Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison OgdenNewton OBE said: “Parks are an essential part of our green infrastructure, playing a key role in our environmental sustainability. They are often the beating heart of
a community, providing countless benefits to people and wildlife. Importantly, they provide a green haven for everybody to enjoy, regardless of their age, social status or ability to pay for access.

The Government used the start of the 2022 Love Parks Week to make a big announcement that more than 100 new and improved green spaces on their doorstep through £9 million in government funding.
The Levelling Up Parks Fund will create new and improved parks in urban areas, helping communities to come together and enjoy the outdoors. In England, the cash will be given to councils to create or significantly revamp existing parks in 85 neighbourhoods most deprived of outdoor space. Areas set to benefit include Liverpool, Birmingham, Carlisle and 16 London boroughs. Of course, any investment is welcome. However, the £9m represents a drop in the ocean of the scale of funding our parks and green spaces require in order to be maintained to the high standards we are used to, let alone proper investment in new high quality community spaces.
There is no doubt that the pandemic proved how popular and vitally important parks and green spaces are to people. It also showed the consistently high standard these spaces are maintained to despite ever-decreasing budgets and resources. This quality was further highlighted with a record number of sites awarded Green Flag Award status in 2022. So, what is required for the welcoming words and praise to be matched by proper levels of funding and investment, not just in the short-term but in the long-term? A new leader of the Conservative Party will be elected soon and that person will become the next Prime Minister and we will watch with interest how friendly and supportive to our industry they are.
The same can be said for the Play & Activity sector, where such facilities are recognised for their importance yet often struggle to secure sufficient funding. This month we have our regular look at this sector, with the latest news and case studies.
Elsewhere, we have special spotlights on Ride-on Mowers, Compact Tractors, Hedge & Verge Mowers, along with a look at hard and

Ash dieback costs poses further to council budgets
A recent survey on the impacts of ash dieback found nearly a quarter of the local councils surveyed expect their total costs for dealing with ash die back to amount to over £10m.
The survey, conducted by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE), also found that 75% of local authority respondents expect their ash tree population to fall by 60–95%, putting the carbon reduction objectives of local and national tree planting strategies at risk.
The management of ash dieback is proving a real challenge for tree managers as to whether trees should be felled, or allowed to stand, in order to develop resistance to the disease and protect species which are reliant upon the ash for their home.
There is also the issue of public safety with regards to falling branches, a symptom of the disease.
Having received a number of enquiries as to how local councils are dealing with ash die back, APSE pulled together a survey of our member authorities.
Of the local authorities surveyed: Over 75% of respondents expect their ash tree population to fall by 60–95%, most reporting figures at the higher end of this scale. 29% estimate the eventual total costs for dealing with the impacts of ash dieback to be >£1.1m, with nearly a quarter expecting losses to be >£10m.
There is less demand in the coming two years to fell and remove diseased tree than in the coming 3-10 years; from 2.5%
GreenMech evolution at APF 2022
EVO’s of every variety will be taking centre stage on stand 1270-1310 in the outside area as leading woodchipper manufacturer GreenMech returns to APF 2022.
On show at Ragley Estate this September will be models in road-tow, fixed track, SAFE-Trak and SURE-Trak configurations.
Originally launched in roadtow format, the EVO 165D was quickly joined by the fixed track EVO 165DT in the autumn of 2019.
Following this was the 165P SUB 750 model–incorporating all of the proven EVO features such as the wide infeed chute, twin horizontal feed rollers and heavy-duty flywheel–in a smaller, lighter, petrol-driven package.
More recently, the EVO concept was extended into the 8” market with the launch of the EVO 205D. At the heart of the EVO 205 is a 50hp Kubota diesel engine which delivers outstanding processing power to make light work of bulky brash and timber.
Suited to the biggest tasks, in the most challenging of locations, the introduction of the ‘big brother’ then paved the way for a range of tracked models, with EVO 205DT Fixed Track, SAFE-Trak and SURE-Trak options now available.
Also on display at APF, and new for 2022, is the range of GreenMech aftermarket service kits–available for popular GreenMech models.

in the next two years to 33% in the next 6-10 years. Between 10%–40% of highway verges have trees suffering ash dieback.
86% feel the Government is not providing sufficient funding to local authorities to address the problem. Paul O’Brien, APSE Chief Executive, said, “At a time when there is a national drive to increase tree numbers to combat climate change and carbon emissions, talk of the UK losing at least 75% of its ash population to ash dieback will have a hollowing effect on the carbon reduction objectives of tree planting strategies.
“From the results of the survey, it is clear there will be a large expense involved in dealing with ash dieback, and it is unlikely local authority budgets alone will be able to deal with these costs. Therefore, over
the coming years it will be anticipated that Government will need to step in, not only to promote the planting of new trees to address climate change, but also to help deal with the felling and removal of dead and dying ash trees.
“Dealing with ash dieback may very much be like trying to hold
back waves, as the disease is now so entrenched in the UK’s ash tree population. But that does not mean we cannot learn lessons, such as having the correct biosecurity measures in place to prevent the future importing of tree and plant diseases, if we are to ensure we can guarantee the future health of our trees and woodlands.”
APSE will be holding an online seminar on 21 September exploring in greater detail the risks to service delivery and climate objectives ash die back poses for local authorities, as well as measures currently by employed by councils to mitigate these risks.

