greater assurance that they are receiving a reliable, quality product.”

New name for ICL’s concentrated seaweed extract
ICL is rebranding its alkalineextracted seaweed ‘SeaMax’ as ‘SMX’.
SMX is a highly concentrated Atlantic Ascophyllum nodosum seaweed, harvested from sustainable and renewable sources by Acadian Seaplants.
For any turf professional it is important to weigh up the evidence from product trials. Multiple trials carried out using SMX clearly demonstrate how seaweed extract improves the condition and rooting of the turf.
This is because the SMX extraction process retains important and influential biochemical compounds.
As an example, research recently published in the
European Turfgrass Society Proceedings showed how different Ascophyllum nodosum extraction methods produced contrasting effects on turfgrass rooting.
The alkaline-extraction method (as used in the production of SMX) produced significantly greater root length and root volume than other commonly used extractions.
Independent trials also showed that SMX helped the turfgrass produce longer roots, a greater root mass and it improved the quality of growth (shoot weight), compared to competitor products or controlled conditions (using no seaweed extract).

Pictorial Meadow sowing underway for Tower of London Jubilee ‘Superbloom’
Over 20 million Pictorial Meadow’s seeds will be sown in the moat at the Tower of London over the course of the next week, as work continues apace to create a spectacular floral ‘Superbloom’ display to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this Summer.
With favourable weather, the bloom will begin to flourish at the beginning of June, encircling the Tower with a vibrant field of flowers and creating a welcoming new habitat for wildlife in the urban landscape of the City of London.
The ‘Superbloom’ will then evolve throughout the Summer, becoming a haven for pollinators and creating a stunning spectacle of changing colours and patterns, flowering until September.
The seeds being sown by the Pictorial Meadows team this week have been carefully selected by Nigel Dunnett, Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture at the University of Sheffield, who is the lead horticulturist on the project and has designed the planting scheme.
These mixes feature different varieties of many familiar wildflowers, such as red Poppies, yellow Corn Marigolds, and blue Cornflowers.
In addition to the wildflowers, a range of garden plants are also included in the seed mixes to heighten the colour effects and to extend the season of flowering to cover the whole
summer, before and after the wildflowers reach their peak.
Sunflowers, Cosmos and Rudbeckias will flower into early autumn, and the snapdragon-like Fairy Toadflax, and Baby’s Breath will bloom at the very beginning of the summer.
Taller plants will create a wonderful, totally immersive experience for visitors, and the millions of simple, uncomplicated flowers in the Superbloom will be a wonderful source of food and nectar for pollinators.
Extensive landscape work has already taken place in the Tower’s moat to prepare for the display. Winding paths, designed by the project’s landscape architects, Grant Associates, have been installed and are being lined with woven willow edging.
The ‘Superbloom’ soil has been carefully calibrated by soil specialists, Tim O’Hare Associates, to support the growth of a continuously evolving floral display.
The seeds have been provided by Pictorial Meadows– part of the not-for-profit Green Estate CIC, social enterprise based in Sheffield.
A team from Pictorial Meadows will be travelling from Sheffield to sow the seeds in the moat, with Professor Dunnett supervising throughout the process.

GreenMech 220TMP proves to be the ‘master’
When tree surgeon Paul Cutler was in the market for a new woodchipper to handle large scale domestic tree-works, there was only one machine that fitted the bill – a Chipmaster 220TMP from GreenMech.
Having been impressed with the build quality of the GreenMech machines at a local dealer open day, Paul took delivery of his machine in January 2022, and it’s already blown him away with its high output capabilities taking large conifers and other bulky material in its stride.
Paul has used various makes and models of woodchipper over his 35-year career, with a 4” and 6” road-tow machine currently on his fleet, sitting alongside a second-hand 6” PTO unit that began costing Paul more than it was earning.
“I had recently purchased some other equipment from our local
machinery dealer Thurlow Nunn Standen, when Andy Rayner mentioned they were becoming GreenMech dealers and invited me along to an open day,” Paul explains.
Impressed with the build quality of the machines on show, he explored further, before settling on the Chipmaster 220TMP.
“The great thing about this chipper is that it has a huge 9” capacity which is fantastic for productivity, but it only requires a 60hp tractor.
“It also has a really wide infeed chute which means we can put in large, twisted brash and branches without needing to spend time trimming them down or inadvertently triggering the safety bar. Not only is it giving us high output, the whole machine is so simple to use” he continues.
The Chipmaster 220TMP is the ultimate ‘maximum output,
minimum investment’ machine. It fits the three-point linkage on tractors between 60 and 80hp, with the feed rollers powered by the tractor’s hydraulic system.
The Chipmaster has been designed to deliver the perfect combination of tremendous strength and robust performance –promising the free-flow and high throughput of bulky materials.
“I’ve been using it this week on a big domestic job, and it’s been taking 20-foot long and 6” diameter conifers, with no trouble at all.” Paul concludes, “The difference between the Chipmaster and our old machine and 6” unit is huge.
“With the performance and significant time savings it’s already bringing to jobs, it really is a brilliant investment.”

