HTA issues Environmental Horticulture Manifesto ahead of general election The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has officially released its Environmental Horticulture Manifesto, outlining ten key priorities for a future UK Government. The manifesto underscores the significance of green spaces, plant health, and sustainable practices, aiming to position the UK as a global leader in environmental horticulture. The manifesto draws on recent YouGov poll data conducted on behalf of the HTA in December 2023, involving Members of Parliament. The results reveal that a majority of MPs, 53%, support the creation of a crossgovernment Office for Green Spaces, the HTA’s lead policy ask. Notably, this proposal garnered support from MPs across various parties. Key insights from the survey also indicate that MPs acknowledge
the substantial benefits of the environmental horticultural industry in areas such as Jobs and Skills (82%), the Nation’s Health and Wellbeing (80%), the Economy (72%), and the Environment and Biodiversity (76%). With political parties currently writing their own manifestos ahead of the General Election later this year, the HTA believe that utilising the value of plants is a key policy solution in areas such as the environment, health, skills, jobs and the economy. HTA Chief Executive Fran Barnes said: “This manifesto marks a pivotal moment for the future of environmental horticulture. With the right support and policies in place, the UK horticultural sector has the potential to emerge as a global leader in sustainable practices and deliver green growth, ensuring that future generations
can benefit from the original green industry. “We strongly urge policymakers and prospective parliamentarians to seize these opportunities and recognise the value of our sector. If we look at one area of our industry, domestic gardens, we know that these comprise 29.5% of the UK’s urban space. In England alone, this garden area surpasses our National Nature Reserves by more than four and a half times. This substantial resource is significant for the environment and wildlife, providing a habitat for thousands of generalist species that thrive in these spaces. We also have 30 million regular gardening enthusiasts, and almost two-thirds (62%) of UK adults have a garden/ outdoor space, which they report using to cultivate plants, trees, or flowers. This means gardeners in every UK parliamentary constituency who hugely value the UK’s green spaces.
Product News Latest industry launches and case studies Page 6
“Supporting this growing nation of gardeners not only fuels local and national growth across the UK, but it is also a solution to adapting to our changing climate - aligning with 7 of the 10 Environmental Improvement Plan goals.
Furthermore, environmental horticulture contributes to the well-established mental and physical benefits derived from spending time in nature-based spaces.” HTA

Government’s £93m funding for 1,100 grassroots projects More than 1,100 grassroots sport projects will benefit from £93 million of funding as part of the continued drive to get more people active, the Government has announced. Research shows exercising more was the UK’s most common New Year’s resolution for 2024, and the Government is helping hundreds of thousands more people across the UK keep their resolution and get active by delivering high-quality grassroots sport facilities. From Belfast to Bracknell, over 1,100 projects are receiving funding that will go towards facilities such as changing rooms,
pavilions, state of the art 3G artificial grass pitches, goalposts and floodlights, improving access to sport and physical activity for local communities. Sports Minister Stuart Andrew said: “Sport and physical activity are vital to our mental health and wellbeing, and each year thousands of people make a New Year’s resolution to exercise more. “We know one of the major barriers to getting active is having access to high-quality sports facilities, which is why we are investing in 1,100 more projects, backed by £93 million. “This government has delivered thousands of new projects across
the UK with the aim of getting over 120,000 more people to get active, helping us to make big strides towards meeting our ambitious target of 3.5 million more people active by 2030.”

Royal Mid-Surrey take ten with Kubota A fleet of five RTV’s and five tractors from Kubota are supporting operations across the busy 36-hole complex at Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club. Some of the vehicles have delivered close to 20 years of reliable service and it’s this dependability that’s keeps Golf Course Manager, Gavin Kinsella, loyal to the brand for some of their most vital and well-used pieces of equipment. One of the club’s original RTV-900’s, purchased in 2005, remains on the fleet joined by two RTV-X900’s and two RTV-X1110’s in more recent years.
Alongside RTV’s, and proving to be the workhorses for the majority of autumn, winter and spring maintenance and renovations are an L2602, L3830 and L5040 from Kubota’s popular L tractor series, a B2710 and a larger, M6060 with loader.

