Green infrastructure scheme wins prestigious landscape award
TACP Landscape Architects has won the President’s Award at the Landscape Institute’s annual awards for its Green Infrastructure Action Plan for Pollinators in South East Wales.
The plan will support and inspire landscape projects on public land to redress the decline in biodiversity and provide environments favouring pollinators.
Over the past two decades, bee numbers have declined worldwide. The evidence is clear that bees and other pollinators are less healthy and abundant than they have been and if action

It has been another successful and enjoyable year, albeit with the usual set of challenges sent to try us all.
Some of the challenges we faced in 2016 were familiar – such as budget cuts and a lack of central government investment in our industry – and some were new. Indeed one of the biggest question marks from 2016 will continue to provide challenges throughout 2017 and beyond.
The impact of Brexit remains the great unknown for us all. But what has been refreshing since the Referendum vote is the approach adopted by our industry.
Whereas the construction industry has become very introspective, there has been a definite “business as usual” attitude adopted in our industry. Without doubt Brexit will have a significant impact on our industry, not least because of the close ties many of our manufacturers enjoy with Europe and the big export market it provides. Yet until a clear map is prepared by our political leaders, it makes more sense to continue to do business and make contingency plans for whatever the future might hold.
Despite this uncertainty, by and large 2016 can be marked down as a successful year.
It started in what has now become traditional style with the buzz and enthusiasm generated by BTME 2016 and started to draw to a close with SALTEX 2016. At the time of going to print, we were still awaiting the official figures on this year’s event – the NEC certainly seemed busy and many exhibitors are reporting good business from the two days.
We now look forward to the new year and another Harrogate boost provided by BTME 2017.
For TSP Media and Landscape & Amenity Product Update, 2017 also promises to be a big year. We will be launching our new quarterly Professional Groundscare supplement in January and our dynamic new website will continue to evolve and provide an invaluable online resource for the industry.
EditorDennis G860 the ‘mower of choice’
Nottingham Forest FC grounds manager Ewan Hunter and his assistant Matt Tietjen has claimed that the Dennis G860 is the club’s mower of choice.
The pitch at the City Ground Stadium is highly regarded winning numerous awards and has consistently been in the top five pitches in the Sky Bet Championship.
As part of the maintenance programme in preparing the pitch at the City Ground, Ewan, Matt and their other seven members of staff rely on the Dennis G860.
The G860 has 11 quick changeover cassette options giving ultimate flexibility and a single power unit for many day-to-day maintenance tasks
– something which Matt is particularly impressed with.
“On the G860 we’ve got the eight bladed cutting cassette which we use to cut down to 25mm for match days and we use the sorrel roller as and when required,2 says Ewan.
“We’ve got the brush cassettes which we will use after a game to clean the surface up and we use the verti-cutter cassette once or twice a month during the growing season.”
The G860 also features a large diameter front roller with an adjustable scraper which has been designed for a precise height of cut control, giving an excellent finish – something which is essential for a club of Nottingham Forest’s stature.

Ground Control honoured with Queen’s Award for Innovation
Back in October, Ground Control was presented with the prestigious Queen’s Award for Innovation.
The award recognises not only the innovations the company brings to the industry, but the hard work and dedication of its workforce in delivering an outstanding service to customers.
As Marcus Watson, Managing Director of Ground Control, says the progress Ground Control has made as a business since we started in 1973 has exceeded all expectations.
“Driven through a continuous process of innovation, excellent service delivery and customer focus, we have diversified into a wide variety of sectors according to our customers’ requirements,” he added. “Our ambition is to enrich and improve our offering constantly and become the undisputed partner of choice for our customers.
“The reason for our continued growth is twofold: firstly, we single-mindedly focus on retaining the loyalty of customers by continually delivering an outstanding customer experience. Whilst we might win on price, we retain on the quality of our service. Secondly, we make sure
we attract, develop and retain a team of exceptional people who get a kick out of delivering to their customers, each and every day. Without either of these, our impressive 20% year-on-year growth simply would not have been possible.
“Overall, the strategy to underpin our desire to consistently meet customers’ evolving needs is our expanding range of services. This has always been a part of an ongoing effort across the business to not just integrate processes and systems, but importantly to share our values and gain buy-in to our success across the organisation.”
With UK unemployment currently around 5%, it is at the lowest rate since 2015. However, in the next two years, there could be a constriction in the supply of labour due in part to skilled EU workers choosing to stay put whilst the impact of Brexit plays out.
“This will need monitoring by Government as it plans the route forward to keep the UK a fully operational European country,” adds Marcus. “In addition, as an organisation with its roots fully planted in the UK, Ground Control is doing everything it can to support its workforce through this changeable period.”

