LI Awards celebrates positive impact of landscape professions The LI Awards celebrated its 30th anniversary this year with ‘Challenging Public Health Inequalities Across Bradford District’, a wide-ranging scheme by Bradford Metropolitan District Council, taking home the prestigious President’s Award. The award, presented by President-Elect of the Landscape Institute, Carolin Göhler, recognised the achievemnts of a project that also won the ‘Excellence in Public Health and Wellbeing’ category and tackles public health disparities by integrating green and blue infrastructure, highlighting the vital role of the environment in health outcomes. Rooted in participatory and cocreation principals and extensive research, its focus is on the social value of better public health and wellbeing within urban areas. With a scope extending from policy and planning to design, implementation and beyond, it is an example of what a landscapeled approach can offer in the public sector.

Mayfield Park, Manchester (pictured), a project by Studio Egret West, won two Awards, for ‘Excellence in Landscape Design’ and ‘Excellence in Place Regeneration’, after also being shortlisted for ‘Excellence in Climate, Environment and Social Outcomes’ and ‘Excellence in Biodiversity Conservation and Enhancement’.

“It is a true exemplar of how landscape can benefit people, place and nature with good community health research, policy making, design, and implementation, with close community liaisons and management of green spaces,” she explained. “I want to thank all the entrants that took part, as well as the

judging panels and the many volunteers, and congratulate all the winners – the future of landscape is bright.” Robert Hughes, Acting CEO, Landscape Institute, said: “We at the LI are so pleased to see such a continued high standard of entries. The projects highlighted a wide range of our members’ work,

as well as the wider industry’s diverse skills and attributes, with many of the projects reflecting the urgent need to combat social inequality, climate change and the biodiversity emergency with progressive and nature and placebased solutions.” Landscape Institute Enquiry 1

Meanwhile, both PRP and The Paul Hogarth Company won two awards each. PRP won the ‘Building with Nature National Award’, for its scheme Pydar, and ‘Excellence in Collaboration, Engagement and Influence’ for Dementia Friendly Design. The Paul Hogarth Company won ‘Excellence in Masterplanning and Urban Design’ with Letterkenny 2040 and ‘Excellence in Small Landscape and Garden Design’ for Glenkinchie Distillery. Carolin Göhler said she was delighted to award the President’s Award to such an innovative, entrepreneurial, and deserving winner in the public sector.

DECEMBER 2023

Welcome... Two down, one to go. The jury is still out on whether the industry wants or can cope with three main trade shows and we may not even get a definitive answer after BTME in January. There were quite a few opinions floating around the exhibition hall at NEC Birmingham on where the future lies for such industry shows. As the GMA confirmed attendance figures for SALTEX 2023, which were down on the last couple of events, and ironically acknowledged the potential impact of stormy weather on the indoor event, organisers of GroundsFest were quick to outline their plans for the 2024 version of the event and acknowledge a few improvements following visitor and exhibitor feedback.

Contents: Industry News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3

SALTEX continued to provide the tried and trusted mix of large exhibition stands and packed seminar programme, which undoubtedly continues to draw in visitors for the two days.

Product News . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4-5

But there is no doubting that the mix of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at GroundsFest has captured the imagination of many in the industry. With the 2024 event taking place earlier in September, the prospect of better weather on both days has increased and that will allow many exhibitors to properly demonstrate their products – something which visitors to this year’s event also seemed to appreciate, even getting hands-on during the wind and rain of the opening day.

Product of the Year 2023 . . . . . . . 6-8

For now, we start to look ahead to BTME 2024 and a return to the familiar multi-level exhibition space, major education programme and of course not forgetting the very familiar streets, bars and restaurants of Harrogate.

& Pedestrianisation . . . . . . . . . . . . 9-10

Clearly there is significant overlap in all three major events, but they also all manage to bring something different to the table for both exhibitors and visitors alike. It is unlikely there will be significant change in the exhibition calendar, yet. Thank you once again to everyone who has continued to support us during 2023 and we would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Best of the Best UK award-winners announced

A project to make a city park welcoming to older girls is among 10 park-based schemes to win a 2023 Best of the Best title, in a scheme operated by Green Flag Award. The accolade rewards the staff, volunteers or projects that have made a real difference in some of the UK’s 2,216 parks that have a Green Flag Award the international quality standard that recognises and rewards well managed green spaces. Studies have shown that girls’ use of public spaces declines from the age of eight, limiting their access to the benefits and opportunities that these spaces offer, such as improving physical and mental health. Make Space for Girls in Rowntree Park, York, launched in 2021 with a focus on trying to

reverse the drop off of park use as girls get older.

