Spraying advice issued ahead of industry get-together at BTME 2015
If greenkeepers or groundsmen had to rank their machines by order of importance, sprayers would probably come last.
With a usual replacement cycle of 10 to 15 years sprayers’ performance can be seriously affected resulting in inaccurate spraying which may have a direct impact on the environment. This has triggered new obligations regarding the regular inspection of plant protection product application equipment.
Introduced by HSE under the 2012 Plant Protection Regulation, sustainable use of pesticide, the new obligation is taking effect by the 26 November 2016 and will be implemented by the AEA via approved NSTS test centres. This will affect all sprayers in use (except knapsacks and handheld sprayers).
Sprayer owners must ensure it is inspected to certain timetables. Equipment that is not in use or that which is not used for applying pesticides is not affected. Knapsack and handheld sprayers will be exempt from the requirement to pass inspection.
Different inspection interval will apply to boom sprayers greater than 3m, sprayers attached to train or aircraft and air assisted broadcast sprayers. More detailed information regarding timelines can be found on the HSE website.
Specialists from KUHN Amenity Pro will be at BTME 2015 in Harrogate (Hall C, Stand C53) to highlight the importance of good quality spraying equipment and maintenance.
This year’s exhibition - taking place between January 20-22, with Continue to Learn covering
January 18-21 and the Turf Managers’ Conference taking place on 19 January – will see more than 100 companies taking part showcasing a variety of products and services.
BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “Our focus is now firmly on ensuring BTME 2015 builds on the excellent foundations of recent BTMEs which have been overwhelming successes.
“For 2015 we’re particularly proud of our Continue to Learn programme which is the largest and most comprehensive ever.”
We have an in-depth preview of this year’s exhibition in this month’s magazine and will review of the event in February.

Timberplay goes green with eco-friendly option
Timberplay has taken the pioneering step of promoting untreated Mountain Larch as their standard offer across their range of play equipment.
Customers will still have the option of using cheaper chemically impregnated timbers but Mountain Larch with steel footings will now
be the default offer as long term studies have concluded this option performs just as well, if not better than the alternative and is better for the environment.
Paul Collings, Managing Director at Timberplay, said: “The mountain larch gains its rot resistance through the slow growth
of the trees in the mountains, making the timber very dense and difficult for fungi to eat, whereas the fungicidal chemicals that are used as preservatives on pines and firs are effectively poisons that are subsequently leeched into the environment.
“Increasingly tough European environmental regulations are also gradually reducing the effectiveness of such chemical impregnation.”
Timberplay is the UK supplier of play equipment from Richter Spielgeräte.

Welcome...
Welcome to the first issue of our magazine for 2015. It is a new year, with new challenges and new opportunities. The next 12 months provides the industry with the chance to get the right messages across regarding the value of the work that is done, the innovation and expertise that exists and that is exported to a growing number of countries around the world and the important role it plays in the wider economy.
Those messages will be heard loud and clear in Harrogate with this year’s BTME exhibition. BIGGA has built on the success of the event in recent years to put together a week-long programme that will hopefully kick-start the year. We are carrying a preview of BTME 2015 in this month’s issue and will review the event next month’s magazine.
January also sees another type of exhibition that could help promote the industry to a wider audience. Curated by The Building Centre and the Landscape Institute, “Rethinking the Urban Landscape” highlights how landscape architecture can offer sustainable solutions to the big challenges facing contemporary urban society including flooding and public health.
Showcasing some of the UK’s most powerful contemporary landscape projects including King’s Cross and the Olympic Park, alongside small, community-led schemes including pocket parks and community allotments, the exhibition will highlight the importance of investing in green infrastructure if our cities are to become more liveable, healthy and safe.
The event will show how creating healthier, safer and happier places in which people can live, work and play, can effectively counter blights on modern life such as flooding and poor air quality. It will also spearhead calls for more long-term and joined-up thinking from government and developers, to ensure that landscape know-how is embedded into planning, transport and environmental policies.
Elsewhere this month we also put a spot light on the ATV and UTV markets with a comprehensive overview from Jane Carley, as well as a feature on chainsaws and forestry equipment. There is also our usual round up of industry news and product innovation.
Welcome to 2015. Let’s keep the spotlight firmly on the industry throughout the next 12 months and beyond.

Industry mourns passing of former editor
Mike Beardall, the former editor of The Groundsman magazine, passed away in December.
Mike began his career in newspaper journalism and magazines before launching Oakfield Media, offering a full publishing, public relations and media training service, in 1995. As part of his publishing portfolio he became editor of The Groundsman, the official magazine of the Institute of Groundsmanship – a post he held for eleven years, until December 2006.

headline sponsor Rigby Taylor, recognise excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance achieved by registered members of the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI).
Over 110 entries were received this year and a total of 79 awards made. The presentation of the Grand Award to Rick Davies, Operations Director of Willerby Landscapes, was made by sponsor Rigby Taylor’s Executive Chairman Chris Clark.
Willerby Landscapes, who are based in Kent, were awarded the Grand Award - BALI’s highest accolade - at this year’s ceremony for the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, South Park Plaza scheme. This very extensive and challenging project saw the successful transition of the Olympic Park’s South Park and Carpenter’s Lock areas into legacy under extremely tight completion deadlines.
Following clearance of the concourse ‘post Games’ by the main contractor, Willerby
carried out extensive remodelling of levels and grounds involving major engineering works, before undertaking the construction of hard landscape features across the entire area and constructing and installing decking and linear seating.
The intelligent use of off-site prefabrication provided a solution to help overcome the challenging time constraints.

