Landscape Institute publishes 12 key asks of the new government
the new Government is aware of the contribution it makes to the UK economy and the huge potential for further growth that exists with the right level of investment and support.
The General Election has seen 21 candidates, representing five parties, who took the Fields In Trust’s Parks Protector Pledge during the election campaign returned as Members of Parliament.
with the frequent use of local parks and green spaces is worth £34.2 billion per year to the entire UK adult population. In addition, these spaces are estimated to save the NHS around £111 million per year based solely on a reduction in GP visits.
The Landscape Institute has published its 12 key asks of the new government, covering issues that will be vital for our membership and industry in 2020 and beyond.
Over the next year there are likely to be huge policy shifts that affect both our sector and the nation as a whole. The LI will be working closely with government to ensure that landscape’s voice
is heard, and to argue for people, place, and nature.
The new government must take action on climate change, ensure as smooth a transition as possible as we leave the European Union, deliver critical investment to design, and support our members in delivering quality, healthy, sustainable places for the UK. The 12 points include:
mitigating Brexit risks for landscape business; secure the skills we need; maintain and enhance EU-level environmental protections; champion high quality design; invest in green infrastructure with maintenance; and a joined-up approach to land management.

Fields in Trust launched the Parks Protector Pledge last month alongside the Pledging to Protect manifesto, which set out how candidates could work to champion, protect and support parks and green spaces both nationally and locally if elected.
All candidates were invited to take a six-point pledge, and over 250 candidates in more than 200 constituencies across the UK responded positively.
The Revaluing Parks and Green Spaces research found that the Wellbeing Value associated
The Fields in Trust Green Space Index shows that provision is not equitably distributed, however, with 2.60 million people not living within a ten-minute walk of a park or green space and all of London, the North East, North West and Yorkshire and the Humber falling short of a minimum standard of provision.
All candidates standing in next year’s London Assembly election will be invited to take the pledge, as will those standing in the 2021 elections to the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly which both have devolved responsibility for parks and green spaces.

Playground closures are a public health issue
The Association of Play Industries is ramping up their election activity to ensure that the inactivity crisis facing children is placed at the heart of politics this election and beyond.
API Chair, Mark Hardy says: “The massive decline in public playgrounds is a public health issue. Our Play MustStay campaign highlights that children are not playing outside anymore.
“Unless these playgrounds are reinstated and a commitment made to protect community playgrounds, children will continue to stay indoors on their screens – alone and inactive – at great cost to their physical and mental health.”
The API has now joined forces with the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition (CYPMHC), an organisation comprising leading bodies concerned with children’s mental health.
“The mass closure of playgrounds means that outdoor play is being denied to thousands of children,” he added. “In urban areas playgrounds are the only opportunity children get to play outdoors. There is a national crisis going in our communities as we continue to lose public play spaces at an alarming rate. We are asking for a pledge from the new government to invest in playgrounds before it is too late.”

Welcome to 2020 and to the first issue of our magazine – we are looking forward to a busy and successful 12 months and it looks like the industry as a whole is in a similarly positive mood.
Despite the obvious challenges of last year, we saw evidence that the industry has continued to go from strength to strength and also that it is starting to receive far wider and greater recognition for its positive impact on the UK economy and communities.
With a new Government in place boasting a strong mandate, campaign to secure greater funding and support for the industry as a whole will likely ramp up during 2020.
The year itself will get off to a positive start, with a number of high-profile events taking place during January, including HTA seminars and the Party for Perennial event.
On the groundscare and greenkeeping front we have BTME 2020 in Harrogate. The event is guaranteed to get the year off to a bustling and productive start, especially with a number of companies promising to unveil new products and services. We have a full preview in this month’s issue as part of our popular Professional Groundscare supplement, which also features spotlights on aeration and brushcutters as well as a must-see article on new engine emission legislation from one of the world’s leading manufacturers. There is also a look at artificial turf management, hard and soft landscaping and the urban environment. If you are heading to Harrogate and BTME, the team looks forward to seeing you all there.