British built sprayers from Team High quality solutions for high quality landscaping
This Hampshire homeowner worked with his contractor to produce an on-trend patio design, using the latest external porcelain tiles in combination with traditional tumbled granite setts for striking feature edging and detailing, in this relatively small area.
To complete the paving grouting it was obviously an advantage to use the same jointing for both materials, which then also had to be able to withstand frequent jet washing of the paved surfaces to keep the paved surfaces in tip-top condition.
After some research online and then talking to leading UK landscaping specialists NCC Streetscape, they identified that GftK’s vdw 850+ was the ideal solution for both, plus at this early time of the year, they would not be restricted by waiting for the bed to fully cure and in trying to find a suitable weather window to complete the pointing.
This is because the vdw 850+ can be applied at low temperatures and in wet weather, which together with its speed of installation, was naturally also an attractive advantage to Fairview Drives and Design, who were to be a first-time user of this unique paving joint mortar.
This is the result, an overall ease of application with minimal cleaning works, as well as this highly aesthetic finish were a win:win bonus for both the owner and their contractor. A durable stain free and easily cleaned patio.

The clever answer to sports turf renovation
Turf renovation is a varied, complex and multi-layered term used throughout the turfcare industry.
In simple terms it means renewing an area of turf.
It sounds straight forward, but first to consider is whether the area concerned is for total renewal, partial renewal or seasonal maintenance. Sports pitch turf maintenance is an example where overseeding
can offer a great solution for seasonal turf maintenance as it allows the pitch to be played on after treatment with quick, visible results within a matter of weeks.
PSD Groundscare has a range of specialist solutions. The pedestrian DZC450 and DZC600 overseeders from innovative award winning Belgium manufacturer Eliet are exclusive to the market in terms of how they deliver seed into the ground.
The DZC600 (60cm working width) or its little brother the DZC450 (45cm working width) introduce the seed to a target depth of 5-7mm by cutting a slot and accurately dropping the seed into the grooves.
Jubilant Jedbugh praises Agrovista Amenity programme
A granular feeding programme devised by Tom Hobbis of Agrovista Amenity has dramatically improved the greens at Jedburgh Golf Club.
Described by those who play the course, Jedburgh Golf Club in Scotland is a hidden gem full of risk and reward. It is a par 69 course with spectacular views over the town of Jedburgh, Dunion and the Cheviot hills.
“We brought Amenity Specialist Tom Hobbis in from Agrovista Amenity to give us some advice,” said Robert Armstrong, Jedburgh Golf Club’s Green Ranger.
“We wanted a new entire feeding programme and so Tom looked at all the greens, not just the one we were having the most problems with. He took several soil samples to see if we had any underlying issues and fortunately there was nothing serious – just a lack of nutrients. He then came up with a plan for all of the greens. It was about taking it back to basics,” said Tom, who joined Agrovista Amenity last year.
“We needed to reduce stress on the greens and a simplistic programme was required. After careful consideration I felt that a granular approach would be most suitable.
“I put together a programme using the Compo Expert range because you get 100% nutrition from these products, and they have a very low scorch potential – which would suit the lack of water application. Another reason for choosing the Compo Expert products is that they don’t sit in the surface for long – they break down incredibly well and get into the profile very quickly. The products that I put forward have been tried and tested in all corners of the UK.”
Agrovista Amenity is the exclusive national distributor of Compo Expert’s turf products in the UK for good reason. The unique and innovative controlled and slow-release chemistry provides environmentally-friendly fertilisers at a time when many turf and landscape managers are exploring more sustainable methods.
SXG326+
The blades are Tungsten tipped (DZC 600) giving up to 300 hours worth of work even on sandy root zones. This process can be done in a single pass at 25 mm spacings at varying seeding rates from 15gm-35gm per m2
Using a seed mixture with grass that creeps will help knit the grass together reducing the appearance of lines. On more bare areas then a double pass can be done ‘up and down’ and ‘left to right’ for example, putting twice as much seed down in the area doubling the benefits such as grass coverage and speed of recovery.
The powered rubber roller at the back of the machine ensures that there is good contact between the soil and the seed
by pressing the earth down providing excellent soil to seed contact, which is essential to encourage germination.
Careful consideration at the start of a turf rejuvenation programme can certainly pay dividends to the final result. Correct preparation and aftercare is crucial for a good result as is using the
best reliable and effective equipment to do the job.
Certainly for sports pitches in season that require treatment in certain areas such as goal areas, side-lines, golf greens and cricket squares then Overseeding may just be the answer.