Wiedenmann Core Recycler impresses in STRI trials
Independent trials confirm that Wiedenmann’s Core Recycler can save 40% of top dressing inputs.
Results released by the Sports Turf Research Institute also state that turf treated with the Core Recycler had significantly lower disease incidence and that the recycling of cores helps maintain a significantly higher active bacterial and fungal population.
The Core Recycler is a revolutionary machine which collects and recycles hollow cores. Fresh cores are lifted via a rotating brush and processed through a series of four adjustable steel mesh sieves which move in sequence.
The sieves can be set to accommodate different core lengths and diameters. As the hollow cores are propelled along the sieves, the soil and sand content is separated from the fibrous material. The soil and sand mix falls back to the ground while the less desirable fibrous material is collected in a hopper. After separation the indigenous ‘good’ material can be returned to the surface.
Two test areas of a sand soil based green [80:20] were created at the STRI’s Bingley HQ in West Yorkshire. Hollow tining took
Etesia launches electric start pedestrian mower
Etesia has launched the Duocut 46 RMBE pedestrian mower, which features the new Briggs and Stratton 775iS Series Instart engine.
The Briggs and Stratton 775iS Series DOV InStart engines represent the ultimate performance package. They naturally incorporate the heritage attributes of power, performance and reliability, but add the most innovative
and easiest starting ever seen on a lawnmower.
The Etesia Duocut 46 RMBE is a single speed machine with a cutting width of 46cm.
As with all rotary mowers in the Duocut range, it offers low vibrations combined with high performance, quality cut and reliability. Extremely versatile, the new model is capable of mowing with or without
collection in all conditions, or for high-quality mulching - without the need for an accessory.
The high performance is possible thanks to the Duocut concept which is the perfect combination between 100% collection and 100% mulching decks, without compromising the results of either of the functions.
Changing the mowing system is easy: just place the removable
insert under the deck if you want to mulch. Remove the insert if you prefer to mow with or without collection.
The insert completes the shape of the deck to form a smooth surface with no roughness, allowing the grass to move easily for incomparably superior mulching.
Etesia Enquiryplace on both plots and afterwards one area had the cores lifted manually with medium grade sand brushed in to make good the surface levels, while the other plot had the Core Recycler lift cores and return indigenous sand soil mix to the surface before also being topped up with sand.
Another finding from the STRI research was that, when coupled
with appropriate nutrient inputs, the core recycled area had a greener colouration. The main reasons given for this were the release of nutrients from the recycled material, in addition to elevated microbial community facilitating nutrient release and uptake.