Both the HTA 150 and HTA 160 offer a high power output of 1.4 kW, the same as the petrol HT 135 pole pruner and 0.3kW higher than the HTA 135. Driven by a powerful and low maintenance EC motor, both the HTA 150 and HTA 160 offer elite performance with both models capable of cutting through large branches for efficiency in
professional arboriculture and forestry applications. While the HTA 160 boasts a rigid telescopic shaft with a maximum length of 405 cm, the same reach as professional petrol models, the HTA 150 offers a shorter, fixed length shaft best suited to thinning work in young stands. Battery pole pruners offer numerous advantages compared to petrol models, such as a low noise and emission free work environment, low running costs and easier maintenance.
to promote efficient ejection of the wood shavings for faster working too. Like many tools in the AP System, the HTA 150 and HTA 160 feature a metal mesh air filter, helping to cool the battery and motor during operation and further enhancing the lifetime of the product. Compatible with the Smart Connector 2 A, both
models allow users to gather insights from the tool, such as working time and working speed history. Not only this, but this intuitive feature also alerts the user when maintenance tasks are due on each individual tool to maximise productivity. STIHL
Thanks to the lightweight magnesium gearbox, both models are easy to manoeuvre into the desired position for precise cutting. The design of the sprocket cover is also optimised
STRENGTH MEETS POWER The ultimate compact loader, redefining power and precision. Boasting unprecedented lift height and capacity, it effortlessly manages tasks from reaching high feeder wagons to efficient truck loading without maneuvering around. Handle heavy loads like stone pallets with a 1.9-ton capacity, all while maintaining a compact footprint for access to tight spaces and easy transport on a car trailer.
With the smaller implements catered for by the lower hp compact tractors, the larger L2602 and M6060 will be taking the strain for largerscale groundworks and heavier machinery, such as the clubs high-capacity vacuum collector. Kubota Enquiry 7