Imperative MM impresses the Imps
Lincoln City FC, also known as the Imps, boasts a pitch consisting of MM60 grass seed and Head Groundsman Craig Housley could not be more impressed.
MM60 is the UK’s leading winter sports renovation mixture and can be attributed with playing a key role in many of the finest sporting venues you see today. The 100% Ryegrass formula, which is perfect for divot repair, is renowned for its extremely fast germination and its high wear tolerance. It produces fantastic aesthetic qualities, and its high disease resistance provides ultimate protection.
Craig, currently in his second season as the Head Groundsman
at Lincoln City FC, is no stranger to the market leading grass seed.
“I knew just how good the seed was because I had used it in my previous role at Scunthorpe Untied FC. I would highly recommend it and will carry on using it in the future,” he said.
The decision to apply MM60 at Lincoln City FC’s LNER Stadium coincided with the construction of a brand new Fibresand pitch which took place at the end of the 2020/21 season.
In fact, the process began the very next day after the Imps’ last game of the season.
A month later and MM60 was ready to be used. Craig applied the seed in four passes at a rate of 35g per square metre. This, in theory, would
have provided enough time for the pitch to be completely ready in time for the first game of the season, but based on Craig’s experience of using MM60, he knew that this would never be in doubt.
“I’ve never known grass to come through so quickly which I believe is due to the HEADSTART GOLD treatment,” he said.
As Craig says, MM60 is treated with HEADSTART GOLD, which has been developed using the latest scientific findings and field experience. It is a natural revolutionary grass seed treatment that ensures rapid germination and is perfect for enhancing performance on sports fields, golf courses, lawns and amenity turf.
“There are so many benefits from using MM60,” continued Craig. “The colour you get from it is really good, as is the recovery, and the speed of germination is fantastic. I’ve never had any issues and it keeps the pitch free from disease.
“It’s a hard-wearing seed and we have managed to maintain really good grass coverage. Football is a difficult sport to maintain grass, especially now with the rigorous warm-ups before a game; even the cool-downs are like full training sessions. We don’t struggle for grass coverage anywhere on the pitch, even in the tight areas, and I believe that is down to the MM60.” Limagrain Enquiry 48
Top-Brush improves presentation and plant health
When a Redexim Top-Brush was unloaded from the trailer for a working demonstration at Woolley Park Golf Club in September 2021, Head Greenkeeper John Rowbottom was so impressed that it never went back on.
Twenty minutes spent on the 18th fairway of the West Yorkshire club were enough to convince John and his team of the improvements the TopBrush could make to course presentation, and the role it would play in the non-chemical
control of worm casts. Since September, the Top-Brush has been used up to three times a week, going out ahead of the fairway mowers to stand the plant up, dry the plant out and improve the quality of cut.
When worm activity then increased significantly during October and November, the 6m working width of the TopBrush meant casts were quickly and effectively dispersed.