Our range of equipment offers optimally matched machines and attachments, developed to technical perfection with the ultimate attention to detail. Put simply, our machines are powerful and durable, offering you maximum safety and comfort.
With the exception of our engines, every part of our machines comes from our own development and production facility, and is tailored specifically for our customers needs. That is why you’ll find the perfect machine for every application within our range, from compact all-rounders to robust powerhouses.
What are the benefits of a 2-wheel tractor with implements? A Köppl 2-wheel tractor is easy to operate, and offers add-on equipment from a single source. It can be used for many tasks and with its Alpine German engineering it’s no wonder that Köppl build two wheel tractors specifically to cope with steep slope mowing, using a choice of flail mowers, cutterbars or rotary mower attachments as best suites the location and application.
What type of customer benefits from the Köppl concept and range?
As a highly regarded manufacturer of professional 2-wheel tractors and attachments, our customers come from a range of professional markets, including agriculture, forestry, gardening, landscaping and municipal management.
How are Köppl managing the current supply chain issues? It’s been tough across all sectors, however our high levels of production along with our high stock control ensures that we are able to deliver a large number of machines. To maintain our high machine availability, we have broadened our supplier base and we now have a wider network of high-quality suppliers, meaning that as a business we aren’t as fully dependent on individual suppliers as we may have been in the past. That said, the quality of the components is key so finding the right suppliers is of great importance.
How are Köppl’s products distributed in the UK?
Köppl products are distributed in the UK through PSD Groundscare. Köppl and PSD have a longstanding relationship, with a partnership that spans over 10 years and is built on the solid foundation of the shared vision and values of both companies.
Why choose a remote control mower?
Over recent years, we’ve seen a growing demand for reliable remote control machines and the remote controlled Köppl Crawler on tracks is the ideal solution for tasks where an area is particularly difficult to access. It also reduces health and safety issues for operators working on slopes, near water or in environments where there may be a risk, including thorny foliage. The technology allows the operator to work at a safe distance, and also benefits the operator with the reduction of exposure to the noise and vibration of the machine.
What’s new?
The new fully professional Compact Comfort eDrive from the Köppl range boasts up to 100% slope inclination, ergonomic controlled via EasyDrive, power shuttle function, height-adjustable swivel bar and quick-change flange and standard cooling circuits, proving itself in a wide variety of applications.
The Compact Comfort eDrive joins the existing Compact Easy eDrive in our growing portfolio of battery powered solutions. There are also more than 40 attachments for an array of tasks, including mowing and mulching, haymaking, soil cultivation, grading, ploughing, sweeping, path maintenance and for snow and ice clearance in winter.
What are Köppl doing to improve their sustainability, including moving with the times into the battery powered era? As a pioneer of eMobility, Köppl already have many years of experience with electrically driven power units and the efficient tuning of attachments. As a result, Köppl have not only received an award for the eDrive concept, but also for the concept of efficient power transmission to the PTO, including, the ergonomic handle control via EasyDrive and the ground-saving turnaround active steering.

Glade of Light completed as tribute to Manchester’s bombing victims
The Glade of Light memorial in Manchester–a significant design project which commemorates the victims of the 22nd May 2017 Manchester Arena bombing–has been fully completed.
The memorial has been designed by BCA Landscape (BCAL) working in conjunction with Smiling Wolf, who commissioned the new aerial images to show the context of the project and the features that have been added to ensure that this is a special garden for the victims’ families, friends and the wider city.
Andy Thomson is director at BCAL and explained: “The Glade of Light is a truly unique public space and a beautiful garden for people from all over the world to refl ect on one of the most signifi cant events in Manchester’s history. Many memorials are defined by clipped lawns and hedge perimeters, but that wasn’t our intention
here. The Glade of Light is not figurative monumentalisation but is part of a design movement that embraces a more dynamic and contemporary form or memorialisation.
“We have created a space in which a visitor is not a viewer stood apart from the memorial, but an active part of a living process, invited into the glade (and the circle) to pay their respects, show their love and celebrate the lives of the 22 people that had their lives tragically taken away.”
The memorial is the culmination of a sensitive design process, one which saw BCAL and Smiling Wolf considering families, survivors and loved ones of victims, whilst also meeting Manchester City Council’s brief of delivering a public place of remembrance.
The abstracted design is an emotional response to the
ineffability of sorrow and loss, comprising both multi-public and private features.
Among them are the memory capsules; each nestled beneath the bronze hearts set around the marble halo, the capsules allowed victims’ families a place for personal memories, private messages and meaningful mementoes.
The sensitive installation of these offered each family a private space in what is a very public memorial.
The designs also had to consider the wider environment, with the Glade set within the context of an historically protected area with multiple listed nationally significant buildings, existing utilities and catacombs beneath that had to be worked around–the designers have remained true to the beauty, purity and simplicity behind their original concept and vision.