The Land Trust’s impact on education revealed
National land management charity the Land Trust has revealed an outstanding contribution towards education in the UK in their newly released annual review.
The Trust launched a five-year educational strategy in 2018, which set out to build relationships with schools, nurseries and local communities in order to educate people in the outdoor environment. In the first year of the new strategy, the Land Trust has welcomed 11,000 children to their parks and green spaces across the country to take part in organised educational activities, such as Forest Schools, tree planting and bug hunts.
Not only does the Land Trust organise educational activities for children, its flagship Green Angels project offered free environmental training to adults on three new sites in 2018-19.
practical countryside management and outdoor survival skills have been extremely popular, with many participants going on to volunteer on site afterwards.
The Land Trust’s sites in Warrington were awarded Educational Site of the Year at the Trust’s annual awards ceremony this year for the huge involvement the local community has in using the green spaces for educational benefits. Several local schools use the spaces for outdoor lessons and some areas are used as a base for Green Angels courses and volunteering sessions, which run throughout the year.
Alan Carter, Director of Portfolio Management at the Land Trust, said: “The transformation we’ve seen in some of the people who use our sites has been incredible.
Children who struggled to stay focussed in a classroom environment have really got stuck in and learnt some valuable
things while outdoors. It’s not just the children though, the adults who take part in Green Angels have really benefited from the courses. Some of them have gone on to work in the environmental sector as a result. Not all of these spaces are big Country Parks or nature reserves, but they really can teach us a lot.”
The Land Trust aims to further increase the amount of educational activities held on sites throughout the next year, with more sessions and courses being held across the country. Green Angels courses have now been rolled out on sites in Chester, South Yorkshire
and Dover and will provide opportunities for local communities to learn about the green spaces.
The Trust has continued to develop its relationships with local schools, mainly with the production of an Education Pack, which is a free resource for those who want to teach children about the local environment. The education pack, which was originally produced for the Trust’s site Davy Down, is adaptable to different landscapes and environments and contains resources for lessons for primary school children.

Results of 2019 SALTEX visitor survey revealed
Findings from the SALTEX 2019 post-show survey have revealed that attendees are continuing to embrace SALTEX.
From 30 to 31 October a recordbreaking 9,104 visitors streamed into the NEC, Birmingham to explore the latest trends and products in groundscare.
The growth in visitor numbers at SALTEX 2019 was supported by a large proportion of first-time attendees. An encouraging 34 per cent visited SALTEX for the first time this year compared to 28 per cent in 2018, 27 per cent in 2017, 26 per cent in 2016 and 23 per cent in 2015.
The busy atmosphere in the exhibition halls was fantastic and a massive 93 per cent of survey respondents rated their overall show experience as being either very good or excellent.
SALTEX visitors came from far and wide as the show continues to attract a growing international audience.
This year’s show saw attendees from 49 overseas markets, topping the previous record of 45 countries which was set at SALTEX 2016.
The post-show survey also confirmed the high calibre of visitors, most of whom came from groundscare contracting companies, local authorities, dealerships, schools and universities, and sports clubs.
The buying power of SALTEX attendees was also high, with 36 per cent of survey respondents confirming that the purchasing responsibility was solely theirs, while 43 per cent contribute to the buying process and 32 per cent have the authority to sign-off on purchases up to £50,000.
Many exhibitors agree that SALTEX 2019 was the most financially beneficial yet and the 40 per cent of survey respondents that said they made purchases on the show floor is perhaps testament to this.
The post-show survey fi ndings also revealed top priorities for attending with 68 per cent saying they visited SALTEX to source new products/services/ suppliers; 66 per cent attended out of general interest; 44 per cent wanted to see the latest industry innovations; 39 per cent attended to network with other like-minded individuals and 35 per cent to witness machinery demonstrations.
Product innovations were a big pull this year, and 87 per cent of attendees rated the mix of products on display as excellent. The show also offered visitors the opportunity to see a number of these products in action through Eco Village demonstrations and this new feature did not disappoint with 78 per cent of survey respondents also rating the Eco Village as excellent.
SALTEX will be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020 and will take place at the NEC, Birmingham on 4 and 5 November.