Robots move into contracting Robotic mowers are becoming more commonplace in the professional environment, but may still have some limitations. Jane Carley looks at one of the latest innovations to come to market. Contractors in particular need a mowing solution they can take from job to job, while more remote or extreme locations offer obstacles for perimeter wires and GPS guidance. These are the challenges that have been tackled by tech pioneer FJ Dynamics, already established as a manufacturer
of precision equipment for agriculture, construction and geospatial applications. The FJD Vidar Z42P zero turn mower, manufactured from the ground up in Singapore, is designed to be used in three ways: as a traditional lap bar ride on, via remote control or in autonomous mode. It made its debut at Groundsfest and SALTEX, and FJD’s UK Sales Manager Richard Larke explains: “Contractors told me that they could see it being especially useful where labour is hard to come by – jobs that
previously needed three men could now be tackled by two – one focusing on hedge trimming for example, while the second supervises the mower but is also able to carry out other gardening tasks at the same time.” The Vidar uses RTK positioning to record an initial pass as it is driven around the boundary of the area to be mown, before software algorithms calculate the most efficient mowing path within this area. Once set into autonomous mowing mode via its terminal, it follows this path autonomously. “Navigation is via RTK, backed up by LIDAR vision technology,” explains Richard. “RTK signal can be lost in areas with tree coverage for example,
but the mower is able to continue on the path, guided by LIDAR. The vision-based sensors also provide obstacle detection, along with ultrasonic sensors low down on the frame: if an obstacle is detected the mower stops until it moves out of its path.” Where mowing tasks are repeated throughout the season, the recorded path plan can be easily recalled and re-used. Routes to the mowing area can also be created, with the mower travelling autonomously between jobs at up to 13kph. Deck lift and lower and cut height adjustment is electrically actuated, so once the area to be mown is reached, the deck is put into work autonomously. “Because the sensors respond so promptly to obstacles and stop
the mower - or when planning a path, turn away - ride-on mode is useful for tasks such as mowing close to trees or street furniture,” Richard explains. “The Vidar can also be used in remote control mode in areas not suitable for autonomous operation or where hazards such as slopes or undergrowth make using a ride-on mower uncomfortable or dangerous.” Power is supplied by three batteries, developed in-house by FJD and with a run time of up to six hours; Richard suggests that a spare set would allow a contractor to simply swap them over for a full day’s mowing. Charging is via an on-board port and takes 6-7 hours. Cut width is 42in (105cm) and wider decks are being considered, although in
common with other autonomous machinery, working width and output are less closely related than for operated equipment. The company’s other notable expertise is in battery technology; FJD is also offering the GM22 electric cylinder mower, a pedestrian machine said to be capable of cutting 17 acres on one charge. Small electric tractors are yet another product in the range; expect to see much more of these tech experts in groundcare in the near future. The FJD Vidar Z42P is priced at £24,000 and is distributed in the UK by Autonomous Agri Solutions and Atomic Tractor. FJD Enquiry 9
Club overcome exposed conditions with bespoke mix The exposed location and sandy loam soil profile of Cardigan Golf Club mean the links course is subject to harsh conditions, yet the greens and fairways have never performed better according to Course Manager Stuart Adams – who attributes the improvements in visual merit and plant health down to the bespoke seed programme
Saving Champions League tie from ‘biblical’ downpours Managing cup competitions alongside domestic fixtures is difficult at the best of times. But it’s even harder when games in the Champions League need rescheduling. It’s November 29, 2023. Galatasaray were set to host Manchester United in Istanbul for the second leg of their Group A clash. Rams Park, Galatasaray’s home ground, sees a range of conditions throughout the year. From 10am, thunderstorms would occur throughout the day, bringing near-constant rain up until midnight. Conscious of a potential postponement, SIS activated its SISAir soil aeration system
at 9.15 am. SISAir has been developed to help sports club owners and groundskeepers make the most of root zone growing conditions, making it easier to maintain stronger, healthier turf. The system is installed just underneath a site’s playing surface. Once in-situ, SISAir can be used for subsurface aeration, water removal and gas exchange. This is done by setting the network of pipes to vacuum mode or pressure mode. According to SIS notes, at 10.18 am the system’s drainage well recorded a level of 50cm, triggering the first pump into action. The rain was heavier than expected throughout the late morning, causing the second pump to start.
A few hours later, just before 1 pm, the pumps were stopped as the well water level fell below the 50cm mark for the first time. The system was proving highly effective, though it would only be a temporary reprieve with more bad weather to come. Innovative systems, like SISAir, are just one part of SIS’s offering. The company also creates natural, hybrid and artificial surfaces, including running tracks, as well as ongoing maintenance of all pitches regardless of whether they were originally built by SIS. Study shows silicon improves turf A study carried out by STRI in association with biostimulant specialist Orion FT has shown how increasing silicon in turf grass can improve leaf density, increase root mass and enhance the overall green colour in visual assessments. The study used replicated plots and four applications of the silicon biostimulant Fossil on days 0, 7, 14 and 21. The plots were assessed for ground cover and disease, colour, and quality every week, with clippings and root mass assessments taken at week eight.
silicon was improving plant health, and this is especially important with the drought conditions we have experienced in recent years,” explains Orion FT Research and Development Agronomist Kate Williams. A one-litre and two-litre dose of Fossil was applied to turf grass as a foliar spray. The two-litre application showed a significant increase over the untreated and one-litre treated trials plots.
With record temperatures being recorded year on year, and longer spells of dry weather, a deeper searching root system has the potential to improve turf drought resilience. A further benefit that befits the UK as an island was the reduction in sodium uptake of the treated plots. STRI Enquiry 14