York City Council won the ‘Best initiative to engage and increase use of parks by women and girls’ after it carried out research with girls, fundraising for equipment in the park that older girls want, and ran a month-long programme of 30 free events, including sports, dance, exercise classes, photography and filmmaking, aimed at encouraging 10 to 18 year olds into the park, with more than 250 girls involved. The other winners are: • Team of the Year (volunteers) (joint winners): The Friends of Apley Wood (Telford and Wrekin Council) - England and Mill Waters Volunteers (Ashfield District Council) - England

GroundsFest 2024 – save the date

Building on the feedback received from the first edition, the organising team is working behind the scenes to implement improvements that will elevate the event to new heights. One of the significant changes is the introduction of a more freeflowing layout, enhancing the overall event experience. The addition of a new entrance is set to reduce the walk to the event, ensuring attendees can immerse themselves in the festivities more quickly. The camping zone is set to see new facilities and the festival area is also in for a makeover, with plans underway to introduce brand new attractions. This strategic move aims to

The announcement comes after Green Flag Award and Keep Britain Tidy worked as part of the Safer Parks Consortium, which comprises of Leeds University, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Make Space for Girls, to produce indepth guidance about how to make parks and public spaces safer and more accessible for women.

Campaign group calls for Pitch perfect at Morecambe more to be done about noise Football Club with OAS pollution EFL League Two Club, Morecambe is celebrating the condition of their pitches after adopting the Grow-In Programme from Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS). Head of Grounds Rob Davidson comments, “I am over the moon with this year’s pitches. I am incredibly proud of the results.” Rob joined the club in 2021 following the renovation period and during the first year he struggled to keep coverage on the shaded area of the pitch. During a visit to Origin Turf, Science and Technology Centre, Rob had the opportunity to review the research data comparing tetraploid and diploid grass seed mixes. For his first renovation Rob selected R140 grass seed mix from the R range because of the tetraploid content. He remarks, “Since using R140 at the stadium we have seen improvements in coverage, density, colour and over all turf health, especially in the shaded areas of the pitch. The germination and establishment could not have been better this year.” “Visiting the OAS Turf, Science and Technology Centre has given me additional confidence in the products and the technical support offered by the Origin team has been excellent. With support from Origin, we have tailored the OAS Grow-In plan to suit the pitch requirements. Having a structured Grow-In

Industry professionals could be putting themselves and their customers at risk due to excessive noise pollution created by their equipment, new research has found. The research conducted by EGO Power Plus as part of its Challenge 2025 initiative has found that noise pollution generated by petrol-powered outdoor equipment, notably those used in gardens, heavily exceed the daily exposure limit of 87dB(A) set by the UK Government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The independent tests led by EGO and Earlsmere, a leading vibration and noise testing company, compared noise levels emitted by both petrol and battery-powered rotary mowers; hedge trimmers; grass trimmers; leaf blowers and chainsaws, and found that the petrol tools were up to three times louder than their electric counterparts. In fact, of all the tools tested, four petrolpowered tools exceeded the daily noise exposure limit of 87dB(A), with two generating noise levels of more than 100dB(A). Meanwhile, two battery-powered

tools operated below or within the recognised limits. Decibels are measured logarithmically. This means that decibel intensity increases by units of 10, so each increase is 10 times the lower figure. Therefore, 20 dB is ten times the intensity of 10 dB, and 30 dB is 100 times as intense as 10 dB. As a rough guide, an increase of 3dB doubles the loudness. Emma Gayler, Ambassador for Challenge 2025 said: “Our latest research is clear evidence of the potential damage petrol-powered outdoor tools could be having on people’s health and wellbeing. “Many gardening professionals are still working with petrol-powered tools for hours upon hours every day, and without the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) to help reduce the impact of the noise levels these tools generate or switching to a quieter battery alternative, many could be doing more damage than they realise – not only to themselves but their colleagues and customers too.” Other reports have found that in some cases, noise pollution

programme has allowed us to get the best out of the products with a limited budget.”

It’s not just about the products through. Rob adds, “Working with OAS has allowed me to enhance my education and understanding of the products I use and how to get the best from everything I apply. Their events also provide networking opportunities and a chance to meet with peers and form relationships, which I believe is an important part of our industry.” Rob has used the OAS Grow-In Programme for his second year at the club. The Grow-In programme is borne from extensive R&D at the OAS Turf, Science and Technology Centre. It is a two-step approach which comprises a mix of products to be applied at renovation and at emergence. The mix for application at renovation stage includes an organic soil amendment - a composted cow manure and Humic Acid soil conditioner, Tricure AD™ Granular – a residual wetting agent, and Mycorrhizal Inoculant – a microbial inoculant. At emergence, the programme uses an organo-mineral fertiliser and biostimulants that feature nitrate nitrogen and molasses providing early carbohydrates and instantly available nitrogen to promote growth and enhanced plant health.