Terrain Aeration ensures rain doesn’t stop play
Run by its members, Essex based Radwinter Bowls Club has a number of teams playing in the Essex and Steeple Bumstead leagues.
The members decided to call in Terrain Aeration and have the green aerated down to a metre, producing vertical drain channels over the whole area.
Terrain used their Scamper Terralift, a lightweight version of their Airforce machine and, while the 660kg compressor unit remained stationary off the green, the Scamper worked across the area in rows two metres apart, creating 400 onemetre deep drainage holes. This is to allow drainage to the sub soil and essential to the process is the shattering of the subsoil with an air blast.
A ‘normal’ bowling green takes about four to five hours to treat but, in the case of Radwinter, the length of time it took to hammer the probe into the obdurate clay stretched the process to over eight hours. The treatment was followed by scarification, top dressing and over seeding.

The tractors were delivered earlier this year by Farol’s Hinckley outlet on a two-year lease contract with a 1000 hours a year service clause, in an initial package that also included a Gator 6x4 utility vehicle.
The tractors were not chosen randomly and increased the available power. They are used to move the snow and put it back
where it's needed, which involves pushing the material back up the slopes, which include a 1-in-7 on the main run.
They also drive the stone buriers used for decompacting, which require a decent amount of power.
The Snowdome therefore specified the models that gave it the highest horsepower in a compact unit with a ROPS frame, as a cab would make them too top heavy. On standard turf tyres the tractors have plenty of traction.
Moving snow around the runs is one of the main jobs carried out
by the Gator, which is also used to move personnel, materials and tools around the SnowDome and contributes overall to the efficient running of the venue.
As a result of the success of these John Deere machines, the SnowDome has more recently taken delivery of two new 2032R 32hp compact tractors with H130 loaders and 51in materials buckets, which are used to maintain the snow on the academy slopes and the snow play area.

Avant proves perfect for disability charity
Leading disability charity, Papworth Trust, has recently used a donation from the Monsanto Fund to obtain an Avant 420 compact, multi-purpose tool carrier as a key piece of equipment for its 12 acre farm near Newtown in Powys.
Farm manager Natalie Webster said: "We had almost given up
hope of ever finding a suitable machine until we were introduced to the Avant by a local machinery dealer.
"As soon as we saw it we knew it was perfect for us as it was the only machine we'd seen that ticked all the boxes in terms of size, versatility and ease of use."
A 420 model was therefore soon delivered by Beddoes Compact Plant Sales, complete with standard bucket, a mower attachment, harrow and set of pallet forks and all within the farm's available budget thanks to a sharp pencil.
The Avant 420 model chosen for use at Kerry Farm is powered by a reliable Kubota 14 kW (20 hp)

The going’s great at York Racecourse
Award-winning York Racecourse has proved its pedigree once again as perfect racing turf returns to one of the country’s top venues following a two-year programme of extensive resurfacing.
Rich alluvial silt and clay deposits left by the River Ouse had created issues for the grounds team, reports head groundsman Adrian Kay, whose team has been crowned the Institute of Groundsmanship John Deere Professional Horse Racing Grounds Team of the Year award
“We lie in the river’s floodplain and the conditions had allowed weed grasses such as Poa annua, to proliferate, along with a major build-up of thatch,” he explains.
“Weed grass is always prone to disease and creates a lot of organic matter, which can prevent water penetrating to the rootzone. A 10ml layer of thatch is fine but the course had accumulated 2530ml, which was far too thick.”
The 2014 IOG Groundsman of the Year called in sports contractor Chappelow Sports Turf to conduct a programme of remedial work to rectify the problem, beginning two years ago with Koroing off the South Bend extension, which was reseeded with Limagrain MM22 ryegrass mix – “a favourite of mine”, says Kay.

New John Deere mower at BTME 2015
One of John Deere’s new A Model fairway mowers, a 7700A PrecisionCut model, will be shown for the first time at BTME 2015 in Harrogate.
The company will be taking a small-scale stand to highlight the range’s advanced technology features, which are designed to produce a higher quality finish on golf courses and other sports and amenity turf areas, as well as provide users with greater control of the machines and easier operator training.
Based on extensive feedback from greenkeepers and other golf and turf industry professionals, these features include a simple to use TechControl digital display, LoadMatch as used on the John
Deere compact tractor range, and OnCourse Technology for improved overall performance and reliability, better diagnostics and increased operator comfort.
The simple to use, password protected TechControl display enables the course manager, head greenkeeper or deputy to quickly set or change mowing, turning and transport speeds, for example, to limit variations in performance by different operators and provide a more consistent, quality finish. Onboard visual diagnostics and the ability to set regular service intervals also help to maximise productive time.
In addition, the new A Model ECut hybrid electric fairway
mowers can be set to automatically deliver reduced engine speed during mowing, with fuel savings of up to 30 per cent.
John Deere will also be joining BIGGA in announcing the regional winners of a special membership promotion at the show. Five lucky members of BIGGA (plus one GCSAI