Plant experts call for industry-wide adoption of Invasives Code
Experts in Japanese knotweed remediation are urging the industry to subscribe to the Invasives Code, following its recently announced renaming.
Formerly known as the Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) Code, it is set by The Invasive Non-Native Specialists Association (INNSA) to provide quality assurance and set industry standards, which are independently assessed.
Japanese Knotweed Control, one of the UK’s first specialist remediation companies and a founder member of INNSA, is calling for all non-native plant remediation specialists to subscribe in a bid to boost standards in the industry.
The Invasives Code requires subscribers to meet demanding technical standards set by INNSA, and sets out minimum warranty and insurance requirements, consumer service levels, and complaint handling process. All members must also meet the independently assessed ISO 9001 and 14001 standards
under Amenity Assured, run by Government-backed independent standards institute BASIS.
The renaming of the Code is intended to make it clearer to consumers and businesses, especially property professionals, what the Code is about.
Japanese Knotweed Control has been at the forefront of encouraging the highest possible standards within the industry since it was founded in 2004.
Managing Director David Layland explains: “The renaming of the Invasives Code gives greater transparency to the clients of subscribers, providing clients with greater peace of mind. This will build confidence as property owners, alongside professions and industries that serve them, know they are assured of top quality service.”
The Code is regulated by the independent Property Codes Compliance Board (PCCB).

Dakota redesign electronic control panel
Dakota has redesigned and refined their famous electronic control panel to it easier to use as the range continues to be the most versatile, cost-effective, and accurate material handlers on the market.
Campey Turf Care Systems 16year association with Dakota has seen a host of innovations on the Turf Tender machines, with the latest control panel upgrade a clear signal of the company’s intent to continue innovating.
A number of upgrades have been to the panel to make it meet the demands required. The first is the universal RAM mount that allows you to attach the display at a point convenient to you. This makes using the new features within the panel extremely user friendly. This display contains reference guides for adjusting the spinner paddles and rate settings, helping to provide the most even spread possible.
Campey Turf Care Systems Enquiry 17Research identifies plugs as answer to healthy soil ecosystems
A first-of-its-kind PhD study was recently conducted with University of Sheffield’s Animal and Plant Science Centre to identify the best way to ensure that beneficial micro-organisms thrive on green roofs.
How to introduce microorganisms on to a green roof in a beneficial and cost-effective way has long been a problem for green roof specialists.
These valuable microbes, bacteria and fungi combine to improve plant nutrient uptake, which means that flowering performance on a green roof is likely to benefit. They can also help plants develop natural resilience to stressful conditions, to which they are subjected in a rooftop environment.
In the first analysis of its kind, Boningale GreenSky sponsored
PhD researcher, Dr Tom Young, to scientifically investigate with experts at University of Sheffield’s Animal and Plant Science Centre, how microscopic creatures can best be introduced to a sterile roof substrate.
“Beneficial soil organisms perform many functions which influence soil fertility and plant health,” explains Maggie Fennell, Head of Boningale GreenSky. “Substrate mixes are known to have a low level of biological activity which makes plants more susceptible to stress and disease.
“Our study found that applying arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculum directly throughout the substrate is expensive and not very effective. However, applying SRD inoculum to the plugs, or growing plants in pre-inoculated plugs,
is a far better way to ensure that the micro-organisms establish successfully and form a biological relationship with the plant.
“AMF is a specific type of micro-organism that helps plant roots take up nutrients and our production team combine it with additional beneficial bacteria and organisms that make the plants more naturally resistant to disease. The inoculum is watered onto the plants as they grow, beginning a symbiotic relationship that sustains both the plants and the microbes.
“We use a range of carefully audited “Species rich diversity” (SRD) products which redress the imbalance in the green roof growing medium.
“This is a proven organic method that has been successfully used
by our nursery, Boningale Nurseries, to improve plant health and reduce the effect of pests and diseases, with minimal chemical intervention.”
The findings from the study are a significant development because they provide further information on the organic building blocks of a natural, healthy ecosystem, which is one of the key drivers of green roofs.
Boningale Nurseries Enquiry 15Albutt make bag filling simple
Albutt, the attachment specialist has introduced a new product to simplify bag filling.
Suitable for filling tote bags with any free flowing material, the attachment can be used with any telehandler or loader. Bag filling speed is high, 40 bags per hour is easily achieved.
The absence of any product spill during the filling process ensures all yard surfaces are kept clean and waste eliminated.
Filling cycle times are low as the bag detaches from the securing hooks without the need for the operator to leave the machine. Loading vehicles with filled bags is another use for this attachment.
Other uses for the bag filler
include loading material directly into trailers, pickups and vans.
Long term reliability is a key feature of the design. The trap doors are controlled hydraulically from the machine cab, with a direct acting system that does not require operator adjustment. Trap doors are operated by the direct acting hydraulic ram control system.
Materials such as sand, aggregates, bark, animal feed, top soil and any free flowing material are handled easily.
The Albutt Bag Filler is the cost effective and reliable solution to bag filling.