Rob reports, “The addition of the liquid mix applied at emergence alongside the C-Complex 14.2.5 has given us a quick grow response. Cutting schedules have commenced earlier and cutting frequency has meant third leaf stage has been reached quickly to allow for Primo Maxx applications. The biostimulant applications and organo-mineral fertilisers, supported by Vertidrain aeration has promoted a healthy root system.” Andy Merry, Key Account Manager from OAS said ‘it has been great working with Rob over the last few years. His professionalism and communication with the club has established a trusting relationship, enabling the renovation work required to produce a surface that performs. Rob is enthusiastic and committed to providing pitches of the highest quality using modern techniques and technology. He has improved the standards across all pitches and produced surfaces that play well and look impeccable. It has been a joy to see the results.” Origin Amenity Solutions Enquiry 9

can be linked to cardiovascular troubles, cognitive impairment and can even cause mental health problems such as stress, anxiety and depression. Recent findings published by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee found that noise pollution increases the risk of stroke and heart disease while the equivalent of 130,000 healthy life years are lost from noise pollution each year in Britain. Furthermore, its report shows that more research is needed to update its understanding of exposure to noise pollution and states that the government accepts the need to regulate noise pollution but there are no specific targets to do so. Emma continued: “Far more awareness needs to be made across the industry to help protect gardening professionals from the dangers of being exposed to high levels of noise pollution. A viable alternative exists with battery powered tools providing the same level of performance and up to 3 times quieter.” EGO Power Plus Enquiry 8

Yamaha’s UMX AC light utility vehicles have proved a hit with Adam Smith, the Head of Grounds and Gardens at Bishop’s Stortford College in Hertfordshire. He and his team now have three of these electricpowered workhorses for estate management duties, while the Catering team have two, which are used for delivering food and beverages to the various houses and to outlying areas of the campus.

“We demoed most of the competitor machines and Yamaha came out on top. They were far and away the best, with a good towing capacity, excellent storage in the side boxes and bonnet, sturdily built and with a very comfortable ride. The carrying capacity is just over 360kg and the aluminium cargo bed is a generous size.

“Summing up, they are quiet, which is ideal in a school environment, comfortable, easily maintained, good on artificial surfaces, sturdily constructed, have a very good carrying capacity and the LED headlights are excellent, especially in the winter months. They tick all the boxes!” Yamaha

The Maintenance team has also taken delivery of their own unit with an enclosed carry box for transporting tools, cables and other necessary equipment. “Prior to getting the UMX’s we were using golf buggies adapted with a cargo box and tow bar,” he said, “but they weren’t really fit for purpose; their traction under load was poor and they had limited carrying capacity.

Green-tech’s latest rural product addition – the Rainbow Terra Earlier this year Green-tech received the first delivery of the new Rainbow Professional Terra tree shelter. The new tree shelter is manufactured from UK-sourced wood that biodegrades naturally in soil. Green-tech is the largest supplier of Rainbow tree protection products in the UK and was the first to place an order while the product was still in development. It is now winner of a sustainable product award.

Green-tech’s marketing director Kate Humes comments, “We have worked with Rainbow Professional for many years and have collaborated closely with them whilst they developed the new Terra tree shelter. It’s the only independently certified soil biodegradable tree shelter that is 100% plant-based and non-toxic that biodegrades into healthy nutrients. It’s a tremendous product and a lot of years of R&D has gone into producing it so I am thrilled for Alex, Pierre, and the Rainbow team.”

Judges’ comments include, “Great product and far better than the conventional solution.” “Good product which is underpinned by external certification regarding soil biodegradation.” “A much-needed product, I look forward to seeing how it develops.”

Kate concludes, “As more and more of our customers seek plasticfree tree protection alternatives I am delighted that we have added the award-winning Rainbow Terra to our rural tree planting portfolio.

Green-tech is all about offering customers choice and this has proved a very popular product.” GreenTech Enquiry 14

Rainbow Professional’s Alex Talpe adds, “We are keen to work collaboratively with the industry, as we transition to using biodegradable tree shelters. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more.”

TreeParker system installation hailed a success Part of the Harrogate conservation area, Craven Lodge on Victoria Avenue is an imposing doublefronted dwelling and was the first Victorian villa to be built on the site. To increase the green credentials, and to add a further degree of privacy to the frontage, a 22metre trench was planned to provide adequate shared rooting volume for four, 3-metre-high Hornbeam ‘Frans Fontaine’ trees. Callum Bain-Mackay, lead designer from Grant Horticulture

approached Green-tech for the best way to get the optimal rooting volume for the tree pits, within the tight space constraints of the property. The new TreeParker Urban Tree Pit System was suggested as this would involve less digging out laterally of the existing ground. The TreeParker system comprises rigid, modular units made from reinforced, recycled polypropylene. These units do a vital job in enabling the ground above a tree pit to be trafficked,

supporting the paving above (up to 56t/m2), whilst at the same time protecting the soil below from compaction. This means that rather than having to use a fast-draining and low organic structural tree soil, we can use our specially blended, Green-tree Geocell topsoil, which is friable and organic - ideal for successful tree establishment. The TreeParker units, although highly rigid, still provide 95% of their volume for rooting space.