Singing the praises of a tank-mix
A tank-mix designed by Agrovista Amenity is helping to control the weed population at the Singing Hills Golf Club in West Sussex.
Course Manager Mark Lunday and his Deputy Tom Granite have improved the course each year. The three-way tank-mix which Agrovista Amenity recommended consisted of Praxys (2L/ha)-a systemic, post-
emergence herbicide, containing clopyralid, florasulam and fluroxypyr which combines three active ingredients and two modes of action; GoGreen Select (25L/ha) which is a complex iron sulphate for rapid greening; and Evolution Xtra Soluble (20kg/ha)-a stabilised urea product which is a costeffective nitrogen source giving 2-3 months longevity.
The mix is applied with water at a rate of 320L/ha. ALS Contractors were brought in to spray the Agrovista Amenity tank-mix on all 27 fairways and green surrounds with a view of controlling the troublesome weeds while also improving the condition and health of the turf.

TriCure AD keeps the greens green
Despite the hottest temperatures ever recorded this summer, the greens at Wexham Park Golf Centre still green, thanks to TriCure AD from Headland Amenity. Course Manager Tom Evans has praised the multi-molecular soil surfactant for retaining condition and
presentation on the venue’s 27 greens–citing both a reduction in the amount of hand-watering required and, in turn, an increase in available water to maintain other areas of the site.
Tom continues: “Like a lot of clubs our water supply is
limited. In previous years the water to the tees has been turned off because of how much was required to keep the greens in good shape. That hasn’t been necessary this year, and that really is testament to the effectiveness of the TriCure AD.”
TriCure AD is available in liquid, granular and pellet form, for accurate dosing through hose end applicators and offers cost-effective multi-rate use on all types of sports turf surface.

It’s more than products with ICL
Warren Scott, Grounds Manager at Liverpool Football Club, has revealed why he chooses to work so closely with ICL. Warren has been working for Liverpool FC for an incredible twenty-three years. Warren admits to avoiding the limelight but his whole philosophy to grounds management is somewhat pioneering.
His innovative methods could well be the blueprint for years to come according to Phil Collinson, North West Key Accounts Manager for ICL.
Warren uses a wide range of ICL and Syngenta products across all the club’s sites and he offered a snapshot into how two of the products have performed.
Aside from the products, Warren was also quick to praise ICL’s commitment to education. “A big factor in choosing to work with ICL is that you can get great education along with the products that we use,” he said.
“I would never put a product down without knowing exactly what the product is, but many skilled grounds persons, not always by choice, don’t know this.
“Quite often they don’t get the chance or the time to do this kind of research. In this respect ICL frequently hold seminars and education days–they give people the opportunity to learn why they are applying certain products.”

These garden spaces, full of cloud-like planting schemes are set within raised beds and tall grasses with vegetation designed to offer yearround interest with a mix of evergreens, Mediterranean and more exotic species.
Boughton’s IN1 substrate was selected to support this scheme thanks to its ability to support larger plants and to be installed at depths from 100–500cm, thanks to its sandy texture.
Additionally, Boughton’s IN1 substrate offers significant moisture retention qualities, making it the perfect choice when so many plants are vying for attention within this threehectare site.
IN1 from Boughton continues to meet and exceed all G.R.O guidelines. Elsewhere Boughton’s Lightweight Substrate was used to provide growing media where weight loading for the green roof needed to be lighter than traditional green roof schemes.
Finally, Rootzone completed the offering. Supplied as a ready-mixed solution, Rootzone provided better planting conditions throughout the scheme.

Trailblazing living wall firm celebrates 15-year anniversary
Biotecture, a pioneering company in the living wall sector, is celebrating its 15th year anniversary with an eye on the future.
The trailblazing business based near Chichester was established in 2007 by visionaries Richard Sabin and Mark Laurence with the aim of transforming urban environments and reconnecting people with nature.
Richard and Mark developed a revolutionary hydroponic
living wall system, which helped to change the perception of living walls from a novelty landscaping feature into a widely recognised cladding material.
Biotecture’s modular system remains the most flexible, resilient, and low water use of any fully comprehensive living wall system and it can be seen across London and UK on projects such as 20 Fenchurch Street (The Walkie-Talkie) and Wimbledon’s No.1 Court.
‘Active air flow’ is another innovative technology that will help Biotecture continue to lead the living wall sector.
This involves drawing air through plant roots within the living wall to clean it, through a process known as phytoremediation, before feeding it back into the building spaces as clean, fi ltered air for the benefit of the occupiers.

An urgent need for healthy security systems
The London Ambulance Service is the busiest ambulance service in the UK, answering approximately 3000 emergency calls a day, totalling up to two million per year.
In 2021, the main aim for the service was to install robust fencing and security around the perimeter of six London Ambulance Service stations.
A range of products, including swing and bi-folding gates were specified and installed to allow access for both vehicles and pedestrians.
Jacksons Fencing’s bi-folding gates run via smooth and fast opening and closing mechanisms, which is vital for emergency service stations; quick access to and from the stations whilst ensuring the sites remain secure when the gates are not in use.
All Jacksons’ automated gate systems are installed by DHFtrained engineers following current safety standards and implementing all required safety devices.
Jacksons Fencing and London Ambulance Services agreed that due to the rise in acts of crime, the Barbican range was to be installed across most stations,
providing a high level of security while maintaining good levels of visibility.
This popular range of fencing features welded pale-throughrail construction, concealed panel-to-post connectors, and the bolts and rivets are hidden therefore preventing them from being removed.
Barbican’s smart appearance also helps to make it more aesthetically pleasing for the Ambulance staff as well as helping it to fit into the residential area without creating a hostile environment.
At one of the chosen sites, SecuriMesh fencing was installed to replace 11.6m of chain link fencing. This range features clamp bars and tamper-proof fixings to strengthen and protect it against criminal behaviour, such as vandalism.
It also features small apertures, preventing cutting or climbing, but still providing good visibility. The fencing is coated in a premium Galfan® zinc alloy ensuring it has long-lasting protection against weathering, rust, or corrosion.
It can also be polyester powder coated in a range of colours to
suit brands or increase visibility.
Manufactured from premium quality materials and expert processes, Jacksons’ products are built to last, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming repairs and replacements over time, and preventing disruption to our critical healthcare services.
Peter Jackson, Jacksons Fencing Managing Director, comments: “On behalf of Jacksons Fencing, we would like to thank the ambulance services and NHS for all of their hard and amazing work through the pandemic and beyond. It truly was an honour to be specified for this vital project which aimed to secure and protect the London Ambulance Services.
“Providing them with robust security allows the service and staff to focus on working to protect the people of London.”
He continues: “We hope that the security solutions we’ve installed will enable the services to continue their crucial operations without any disturbance.
Investing in long-lasting, high quality products ensures the security of these critical services is fit for purpose now and for years to come.”