With so many new products The Grass Group has had to double its stand size at BTME 2015.
In part it’s to make room for new signing GKB machinery, plus an expanded showing from Trilo. Established brands like ATT, RotaDairon and CTI Tines have also been accommodated.
One of the highlights from the Trilo portfolio will be the BL960 Blower, designed to be one of the most powerful on the market. The BL960 is fitted with a
960mm fan complete with 9 fan blades providing a large capacity and far reaching air making it ideal for use in large parks or on the golf course. It is driven by a Walterscheid PTO shaft and can optionally be equipped with a 180 degree reversible spouts which can be operated from the driver’s seat.
Selected out of the innovative GKB range of equipment will be the Sandfiller. This machine is ideal for golf courses and sports fields where surface water and
moss forming are a problem. It provides economic and environmentally-friendly aeration of the top layer by using three adjustable depth rollers and a slitting rotor. It can then fill the trenches with sand - the flow of which is controlled hydraulically by a valve on the side of the machine.
Following on the heels of last year’s launch of the ATT INFiNiSystem in a 26” configuration, comes a whopping 30” version! This pedestrian unit will be kept under wraps until its launch at BTME 2015.
Making its first appearance at BTME, and extending the comprehensive range of seeding machinery available from RotaDairon, is the pedestrian propelled SEED-CAR - perfect for small spaces, or those with difficult accesses, it has a working width of just 700mm and weighs in at 51kg, but offers a 55 litre capacity. The SEED-
CAR has an integral 18kg rear roller and height adjustable handlebar, complete will all controls, for easy seed distribution.
No newcomer to BTME is CTI Tines, exclusively from The Grass Group. In the field of replacement tines and bedknives, their one piece solid rod construction from 4140 superior steel is gaining acknowledgement as 'best-in-class'. They exceed the norm and lead to a longer life, with optimum wear, and are considered to provide significant operational performance with value for money.
Smokers will be sad not to see (lean on!) a Progressive mower outside of Hall A but that slot will be taken by a Trilo S3 - a compact and economical vacuum sweeper with a loading capacity of three cubic metres.

Charterhouse brings Redexim and Graden products together
A new chapter in the history of Charterhouse Turf Machinery will unveil itself at BTME 2015 on stand B48 when ‘Green’ joins ‘Red’.
For the first time in Harrogate, Graden machines will complement the Redexim equipment for the care and maintenance of natural turf surfaces.
The Graden range of verticutters are renowned for their depth of cut as well as their ingenuity with products like the Contour Sand Injector (CSI) – a scarifier/aerator with the ability to scarify to any depth between 1mm-40mm, whilst simultaneously backfilling the grooves with either sand or a combination of sand and seed. Because it is able to do both jobs in one pass, play downtime is reduced without causing any detrimental effect to the firmness of the ground. From the Redexim stable comes innovative machinery like the
Verti-Quake 2516 - a linear aerator which decompacts the soil via 18 rotating off-set blades. With a working width of 1.6m, the VertiQuake works to a depth of 250mm to vastly improve drainage, root development and the uptake of moisture and nutrients.
Charterhouse will also be displaying the DS800 topdresser from their highly successful Rink range. This twin-disc topdresser spreads material up to 15m wide and can successfully operate light, heavy or wet applications.
The DS800 has a hopper capacity of 0.8m3, a working speed of 19mph and the benefit that the spreading pattern and densitydetermined by the tractor spinner and conveyor belt speed - can all be controlled easily from the tractor seat.

Hastings opts for LED energy saving scheme
Pressure on public spending and a commitment to making the best use of public resources has meant that East Sussex County Council (ESCC) has focussed on a more appropriate level of lighting, where and when it is of most benefit.
It could not carry on providing street lighting in exactly the same way it had been, like so many other authorities it has been forced to make very difficult decisions in order to reach significant savings over the coming years. ESCC were spending close to £1.4 million a year on electricity for street lighting and has now opted for LED with Colas.
Following on from the successful LED lantern replacement scheme in Eastbourne, Hastings is the next town to benefit from the installation of this lighting for its residential roads. LED is state of
the art in the lighting industry and gives a white light which enables good colour rendering, meaning colours can be seen and facial recognition is made easier.
The LED lighting units range from 8 LED 16 watt units (equivalent to the original style 35w low pressure Sodium lanterns consuming approximately 58 watts each) up to 40 LED 64 watt units (equivalent to the original 90watt low pressure Sodium lamps consuming 110 watts each). These changes will save in the region of £130K per annum on electricity costs, add to this the (CO2) Carbon, a saving estimated to be some 800 tonnes. The scheme will contribute significantly to the overall County Council demand to reduce its costs.
Free counter-terrorism guide for buildings and venues
As police forces across the country take to the streets to advise the public as part of Counter-terrorism Awareness Week, hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) security specialist, Townscape Products, is informing building and venue managers on the role they must play.
The current terror threat for the UK is ‘severe’, the highest it’s been since 2011, and Jonathan Goss, managing director of Townscape Products, is warning any facility which attracts a high concentration of people needs to review its perimeter security measures.
As part of Counter-terrorism Awareness Week, Townscape is providing building owners,
architects and facilities managers with a free perimeter protection factsheet, advising them on how they can create a robust vehicle
barrier system. This free guide can be downloaded from the Townscape website –www.townscapeproducts.co.uk
Townscape has been providing integrated PAS 68 HVM solutions to many of the UK’s largest airports, utilities infrastructure, visitor attractions, government and public buildings.
Townscape’s Counter Terror (CT) Block is a perimeter security system designed to immobilise a 7.5 tonne vehicle traveling at 40mph. The CT Block requires only very shallow (100mm) foundations, making it inexpensive to install without compromising on building security.