Green-tech help to reduce the risk of flooding in city that delivers key pieces of infrastructure across the UK, from railways to wind farms. They use digital engineering and a net zero carbon approach, placing sustainability at their core.
Leeds City Council is working with the Environment Agency on their Flood Alleviation Scheme Phase 2 (FAS2) to reduce the risk of flooding of a 14km stretch between Leeds Train Station and Apperley Bridge. The project is designed to protect 1,048 homes and 474 businesses through a combination of traditional engineering methods and natural flood management. Due for completion in Spring 2024, it is expected that the flood risk will be reduced to a 0.5% probability of occurring in any given year (a 1-in-200-year level of flood protection). Haddonstone bollards St Albans Cathedral benefits illuminate any outside space from UltraScape The new Ball Bollard and Classic Bollard lighting products from cast stone specialist, Haddonstone, have been developed to edge residential lawns, paths and driveways. Versatile and robust, they can also serve as both guidance and protection solutions for hotels, schools, hospitals and other public buildings. Both designs are manufactured in Haddonstone’s TecLite material -
a durable reinforced, reconstituted stone that closely resembles natural stone in appearance. The Ball Bollard is based on the manufacturer’s traditional cast stone balls and can be specified with either a hard-wired 240volt or 12-volt power supply. The light fitting itself is fully waterproof and manufactured in a choice of Marine Grade 316 stainless steel or in solid brass, while the low-energy LED lamp is offered in a warm white.
With a diameter of 330mm or 13”, the Ball Bollard weighs 36kg, making it sturdy enough to withstand strong winds and pedestrian contact.
UltraScape have partnered with landscaping specialists Ground Control, to restore a cobbled driveway at the magnificent St Albans Cathedral.
Meanwhile, the versatile Classic Bollard is manufactured in Haddonstone’s TecLite material. Solar powered, it features an aluminium and polycarbonate light fitting and is available in silver or black, with warm white ES/E27 LED lamps, and with panels made from high quality monocrystalline. The Classic Bollard, including the light fitting, is 960mm tall and 210mm wide and weighs a sturdy 22kg.
Following thorough and detailed conversations between the client, Ground Control and UltraScape, it soon became clear that using BS 7533 compliant paving installation materials was the only way forward.
Designed to function reliably in wet climates and on the longest nights, the efficient long-life lithium-ion batteries charge and manage their energy via a built-in dimming sequence from dusk, ranging from 100% down to 30%, effectively helping to reduce energy usage.
Comprising of eco-bed bedding mortar, pro-prime slurry primer and flowpoint flowable grout, Ground Control utilised UltraScape’s BS 7533 compliant mortar paving system to relay the
cobbles to create an exquisite, seamless finish. To begin, UltraScape eco-bed was applied to the area to produce the ultimate foundation for the paving. UltraScape eco-bed can be laid from 10mm – 100mm, is shrinkage compensated and can be opened to foot traffic after just 12 hours, allowing contractors to move on to the next part of the installation quickly. In addition to its superb performance qualities, eco-bed also contains 20% recycled material. With eco-bed in place, Ground Control coated the mortar and paving with pro-prime slurry primer
to create an exceptional bond. Using a primer eliminates costly failures caused by general wear and tear and gives you confidence and peace of mind that the paving slabs will not come loose. To complete the installation, market-leading flowpoint flowable grout, in Charcoal, was used to joint the cobbles. With an initial set of just 15 minutes, and a walk on time of one hour, it is unsurprising that flowpoint has become synonymous with fast application, cost-effective and robust jointing. DuraPost provides longterm alternative to timber Recently at a property in Leeds, a failing timber fencing system has been replaced with a range of high performance DuraPost products.
This was the case at the property where the ageing timber fencing was losing its appeal and beginning to fail – so a replacement was needed.
Incorporating fence posts, Urban Slatted Composite fence panels and an Aluminium Gate, the holistic solution from Birkdale Sales provided all the necessary aesthetic and performance requirements.
Birkdale’s Urban Slatted Composite fence panels are manufactured from a combination of materials, including rice husks – a natural bi-product from the rice industry – which accounts for 55% of the panel. Recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is also incorporated into the design. These robust panels are incredibly strong and wind tested to high speeds.
While timber fencing can look attractive initially, it inevitably begins to rot, weaken and deteriorate over time.
Steve Ward from Silver Fern Fencing installed the new system. “Thanks to the low weight and slimness of the posts, we could carry and install them easily and quickly. They are so much better to work with than concrete systems, which are far harder to carry and install. The panel boards were then installed horizontally. I always recommend DuraPost to my customers and will continue to do so.” Birkdale DuraPost Enquiry 26

Nematodes are naturally occurring microscopic worms that act as biological pest controllers. These tiny worms attack, invade, and kill targeted species, offering advanced biological control of a wide range of pests including codling moth, vine weevil, leatherjackets, slugs and many more.
Over the past year alone, approximately 350,000 tree shelters were collected and recycled via these hubs, resulting in over 40 tonnes of recycled material that will be used in the manufacture of brand-new shelters. Tubex