CLD Fencing’s FlexaRail system redefines the industry standard
CLD Fencing’s high performance FlexaRail system, developed to safeguard and protect children’s play areas, has been re-engineered to offer new, industry-leading features in safety and sustainability.
With a blend of innovative installation and security features, attractive, welcoming designs and an in-house manufacturing process, the unique qualities of the FlexaRail range have seen it attract an extensive client base across the education and amenity sectors. Now, the system has been scaled up to include the latest installation and safety adaptions and offer a more sustainable manufacturing process enabling clients to specify an environmentally focused
security solution. Russell Wells, Sales Director of CLD Fencing, said: “The innovative new and improved design and production of FlexaRail contributes to a reduction in carbon used. In comparison to traditional solid bar, welded railings, FlexaRail produces 98% less carbon during the manufacturing process, while our weld free technology and the tubular rails used are driving change as sectors seek to rebuild and evolve for a greener planet.”
Other benefits include approval by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) for the use of FlexaRail’s standard bow top around play areas. The system’s vertical tubular bar metal railings are available in a variety of
heights to allow taller panels to be created where physical security needs to be ramped up, creating a formidable barrier around nursery, school and playground perimeters.
And FlexaRail is purpose-built to offer outstanding perimeter protection on uneven ground, with revolutionary self-raking metal railings following the contours of steep gradients without the need for stepping.
Attractive designs also transform the aesthetics of playground settings, while low-maintenance features ensure the look is retained for the long-term.

Marshalls HVM products used to protect memorial site
Marshalls Landscape Protection, part of hard landscaping manufacturer Marshalls plc, has designed and supplied Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) solutions as part of a development commemorating Sikh soldiers who fought during the First World War, in Smethwick, West Midlands.
Having impressed on previous projects, and possessing a wealth of industry experience and expertise, Marshalls Landscape Protection were asked by Sandwell Council to be involved with the development.
To discuss this involvement is Dominic Renney, Specification Development Manager at Marshalls: “We were brought in to design and develop a number of protective elements
for the project, and to support the council with technical direction.”
During discussions between Marshalls and the council, it was decided that because the project is located next to two main roads, the design should include protection against potential vehicle collisions. Dominic explained the considerations that were made: “Being a place of memorial, we were fully aware that we had to protect the site as unobtrusively as possible.
“In agreement with the council, we specified products that would guarantee safety against vehicular threats discreetly, helping to keep people safe, not scared.”
To protect the site against potential threats, Marshalls’ RhinoGuard Protective Bollards, part of its Hostile Vehicle
Mitigation (HVM) product portfolio, were used to enclose the majority of the site’s perimeter. Specified in a stainless-steel finish with red reflective band, the bollards are fully crash tested in accordance with the BSI PAS 68 standard, capable of stopping a 7.5 tonne lorry traveling at 40mph completely in its tracks.
To introduce some additional greenery to the development, and to break up perimeter, Marshalls cast concrete BellitGiove Planters were also specified.
Manufactured using polished brown porphyry precious stone, the planters provided an elegant and visually appealing means to add shrubbery into the environment.

feedback for this new play park, and we are quite happy that Proludic supplied this particular job.”
A new outdoor playground has opened in Wallyford in East Lothian near the new local primary school and has already proved to be very popular with local children. The playground project is the result of a collaboration between Proludic who designed and supplied the play equipment and East Lothian Council as installers.
The Wallyford play area has a wide range of playground equipment designed for use by pre-school children through to teenagers. The final design was chosen by the pupils of Wallyford Primary School following a consultation. From a previously
underutilised piece of land, the new play space boasts 11 new items of play equipment that can now accommodate more than 100 children. Additionally, it offers 150 play values for children to interact with.
The client brief was for the space to include inclusive play equipment and nine pieces of equipment were included specifically for physical, cognitive and sensory impairments.
“We have dealt with Proludic for many years, probably 20 years,” said Amenity Technician, East Lothian Council, Dougie Fox. “We have had very positive
At this destination park, the central tree house is a large beacon that entices children and gives them a sense of discovery. Proludic was able to include some new innovative products for the first time in Scotland, like the new Ka’Yop unit and the cantilever swing, which add to the sense of wonder in this outdoor playground.
“The new play park is the latest to be installed by East Lothian Council and works continue to upgrade and improve other play areas around the county,” said Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Colin McGinn. “The Council currently provides, manages and maintains 120 equipped play areas throughout East Lothian to encourage healthy sociable play for young people.”