College opts for Maredo MT 200 Flex Verticutter
Head Groundsman, Donny Reid, and his team at Robert Gordon’s College in Aberdeen, always try to be one step ahead when it comes to preparing playing surfaces.
The arrival in September 2021 of a Maredo MT 200 flex verticutter to the school’s Countesswells Sports Fields from local ground care dealer, Fairways GM, is a significant purchase in their quest for constant quality.
The Maredo is a very thorough and purposeful scarifier and targets the area just below the grass’s surface. Carbide-steel tipped blades are spaced 40 mm apart and make very precise slits that cause minimal surface disruption.
The unit comprises three independently floating heads and an ‘A’-frame with a pivot point making turning simple. Each head measures just over 63 cm giving a 1.9 m total working width.
The MT 200 removes thatch cleanly and at speed. Easy adjustment allows for a light scarify by just letting the blades touch the top layer or it can be set deeper down to depths of around 25 mm where it removes much more.
“Controlling thatch in the top layer of a natural grass surface is so important,” continued Donny. “The amount of organic matter we can take out with the Maredo is amazing.
New Verticollector from GKB launched
GKB Machines used BTME 2022 as a launch platform for a brand-new addition to their natural turf maintenance range, in the form of the Verticollector.
Based on the principles of their VStrong scarifier, the new Verticollector range promises effective organic matter removal and clean collection of the extracted material in a single pass.
The benefits of effective verticutting are well documented, seeing it play an important role in the maintenance of fine turf surfaces.
The Verticollector is available in two working widths – 1.2m and 1.6m – and is equipped with precision-engineered steel blades, spaced at 25, 50, 75 or 100mm, for the accurate removal of thatch, surface debris and lateral growth down to depths of 40mm.
The wind paddles, fitted to GKB’s unique CombiRotor, generate enough suction to lift the extracted material
up and into the new 400L collector which can then be hydraulically lifted and conveniently emptied at the press of a button.
Ideal for use on golf and bowling greens, cricket wickets and other situations where collection of the removed material is desirable, the multi-functionality offered by the Verticollector enables the operator to complete the job swiftly – bringing benefit to plant health, whilst keeping surface and play disruption to a minimum.
Commenting on it’s introduction, UK Operations Manager Tom Shinkins said, “We pride ourselves on listening to the end users and coming up with solutions to everyday problems.
“The new Verticollector will be ideal for greenkeepers, combining OM removal and debris collection in one pass to make the task more efficient and less labour intensive.”

Blaukorn kick starts new Headland Amenity programme
New mixture and numerous new formulations
A number of new and updated formulations have been announced with the launch of the Johnsons Sports Seed guide for 2022.
Particular highlights include the introduction of new highly rated cultivars into the Johnsons J Links and J Rye Fairway fine turf mixtures, and a brand-new, first-of-its-kind mixture for sports turf - Johnsons J Premier 4Turf - delivering proven Brown Patch tolerance.
The 2022 formulation of Johnsons J Links is set to deliver even better salt and drought tolerance to those courses under links conditions thanks to the introduction of Absolom Slender Creeping Red Fescue.
Absolom is a highly rated cultivar, offering exceptional disease resistance and tolerance for close mown management.
Also backed by research is the brand-new Johnsons J Premier 4Turf mixture. Featuring 10% Fabian and 10% Tetragame tetraploid perennial ryegrass, J Premier 4Turf promises to become the ultimate football and rugby renovation mixture for disease-resistance, rapid establishment and exceptional wear tolerance.
The larger seed and root system of DLF’s 4turf varieties deliver strong, fast establishment at temperatures as low as 4oc, as well as healthy plant development. Its improved tolerance of drought and disease means the sward retains better colour and recovers quickly from periods of stress.
Blaukorn has been praised by the Head Groundsman at AFC Telford United for delivering a fast, but long-lasting, colour boost to their stadium pitch.
A single application of the quick release fertiliser from Headland Amenity was put down in February and, in conjunction with Greentec, should deliver the nutrients required to see the pitch safely through to the end of the season.
The maintenance at the New Bucks Head Stadium is very much a family affair – with current Head Groundsman George Conway taking over the role following his father’s retirement in January 2022, with additional support and match-day help from George’s brother, Andrew.
Shortly after his appointment, George had a visit from Headland’s Regional Technical Manager for Sports Turf, Jack Hawkes, and the pair constructed a feeding programme for the remainder of the season and beyond.
Blaukorn 15-3-20 is a homogenous granule with no carrier and a highly watersoluble phosphorous content that breaks down quickly when in contact with moisture.
Containing ammonium and nitrate, Blaukorn provides a fast response even at low temperatures – something that impressed George.
“The temperatures we had in February were low but that didn’t hamper the response we received from the product.
“It gave the pitch the boost it needed with results that have lasted. We’re then going to be applying Greentec 14-2-6 to deliver a mix of nitrogen sources which should see us through to renovations.”
In addition to AFC Telford United first-team matches, the pitch also hosts West Brom Under 23’s and junior fixtures so as well as being a high-use surface, application and maintenance windows can be tight.
“I’ve had fantastic support from Jack. He pops in regularly to see how the pitch is holding up and is not afraid to suggest new things to maximise the results from the programme, respecting our resources and budget.”