Political parties should prioritise children’s physical activity Ali Oliver, Chief Executive Officer of children’s charity the Youth Sport Trust, is calling on political parties of all colours to unlock the potential of physical activity, including PE, sport and play, to develop happier, healthier and more successful children. In response to Labour’s new Child Health Action Plan, which includes a commitment to ‘get kids moving, by implementing a mandatory national curriculum that is balanced and broad, and makes a wide range of physical activities compulsory for all schools.’ Ali Oliver said: “For years, the Youth Sport Trust has campaigned for an urgent focus
on increasing physical activity and reducing sedentary lifestyles as a form of preventative healthcare for our nation’s children. “Active children are happier, healthier, more resilient, perform better at school and have overall improved wellbeing. As Keir Starmer himself says, ‘Healthy, happy children is not something nice to have, it’s a basic right that has economic urgency’. “The UK’s Chief Medical Officers’ recommend children are vigorously active for at least 60 minutes a day to maintain health, but unfortunately, the most recent data from Sport
England shows that fewer than half (47%) of children in England meet this guidance and 1 in 3 (30%) are active for less than 30 minutes per day. What we’re doing currently is not working – too many children are inactive, and are unhappier, unhealthier and more distracted as a result.” Last month, the Youth Sport Trust met with MPs from across the political spectrum in Parliament to launch its new manifesto for action. A key part of this plan is elevating the role of PE in schools and ensuring every child has guaranteed access to two hours of highquality, inclusive PE each week.
Proludic Redrawing boundaries with inclusive play “The manifesto sets out five recommendations in total, to deliver the transformational change needed to give every child an active start in life,” continued Ali Oliver. “In an election year, we are calling on political leaders to prioritise physical activity to improve children’s health and wellbeing; improve their educational attainment and ultimately increase their happiness.”
The Youth Sport Trust believes improving children and young people’s wellbeing is a national priority. Key to this is putting the child at the centre of our thinking and unlocking the potential of physical activity including PE, sport and play to develop happier, healthier and more successful children. Sector meets with meet with Shadow Minister for Sport Shadow Sport Minister Stephanie Peacock MP has met with the sport and physical activity sector’s representative organisations to discuss how Labour can harness the
impact of sport, recreation and physical activity to create a happier, healthier and more prosperous nation in the event of a change of Government. The sector has the power to
change lives and help address key priorities including relieving NHS pressures, breaking down barriers to opportunity, strengthening local communities and boosting economic growth.
By offering opportunities to be active across communities and schools, the sector already saves the NHS £9.5bn through preventing illness and generates £85bn by boosting wellbeing, empowering communities and generating economic activity. But a third of people living in the UK remain physically inactive and already stark inequalities are widening. A shift in how the nation looks at improving the health and wellbeing of this nation must be at the heart of any future Government’s strategy, and the role sport and physical activity will be integral to this. “We must make it easier for people to play, move and be active in any way they choose by ensuring sport, recreation and

Mowing without boundaries Looking to take the driver away from the mowing operation? There are plenty of developments in specialist mowers. Jane Carley reports.
Mowers are satellite guided and do not require a perimeter wire; the unit follows the shortest possible route to and from the charging station for efficiency.
Unmanned mowing has obvious advantages for turf management, improving safety and efficiency. Whether you are looking at robotic machines for repetitive mowing of fine turf or a remote control solution to improve operator comfort when tackling overgrown or hazardous areas, the market is developing rapidly.
Mission RTKn models are equipped with recharging brake systems and Kress intelligence, which includes multi-zone management and connection to a smartphone monitoring and control app. The latest Mega RTKn models, such as the KR233E and KR236E, not only incorporate the features of Mission RTKn models but also introduce double layered blades for fine clippings in denser turfgrass. The auto-levelling blade system adapts to uneven terrain so is suited to landscaped areas or contoured fairways.
Electric power is the go-to for robots and is also increasingly an option for remote control machines. As environmental factors become part of the specification, it’s a useful tool in the armoury. Charging infrastructure and practices are also advancing, making batteries a more practical choice. Kress continues to progress with automated mowing for commercial grounds. Building on the success of the RTKn series, Kress combines RTKn (Real-time kinematic to the power of network), MAP (Mowing Action Plan), OAS (Obstacle Avoidance System), and other proven technologies. Unlike conventional robotic mowers relying on powered antennas, Kress RTKn remains immune to power surge damages. The absence of on-site antennas enhances the system’s reliability and resilience, ensuring uninterrupted mowing, suggests the company.

With a wider cutting width of 35cm and TeamWork collaborative technology which allows more than one robot to be operated inside the same working area, Mega RTKn mowers can work in many commercial situations. The KR233E is suitable for areas up to 18,000sqm and the KR236E 36,000sqm.