The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in various heights from the factory; 400, 600, 800mm, and 1, 1.2, 1.5m. This gives a previously unheard-of flexibility with depth options. It also enables the units, to easily straddle, or work around service pipes and lines. Green-tech supplied 40 tonnes of Geocell topsoil and Greentree subsoil along with Mona Relief irrigation pipes and tree anchors systems. GreenTech

GroundsFest a big hit with play companies 11 September. Katherine Perkins, Managing Director for Wicksteed, revealed why GroundsFest is the ideal event: “There are not many exhibitions where we can actually install our equipment in the ground, so it is the best place for us to showcase the products.”

The first ever GroundsFest, held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on 20 and 21 September, proved to be a huge success for the play sector. A much-anticipated event for the industry, GroundsFest united every corner of the play sector and brought together 6,511 unique visitors (excluding exhibitors) across the two days.

Companies such as Kompan, Wicksteed Leisure, Play and Leisure, The Play Inspection Company, Redlynch Leisure, Huck Nets UK, Star Rubber Environmental and eibe Play all had a stand in the outdoor play area at GroundsFest. Several play companies have already booked for the event next year, which takes place on 10 and

The Association of Play Industries’ new Chair, Dr Amanda Gummer, took to the stage to present: Playgrounds At The Heart Of Communities, a video of which can be seen here. To watch the show highlights please visit the Grounds Fest Youtube Channel at https://www. youtube.com/@groundsfest. On the first evening, exhibitors and visitors enjoyed the festival aspect of the event. With a range of food stalls and live entertainment headlined by a popular Queen tribute band, it was the perfect way to conclude the first day at GroundsFest.

Organisers said GroundsFest united every corner of the industry and brought together 6,511 unique visitors (excluding exhibitors) across the two days. Event Director Christopher Bassett, said: “From the very start we wanted GroundsFest to be an event for everyone and to be able to establish a real sense of community. Over the two days we’ve had sunshine, we’ve had rain showers, but more importantly we’ve had collaboration, built relationships, witnessed innovation at its finest and ultimately come together to celebrate the industry and have a great time with one another. “The positive feedback has been overwhelming but we’re certainly not resting on our laurels. “We’re already planning how we can improve the event for 2024 by listening to every single piece of feedback and by analysing

both the exhibitor and visitor surveys. We’ll certainly be back with GroundsFest chapter two in September 2024 and we cannot wait to welcome you all again.” GroundsFest Enquiry 27

Gerflor donates Taraflex AE Proludic playground revamp sports floor to youth centre celebrates unique city A Warrington Youth Centre that hosted a live vocal performance forty years ago from Freddie Mercury, who would later go onto to be the frontman of rock legends Queen, has been given some much-needed help by international flooring and interiors specialist Gerflor. As part of Gerflor’s commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), the company played a positive role by donating an Olympic pedigree Taraflex Sports surface in ‘Silver Gray’ that would benefit the Community and support Grass Roots for many years to come. A Doctor who volunteers and helps to run the Penketh Youth

Centre outside of her busy schedule, takes up the story. Dr Leila Dirir said: “The hall was built sometime in the early 1960’s and was funded as a youth club for decades but sadly fell into disrepair in the mid -1990’s.”

Dr. Leila further commented: “Back in Jan 2020 I was called by David Carter, Sports National Sales Manager from Gerflor, who had heard we were a small community youth centre that was struggling and were desperate for a new sports floor. “It was such an amazing opportunity, that they were offering to donate a brand new Taraflex Olympic pedigree sports floor.”

Commenting on the project, David Carter said, “On this occasion, it became clear that a small hall of around 120m2 has much more importance to the community than many larger halls. The existing flooring surface was in a state of disrepair. It looked troublesome but we produced the right solution by supplying and donating our high performance Taraflex AE system.” David Carter continued: “Its’ something that Gerflor as a company and also myself are really proud to help with. Penketh Youth Centre now have a floor from an Olympic supplier right in the heart of the community.” Gerflor Enquiry 33