SISIS Veemo hits the spot at Stourbridge
After trialling various tractor mounted scarifiers, Steven Harvey, Head Greenkeeper at Stourbridge Golf Course, concluded that the SISIS Veemo MK 2 was by far the most suitable for his fairways.
Stourbridge Golf Club in the West Midlands was formed in 1892 progressing from the original 9 holes laid out on the former Pedmore racecourse to 18 holes in 1909.
The basic outline of that course remains today, and marks somewhat of a divide according to Steven.
Steve oversees a team of four members of staff and full credit must be given to the team for achieving a course which is highly praised by members and visitors alike.
The SISIS Veemo MK 2 is a tractor-mounted scarifier used for removing thatch from large areas of turf, such as golf course fairways. The Veemo’s strong cutting blades are designed for minimum surface disturbance and maximum thatch removal via three floating heads which are independent from the main frame.
The heads each move in all degrees of motion and follow any undulations of the ground on a fairway without any danger of damaging / scalping the turf, whilst the tungsten tipped hook blades with variable spacing cut effectively through the thatch layer.
“The Veemo simply stood out from all the others – mainly for its durability and the way it hugs the ground, particularly on the
Hunter on target for the Darts
The heavily used pitch at Dartford FC’s Princes Park Stadium is benefitting from a recently installed Hunter irrigation system, supplied by KAR UK. From Dartford FC’s first team to the academy teams; from the Dartford ladies’ teams and London City Lionesses to Charlton FC’s Under 23’s, the pitch at Princes Park is in regular demand. To be precise, it averages 76 games per year.
Responsible for ensuring every one of those games takes place is the experienced Head Groundsman Jay Berkhauer who works for Jordans Sports Ground Solutions – who are responsible for the maintenance of Princess Park
as well as a host of other clubs all over the South East. Supplied by KAR UK and installed by Prime Irrigation, Jay chose the i-40 rotors, and the Centralus irrigation management platform. This provides a highly secure, comprehensive cloud-based control and monitoring features to the ICC2 controller at the stadium.
The connectivity allows users to view a controller’s status, change settings, view forecasts, save water, and receive instant notification of important system alarms — all without costly and time-consuming travel and site visits.
fairways on the bottom half of the course.” said Steve.
“It is fantastic the way it hits every part of the surface we want it to hit, due to the floating heads. The way it connects to the back of the tractor is also so simple.
“It is well built, and I can’t envisage any issues with damage or maintenance. The Veemo basically does everything we want it to do. We use the Veemo anytime between March and November, and the beauty of it is that not only can I use it on the fairways, but I can get it onto our tees and the approaches as well.
“I’m also going to be looking to use it on the greens very soon, and I think it will do a great job. I want to use it to its maximum capability.”

PSD provides a range of specialist mowers
There is an increasing demand for reliable remote control mowers for the commercial user where certain tasks make it very difficult to mow quickly and safely and a remote control mower is often the answer.
Commercial remote control mowers have been designed and developed to reduce and in some circumstances remove health and safety issues working on slopes, near water courses, in environments were operators can be at risk, including from thorny foliage, animals, reptiles and insects.
The operator is able to work the machine at a distance
which can be safer and more convenient for them.
Another advantage is that complications regarding Hand and Arm Vibrations and hearing are less of an issue.
PSD Groundscare offer specific machines for specific tasks, including:
• Ride-on remote control mower - The AS Motor AS 940 Remote Control brushcutter is a high performing ride on and remote control mower with a 300m range and offers a great safe solution for mowing areas where the
operator can’t access eg steep slope, under trees or into nettles and brambles and as such is a very popular choice for a wide range of customers.
• Walk-behind remote control mower – The Koppl Taurus is a versatile walk behind power unit that can quickly be converted into a remote control mower that is a robust solution suitable for dealing with hard to reach areas for the operator.
• Tracked remote control mower - For extra grip a tracked remote control mower such as the Koppl Crawler is perfect for customers that require
stability on steep slopes up to 50 degrees such as motorway embankment services and forestry/ woodland applications as well as in diffi cult to reach places.