Etesia UK announce new customised Donky wheel barrow
Etesia UK has announced the launch of the new Donky electric wheelbarrow.
The environmentally friendly Donky electric wheel barrow has quickly become a popular choice for those responsible for landscape management with many green space managers praising the machine for making site work a lot easier - no more relying on the strength of your arms alone for moving heavy loads.
The new Donky will offer its operators even more versatility with the ability to customise the electric wheelbarrow. The classic plastic tub can now be removed and replaced with whatever is required for the task ahead. Users may choose to attach a wooden board for transport or assembly of work equipment, or alternatively they may opt for the all new tin tub which will ensure that it is even more robust.
The Donky is not just comfortable, environmentally friendly and silent, it is also a true tool carrier; with its exclusive MRM tray and accessories, it will help you in a large variety of jobs throughout the year from cleaning, landscaping, snow removal, transportation of liquids and work platforms.
It allows the transport of bulky products (boards, cross member, closing fabric and reel), and provides a working surface at a suitable height. The Donky also features a tray emptying function which is achieved by a central lever, with unlocking and assistance.
With a powerful 1700 W engine, electronic advance management and two driving wheels with an agricultural profile, the Donky has an impressive capacity to move in difficult terrain.
Unlike non-electric motorised wheelbarrows, users can enjoy up to two days of work without any harmful pollutants – in turn helping to protect the environment.
Working and moving in complete silence, and not creating any noise problems for the surrounding area, the Donky electric wheelbarrow can move up to 250 kg or 180 L (400L with the boards) in one trip.
With a tank integrated in the tray and a 1″ valve, it can carry 85 L of water or liquid and a spray hose can be connected to it.
This versatile machine can be used in many areas including building and landscaping sites, breeding farms, transport activities, snow clearing, green space maintenance, vegetable farming and plant nurseries.

STIHL innovative as ever
STIHL is looking forward to extending its presence in the professional groundcare market in 2020, having made significant investment in its STIHL Tirol facility in Kufstein. Jane Carley reports from Austria.
STIHL has announced major product developments including professional blowers, chainsaws and mowers powered by upgraded batteries, a new petrol roller mower and a power tool telemetry device.
Formerly the production centre for the Viking consumer equipment range, STIHL Tirol was the birthplace of the company’s first battery powered mower in 1995, and last year almost doubled in size to 43,000sqm, at the same time becoming one brand under the STIHL name.
With 650 employees on the payroll, STIHL Tirol is an important centre for research and development, sporting 3000sqm of lawn on its roof for testing robotic mowers and a state-ofthe-art acoustic chamber – Opel has the only other one in Austria – which is used for ongoing sound testing for CE/GS certification of production machines as well as during the development phase.
Professional mowers in the STIHL 6/7 series are designed to work for eight hours a day, with petrol versions powered by Kawasaki engines.
“Mulching systems are popular in the Scandinavian countries where output is more important than appearance,” points out PR and Marketing Manager Bernadette Karner-Koessl. “But for the UK and other countries which require a striped finish, we have developed a rear roller mower.” Product specialist Jasmine Ebert explains: “We looked at some competitive mowers with our dealer Winchester Garden Machinery, and decided on a cut-out roller cover which would give grass that had ingressed a chance to get out. The small diameter two-piece roller was preferred over a larger unit, and a smooth surface over ribs. The roller itself and its drive unit are completely sealed for longevity.”
Other features of the new 53cm cut RM 655 RS include a 70-litre grass catcher, an ergonomic deck and rubber shock absorption elements.
STIHL has also introduced its first Professional cordless mower in the RMA 765V, powered by the new AR 3000 L backpack battery or a pair of compact batteries fitted to an adapter. Using a synchronised twin blade design to give a 63cm cut, the blades are driven via a v-belt from a dedicated motor to boost cutting and collecting performance while prolonging battery life; the RM 765V can also mulch.
A polymer deck lining is designed to improve material flow while the deck is fully enclosed to prevent thrown objects. Operation is improved by single point height adjustment plus castoring front wheels for manoeuvrability; as the mower is fully sealed it can be left out in the rain during the working day – good news for UK purchasers.
STIHL cordless mowers have an optimised blade system designed to reduce turbulence under the deck and thus cut energy requirement. Blades are run at 3200-3300rpm to boost grass catching performance, although this can be dialled down to 2800rpm via an ‘eco’ button.
Battery powered hand tools have already proved a popular addition to STIHL’s range, but the latest additions take advantage of new batteries to offer more power and greater run time.
The MSA 220C for example, with its new AP300S compact battery, is the first cordless chainsaw that can be used for felling, while a cordless hand pruner is a clever addition, using the new AS2 battery to drive a quarter inch chain and cut through small branches effortlessly.
Redesigns to the blower range include the BGA 200 which produces a wind speed of 302kph, and simply ‘plugs in’ to the AR 3000 L backpack battery; to ease the use of this powerful tool, it can be docked to the harness for extra support.
STIHL
Due for launch in 2020, STIHL Connected allows operators to keep track of power tool maintenance schedules and plan equipment utilisation via a smartphone app.
A connector is fi tted to the tool and transmits data about its location and run time using Bluetooth. Fleet managers can study the data to get best
use out of their tools and deploy them more efficiently.
“Stihl Connected offers great potential for improved management of machines,” comments Product and Marketing Manager Paul Hicks. “By recording the actual run time of a particular tool, invoices can be more accurate, and managers can compare usage against vibration limits.”