In a bold initiative, Brighton & Hove City Council has revealed its second-largest outdoor playground equipment refurbishment project in history to the tune of £3 million, allocating a substantial £308,000for the transformation of the Hollingdean Park play area. This ambitious undertaking, undertaken in partnership with Proludic, not only revitalises a cherished community space but also introduces recreational amenities tailored to teenagers and adults. The project’s success is attributed to the active involvement of the public in shaping its trajectory. Brighton & Hove City Council engaged the community in the tender specification process, going above and beyond by consulting with residents on-site to present the design and gather invaluable feedback before initiating the installation. Tim Bird, the Area Manager for the southeast, collaborated closely with Proludic’s skilled design team, incorporating a community-driven perspective to fashion a concept tailored to the unique features of the location and neighbourhood. The result is a design that pays homage to Brighton’s distinctive elements, including its vibrant city centre, stunning coastline, and the majestic South Downs. Nestled on the edge of the South Downs, Hollingdean Recreation Ground now seamlessly integrates the rolling hills, shimmering sea, and dynamic city centre through striking wetpour graphics. The design features inclusive elements such as an embankment slide and wheelchair accessible

roundabout, and the centrepiece is a towering 6.5-meter lighthouse multiplay unit that not only serves as a focal point but also provides panoramic views of the sea. The playground’s layout acknowledges the need for inclusivity, addressing the lack of facilities for younger children and those with special needs. Tactile features and play panels encourage role-playing and intergenerational play, while accessible low-level equipment caters to children of all abilities. The Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) unit reflects strategic thinking to foster inclusivity and minimise antisocial behaviour. Thoughtful panel design on the frame reduces noise pollution, creating an open and inviting atmosphere. Safety is paramount,

with multiple entrances and exits, and coastal-themed flooring adds aesthetic appeal. The refurbished play area is expected to attract visitors from miles around, offering an exhilarating cableway and a bespoke wheelchair-accessible embankment slide. Surrounding the lighthouse unit is “amphitheatre” style seating, providing parents with an observation spot and a gathering space for relaxation and socialising. To mark the grand reopening attended by the Mayor, Proludic organised an enchanting event featuring a performance by a Brighton Circus bubble artist, adding a magical touch to the celebration of the enhanced playground. Rain Bird irrigation innovations on show Rain Bird’s sports turf irrigation solutions are just one of the highlights at BTME 2024, Stand 132. Alongside the new 11000 Series Rotor range and 952 Series rotors, the company will also be introducing new low-cost Pressure Compensating surface Dripline and unveiling API (Application Programming Interface) capability for the IQ4 central irrigation control platform. For those looking for high specification sports turf irrigation packages, the

introduction of the 11000 Rotor Series is highly significant. The range addresses familiar issues such as wind drift, irrigation distribution uniformity and the need to conserve water – and these are achieved without the higher operating pressures required by many other irrigation rotors. To provide complete control and flexible irrigation programming, Rain Bird’s ESP-LXIVM controller features a smart Solenoid module for real time diagnostics with simplified troubleshooting. With wireless

communication via a network cartridge, contractors and grounds staff can also capitalise on the benefits of IQ4 central control platform and manage installations remotely. For irrigation and professionals looking for value for money, low water volume irrigation, the new Pressure Compensating Dripline (PCD) ticks all the boxes. It offers the same fast installation, durability in performance and water saving characteristics of the established XFD OnSurface Dripline range – but is around just two thirds of the

cost. PCD Dripline also stands out from many other lower cost drip irrigation products as it also features integral pressure compensating emitters. It is well suited to the irrigation of ground cover, dense planting as well as other landscaped areas. The API (Application Programming Interface) for IQ4 enables communication with a Building Management System and interface with other third party systems to export detailed irrigation data. Rain Bird

I have been fortunate to have met so many quality greenkeepers in my career, which has spanned over 30 years, and it will be a privilege to serve them in my role as vice president and then president of BIGGA. “I just hope that if there’s one thing I can do in my role as president, it will be to instill some of my passion for greenkeeping into those young people who are just starting out.”

A drone image showing the beautiful but harsh conditions faced by greenkeepers throughout winter has been revealed as the overall winner of the British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) Annual Photographic Competition 2023 sponsored by Syngenta. Thetford first assistant greenkeeper and BIGGA member David Ball’s image was chosen by competition judges as the overall winner, with the selection committee also taking into account the results of a public vote, held across BIGGA’s social media accounts. Twelve images were selected in total for the annual BIGGA

MAKES AERATING EFFORTLESS “

The IQ dual-clutch F24/R24 gear box was chosen as it makes manoeuvring the tractor around the course whilst operating the equipment so easy. Another feature we really like is the Auto PTO function or the Headland Management System, it is brilliant for when we get to the end of the run with the aerator, we can lift the implement up, the PTO automatically cuts out, we can turn around then lower again and PTO restarts by itself. Brilliant for safety and avoiding damage or excess wear and tear on the implements themselves.”