Applications include residential lawns, large properties, athletic fields, school campuses, resorts, and corporate facilities. Mower Magic supplies the Italian-made Ambrogio range. With a working area of up to 6000sqm, the Ambrogio 4.36 is designed for large open spaces. The front and rear axles can move independently due to its

GSM Connect offers full connectivity with the Ambrogio App, including software updates, the ability to control the robot remotely, real time navigation monitoring and control of scheduling. The 4.36 Elite can be paired up with other robots from the Ambrogio range via the +infinitysystem. The 4WD version of the 4.36 can work on inclines up to 65%, thanks to its extra-high and wide back wheels which add even more grip.

Working time is up to four hours. FJ Dynamics has entered the robotic mower sector with two solutions. The FJD RM25 is
aimed at the lawn care and sportsfield market. Using LIDAR collision avoidance technology, the RM25 mower creates a 3D cloud map of the area to be mowed, with the mowing path then followed autonomously. Advanced technology for the 4kwh batteries provides the power to cut up to 13,000sqm per charge, before returning to a docking station, with a charging time of five hours. The RM25 is fitted with a 63cm rotary deck, which can be adjusted from 20-127mm cut heights; it can cut at up to 6kph and climb slopes up to 20deg. Protection while working is offered by the LIDAR system, collision beams, lift protection and rain monitoring. Monitoring and control is via a smartphone app.

With an eye on the contractor market, the FJD Vidar can be operated in ride-on, remote control or fully autonomous mode. It uses RTK positioning to record an initial pass as it is driven around the boundary of the area to be mown, before software algorithms calculate the most efficient mowing path within this area. Once set into autonomous mowing mode via its terminal, it follows this path autonomously. Navigation is via RTK, backed up by LIDAR vision technology – in areas where the RTK signal can be lost, such as under trees, the mower is able to continue on the path, guided by LIDAR. The vision-based sensors also provide obstacle detection, along with ultrasonic sensors low down on the frame. Where mowing tasks are repeated throughout the season, the recorded path plan can be easily recalled and re-used. Routes to the mowing area can also be created, with the mower

travelling autonomously between jobs at up to 13kph. Deck lift and lower and cut height adjustment is electrically actuated, so once the area to be mown is reached, the deck is put into work autonomously; cut width is 105cm. Power is supplied by three batteries, developed in-house by FJD and with a run time of up to six hours; charging is via an on-board port and takes six to seven hours. FJD mowers are supplied in the UK by Autonomous Agri Solutions and Atomictractor. Husqvarna has a wide portfolio of robotic lawn mowers, designed to increase productivity and efficiency for professional applications. The Ceora, which can independently mow an area of up to 50,000sqm features EPOS (Exact Positioning Operating System), whereby
ROBOCUT GPS coordinates to map out its work areas and navigates with a precision of 2-3 cm. The satellite-based technology enables Ceora to work within virtual boundaries, making it an easy and flexible solution for large green areas. Customers are able to map out different zones within the work area and set different cutting schedules and heights. All of this is controlled via their smartphones, meaning maintenance during the cutting season is limited to changing blades and cleaning. Husqvarna’s range of Automower robotic mowers cover smaller areas than Ceora, suitable for up to 150000sqm depending on model choice. Automower uses smart Husqvarna technology that automatically cuts a little grass at a time while returning mulched clippings to the sward where they offer a nutritional benefit which can improve lawn quality.