Coldrooms are blooming good
Williams Refrigeration provides coldrooms for the storage of cut flowers to florists and garden centres.
The importance of maintaining the ‘cold chain’, as a flower makes its way on the journey from the grower to the flower shop and onto the shelf, shouldn’t be underestimated.
Temperature affects flowers in many ways: water loss, flower opening, stem bending, petal wilting, flower fall, the possibility of infection.
Cut flowers are held at their optimum temperature in a coldroom, thus preserving them and increasing their shelf life. However, not all florists and garden centres have acres of space - that’s where British manufacturer Williams comes in.
Williams offers a truly flexible coldroom solution, featuring a modular construction and a range of panel sizes that allow designers to create bespoke rooms to virtually any size or shape. These can be assembled on-site, overcoming any accessibility problems.
A removable POD refrigeration system delivers enhanced storage capacity and hassle free maintenance. There are also options of movable partition walls for dual compartment rooms, which can be moved to increase or decrease space.
Where space is really limited Williams can supply exterior coldrooms that can be sited adjacent to buildings.
For optimum thermal efficiency Williams coldrooms are built
with 90mm, zero ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) foam insulated panels. Camlocks are foamed in to tongue and groove joints for a tight locking stable structure which eliminates the risk of ice build-up in joints and ensures a ‘thermal envelope’.

BAR EXTREME provides attractive alternative
Neil Mitchell from Greentech Sportsturf Ltd supplies Royal Aberdeen Golf Club with its Barenbrug grass seed and the course is looking better than ever.
Seven years ago Head Greenkeeper Robert Patterson embarked on a programme to replace all gravel paths. With 15,000 rounds played across the year, Robert believes a
standard fescue bent turf would not withstand the wear pressure on walkways.
Instead he overseeds the paths three to four times a year with the fine-leafed ryegrasses in Barenbrug BAR EXTREME to ensure they can withstand heavy foot fall while still looking managed and well presented. These narrow, hightraffic paths are maintained at the
same level as the fairways: they are aerated, overseeded and fed in the same way.
According to Robert, the results after taking the hard pathways back to grass has made a huge visual improvement - softening the landscape of the entire course.

New and improved GoGreen
Over recent years, professionals in the groundscare and amenity industry have turned to Sherriff Amenity’s GoGreen complexed iron range.
The popular products have now been updated as a new formulation. Renowned for delivering outstanding results, the GoGreen range is available as long-lasting iron granules (GoGreen Granules) and in liquid form (GoGreen Plus).
They have now both been enhanced with the addition of a
new dual action wetting agent which utilises new surfactant technology.
The wetting agent formulation adds a further mode of action and allows the iron to be more quickly taken up by the plant by having a penetrant action, leading to excellent spreading effects, giving better coverage on the leaf surface.
The new formulation will appeal to dedicated users of the GoGreen range because none of the original components are removed.
The GoGreen range is available exclusively from Sherriff Amenity.

Conditioner unlocks potential of poor quality soils
Using a silicate colloid based soil conditioner to promote plant growth can help landscapers to maximise the potential of manufactured, compacted and contaminated soils, including those polluted by heavy metals.
Richard Brown, amenity sales manager for Germinal, recommends the use of a phosphate-based electrolyte fertiliser in all scenarios where poor soil quality presents a barrier to effective vegetation establishment.
Getting plants to establish effectively on the types of lowgrade soils commonly associated with recently developed landscapes or road verges is a commonly occurring problem. Manufactured, compacted and contaminated ground often lacks the soil structure and nutrient content to enable young seedlings to exhibit vigorous growth, while salt and heavy metal burdening at road verges can also result in lack lustre foliage.
However, the use of a pre-seeding fertiliser and soil conditioner that improves soil structure and enhances nutrient availability and uptake can help to combat many of these problems, as Richard Brown of Germinal explains.
“Landscapers and landscape architects are regularly faced with the challenge of getting vegetation to grow in locations where soil quality is disadvantageous to viable plant growth. By using an electrolyte based soil conditioner, low-grade soils can be improved and become capable of allowing vegetation to thrive.”
Containing an electrolyte system of sodium silicate and phosphate, Agrosil LR improves soil structure and drainage by
forming large molecules of porous silicate gels or colloids. These colloids not only improve soil porosity, but can also lock up heavy metals such as lead or cadmium and can protect plants from fungal pathogens such as Fusarium and leaf spot.
Agrosil LR enhances phosphate availability to plant roots, making the poorest quality and most nutrient deficient soils capable of supporting viable plant growth.
“Young seedlings require very few nutrients other than phosphate during the early stages of growth,” Mr Brown continues. “Applying a top dressing at 35 to 50g/m2 prior to seeding, or as an under-turf treatment at 100 to 120 g/m2, will not only improve the structure of the soil, but also provide the necessary nutrients for vegetation to grow in impoverished, manufactured and contaminated soils.”
Agrosil LR has a 20% total phosphate content (as P2O5) and contains 36% mainly reversibly soluble silicate. It has been shown to penetrate soil to a depth of 30cm where it activates the growth of roots by creating water and air storage cells within the structure of the soil. This improves the capillary transport of water and increases the utilisation of nutrients by making more phosphate available and reducing the risk of salt shock.
Agrosil LR also protects against fungal infections such as Fusarium, leaf spot and powdery mildew by promoting a strong increase of silicate in the leaf which prevents these diseases from taking hold.