Hedge & Verge Mowers

18

www.landscapeandamenity.com

DECEMBER 2023

Manufacturers are still cutting it Flails for hedge and verge management are a good investment for amenity work, with a growing interest in environmental schemes offering extra opportunities, reports Jane Carley. Whether you are looking for a reach arm machine to tackle hedges and verges or a mounted flail for ditches and embankments, there’s a good range of equipment for amenity use on tractors small and large or excavators. Consider also whether the machine of choice could work in more challenging conditions such as less frequent maintenance of wildlife areas. Latest addition to the McConnel range is the PA 4830, dubbed the world’s first compact Power Arm with Variable Forward Reach (VFR).

The 4.8m reach PA4830 VFR features a new armset created from Strenx and Hardox steel that is more than five per cent lighter while adding 0.5m reach over the company’s PA4330. The benefits of the new armset include improved comfort and visibility, greater precision and faster working speeds when operating in confined environments or around obstacles such as signposts and street furniture. The PA4830’s new VFR technology enables operators to extend the arm 0.9m forward and 0.9m backward, positioning the attachment at any point along the cutting range and dramatically expanding the working area. Featuring 30hp independent hydraulics the PA4830 can be mounted to a wide range of utility vehicles and compact

tractors and can be specified as a left or right-hand cut. The PA4830 has been redesigned to take advantage of the latest technology and new features include 95 litre oil tank (increased from 80 litres); safety breakback to protect the armset on contact with an obstacle; arm suspension; lift and angle float; greaseless bushes for reduced maintenance; improved hose routing for enhanced protection and road lighting kit. It is controlled by the Mini Motion joystick controller which features a progressive mini joystick with two easy-access hat switches providing proportional control of up to five different services. Kuhn offers two offset verge mower ranges. The TBE 102 verge shredders include the 192, 222, 242 models,

McConnel

while the extra offset range of TBES 102 shredders have the 222, 242 and 262 models. All units offer a robust mower for verges and banks with the versatility to mow and control a wide range of vegetation on varied terrains with one machine.

TBE and TBES mowers require tractors from 80hp to 180hp depending on mower size and application and feature large diameter 250mm and 190mm pulleys, with four heavy duty belts for increased power transfer and reduced maintenance.

Kuhn’s TBE 102 models have working widths between 1.79m and 2.3m, while the TBES units offer widths of 2.14m, 2.3m and 2.5m. All models have three variable positions including behind the tractor, offset or tilted, and angles for ditch work can extend to -65° and up to +90° for hedges.

There are five models in the Spring-Longer range, offering users both front and rear mounted options. Cutting widths start at 1.6m for the S 1680 RPL and front mounted S 1680 RPFL. Also available in front and rear mounted versions are the S 2080 RPFL/RPL models with a cutting width of 2m and a horizontal reach of 3.9m. The biggest machine in the range is the rear mounted S 2380 RPL with a 2.3m cutting width and 4.2m horizontal reach.

A 180mm rear roller and Hardox skids are standard to help increase longevity, and all models are offered with three flail choices for the 450mm rotor – heavy hammer knife for grass; Universal knife for scrub cleaning; Scoop flails for intensive grassy areas. The

For increased stability and driver comfort, the Spring-Longer models can be fitted with Kuhn’s Stabi-Link frame, which takes just five minutes to remove the machine from the tractor. A vertical offset feature can raise the mowing unit without adjusting the tractor’s lift height, which allows for greater control when mowing ditches and the ability to mow above road level on banks. A maximum ditch angle of -70° and a bank angle of 90° are possible. Control of the Spring-Longer uses a circuit selector control as standard, which is connected to the tractor’s single acting service and controls the vertical offset and flail head orientation. A further double acting valve handles the horizontal offset, meaning all controls are handled by one joystick for ease of use. An automatic transport lock pin is activated without the need to leave the cab. Weaving Machinery has been the official UK stockist of Agrimaster equipment for over 25 years. The RV flail mower is a front and rear mounted, heavy duty flail mower that is able to take on all tough jobs, from cutting grass and margins to medium sized brash with ease. The RV is equipped with hydraulic side shift and heavy-duty skids as

which ensures the rotor is running at the right speed and protects the head hydraulic motor from any imbalances in the system. The HDX Excavator Cutting Head features a high torque piston motor for increased power said to be especially effective for modern excavators with higher operating pressures. Building on Blaney’s Power Shredder technology, the HDX head uses a high-speed dynamic rotor which works in combination with integrated shark fin blades, resulting in material that is chopped to a finer grade.