Sutcliffe Play helps in bringing a community together
All Play, the distributor for Sutcliffe Play in Ireland, was tasked with helping supply equipment to refurb an existing play space in Belfast earlier this year.
The aim was to bring the local community together and create an all-inclusive playground for children and adults to enjoy.
Working with Belfast City Council, they advised on which inclusive multi-play unit would be best suited in a new playground at the once popular site, Ormeau Park.
The project formed part of the vision to upgrade the space which was no longer compliant and had become non-economical
to keep repairing. Ormeau Park is now home to one of the biggest, brightest piece of inclusive play equipment available, the Voyage Unit, which can accommodate up to 45 users at one time.
The mammoth multi-level structure sits proudly at the centre of the playground, with inclusive play stations and a specially designed ramp to allow access for wheelchair users.
Along with its colourful exterior, the unit boasts multiple sensory elements and slides, including a scramble and slide ramp–a unique feature intended for users with reduced mobility to move up and down the ramp with the
use of ropes for aids. Popular swings and play panels make up the rest of the refurbishment, adding choice and variety for multiple age groups.
Catherine Weir from Belfast City Council said; “The site at Ormeau Park has always been a popular destination with families until the old equipment became worn and in need of repair.
“It’s great to see life back in the updated playground. The equipment from Sutcliffe Play exceeds our expectations! We’re sure the new playground will be loved for many years to come.”

A comprehensive range of compact tractors from John Deere
John Deere’s compact tractor range includes 13 models in six series ranging from 25 to 66hp.
In 2020 the company updated some of the range to meet the latest Stage V emissions regulations in Europe, which are designed to limit ultrafine particulate emissions in all engines above 25hp (19kW). John Deere’s compact tractors rated at 25hp and below–the 1026R, 2026R and 3025E–already met the necessary standards.
Other 2R and 3R Series models above 25hp got a new Yanmar 1.6-litre, three-cylinder TNV Series diesel engine that features a high torque reserve, providing plenty of power under heavy loads. This uses the latest engine technologies to improve fuel economy, control and accuracy, while also reducing environmental impact as well as operating costs.
It features a common rail system (CRS) and an electronic control unit (ECU), which continuously monitors engine conditions and adjusts fuel delivery to ensure optimum performance.
The engine’s new aftertreatment system consists of a diesel particulate fi lter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), similar to that used successfully on John Deere’s larger agricultural tractors.
This operates automatically to produce lower levels of exhaust emissions and reduced noise levels, and meets all current requirements for Stage V emission standards.
At the top of the John Deere compact tractor range, the 4052M and 4052R have a larger 2.1-litre, four-cylinder engine with DPF. This is the same as the
existing engine on the biggest 4066M and 4066R models.
The 3R and 4R Series compact tractors are equipped with a new eThrottle function integrated into the established eHydro transmission. This feature is designed make the tractor quieter and more comfortable to use, as well as more fuel efficient.
With the simple push of a button, engine speed is conveniently linked to the foot pedal position so that engine rpm and tractor speed can both be increased as the pedal is depressed.
On selected models, the awardwinning Hitch Assist system makes coupling up implements and trailers to the tractor’s rear
hitch or three-point linkage quicker, easier and safer.
Using this system, external switches mounted on the rear fender allow the operator to move the tractor backwards and forwards at a maximum speed of 12mm/second, and raise or lower the hitch as required.
Other advanced technology features on John Deere compact tractors include LoadMatch, MotionMatch and SpeedMatch operating modes for maximum versatility in a wide range of tractor applications, plus a choice of AutoConnect drive-over rotary mower decks.

Farmtrac reveals a best-seller for a compact performance
As Farmtrac’s dealership has expanded, one thing that has become apparent across the country is the popularity of the FT26 and FT26H tractors, distributor Reesink Agriculture reveals. Owning a smaller piece of land doesn’t mean you need less power, but it does mean you need to think about the size of your tractor.
That’s where Farmtrac’s FT26 and FT26H come in: the perfect options to get the job done in tighter areas without compromising on results.
The differences between the two models start and end with the FT26 sporting a threerange hydrostatic transmission instead of a mechanical one.
All the rest of the performance possibilities of each are the
same. Powerful and with highly fuel efficient three-cylinder engines, a choice of two transmission options including a three-range hydrostatic transmission with mid PTO bring the performance, but what about operating them?
Both models feature a wider platform with side-mounted shift gear levers, easy to view dash panel, power steering and four-wheel drive, which can be selected when maximum traction is required.
Add in high intensity projector lamps, side-mounted led lights, top-mounted beacon lamp and rear-working lamp mean work isn’t curtailed in winter months.
With no clutch system on the HST model, clutch wear is not a concern and with two directional
Ventrac makes capital gains
London Golf Club has taken delivery of the new Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor and selection of attachments to assist in the maintenance of their two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses near Brands Hatch in Kent.
Lee Sayers is the Golf Courses and Estate Manager and heads a team of 27 full-time staff and 15 part-time including two head greenkeepers, a workshop mechanic, irrigation technician and a gardener with 21 members of the team working on the golf course.
“Our members and guests expect a high level of presentation and
we try to maintain a manicured ‘look’ across the entire estate, so the Ventrac was an obvious choice, he added. “I’d seen lots of ‘noise’ about Ventrac in the press and on social media together with good feedback from my peer group across the county, especially Mark Todd at the Wildernesse.
“We had a really good demo and that just reinforced my opinion, so we purchased the tractor unit and four attachments; the Contour deck, Tough Cut deck, Turbine Blower and Power Brush.”
pedals to deal with – one for forward direction and one for reverse – there’s less fatigue for the operator.
Moreover, the FT26H comes equipped with cruise control as standard, making it easy to set a certain forward speed with just a push of a button.
To further their potential, their heavy-duty Category 1 threepoint linkage can be fitted with a series of attachments.
For added peace of mind, they come with a robust five-year warranty, supported by Reesink Agriculture, the award-winning UK distributor renowned and trusted for its servicing, maintenance and back-up.