Gianni Ferrari launches unique hedge cutter
The Gianni Ferrari 2-side reach arm hedgecutter offers a real alternative to the common flail models. It brings with it an environmentally friendly approach to controlling hedgerows.
A sickle bar replaces the contraversial flail action which is so often blamed for the dramatic ripping apart of hedges. The effect is an effecient, clean and far less drastic cut which reduces disturburance of the resident wildlife to an absolute minimum.
The Gianni Ferrari cutting system uses a sickle bar with reciprocating blades to produce a scissor–like sharp, neat cut. The “SCH Schumacher” teeth produce a low impact but efficient, clean cut on branches up to 3cm diameter while protecting small tiny branches by slicing through them rather than tearing them apart. Unlike tractor mounted hedge cutters, the Gianni Ferrari hedge cutter is fully
integrated on the front of Gianni Ferrari Turbo Loader traction unit.
It offers greater visibility, comfort and safety with the advantage of the operator always looking forward - not over his shoulder. He can anticipate and control the
cutting line and action from the drivers seat using the joystick.
An impressive extended reach will cut up to 710 cm using the vertical bar and 588 cm with the horizontal bar.
Fitted as standard, the articulated reach arm allows the hedge trimmer to work on both sides of a hedge, cutting both right and left sides with ease.

Makita introduces compact pole hedge trimmer
Makita continues to expand their professional grounds care and maintenance range with the new Makita EN5950SH long reach hedge trimmer
It is designed for landscape contractor operations where the 1 metre handle extension enables the 590mm blade to reach further across the hedge. This is a straight hedge trimmer without blade angle adjustment, however with its compact length it still gives good reach, making it ideal for deep hedges and shrubs where a full length pole trimmer is too long, and perfect for transportation in smaller commercial vehicles.
The new Makita EN5950SH is powered by the efficient Makita MM4 4-stroke petrol engine. This
25.4cc version delivers 1.03hp and will run up to 10,000rpm. The MM4 engine is very economic with low fuel consumption, low running costs and low emissions and is lightweight and comfortable to use. Moreover the wet sump oil pressure lubrication system enables this trimmer to be used at any angle.
The 590mm blade is double sided meaning it will cut on both sides for maximum productivity. The blade will run up to 2,100 strokes per minute and will cut 21mm diameter branches. Weighing just 6.0kg, this well balanced trimmer has an ergonomically designed forward D handle and rear control grip handle for maximum machine control.
Tracked dumpers help clear the way
The Hinowa TX2500 TraXporter, available from Access Platform Sales is a powerful, robust 2.5t capacity tracked dumper with a swivel skip which can be operated at the same time as the vehicle is in motion, an advantage over most of its competitors.
It also has a 180° rotating seat and controls, so the operator can always face in the direction of travel. The TraXporter is already in production and available to order.
Designed for difficult ground conditions, the TX2500 has a top speed of 7.5mph and a Kubota 4cylinder 35.9kW (48.8hp) diesel engine. The rubber tracks utilise two fixed and four floating rollers, for powerful and smooth traction. The operator is protected by an FOPS-approved cage and a safety belt. The simple controls include two levers for steering and a smooth accelerator pedal, as well as a one-touch parking
brake. The dumper is rated for 1.49m³. Slewing the skip also enables efficient tipping from either side or the rear.
As a tracked machine, it causes little or no ground disturbance when traversing lawns or grass, making them ideal for tree work in landscaped areas. APS is the exclusive UK distributor for all Hinowa construction, lifting and material handling products.

PSD Groundscare is the exclusive distributor for the Eliet range of products throughout the UK.
The launch of the new Super Prof builds on the existing key features making it even more user friendly, more efficient and more environmentally friendly. One of the key additions is the air-blown chip removal via a 360o rotatable discharge chute that will blow the chips to a height of two meters.
Over the years the Super Prof has earned a well-deserved reputation of being capable of processing almost any kind of green waste. This system produces small chips by keeping them in the chipping chamber longer and are then discharged via the chute. An additional feature is the introduction of a 30% larger infeed opening for disposing of bulkier and loose waste.
The Super Prof remains a highly efficient 4 Season Shredder that is the envy of all. In the spring
and autumn there is a lot of green waste to be processed and the abundance of wet material may clog up other shredders and in summer and winter the Super Pro deals with the high usage volume of shredding wood and shrubbery impeccably whilst remaining highly efficient.
The new model will be launched at LAMMA on January 21 and 22, so visit PSD Groundscare in hall 8 on stand 8120 and take a look at this fantastic new machine from leading manufacturer ELIET.