In addition to the new features, the model is based on Husqvarna’s r 500-series chassis with its characteristic articulated steering that simplifies mowing around trees, benches and other obstacles. Tracmaster Ltd has introduced the Bluebird FM 23-53 radiocontrolled swing tip blade mower. It has a hybrid power
Tracmaster Bluebird
system integrating a Loncin 224cc engine with a 28V battery engine producing 600W. Electric motors provide the drive for the tracks, giving precise control of its movement, including 360deg rotation. Forward speed is up to 2.82km/hr. The Bluebird FM 23-53 is equipped with a remote control allowing operators to manage the machine’s functions from a distance, with a control range of up to 200 metres. It is mounted on robust tracks to tackle any terrain (slopes up to 25deg and is designed for cutting tall and dense grass, as well as clearing undergrowth, even on steep inclines. Cutting height can be adjusted from 30 to 60mm via a button om the remote control. Agria UK has introduced a new fully electric remote-controlled mower alongside its two existing hybrid machines, capable of cutting banks up to 50deg, with the agria 9600 reaching 55deg.
variable and bi-directional giving operators full scope to maximise efficiency and work in tight spaces. For example with a flail mower attachment, such as a Muthing Flail, unkempt areas can be tamed with vegetation shredded into fragments for faster decomposition. Each full charge of the lithiumion battery gives five hours of machine time in flail mode. An optional fast charger is available that charges the battery from 15% to 100% in just one hour. Stepless and brushless- electric drive means the process is quiet and can work in low noise areas.
The new arrival is the agria 9700e tool carrier. Equivalent to a 30hp tractor it can power existing equipment up to 300kg via a standard three-point linkage, CAT 1. The PTO drive is both
Ryetec Robofox
Andy Kerr, lead demonstrator for both Wiedenmann UK and Agria UK says: “All three machines operate via a remote-control pad with joystick, allowing the operator to stand up to 100 metres away. With their low centre of gravity, they can tackle steep inclines. Tilt and vibration sensors are built into the remote-control pad in case the operator accidentally trips or falls. When these sensors are triggered, the machine shuts down completely.” “The agria 9700e is carbon neutral and 100% electric – with brushless drive technology, the constant low voltage requires little engine power to drive. This allows maximum
horsepower to be directed to the blades, giving excellent mulching of the grass, and leaving negligible amounts on the surface.” Agria’s two hybrid remote mowers - the 9500 and its bigger sister, the 9600 - are also capable of mowing tall and tough grass areas on both the flat and on steep banking. The 9500 is the entry level model. It has a Kawasaki 12.7 kw engine and working width of 80 cm. The 9600 is wider at 112 cm and more powerful (17 kw), and includes a high grass sickle mulcher mowing mechanism, comprising two-blade carrier with four swing blades. For steep mowing or where traffic flow
makes for dangerous situations for operators the Ryetec Robofox is ideal. Operators can control the tracked Robofox from a safe distance with the remote control while the compact enginedriven hybrid or fully electric version can make short work of difficult to access areas and is easily transported from site to site with a van or pick-up thanks to a relatively light weight of 500kg. These machines can also be operated with a GPS map and automatic steering system to reduce operator fatigue and improve efficiency.

Major Equipment hedge cutting road show Raymo is perfect for difficult to access areas If you need to maintain very steep slopes, grassed banks around lakes or waterways or just difficult to access areas, the Raymo electric remote-control mower is the machine of choice. It has been designed with a low overall height of only 51 cm which together with a low centre of gravity, 4WD, and a zero turn steering system allows the Raymo to tackle steep slopes, grassed banks and low obstacles with ease. The operator controls the Raymo via an industrial-grade remote control so benefiting from zero emissions, low-noise and no vibrations. Being able to stand away from the mower and the ground being cut, the operator is kept away from dangerous hazards such as slopes, deep water etc. Three rotary decks, 42”, 52” and 46” Craft are available for the Raymo depending upon the type
of grass to be cut and maintained. The 48 Craft deck is a heavy-duty deck for areas that are cut only once a year. Two sickle-blade mowers, either single or dual are ideal for maintaining wildflower or bio-diversity areas. A new option, just launched is the R14 SFINX swing arm post mower which attaches to the side of the Raymo and allows posts, trees and similar obstacles to cut around. In open areas it increases the cutting width of the Raymo, but will then retract automatically when it encounters a post or tree etc. The R14 SFINX may be fitted to the left or right or both sides of the Raymo. The Raymo remote control electric mower cuts faster than a strimmer and will solve your health and safety problems when cutting slopes, banks and difficult to access areas. ISEKI Enquiry 50