twice a week,” explains course manager Mark Burniston.
“Then we have three ‘maintenance weeks’ a year when we can be spreading up to 60 tonnes of sand spreading on greens, approaches and tees, and using a Pro Core, along with monthly sand spreading and coring.”
“The LX is perfect for this as it has lots of power and will help us to keep up; I haven’t seen anything else on the market to compare.” The 40hp LX-401 has a three-range hydrostatic
transmission for easy operation which has proved popular with the club.
“It’s so convenient to drive around the course, and the cruise control is ideal to set a speed for work such as verti-draining and spraying.
“New features on the LX such as an A/B switch to preselect engine revs also save fuel and wear on the engine when moving between greens,” comments Mark.

Managing those wild flower areas
Well-maintained wild flower areas look an absolute picture in season, but keeping them looking like that long term needs careful management.
Competition from invasive grasses can reduce the effectiveness of the planting as well as needing to get as much seed return at the end of the season as possible to maximise regrowth and so have thicker plant populations in future.
As we head into August and the seed heads mature, this is the time of year where we need to look at mulching this year’s growth and getting as much seed shed as possible.
Mowing off those areas with the AMAZONE Groundkeeper or Profi hopper with the mulch flap inserted will achieve
maximum shredding and mulching leaving the residues on the ground for a week or two to ensure maximum seed return; running on the area then, and with the subsequent clearing up operation, should ensure good seed/soil contact.
Generally the leaner the soils, the better the wild flower population and so it pays then to collect the residues to reduce the organic matter left behind which will feed the soil and promote grass regrowth in competition of the flowering plants.
Inserting a scarifying knife into the SmartCut rotor will enable the bottom to be thinned out without scalping off those plants we want to thrive.

ISEKI mower collects the leaves at Wellingborough
After demonstrating a variety of different ride-on mowers, Steve Mackey, Head Greenkeeper at Wellingborough Golf Club, found the one he was looking for in the ISEKI SXG323+.
“We don’t have ties to any company, and we never will,” said the straight-talking Steve.
“We simply buy what does the job and the ISEKI mower does the job for us.”
Steve is the man in charge of the 18-hole, par 72 rolling parkland course situated at the 18th century Harrowden Hall in the heart of Northamptonshire.
The course, which hosts several premier PGA & county golf events, is positioned amongst five acres of beautifully
maintained gardens and woodlands. It is partly for this reason that Steve was looking for a new ride-on mower.
“With it being a parkland course and with a vast number of trees, we get a lot of fallen leaves on the formal gardens and on the course,” he said.
“Therefore, we needed a mower that could collect them quickly and efficiently through the season. In addition, we needed it for other work on the course such as collecting debris from scarifying tees, approaches, and general other tasks.”
The ISEKI SXG Range is the ultimate in cut and collection mowers and the newly designed SXG323 + offers power, performance, and unsurpassed
productivity. A 48” (1.22M) mower deck with wider overlapping provides a superior quality of cut while the large capacity, high torque 1123cc diesel engine is powerful and fuel efficient.
The new ergonomic design, increased leg room and dial-in height of cut adjustment all provide excellent operator comfort and the automotivestyle instrument panel gives clear information, including a fuel gauge.
Furthermore, the SXG323+ performs exceptionally even in the wet conditions, allowing you to work without the weather restricting you.

we should ensure their complete safety, not just during those exceptional circumstances, but at all times. These two decks in conjunction with the Ventrac eight-wheel tractor unit guarantee that when working on tee banks or around the reservoir, they can do so in complete safety.
“As a small team of just six, it’s important that we work smarter; so now we can cut areas mechanically using just one person, where we previously used numerous team members with brushcutters. This has saved us many greenkeeping hours that can now be utilised elsewhere on the course.
“The Tough Cut deck has helped us, both ecologically and aesthetically, keeping the woodland floor open and encouraging more spring bulbs to
flourish. Our goal is to see carpets of bluebells in subsequent years. Also, with the Contour deck we’ll be able to maintain steeper areas on the course making the presentation even more appealing for members and visitors. We’ve