New Reform Metrac H8X in demand
Simon Richard Ltd say the new 81.5hp turbo engined compact Metrac H8X bank tractor announced recently, is in real demand.
Both Aberdeen Council, through the Forfar based Gammies dealership and Natural Resources Wales via Bourne based A J Scambler dealership, having placed orders for February 2015 delivery. Simon Richard said: “The new model meets both environmental
standards and customer expectations for more power. The engine achieves emission level 3B and operator comfort features include air conditioning and new instrument cluster. Like all Metracs the H8X is rated to 45 degrees and whilst addressing operator health & safety issues is also a year round performer as a part of the ground care fleet”
Graden Sand Injector wins new friends
One company that knows better than most about organic matter control is Ecosol Turfcare.
It has worked with Charterhouse Turf Machinery to take delivery of a new Graden Contour Sand Injection machine, a scarifier/aerator with the ability to scarify to any depth from 1mm to 40mm, whilst simultaneously backfilling the grooves with either sand or a combination of sand and seed to improve drainage and rooting.
It works to remove thatch and organic matter that might impede
water movement. It sinks it into the ground incredibly deeply compared to a conventional scarifier using 2mm wide or 3mm wide blades spaced at 25mm centres to remove such matter and offer stability to the surface of the green.
The result is a lovely, true level surface with very little sign of any damage with only the parallel grooves visible. The green is playable virtually immediately, certainly playable within an hour or two.

Kioti has expanded its Mechron UTV series with four new petrol and diesel models being launched by UK importer RECO.
Reco Area Sales Manager Steven Haynes said “With the addition of the four new Mechron UTVs to our line-up we have now a full product offering to suit the varied customer base that makes up the growing UTV market.”
The new Mechron 250 and 500 petrol utility vehicles are designed with the leisure market in mind with speeds of up to 65kph. Both models are supplied in Kioti orange as standard and a camo exterior option is available for the 500 model.
Despite being a compact machine the Mechron 250 petrol UTV offers a manual tipping cargo box with 80kg carrying capacity. It has a mid-mounted electronic fuel injected 16hp engine, plus rack and pinion steering. There is adequate space for two people
with a vinyl bench seat that can be removed for ease of access to the engine bay.
In comparison the larger Mechron 500 petrol UTV is powered by an18hp water cooled single cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection as standard. The cargo box has 200kg carrying capacity.
Twin high back ‘sports style’ bucket seats, with automotive style seat belts and suspension on all wheels offer a comfortable ride.
Both models feature Dual range CVT, engaged using a dash mounted lever.
Built on an extended Mechron 2210 chassis, the new 2230 model is equipped with the same features as found on current models. Generous ground clearance and power steering are standard and the 2230 includes a 500kg capacity cargo box that
is 300mm longer than the standard box.
Kioti is also launching a four-seat diesel Mechron 2240 UTV. This has been designed to carry four passengers plus a full load.
The Mechron 2240 UTV has been designed with front and back ‘walk-through’ design to offer plenty of leg room for the operator and passengers.
The rear cargo box is the same as on the 2200/2100 models, with a capacity of 300kg and this model also features a large under seat storage box that is split into different sized sections.
Due to the longer chassis the frame rails have been double stacked for additional strength. Hydraulic power steering is included as standard, along with CVT Hi + Low gear plus selectable two- or four-wheel drive.
Redesigned models
Kubota has updated its top selling diesel ATV range with the RTVX900, which offers increased towing capacity and improved
performance from a new chassis, uprated suspension and redesigned HST transmission.
The new chassis design gives ground clearance of 260mm, tow hitch sockets front and rear and heavy duty skid plates, while front and rear suspensions now use a wishbone system and are height adjustable for carrying loads or use as a runabout. Anti-rollbars and stabiliser links cut body roll and further boost traction.
Power is supplied by a 21.6hp Kubota D902 engine, driving through a new higher capacity two-range hydrostatic transmission, designed to offer increase torque and faster response. Top speed is 40kph and inboard wet disc brakes offer back-up to Kubota’s proven dynamic braking, while an automatic limited slip differential in front and foot-operated differential to the rear improve performance in muddy conditions.
Towing capacity is now 1000kg, while the 500kg capacity cargo
bed had hydraulic tipping as standard.
UK specification includes a Mauser ROPS with roof; cab kits which can include heater, sun visor and radio are easily fitted, and cabin noise levels have been reduced to 83db. Available in orange (worksite) and camo (recreational) finishes, both versions can be road homologated.
Electric power
Ransomes Jacobsen has introduced the all-electric Cushman Hauler PRO
and PRO X, which feature a 72volt AC drivetrain said to offer a range and power comparable to petrol-powered machines.
"This new Cushman Hauler PRO gives Course Managers the range and power of a petrol-powered utility vehicle, but in a silent, allelectric package that is fast becoming the norm," said Ransomes Jacobsen’s Richard Tyrrell, Product Manager for Cushman and E-Z-GO vehicles.
The 72-volt drivetrain in the new Hauler PRO is an upgrade from more traditional 48-volt systems
Sprayer investment earns rewards
Beversbrook Sports and Community Facility introduced a Martin Lishman sprayer to their range of turf care equipment.
Key features of the 250 litre Demount Sprayer include a Honda GX160 4.8HP engine coupled to an AR70 PTO pump; 3-section balanced valve block with pressure regulation, agitation and isolator for each boom section and circuit rinse and eye wash tanks.
Beversbrook Sports Facility upgraded to a 6 metre heavy duty
boom with stainless steel spray lines for durability and a hand lance for basic spot spraying. When the sprayer is not in use, the chassis can easily be lifted out of the Kubota RTV bed and stored away.
The 250 litre Demount Sprayer has given the groundscare team the flexibility they were looking for and the tank size is perfect for their requirements.