Maschio flail mowers are now distributed by the Italian company’s newly established subsidiary, Maschio Gaspardo UK, with full parts and service support from its premises in Lincolnshire. Whilst a mechanical and/or hydraulic offset is available on most standard mounted machines the range also includes fully offset models ideally suited to maintaining verges. The incline offset of the Giraffa range allows the flail mower to rotate 65 degrees downwards and 90 degrees upwards giving the ability to work on vertical or

steep sloping banks or even hedge sides. With models suitable for tractors of 20–200hp, the most popular amenity models are the medium duty front/rear Brava and Bella, along with the heavy duty, left or right offset Giraffa XL. All the models ensure all the worked material is thoroughly cut and mulched at a fast rate enabling a large amount of ground to be covered in a working day. A new range of reach arm flails is expected in 2024.

standard and working widths are 2.55 and 2.8m. The FN is a rear mounted, multipurpose, right hand operated flail that can be used ‘in line’ behind the tractor or offset. It is ideal for cutting ditches and banks safely and easily with working positions of up to 90° and down to 50°. The hood is manufactured from FE510 high tensile and high impact steel making it suitable for the most challenging of conditions. It can be used in a vertical position which makes it the ideal tool for siding oversized hedges and working widths are 2.0-2.8m. The Fox flail mower is similar to the FN but features a slightly smaller rotor and roller and is available in smaller sizes from 1.6 to 2.52m. The company also offers Giraffe, Compact and R520 reach arm

ranges. The Giraffe can be used on compact tractors without a pto since it uses a hydraulic motor to power the reciprocating blade. The Compact features dual direction cut, parallel arm, fully independent hydraulics and head float, with reach from 3.2-5.4m. Offering a heavy duty construction, the R520 has simple cable controls. Blaney Agri, a Co Antrim based machinery manufacturer, offers a range of hedge cutters from the Compact trimmer to a telescopic Contractor machine with 6.5m reach. Blaney can also tailor machines for a custom build. The Blaney Compact hedge cutter is equipped with a cutterbar trimmer, featuring a low friction, self-lubricating design which is easy to drive and reduces wear and associated maintenance costs. This also gives enhanced performance

even on older tractors with less oil flow. Blaney Agri has developed Power Shredder head technology which delivers more power to the head for increased rotor speed, a better cut and finish with improved efficiency saving time and fuel. Blaney Agri’s design promotes natural cooling in the system, with the use of special fittings to reduce pressure points and flow restrictions. This also reduces tractor power input requirements with greater rotor output due to lower energy losses within the system. Blaney has also developed an excavator cutting head designed for optimum manoeuvrability to allow for cutting in closer proximity to the hedge, which can be manufactured to suit any make/model of digger. Blaney’s excavator heads are equipped with a hydraulic ‘Powerbox’

As the seasons and weather changes Amazone have it covered. Wet or dry grass, long or short, collect or mulch, the PH 1250 and PH 1500 models take it all in their stride. The sharpened wing blades on the horizontal SmartCut rotor cleanly cut and shred the grass before conveying it via the cross auger on to that unique second vertical auger to be packed into the collection hopper - meaning less time emptying and more time mowing. The more than adequate power is provided by engines that are already Stage V Exhaust emission compliant and require no AdBlue.

The 4-stroke OHV engine with cyclone filter is equipped with a particularly strong crankshaft and has a displacement of 627cm3 at a speed of 3,600rpm. The AS 1000 Ovis RC enables a mowing speed of up to 5km/h and thus an area output of up to 5,000m2/h, with an excellent cutting pattern and even grass placement across the entire working width. The 100cm wide flail mower, in combination with the somewhat narrower tracked undercarriage, makes it easy to mow close to the edge and comfortably to within a few centimetres of crash barriers and other obstacles. Thanks to the flexibly adjustable mowing deck, the new flail mower with tracked undercarriage can be optimally adapted to all terrain

conditions. Guided by a wide caster roller, the mower deck adapts perfectly to any contour. The adjustable sliding frame means that the specified minimum cutting height can be maintained throughout. Maximum traction on difficult terrain is ensured by the carried insert without ground contact. The mower’s surfing suspension, with its large pendulum travel, also adapts well to uneven ground in difficult, hilly terrain. The AS 1000 Ovis RC with its compact design (183cm long, 114cm wide and 69cm high) mows difficult terrain and hard-to-reach areas without any problems thanks to remote control from a safe distance. Maintaining verges beside highways can result in lane closures and other safety measures, so time is of the essence.

6 psi, it’s gentle on the newly established slopes and can be used at 30 degrees, something no other ride-on machine can achieve.

The Ventrac 4520 with its choice of mowing decks is a highly productive combination allowing large areas to be mown, quickly and efficiently. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by hinged and removable covers and tilt-up decks provide easy access.

The Boom Mower is the perfect tool for cutting back hedges, shrubs, saplings, reeds around pond edges and vegetation on riverbanks. With a reach in excess of 2.74 metres (108”), it features a double action 91.4 cm (36”) sickle bar with an autolevelling system, which keeps the head at the desired angle of cut for consistent operation. Its out-front mounting system provides excellent visibility and comfort for the operator.