Greener grasscutting boosted by EGO’s power
Battery powered equipment specialist EGO has made its first foray into ride-on mowers with the Z6 zero turn, and while it is principally aimed at the homeowner market, this nifty little machine could be a useful option for grounds maintenance contractors with large lawns on their books, especially where there are trees and other obstacles to negotiate.
The company also suggests that a commercial range will follow, so watch this space for more on that.
One of the clever points about EGO’s range is that batteries are largely interchangeable between the different tools, so when the mower is not in use, its batteries could be deployed on a hedgetrimmer or chainsaw, for example.
But if mowing is the main task, the Z6m will cut an area the size of two football pitches on one charge when equipped with six 12AH batteries; the minimum run power is a total of 15AH. Charging is via multiport charger and standard 13amp socket and takes three hours.
Operator platform layout is fairly standard: there’s stowage for small items, cup holder and USB socket for your phone.
The LED panel on the right hand console displays charging level and the operating mode selected – there’s a choice of ‘tortoise or hare’ drive speeds to a maximum of 12.8kph and four blade speeds to suit cutting preference or optimise battery life.
Control, standard or ‘sport’ modes can also be selected, which slightly confusingly, relate to the sensitivity of the levers rather than travel speed.
The blade switch – equivalent to the PTO on an engined mower
– is also on this console, and there’s the ‘device on’ switch becoming familiar for all modern electronics plus a key for security.
Charging level is also shown in sectors on an LED ‘power meter’ on the footplate which also indicates when the mower is ‘live’ with an operator on the seat, the park brake off and levers engaged.
Comfort has been prioritised with a hydraulically suspended seat with fore and aft adjustment – no reaching for the footplate or sitting in a cramped position.
Using the equivalent power of a 22hp petrol-engined mower, the 107cm twin blade side discharge deck can be fitted with a mulching plate and there is the option of a collecting bag; it will also tow up to 120kg. Deck height is adjustable via a lever from the seat from 25-100mm; it was stiff on the model we tested but will undoubtedly ease with use.
Removing two pins and disconnecting two leads is necessary to slide the deck out for inspection or maintenance. Designed for use on slopes up to 12deg, the Z6 feels stable in use, as comfortable as billed and with good all-round visibility.
Zero turn first timers would probably be best with the levers set to ‘control’ as they are pretty reactive –the operator needs only to hold them with the lightest touch to track straight rather than constantly overcorrect.
Cut quality is good, and for an area such as the small caravan site kindly provided by our hosts Dunn & Son Garden Machinery, a weekly trim to a high standard could be achieved very quickly indeed. The zero turn design and compact size means that the
Hartpury maximises efficiency
Embracing electric and improving efficiency were two of the standout reasons why Hartpury College and University turned to John Deere when it needed a new fleet of machines to help maintain a varied and challenging site.
Located in Gloucestershire, the 360-hectare campus is home to both Hartpury College and Hartpury University. Traditionally, the latter has been best known for its agricultural and land-based subjects, but in recent years the site has developed cutting-edge sports facilities, alongside the world’s largest equine educational facility. The
grounds team made the decision to switch providers when the challenge of maintaining the site proved too much for their existing kit. And both saving time and maximising efficiency are essential on a site with so many different demands.
In total, Hartpury has purchased six TE Gators, one 8800A surrounds mower, one 4066R tractor on galaxy turf tyres and a second 4066R on standard tyres with a 440R Loader, two Z994R with a 60” cutting deck and one 220SL greens mower.
John Deere Enquiry 52
mower can work easily round obstructions, and it made a tidy job around the shrubs and hedges on the site. One of the pluses of battery equipment is that there’s no need to store and handle fuel, which would certainly benefit
domestic users or contractors moving kit from site to site, although charging needs to be considered for a mobile operation. Absence of noise and emissions are other points; with a mower blade noise obviously
remains, although this can be useful in itself to alert bystanders to the presence of machinery; the mower also has running lights and headlights. A limp mode is activated at low charge to allow the mower to be driven
back for charging; the mower also shuts off automatically after 60 mins idling for more forgetful operators.

Major upgrades to offset mower
Major Equipment has upgraded its Verge Mower for extra durability and agility.
With full 140-degree movement and powerful shredding capabilities, the Verge Mower helps local authorities, highway maintenances teams and professional crews keep roadside verges and hedges in check.
The hydraulically controlled arm can go 35 degrees down into ditches and embankments and up 90-degrees to trim hedges, shrubs and trees in one fluid motion.
In offset mode, the 1.56m extension suits mowing under trees, around fences and other hard to reach areas.
Heavy duty gearboxes transmit power consistently to the blades, which ensures even cutting and mulching in light and heavy vegetation.
Added shock load protection within the gearboxes dampen vibration as well as protect the machine in the event of a collision.
Rubber skirting around the deck encases flying debris. With fewer wearing parts than flails, the Major Verge Mower is also easier to maintain and more cost effective to run.
The Major Verge Mower comes in two working widths. The 1.43m model (MJ36-140) has two rotors with eight blades. The 2.11m model (MJ36-210) has three rotors with twelve blades.
Cutting height can be easily adjusted from 15mm to 100mm. The mower folds vertically in transport mode to 1.60m width. The mower is rear mounted onto Class 2 tractors with options for left or right-hand maneuvering.
Made of high performance Strenx Steel and galvanized to ISO standards, the Major Verge Mower is an exceptional investment for the long-term.