Dennis G34D is brilliant for the Baggies
Rob Lane, Head Groundsman at The Hawthorns stadium, recently decided that a Dennis G34D cylinder was the mower that would help him achieve that all important pitchperfect-presentation.
Back in the seventies when Rob was stood in the stands watching his beloved West Bromwich Albion FC, little did he know that he would one day be responsible for looking after the pitch. Fast forward a
decade and he was about to do exactly that.
“I wasn’t good enough to play the game, but I knew I wanted to be involved in football,” he said.
“That was when I first thought about becoming a groundsman.
So, I contacted all the football clubs in the area closest to me, and the only vacancy available was at my childhood club. I jumped at the chance. My whole family are West Brom fans, so it was a proud moment.”
Rob embarked on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) which included a day release where he studied Sports Turf at college. That was in 1988 and he has been at the club ever since. The one-club man is committed to preparing the best pitch possible for the players, the staff, the fans, and of course his family, so Rob never cuts any corners.
Therefore, when it came to finding a new mower to give the
pitch that all important matchday cut, it was a decision he was not going to rush into.
“Our previous mower we had for presenting the pitch needed replacing and I looked long and hard at what was available,” he said. “I just couldn’t look past the Dennis G34D and that was based on our experience with the Dennis G860 cylinder mower –which is a machine we use a lot here. It is the same height; the same weight and we liked the thought of having two Dennis mowers for the pitch. It would be nice and uniformed.”
As Rob says, the Dennis G34D has been designed and built following the same concept as the popular Dennis G860 cylinder mower. Available in three different cutting sizes –26”, 30” and 34” – the mowers incorporate a large-diameter eight bladed cutting cylinder to cater for a wide range of uses to leave a precision cut.
The handlebar design makes manoeuvring easy and the wide adjustment makes it comfortable for all cutting heights. Rob now uses the two mowers in conjunction with one another to prepare the pitch. While using cassettes such as the verticutter and the brush on the G860, he will save the G34D for matchdays.
“On a Friday before a game we will use the G34D to cut widthways and then on a
Saturday morning we will cut lengthways. It provides a fantastic finish every time. We also like the fact that if it is a bit dewy or a bit wet then it doesn’t drop the grass clippings like our old machine used to. It also has a much bigger grass box to get more in and you don’t have to keep stopping to empty it. I’m very pleased – it is a superbly engineered mower.”

First mow of the season
Spring is an ideal time to make repairs and refresh your lawn following the harsh winter months.
Vince Brauns, European Product Manager at cordless batterypowered mowing specialist EGO, has put together his top tips for spring to ensure that lawns look their best for summer.
1. The Post-Winter Clear Up Winter is harsh on any lawn, after months without sunshine, gardens may look a little tired. It is important that before the first mow of the season that you take time to clear away any fallen twigs, leaves or other debris that may have gathered as these can damage the blades on your lawnmower.
A leaf rake is best for clearing away leaves and dead grass as this will help perk up the turf
ahead of growing season. When using a rake, the best time is early spring when the soil has dried out – if the soil is muddy, you risk damaging the grass!
2. First Mow of the Season
As lawn growth begins in March, start mowing your lawn once it reaches about three inches (8cm) in height, with a high cut on dry grass if possible. Mowing the new grass blades once they reach three inches will prevent them from becoming overgrown but will stimulate continual growth.
Another tip to remember is the One-Third Rule. Never cut more than a third of a blade of grass in one go as cutting more can stress the grass whilst cutting too much can lead to disease and weeds. Instead, you should gradually reduce the grass length over several weeks by using the adjustable deck height of your mower.
3. Give your Grass Fresh Air Aerating your lawn in early spring will really help it bounce back after the colder months by preventing the grass from becoming overly compacted and giving it more space to flourish.
An aerator tool breaks up compact soil so that enough space can be made to provide the roots access to fresh air and nutrients and encourage new growth. After aerating, you should use lawn fertiliser which your grass will store and use as food.
4. New Growth
The best thing after aerating is to spread grass seed, preferably a similar type to your existing lawn. With new growth your lawn will be kept looking fresh all-year-round, the first week of April is an ideal time to sow grass seeds, but it does require more
monitoring and more watering to increase growth before any heatwaves in the summer season.
Before seeding, you should mow your lawn to a short length. This ensures that the seeds won’t get stuck in tall blades and that they get adequate sunlight. Then after seeding, only mow your lawn once grass roots and shoots are established (usually around 4 weeks) and when the ground is relatively dry. Ensure that your mower blades are sharp and on the highest setting for cutting.
Make it neat
5.
Contour your lawn by trimming the edges straight after your first mow. By re-establishing a neat boundary, you only need to do light maintenance to keep up appearance throughout the growing season. The aim is to neaten your lawn by giving it definition and straight lines,
Etesia is the way for wet grass
“We chose Etesia because it has a reputation for being the best at cutting and collecting wet grass,” said Adam. “When it comes to the design and build, Etesia has thought about all the things that other manufacturers simply have not.”
Adam Patterson, owner of Patterson’s Gardening Services in Northern Ireland, needed a mower that would perform in the wet, and in his opinion, there was only one brand which was comfortably up to the job. Over the past 30 years,
Etesia ride-on and pedestrian mowers have become world renowned for being able to cut and collect – in all all weathers. Even in long and wet grass conditions, the mowers provide a quality finish with outstanding collection performance.
Makita expands range with cordless lawnmower
Makita UK has introduced a new cordless lawnmower to its growing line-up of outdoor equipment. The 36V DLM538 LXT is a 530mm Lawnmower powered by two 18V LXT Li-Ion batteries in series to drive a powerful 36V motor and is ideal for public spaces and residential areas.
Featuring a 70-litre grass collection box, Makita’s latest lawnmower tackles areas up to 800m2 with ease, so operators can cover vast areas without being constrained by trailing cables or mains power supply. With high no load speeds of up to 3,000rpm, this four-in-one
machine offers cutting, collecting, mulching and rear discharge options.
This IPX4-rated mower is designed for British working conditions. The cutting deck is water resistant, and its large, high grip tyres offer improved ground contact to sustain high performance when working over muddy or uneven and bumpy terrain. The machine also features a 10-stage cutting height adjustment (20–100mm) so that users can ensure the machine is optimised for the working conditions.
UK Enquiry 71
He was recommended two models from the PRO 46 range; the PHTS3 - a single speed selfpropelled mower and the PHE3 - a push variant. Following the same concept of the PRO 46 range of pedestrian mowers first launched in the early 1990’s, both models feature Xenoy cutting decks for increased strength, shear washer crank protection, individual height of cut adjusters, a new 22mm handlebar design, the latest Honda GCV170 engine and are supplied complete with 80 litre grass box and rear deflector as standard.
One main feature of these models is the ‘one cut’ principle. This means the grass is only cut once before being sent to the grass box. The benefits of this are reduced power consumption from fast deck material ejection and secondly, as it is not multi chopped, the grass does not stick to the cutting deck in the same way as multi-cut grass does prevent unwanted blockages. The grass box is manufactured out of the same Xenoy compound as the cutting deck for maximum strength and comes complete with fill indicator.
Adam ended up buying two of each model from his local dealer RD Mechanical and hasn’t looked back since.