The Ventrac’s 1.7 metre cutting width and maximum speed of around 16 km an hour, certainly does the job. It tackles the embankments with ease and leaves a very acceptable finish. With a ground pressure of just

All-electric super quiet, remote mowing option from Agria Agria UK, represented by Wiedenmann UK dealers, have started to demo an all-electric mowing option. The agria 9700e, an all-electric tool carrier, is the perfect option for a Muthing Flail. Operating as a base unit with as much power as a 30 hp tractor, the 9700e lets you attach mowing decks, flail decks or other accessories using a CAT 1 standard 3-point linkage. Andy Kerr, lead demonstrator for both Agria UK and Wiedenmann UK, said: “PTO driven implements which weigh less than 300 kg potentially can be powered by the 9700e. In October, we did our first handful of run outs in three Scottish cities with a Muthing Flail on the agria and it was remarkable. Literally,

we were on steep banks, and it was doing a fine job. “I use a handheld control pad so can stand up to 100 m away, While the demos were all on hillsides, it works equally well on the flat. Some of the Council teams who came to watch said it would make a huge difference to awkward areas they need to manage… grassy inclines, verge cutting on busy roads, and work around quiet areas like hospitals and schools. Both its H&S credentials and the fact that it carries almost a full working day’s charge were important considerations.” The agria 9700 e is available from Agria UK operating through a network of stocking dealers across the UK and Ireland, supported by the Wiedenmann UK. Helping winter maintenance programmes

Get out and mow in the wet with Ventrac

Ideal for winter maintenance programmes Turfco’s range of broadcast topdressers, drop spreaders, blowers, overseeders and edgers, can help the busy turf manager.

It can be so frustrating knowing that the grass needs a cut or there’s maintenance jobs to be done, but the weathers against you.

“Our WideSpin topdressers reduce the number of passes and compaction to complete the job, while ensuring an even distribution of material, even in wet conditions,” says John Moore, Turfco’s European Sales Manager. “Available in truck-mounted and tow-behind models with engine or hydraulic power options, they come with standard electronic control or a patented digital

Smart Controller. Standard electronic control models are easy to use and offer good value for the money. Smart Controller models offer rate calculation and programmable pre-sets for greater productivity and labour savings. “Our Torrent 2 powerful allpurpose blower has been designed with significant input from turf managers. Available in tow-behind or tractormounted pto-driven formats, it delivers unprecedented control over air speed, air direction, noise management and fuel consumption. This is a precision clean-up tool that can used year-round.

“Built on a heavy-duty frame with a rugged draw bar its one-piece nozzle is made of impact resistant molded polyethylene. The enclosed deck dramatically reduces debris pickup from below the blower, decreasing wear on the turbine and minimising overall dust and debris around the operator. Turfco Enquiry 62

However, owners of Ventrac compact tractors don’t have this issue as this highly versatile machine and numerous attachments can get out and work in the most inclement weather. Worm casts are the bane of a turf managers life during the autumn and winter months, but the Ventrac can get out and get the job done. Peter Pattenden, Golf Courses and Estate Manager at Carden Park

in Cheshire says: “Worm casts on fairways can are a significant problem; we don’t want to use our fairway mowers, but we can set our three-pod rotary Contour deck at 19mm and keep everything looking good. “Our Ventracs have many outstanding qualities: versatility, manoeuvrability, build quality, reliability, ease of operation, but one not readily appreciated until you have it, is the ability to operate in wet conditions. “We can be wet up here in Cheshire and it’s got us out of jail on many occasions. We get flash flooding on parts of the courses

after heavy rain, but we can still get out and work. “I have even used both machines, side by side, with their Contour decks to mow the rough after heavy downpours.” Price Turfcare Enquiry 63

Koro RECYCLINGDRESSER can be sustainable topdressing method Now more than ever, golf clubs are battling the rising cost of materials, with sand being one of the highest, but by using the Koro RECYCLINGDRESSER from Campey Turf Care Systems, clubs can reapproach topdressing. Whilst the Imants-made machine has traditionally been used on football pitches and larger areas, The Worcestershire Golf Club Course Manager, Steve Lloyd, thinks the process of the RECYCLINGDRESSER could save up to £2.5k across an 18hole course. The RECYCLINGDRESSER aerates the underlying soil

vertically and horizontally, removing soil from the root zone and re-distributing it across the playing surface. Layering and compaction are eliminated, biological activity is increased, and existing fertilisers in the soil are better utilised. The RECYCLINGDRESSER reduces the amount of new topdressing required, therefore saving labour and material costs and promoting sustainable maintenance. The waste of material during hollow tining got Steve thinking about the machine, and after seeing it work on his USGA

specification practice green, he sees a place for it in golf. For Steve, the pressures on sand use will only continue to grow. The cost of raw materials and haulage are already becoming issues, and the demand from other industries, such as construction, means golf is down the pecking order.