Major Equipment recently announced the launch of a Hedge Cutter head with the power and performance to tackle the most vigorous jobs. The MJ39 Hedge Cutter head produces a clean finish on hedgerows, shrubs and verges at fast forward speeds thanks to the impressive ‘blender-style’ mulching capabilities of the rotary head. The gearbox driveline powers twin rotors and eight overlapping blades to deliver a tidy finish when thinning material or clearing dense brush,
all in one pass. The hydraulic motor is fitted with an overrun clutch. The 1.43m heavy duty deck really shines turning overgrown hedges and scrubby areas into manageable structures for landscape control. The MAJOR Hedge Cutter outperforms flail head systems in both productivity and maintenance. With less wearing parts, the MJ39 is a durable and reliable attachment for contractors, councils and operators demanding minimal downtime and total cost of ownership. The full-length roller controls the cutting height between 40mm
– 100mm for verge work and can be moved up and away for hedge cutting. An adjustable front hood, hydraulically or manually enabled, controls the amount of material entering the cutting chamber. Deep deck sides ensure mulch is retained in the hedgerow. To celebrate the launch, Major Equipment is hosting a hedge cutter roadshow from 26-29 February 2024. Whisper Twister is invaluable year round
Trilo M3 delivers large savings
Wiedenmann UK’s Whisper Twister has earned a fierce reputation for its reliability and performance.
An M3 Multipurpose from Trilo has become a valuable extra member of the team at Knaresborough Golf Club, following an extensive search for a more time-friendly solution to the task of leaf clearance.
As its name suggests, its trailblazing patented whisper turbine allows operation in low noise places like schools, hospitals, and residential areas. Another patented mechanism, its twisting prowess, means it can be swivelled steadily by 180º with only one hydraulic cylinder. Litter or leaves can be blown continuously in one direction without the need to back up, the swivel nozzle working from left to right as appropriate. When it comes to ‘puff’, an enviable 200 m³ per minute blow
capacity makes it literally a force to be reckoned with. Up and down adjustments can be made to its nozzle, tailoring its air stream to suit the prevailing conditions. Since its launch additional hydraulic and front mounted options heave been added, together with an invaluable goose neck spout, ensuring the Whisper Twister remains the class-leading performer in its field. Brian Dunne, Course Superintendent at Adare Manor Old Course, Adare, County Limerick has owned his Whisper Twister for over 15 years delivered by his longstanding dealer, Seamus Weldon at Killarney.
“We’d be lost without ours. From October to December, its out every day of the week on leaf clearance duty. Our course is lined with beech and oak trees so there’s plenty of work. One of the team on our small tractor blows the leaves into lines and our collector follows behind. “It literally has dozens of uses; we use it to dry off the fairways or tee boxes, it helps all year round with presentation and tidying and of course, when we’ve had storms, it’s come into its own.” Wiedenmann UK Enquiry 61
A working width of 1.5m makes the unit both compact and manoeuvrable, while the hopper capacity of 3m3 and hand-held suction hose makes vacuuming
of materials from large or hardto-reach areas a breeze. Vanmac Enquiry 62
Purchased with both a flail rotor and brush, not only has the M3 delivered versatility for tasks around the course and throughout the maintenance calendar, its large capacity and highproductivity have also resulted in large fuel and labour savings. The Trilo M3 Multipurpose is a 3-in-1 machine that, with a range of optional attachments, can facilitate a range of operations including scarification, cut and collect and debris clearance.

Powerful blower from Turfco Turfco’s Torrent 2 is powerful all-purpose blower, available in tow-behind or tractormounted pto-driven formats and delivering unprecedented control over air speed, air direction, noise management and fuel consumption. This is a precision clean-up tool that can used year-round taking golf courses or grounds to a new level. Built on a heavy-duty frame with a rugged draw bar and adjustable hitch the Torrent 2 is designed for durability. The one-piece nozzle is made of impact resistant, roto-moulded polyethylene. The enclosed deck dramatically reduces debris pickup from below the blower, decreasing wear on the turbine and minimising overall dust and debris around the operator.
Experience the convenience of a fully charged battery in just eight minutes with Kress’s Commercial CyberTank. Say goodbye to wasting time and money at the petrol station - relish in the freedom of a hassle-free clean energy solution that keeps you moving without interruptions.
The wireless controller technology allows the operator to dial in the exact nozzle direction for optimal performance with fast, 360-degree nozzle rotation. Multiple air speed settings make it quick and easy to increase or decrease blowing force, while a dedicated button allows the operator to idle down when people are near. The controller also features a shutdown switch that stops the engine at the press of a button. An optional auxiliary control kit is available should the wireless controller be lost or damaged. The operator simply flips a switch from wireless to auxiliary and can then control the machine’s speed and direction. Turfco Enquiry 63