Hedge and verge mowers in one versatile package
The Ventrac 4520 compact tractor is ideal for maintaining hedges, roadside verges and the edges of ponds and riverbanks in safety, as it is can tackle inclines of up to 30 degrees.
The Boom Mower is the perfect implement for groundscare applications as it’s the ideal tool for cutting back hedges, shrubs, saplings, reeds around pond edges and vegetation on riverbanks.
The reciprocating cutting head features a double action 91.4 cm (36 inch) sickle bar with an autolevelling system, keeping the head at the desired angle of cut for consistent operation.
Its out-front mounting provides excellent visibility and comfort for the operator and like all
Ventrac attachments it’s quick and easy to install and folds into itself for compact storage. Maintaining verges beside highways can result in lane closures and other safety measures, so time is of the essence.
The Ventrac 4520 with its choice of mowing decks is a highly productive combination allowing large areas to be mown, quickly and efficiently.
Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by hinged and removable covers. The tilt-up decks provide easy access to the heavy-duty blades that counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing.

New MA270 hydraulic mowing arm from Becx
Becx Machines is the Netherlands-based manufacturer of high-end mechanical hedge cutting equipment for tool carriers and excavators.
Established in 2008, the company is located in Moergestel, North Brabant, and are represented in the UK by Fentons of Bourne in Lincolnshire.
Becx has a range of seven different hedge trimming attachments with a working widths between 75cm and 240 cm.
In order to optimally operate these cutting heads, they have also developed their own mowing arms, which connect the cutting head to the tool carrier. The latest addition to the range is the MA270 with a reach of
270 cm, but more importantly, it can be used both left and right of the carrier vehicle as the arm is hydraulically rotatable through 180 degrees.
This enables the machine to operate in tight spaces, especially relevant when the hedge has corners.
The standard version of the implement coupling, where the arm meets the cutting head, can be turned manually, but it can also be fitted with a hydraulic swivel unit.
A ‘fixed’ head can also be chosen, which makes pruning the back of the hedge more accessible.
The MA270 provides the operator with freedom of movement, regardless of the model. The
machine has also been built to be as compact and light as possible without making concessions to quality. The frame is made from high grade steel, while the connecting pins are manufactured using chrome steel, for extra durability.
With a reach of 2.7 metres, the design of this machine makes it possible to work stably at maximum height, as well as closer to the machine.
Fentons director, Glen Bellamy said: “The Becx design engineers are highly innovative and the MA270 is a testament to the quality equipment they continue to produce. For hedge cutting solutions they are the best.”

Spearhead’s professional hedge cutters continue to raise the bar
Cited as the most robust machine on the market, Spearhead has again modernised the program for 2023 making an electric control system optional on every model.
Adding additional comfort it is now possible to specify the touch screen ProPilot electric system on any Pro or Flex series machine whilst further down the range, on the Compact, Classic and Mid ranges the Minipilot system can be specified.
The ProPilot offers endless functionality. Switch user
profiles, adapt your speed, or finetune cutting parameters –all from a couple of touches on the screen. This is futuristic control today.
Constantly collaborating with customers, Spearhead continues to enhance its Twiga portfolio at every level.
For example, in the updated Twiga Pro series a new 7.4 metre telescopic VFR arm can provide further forward reach whilst working closer to the tractor, an innovation that compliments the exclusive Twiga Flex series in terms
of functionality to meet all aspects of user preference.
“Every Twiga enhancement is designed to deliver operational benefits to our customers. It’s that simple.
“We constantly gather user feedback and act on it. This, we believe keeps the Twiga series at the forefront,” comments Michael Ball, Senior Twiga Design Engineer at the Worcestershire based company.

The agria 9600 remote banks mower hits the demo trail
Distinctive, and not too dissimilar in looks to a mini tank, the 1200 cm wide agria 9600 cuts and mulches on a variety of applications, including fine turf.
However, its remarkable performance on slopes up to 55 degrees is what has attracted huge plaudits from Health & Safety managers. A handheld control pad allows its operator
to stand 100 metres away, in an entirely safe location, while it works productively without fuss.
Clever design gives it a wide assured stance. The tracks are at the absolute edges, the equivalent of an infinity display on a smart phone, and with its low centre of gravity, even on the steepest of gradients, it remains steady. As a rotary, it cuts in
either direction, so there’s no wasted effort spinning it around. Its no-nonsense approach saves time, and vitally, turf damage.
Electric ‘hybrid drive’ embraces the need to be environmentally friendly. The agria 9600 is available from Wiedenmann UK dealers across the UK & Ireland.

Stylish Sirius for Tottenham’s grounds manager
The role of head groundsman is pivotal at any facility, but especially one the size of Tottenham Hotspur’s.
That’s why the club has recently invested in the Sirius, an electric buggy from STAR EV for its Head of Playing Surfaces and Estates.
Darren Baldwin has been at the club in North London for 26 years and has 18 acres to get around including 15 grass pitches and the world’s first dividing retractable stadium pitch, and a team of 45 to manage, so it was essential he had his own transport – and for that the STAR EV Sirius 2+2 was perfect.
Unlike other brands that repurpose fleet cars, the Sirius was designed specifically as a personal transportation vehicle. As well as for his own use, Darren also uses the Sirius to
host VIP tours and that’s when the quality of the Sirius really comes to the fore.
The Sirius joined the club alongside a fleet of 18 other all-electric work machines
and ambulance vehicles and is probably as big a leap from the technology present at the club when he started as could be.