and will give up to 50 miles between charges. The patented AC Drive technology also ensures that the Hauler PRO maintains consistent power and performance throughout the day.
Up to 25 per cent more energyefficient than DC technology, AC Drive technology also provides for features such as regenerative braking that recharges the batteries whenever the vehicle’s brakes are applied and speed control to maintain constant speeds up and down steep slopes.
The Hauler PRO is equipped with a standard on-board charger, eliminating the need for a separate bulky charger. An optional 12V outlet is also available.
A standard limited-slip differential provides for improved traction on wet or loose ground, while helping to protect fairways from damage due to wheel slippage.
The Hauler PRO features a maximum load capacity of 454kg and is available as standard with a 269 litre capacity cargo bed. A 422 litre capacity aluminium cargo bed is available as a factory-installed option.
With all the attributes of the Hauler PRO, the Hauler PRO X also features lifted suspension offering increased ground clearance for work on rough terrain.
Heavy-duty vehicles
Built to handle the toughest of tasks, Toro’s Workman HD Series of heavy-duty utility vehicles comprises two-wheel and fourwheel-drive diesel options. The Workman HDX-D model offers the highest total carrying load in the industry together with a towing capacity of up to 1588kg.
The HD Series also features the ibeam shaped DeDion rear axle, and it is this, says Lely’s commercial sales manager, Jeff Anguige, coupled with ideal weight distribution, that contributes to its light tread.
“The innovative automotive technology that isolates the engine, transmission and main frame from all load forces, thereby eliminating potential overstress in these components, ensures the vehicle’s versatility on all types of turf and makes it a suitable option for groundsmen and greenkeepers alike.”
Additional features include an elevating, scissor-lift work
Ice and easy with Wessex
platform with a 273kg lift capacity that can be raised from 0.96m to 2.5m. Both the twowheel and four-wheel-drive options also feature a 70-degree steering angle that gives manoeuvrability of a three-wheel vehicle with four-wheel stability.
In addition to its established range of diesel powered Gators, John Deere also offers a choice of newer petrol-engined XUV models.
Greater acceleration is provided by the four-wheel drive XUV 825i, which has been designed for customers looking for advanced off-road performance, all-day riding comfort and the ability to cope with extreme terrain, says John Deere.
Sold in the company’s traditional green and yellow livery, the 825i is equipped with an 812cc, three-cylinder, liquidcooled, dual OHC petrol engine producing 50hp and a top speed of 67kph, plus a 26.7-litre fuel tank. The engine incorporates electronic fuel injection for easy starting, which together with the new continuously variable transmission (CVT) results in smoother automotive-style performance.
A fully locking four-wheel drive system improves performance on all types of terrain and power steering is standard. The fully independent double wishbone suspension provides 203mm of wheel travel and up to 267mm of ground clearance.
The cargo box is made of a composite material that eliminates rust and dents and reduces noise. Load capacity is 454kg, while towing capacity is 680kg.
The 4x4 XUV 550 and XUV 550 S4 Gators, in green and yellow livery, provide a choice of two or four-passenger machines.
To accommodate up to four people, the XUV 550 S4 model features a stretched chassis that adds a rear bench seat to the two standard front bucket seats. With the flip of a lever, the rear seat can be converted to a cargo rack to provide additional carrying capacity.
The composite cargo box carries up to 181kg and using the standard heavy-duty 51mm rear
receiver hitch, the vehicles can also tow up to 500kg.
A wide range of attachments and options are available for the XUV 550 Gators, including windshields and a poly roof, which can be built into a fully enclosed cab if required. Further options include a front brush guard and rear bumper, additional front lights, a rear screen and a rail system for the cargo box.
Adding an extra axle and pair of wheels to a utility all-terrain vehicle like the JCB Workmax is the most effective way to spread its load over delicate surfaces.
The weight of the vehicle, driver, passenger and anything carried in the cargo deck is then distributed over six generous turf tyres instead of four, ensuring that the Workmax 6x4 treads as lightly as possible, says JCB.
The Workmax 6x4 is powered by a 21hp three-cylinder Perkins engine with a continuously variable transmission, with high and low
ranges for travelling and working, which uses a Kevlar-reinforced belt on the pulleys for durability. Enclosed oil-immersed disc brakes work efficiently and consistently.
All-terrain innovation Polaris has introduced new Ranger side-by-side vehicles, both petrol and diesel, together with new Sportsman ATVs.
The first of the new Rangers for 2015 are the full-size Ranger Diesel 1000 and the six-seater Ranger Diesel 1000 Crew.
Updates include a new threecylinder, Tier 4-compliant Diesel engine and a double alternator output, offering 110 amps to power more accessories.
The new Ranger ETX ‘entry level’ utility vehicle, which replaces the 400, features a 31hp EFI ProStar engine, while the Ranger 570 has a new 44hp ProStar EFI engine. Both models have enhanced styling, ProFit accessory integration with refined cab comfort and increased suspension travel.
Spraying brine has become an increasingly popular and easy method of ice and snow ice control.
The ideal way to spray is using an ATV or UTV mounted sprayer.
The Wessex ATV brine sprayer has a specialist 1 ½ metre boom featuring 3 individual clusters of nozzles for varying applications.
The 55 litre tank will hold enough brine to cover 1250 square metres or 1.5 metres width over a 1 kilometre distance. A key feature over this area is that only a fraction of the amount will be used in caparison to a
conventional solid salt spreader.
With brine pre-treatment, when the frost or the snow comes, the brine is already on the ground and even if the water has evaporated there is still a salt present which will reduce the ice factor.
With the Wessex ATV brine sprayer there is also a hand lance always in readiness for treatment of areas such as narrow paths, steps and doorways.