Makita tools help finalists of WorldSkills UK
The UK’s largest skills show held at the NEC Birmingham, 17 – 19 November, included the final of the APL WorldSkills UK competition in Landscaping, organised by the Association of Professional Landscapers, designed to select Britain’s entrants to the WorldSkills Competition in Russia in 2019.
Makita has supported this competition for a number of years and has provided a comprehensive inventory of drills, impact drivers, mitre saws and petrol disc cutters.
This year the seven finalists used Makita tools during the two and a half day landscape garden build. The test piece layout was designed by the Association of Professional Landscapers, APL, to examine the skills levels of the competitors in both hard and soft landscaping. Cobble paving had to be laid; wood trellis work cut and assembled on site; decking fixed into position; slabs cut and laid; turf and plants installed to the design brief and marked to international standards.
The professional judges awarded the Gold medal to 27 year old Jake Botting, who works in the landscape industry and studies at Myerscough College.

Enquiry 20Souters Sports get the game on
After Partick Thistle FC had four games cancelled last season due to a waterlogged pitch, head groundsman Alan Findlay knew that it was time to take action.
He found the solution he was looking in specialist sports turf contractor Souters Sports.
It is probably fair to say that Alan has had his work cut out throughout his six years as head groundsman at the Firhill Stadium. When he first started working at the club, rugby union team Glasgow Warriors were also tenants, which meant that he was tasked with maintaining a dual purpose pitch for both rugby and football.
Glasgow Warriors eventually departed from Firhill in 2013 but the damage had already taken its toll.
“The winter was horrendous last year and we had to have four home games postponed due to a waterlogged pitch,” he said. “Every game that we lost was probably £20,000 in revenue we missed out
on, so although we’d have to pay to install a new pitch and drainage system – we hoped that it would actually prevent us from missing out on that lost revenue.
“The job went to tender and Souters Sports, who were one of the companies in the frame, did a similar job at St Johnstone FC recently. With that in mind I suggested the club go with Souters. The fact that they work with pretty much every football club in Scotland gave me even more confidence.”
Alan admitted that the short window in which Souters had to work was a cause for concern, but as he revealed, they certainly didn’t let him down.
“My main concern was that the pitch renovations had to be completed within two weeks,” he added. “Souters promised me that the job would be done in that time and fair play to them - it was, and to an excellent standard.”

“This type of display has advantages over the flower beds that we used to have in that, it is low cost, itakes only a few minutes to sow the seed and once
the seed germinates the flowers take care of themselves.”
Lossiemouth councillor John Cowe said the displays were a welcome innovation, all the more so since they were low cost and required little maintenance.
“That is obviously a major consideration given the council’s financial position,” he said. “Sowing wildflowers to brighten up their own areas is maybe something that local community groups could think about for next season.”