Homburg drain cleaners launch in the golf market
Fentons of Bourne Ltd, the family-owned estate and turf maintenance equipment supplier, has been distributors of Homburg drain-cleaning equipment to the agricultural and horticultural sectors for past 28 years.
Now, with the introduction of two new dedicated machines, Homburg are entering the golf sector to help course managers resolve drainage issues.
Waterlogged areas on golf courses, often the result of blocked or damaged drainage systems, can close specific holes or even the whole course, with the resultant loss of income and, more importantly, disgruntled golfers.
To alleviate this problem, Homburg has introduced two models, the Blizz and Delta, both tractor mounted and pto-driven pipe cleaning systems to ensure playability on your course. Using an available water source, be it
nearby pond, ditch or attached water bowser, the system is easily transportable using a 40 hp (or larger) tractor.
The Blizz is the entry-level model, which is compact and manoeuvrable with excellent performance characteristics. It can be used on clay or plastic pipes and is equipped with two pressure gauges; one to monitor water pressure, the other to monitor hydraulic pressure. An increase in hydraulic pressure makes it easy to tell when the drainage pipes are dirty.
The Delta offers more ease of use and is the ideal machine for maintaining drainage systems over a large area or on a frequent basis. It offers hydraulicallyoperated height adjustment, extension, retraction and folding of the drainage arm and length adjustment of the guide arm.
The pump capacity of both machines is 135 l/min at 540 rpm.
When in use, they require a maximum water volume of 80 l/ min and as the pump works more efficiently at a lower speed, it’s more economical.
The use of a low pump pressure of 35 bar (500 psi), results in 10 to 12 bar (145 to 175 psi) at the cleaning nozzle, which ensures safe operation. Previously, drainage systems were cleaned around 100 bar (1450 psi) and this can cause a lot of damage to the soil structure or the drainage pipe. Because Homburg use low pressure, these problems are prevented, and there is less chance that drainage system will be damaged.
A special HPE cleaning hose is pushed into the drain making it possible for the nozzle to flush the pipe and ensures that the dirt is removed quickly. Up to 500 metres of hose can be specified.