Using Rotax engines designed to offer more horsepower and torque than units of a similar capacity, higher towing capacities and keen pricing, the company is aiming to get a foothold in a relatively new sector.
Improved power The Can-Am Outlander L is available in two models – the L 450 which has a 427cc Rotax single cylinder engine delivering 38hp and the L 500 with a 499.6cc Rotax V-Twin engine delivering 46hp, both considerably more than their competitors’ models of the same size.
“These engines give more torque which means that the V-Twin in particular is more economical, with lower costs of ownership and higher residual value as they do not have to work as hard,” explains commercial manager Paul Wood.
BRP has used the G2 chassis from its leisure quads with Viscolok automatic engagement of the front differential and the option of power steering to give improved handling to match the extra muscle. To this has been added Torsional Trailing Arm independent rear suspension and double A-arm front suspension, with specific shocks calibration for the task in hand. Ground clearance of 27cm is useful to keep moving on rutted tracks.
A two-range CVT transmission makes for easy driving, with engine braking to assist on a steep descent.
“The higher specification for the suspension also increases grip by
enhancing ground contact,” says Mr Wood.
Front and rear and rack capacity is 163kg combined. The LinQ quick attach accessory system allows a variety of attachments to be fitted, but a 10.9 litre waterresistant rear box is standard.
Towing capacity is 590kg; twoseater version can also be specified with a longer wheelbase – the rear rack space is not compromised and it can be easily switched back to a single seater, says BRP.
A 6x6 version of the Outlander has also been added to the range, featuring on-demand six-wheel drive and with the option of EC road homologation.
The Outlander 1000 6x6 can be supplied with a variety of rear cargo boxes. It is powered by a 82hp Rotax V-Twin engine and offers load capacity of 363kg on the flat bed plus 750kg towing capacity.
The 6x6 has Dynamic power Steering (DPS) for improved manoeuvrability, and offers the extra stability to tackle more extreme terrain.

Ireland’s largest activity centre, Todds Leap, has around 100 acres of different types of terrain, including an off-road track, hill rally circuit and a digger driving area.
Based near Ballygawley in County Tyrone in Northern Ireland, Todds Leap is the brainchild of owner and ex-mechanic Benny O’Hanlon, who built it some 20 years ago. The centre hosts all types of visitors and group events, as well as a variety of vehicle training courses for LANTRA and other organisations.
“We bought the 855D with front and rear cab screens only, as we have a lot of trees to negotiate around the site and we thought doors would get damaged. It was the versatility and mobility of the John Deere Gator in particular that persuaded us to buy it. It really has a go-anywhere mentality, plus having a diesel engine makes it more economical and easier to run for us,” says general manager Niall O’Hanlon. “We mainly use the Gator for sit-in ATV training, boom pesticides courses and for our maintenance team to service and look after the site generally.”

Bobcat UTV has road homologation as standard
Bobcat’s 3400D multi-purpose diesel-powered utility vehicle now comes standard with road homologation (tractor).
Available in deluxe and standard versions, the Bobcat 3400D utility vehicle is designed to meet the needs of both work and recreational applications.
The 3400D utility vehicle offers a comprehensive choice of drive modes and dealer-installed accessories to provide the power, traction and versatility needed on a very wide variety of jobs, to negotiate all types of terrain.
The 3400D utility vehicle is driven by an 18.5 kW Yanmar liquid-cooled diesel engine and has a large 34 litre diesel tank, allowing the vehicle to work all day long.
The 3400D offers a top speed of 48 km/h (in high gear). The low gear and reverse speed is limited to 24 km/h and is intended to provide maximum drive torque.
Turf Mode allows the rear wheels to turn at different speeds in order to lessen the impact on the ground (such as on manicured lawns). The capacity of the composite polymer cargo box is 500 kg, and
since the cargo bed is made from composite materials, it will not rust and resists minor scrapes and scratches.
The cargo bed includes tie-down points, a manual dumping lever with lift assist strut (standard
version) and an easy-to-open, fold-flat tailgate. With a tow rating of 680 kg, the 3400D can easily pull trailers and other equipment.
The Cushman 1600XD lives to conquer any job. There’s no task too big for the 22-hp diesel engine, 1,600-lb payload and massive cargo bed.
And no matter where work needs to be done, you’ll get there thanks to user-selectable 4WD, a locking rear differential and 4-wheel independent suspension. So, whether you’re moving mountains or driving over them, the 1600XD is ready for action.