Only three years ago operations manager Kevin Matthews vowed to turn St Neots Town Council’s existing fleet of machinery Toro red, following the purchase of a CT2120, which impressed with its “superb” quality of cut.
In August Kevin accomplished just that with the purchase of two durable Groundsmaster 3400 out-front rotary mowers.
The Council, whose grounds team of nine maintains a range of sites in Cambridgeshire, decided to invest in new machines when assigned more grounds to cover. Kevin says: “We needed something robust and the Toro GM3400 ticks all the boxes.”
Kevin was convinced it would be the machine for the job after attending an onsite demonstration at Reesink Turfcare: “Seeing the GM3400 up close and having Danny Lake [Toro distributor
Reesink Turfcare rep] show what it can do made us realise just how brilliant it is. Reesink also managed to loan us a machine while our order was processed, which was an unexpected bonus!”
For Kevin, the main benefits of the machines include low running costs, reliability, ease of operation, ease of maintenance, and operator’s comfort. He says: “The machine is designed with the operator in mind, meaning my employees can be out all day and not suffer from fatigue.”
He goes on to say that with the GM3400s there’s “no need to worry about breakdowns because the reliability and build quality of these machines are second-to-none. Combine this with the back-up service from Reesink and you’ve got a world-leading formula.”
The GM3400s will primarily be used for Cambridgeshire County
Council’s roadside verges, where Kevin believes the machines will enable him to do the job efficiently and keep the grass looking beautiful.
This time round Kevin opted for the GM3400 because it’s as easy to operate as the CT2120, but it’s also a road-legal machine. He says: “The GM3400 came with a road-legal pack that includes lights and indicators, amongst other things. With this road
pack the GM3400s are not far from being cars, and I can relax knowing my employees are safe.”
All of this has transformed the work lives of the grounds team at St Neots Town Council and, thanks to their reliability and performance, Kevin feels certain he will continue to invest in Toro machines exclusively.

Toro LT-F3000 is twice the machine
Machinery Enquiry 43
A new Toro attachment for the LT-F3000 triple flail mower was revealed for the first time.
The interchangeable cylinder attachment gives the front-facing triple mower the capability to cut two ways.
When it launched at SALTEX last year, the LT-F3000 from Reesink Turfcare offered a completely new cutting concept to triple mowing, giving users a chance to cut
longer, wetter and coarser grass in one sweep.
The new attachment only serves to strengthen that position by adding value and giving the machine a dual purpose – one machine can now do the job of two – and a machine that was originally intended as a flail mower can now cut as a cylinder mower with more power than its sister mower, the LT3000.

There are always areas where mowing is unpleasant
or unsafe for the operator, including steep terrain, loose substrate, mowing under trees and bushes, along hedges. AS Motor has the solution - the NEW AS 940 Remote Control offers all the benefits of the standard AS 940 but with the option to convert to remote control with a 300m range when required.

ECHO is the torque of NEC
This year’s ECHO stand had a theme of High Torque power, featuring the ECHO range of commercial grade high torque brushcutters.
Attracting a great deal of interest throughout the show, this new generation of brushcutter has a 1:2 gear reduction ratio to deliver up to 50% more torque at the cutting head, compared to
previous models. This means a high torque brushcutter provides the same cutting performance as a larger machine, but with a smaller, lightweight engine.
The event proved to be the ideal venue for the introduction of the first of ECHO’s new Lithium Ion product range which includes a power blower, hedge trimmer and brushcutter.
Delivering similar performance levels to that of the petrol counterparts, the Lithium Ion products have considerably lower noise and emission levels, making them ideally suitable for use in noise sensitive and emission regulated areas.
The other new product on display was the ECHO CS-2511TES Top-Handle chainsaw which
ECHO say has been designed with the professional arborist in mind. It is the lightest and most compact top-handle chainsaw in the ECHO range and as such can be used for longer periods without fatigue.
ECHO products are manufactured by the Yamabiko Corporation, a leading Japanese manufacturer of professionalquality, outdoor power equipment for over 60 years. ECHO are extremely confident in their machines, offering a twoyear professional warranty or five-year domestic use warranty, a clear testament to the durability of the equipment.
ECHO is distributed by Ariens Company Limited across the UK through a network of authorised, ‘bricks and mortar’ dealerships.