Greener and more productive LM-Trac for the UK
Kioti UK has launched the electric LM-Trac 287 into the UK, the ideal tool for your introduction to your chemical reduction or chemical free weed control programme.
Manufactured in Finland the LM-Trac has for many years been the Netherlands market leader of compact multi tool carriers.
Local authorities and Contractors use them for all day and everyday working.
The work rate of these units far exceeds normal methods with minimal driver fatigue even if used for long hours.
The LM-Trac models 285/286 have been very successful
and their successor, the LMTrac 287 (introduced in 2020), continues that line unabated.
Now it's time for the next step with the introduction of the environmentally friendly electric model.
During the original development of the LM-Trac 287, The R & D department of LM-Trac prepared the machine for the step towards an emission-free variant.
Extra space was created for placing battery packs as efficiently as possible.
This has resulted in a machine where there is a choice between one relatively compact or two battery packs.
The first variant is intended as a basis for a machine in which a fuel cell may be added as a range extender.
LM-Trac continues to deliver the 287 with the very clean and economical Perkins stage 5 diesel engine.
The pre-production LMTrac 287e will be intensively tested during 2022. The first machines will be available to purchase at the end of 2022.
The relatively light weight and practical width of the LM287 models means that the units can be used even in narrower pathways and cycle ways without damaging the infrastructure.
QUALITY DEFINED,
After a decade of working with 2-stroke engines, Adam Patterson, from Patterson’s Gardening Services in Northern Ireland, thought it was time to switch to battery-powered equipment.
Adam and his customers aren’t the only ones to be bowled over by the innovative range of Pellenc batterypowered equipment.
Adam arranged a demonstration with his local dealer RD Mechanical and purchased the Helion Compact 2 which is the lightest batterypowered hedge trimmer on the
market. It is an efficient tool that meets the needs of professionals in terms of power and trimming quality. In fact, the Helion allows the user to work comfortably when trimming hedges, ornamental trees and can also be used for pruning.
Furthermore, a swivel head is available on the pole models, and can be adjusted by +90°/-45° which means you can work in all trimming positions. The Swivel handle is also adjustable by +/- 90° for vertical work without bending the handle.

Low-profile defence from Marshalls HVM products
Marshalls Landscape Protection, part of hard landscaping manufacturer Marshalls plc, has designed and supplied Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) solutions as part of a development commemorating Sikh soldiers who fought during the First World War, in Smethwick, West Midlands.
Having impressed on previous projects, and possessing a wealth of industry experience and expertise, Marshalls Landscape Protection were asked by Sandwell Council to be involved with the development.
To protect the site against potential threats, Marshalls’ RhinoGuard Protective Bollards, part of its Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) product portfolio, were used
to enclose the majority of the site’s perimeter.
Specified in a stainless-steel finish with red reflective band, the bollards are fully crash tested in accordance with the BSI PAS 68 standard, capable of stopping a 7.5 tonne lorry traveling at 40mph completely in its tracks.
To introduce some additional greenery to the development, and to break up perimeter, Marshalls cast concrete BellitGiove Planters were also specified. Manufactured using polished brown porphyry precious stone, the planters provided an elegant and visually appealing means to add shrubbery into the environment.

Kubota launches new tracked dumpers
Kubota has expanded its extensive range of tracked dumpers with the launch of a new electric model, the KC70VSL-4e, and a new diesel machine, the KC110SL-4.
The KC70VSL-4e has been developed on the base of the KC70H-4e, boasting a lithium battery pack of 48V and 120 Ah. The new model will be a perfect fit for customers working in city centres due to its quiet operation. The tracked dumper brings more versatility than the KC70H-4e with a variable track and a self-loading device.
The model has a maximum load capacity of 700kg and is able to transport large quantities of material in a short time. The width of the machine is 758 mm (tracks retracted), allowing users to work in tight areas.
The tracks are also electrically powered, granting better efficiency and less energy consumption.
The machine can be charged totally in three hours and reach 80% charge in 1.5 hours. A complete charge will allow a full day’s work. In addition, the Universal fast external Battery Charger (UBC) is sold with the machine and it works with the following power and tensions (3kW and from 80V to 240V).
The new KC110SL-4 comes in addition to an existing machine on the segment of tracked dumpers with more than 0.5m3
of payload, the KC110HR-4. The new dumper is equipped with a front tip skip of 1200kg of capacity and self-loading device.
The KC110SL-4 has a Kubota D722 Stage 5 engine, well known for his reliability and performances. The machine can overcome any slopes up to 20° and will be very useful for construction work, renovation or landscaping.