Quomps Splash and Play Park
Before the summer of 2016 Star Rubber Environmental Ltd took on the over haul of resurfacing both the main play park and the splash park on Christchurch quomps. Covering over 1200m2 and under tight time scales the team were hard pushed to design and carry out the resurfacing work.
‘Stretch Your Imagination, Let Us do the rest’
Originally the councillors were happy to settle with a surface similar to what they had before, block colours of blues, and greens. However with the large open spaces and idyllic location we were determined to achieve the ultimate ‘WOW FACTOR’ with;
• Raised and soft Sand dunes under the water jets
• Sparkling sand
• Kerbed and filled steps
• Flowing blue River surfacing linking play park to splash park
Using the highest quality materials and with a stretch of imagination the children in living and visiting Christchurch have one of the best and safest play spaces in the country.
With sand dunes doubling up as a raised area keeping kids out of the water, like an island, yet keeping them safe as its extra soft should there be any falls.
The Star Kerb was used with the EPDM, meaning the old problem of slippery steps; bumps and burses were no longer an issue.
“Cheers, it looks amazing…REALLY AMAZING”
Matthew Reeks, Christchurch and East Dorset Council
Star Kerb:
Star Kerb has been designed by Star Rubber Ltd to create the perfect edge for laying wet pour onto a hard surface, steering clear of the traditionally risky chase cut and totally irradiating the age old problem of thermal shrinkage. Providing a firm vandal resistant edge as well as a distinct clean finish to the surface, which also stands as a demarcation point for the start of the surface. Star Kerb can be used in collaboration with a new surface or also help repair existing surfaces.
Star Cover:
The Star Cover is a quick and easy solution for the use of surfacing over existing drains and manhole covers removing unsightly iron works and erasing the costly construction fees. This enables the original drain to remain fully accessible for maintenance, whilst punched wholes in the bottom of the drain cover increase drainage and greatly reduce pooling. Available in various sizes and depths the Star Cover is zinc and powered coated with a uniquely designed lifting system, which acts as an anti tamper and anti finger trap whilst a double rolled edge gives you a very soft feel under foot.

Leading groundscare machinery distributor Etesia UK has taken on the distribution for the Oeliatec environmentallyfriendly weed control range in the UK and Ireland.
The Oeliatec Company, based in Brittany France, has developed machines for environmentallyfriendly weed control, without the use of any chemicals. Economic and ecological, Oeliatec offers you innovative weed control solutions.
Thermal weed control or killing weeds with hot water causes the explosion of plant cells and the breakdown of proteins. Hot water weed control requires fewer treatments compared to traditional chemical treatments and cost’s significantly less in comparison to other alternatives. All Oeliatec weed control machines kill weeds with 100% hot water by delivering an efficient low pressure treatment at temperatures of up to 120°C.
This destroys the cellular structure of the weed to kill off the plant. The intense heat penetrates deep into the root system killing the plant from the leaf down to the root. It is effective with all broad leaf plants and grass along with moss
and algae which can also be removed at the same time.
Etesia UK is confident that the Oeliatec products will prove just as popular among UK local authorities as the Etesia and Pellenc brands have been over the past twenty-five years. With five models available, customers will not only be able to control weeds, moss and algae but also remove graffiti and chewing gum from streets, paths and walk ways.
Commenting on the news that Oeliatec will be joining Etesia UK’s product range, Les Malin, operations director says: “Oeliatec is a superb addition to our already extensive offering, complementing our Etesia and Pellenc brands. We are extremely excited and look forward to working with Oeliatec to develop the business together in the coming months and years and further expanding the Etesia UK market place.”
Etesia UK has a comprehensive dealer network throughout the UK and Ireland where the Oeliatec products will be available from. However, specialist cleansing partners will also be recruited.
GKB enhance turfcare range
GKB Machines enjoyed a busy exhibition with three of the company’s machines creating a draw to the stand.
On display were GKB’s Combinator, the Rotobrush and the Quick Clean.
The Combinator, now a wellknown machine in the UK, is designed to combine frase mowing and verticutting grass areas, typically sports
turf, removing and loading the complete upper layer of unwanted turf. On uneven surfaces the Combinator frase mower removes all irregularities for a perfectly level result. The cut material is loaded by conveyor belts to a trailer on the move.
A new machine, the Rotobrush RB120 is designed to rejuvenate and maintain sports field artificial turf and help keep it
in top condition. Dirt collecting between the fibres encourages algae growth and reduces drainage, causing deterioration.
The Rotobrush offers a quick and easy method of removing dirt in a single pass, with a closed deck to prevent loss of collected infill material, to bring a heavily compacted surface back to life.
Quick Clean is a threepoint CAT I/ II PTO operated machine for quick and thorough cleaning of artificial turf, sweeping up leaves, branches and dirt in a single pass. It uses a depth adaptable brush and shaking screen system to deposit dirt into a waste bin. The screens are interchangeable to allow filtering of different grain sizes such as sand, rubber, cork and TPE.

Otterbine jets in to Birmingham
Otterbine’s Fractional five-inone aerating system has the highest performance rate of any fractional aerator on the market.

Germinal Enquiry 88Synthetic success at Bloxham School
Tom Hall, deputy head groundsman at Bloxham School in Oxfordshire has reported excellent results from using SISIS equipment to maintain the school’s two synthetic sports surfaces.
Standards are extremely high, as you would expect at a school of Bloxham’s stature, and equally impressive are the first-class sports facilities.
As well as a plethora of grass sports pitches, Bloxham also features two synthetic surfaces, and to maintain these the grounds team relies on a range of SISIS equipment.
“Here at Bloxham, one of the synthetic surfaces is sand filled and the other is sand dressed. Predominantly we use the surfaces for hockey, but during the summer, we also have tennis, and in some circumstances we use it for cricket.”
“We use two pieces of SISIS equipment to maintain our synthetic surfaces - the SSS1000 Sweeper and the SISIS Twinplay Implement Frame, complete with a straight and zig-zag Brush.”
The SISIS SSS1000 is a tractor mounted sweeper which can be pulled by any machine. There are no tools required for the adjustment of the brush or the angle of the draw bar and to make storage easy the draw bar lifts to an upright position. With an aluminium hopper with stainless steel mesh, any infill that is collected when using the machine is returned back down to the surface leaving it free from contamination of debris.
The SISIS Twinplay tractor mounted implement frame can be fitted with several attachments for the maintenance of synthetic surfaces and Tom chooses to attach the SISIS straight brush and the SISIS zig-zag brush –which he claims “do exactly what they are supposed to.”

Wiedenmann double for golf links
A club with a mission has invested in both a Wiedenmann Super 500 and a Terra Rake 2.3m.
Nairn Dunbar Golf Links has put in place a rough management programme with these two machines central to its success.
Richard Johnstone, Course Manager at the Highland club which lies on the headland just 20 minutes from Inverness airport, has a 2-3 year plan that will significantly thin the rough and give the course more definition, while noticeably speeding up play for members.
The Super 500 met Richard’s brief because it completes three essential processes in one
operation, flail mowing, scarifying and collecting the arisings.
The Terra Rake 2.3m with its aggressive spring tines is its perfect partner, loosening and removing debris from the bottom of the canopy in advance, while a champion scarifier in its own right.
The team of five at Nairn Dunbar are no strangers to the Wiedenmann brand having owned a Wiedenmann Terra Spike XP aerator for 15 years which is still going strong, reaffirming the decision for the new machines.

All equipment has been selected to accommodate the large number of visitors that Odds Farm regularly gets during busy periods.
Tribute to the fallen
Britain’s largest poppy painted on a sportsfield helped launch a Royal British Legion `Live On` regional remembrance appeal.
A dedicated linemarking team from turf technologists Vitax Supaturf took two full days to create the eyepopping emblem, measuring an impressive 45m x 35m, on one of the football pitches at Rothwell Juniors
FC in Leeds. The poppy was applied in Vitax’s own red, green and black Stadia Colours linemarking paints. Those wishing to make a donation can visit www.britishlegion.org.uk where they can pledge cash to boost the Royal British Legion’s fundraising drive.