Green-tech helps project achieve BREEAM: Excellent rating
The idea behind the Nexus Building was one of collaboration - setting up a “community of innovators”, as well as becoming home for the University of Leeds new Design and Innovation Centre.
The University of Leeds wanted their landscape strategy to create an exciting vision for the development of the campus – with inspiring, memorable and unique spaces – which complements the built landscape. A key aim of the University is for it to be a sustainable University of which the campus landscape is a core part.
The external landscaping provides a relaxed, aesthetically pleasing setting, featuring breakout areas, a sustainable garden, and a biodiverse rain garden, all which helped towards the project’s “BREEAM: Excellent” rating.
Architectural and building consultancy practice AHR specified a rain garden as part of the development. This acts as a visually appealing, low maintenance and biodiverse friendly, sustainable drainage system.
Green-tree is a part of leading landscape supplier Green-tech. They advised and supplied specially formulated Green-tree Rain Garden Filter Medium, manufactured from PAS100 green organic matter, screened silica sand, and blown clay particles. This growing medium provides the nutrition required for healthy growth, while at the same time, slowing down the flow, and acting as a filter for both rainfall and runoff from hard landscaping.
Working for the landscape management company, Gavin Jones Ltd, Green-tree produced a specialist mix of Green-tree Rain Garden Filter Medium to satisfy the particular demands of a rain garden, and deliver to site within a critical delivery window.
Jordan Webster Green-tech’s Key Account Manager commented: “We have worked with Gavin Jones Ltd on several high-profile projects now and it is always good to see the finished result and to know that we all did our part in greening up our urban landscape.”

Institute of Groundsmanship recommends pay rise for grounds staff
The Institute of Groundsmanship is recommending a 2.5 per cent increase in grounds staff’s national minimum salary bands for 2020.
In addition, says the IOG, the amount paid in recognition of IOG qualifications should increase to £600 per band (a 4.3% increase) to ensure an ongoing focus on training and professional development. The total amount received should be directly linked to the highest qualification level held and equates to £600 for each level attained (eg £2,400 for a Level 4 qualification).
The IOG’s recommendations have been made against a backdrop of “considerable uncertainty in both the economic and political context”, says the IOG which adds: “The election result could have a significant impact on public investment, expenditure, economic growth and inflation, and this has made accurate
predictions for the coming year much harder than usual.”
These salary recommendations follow the publication of the IOG’s 2019 industry-wide survey, Groundsmanship –Sport’s Vital Profession, which highlighted a number of areas of concern in relation to the pay and career structure within the groundscare industry.
Says IOG chief executive Geoff Webb: “Over half of head grounds staff earn more than £25,000 per annum and a fifth earn over £40,000. Feedback during interviews indicated that some head grounds staff are earning considerably more than £40,000. Clearly, the range of salaries is very wide and individuals doing similar jobs, sometimes for similar employers, can be earning significantly different salaries.
“It is not clear if there is a recognised career structure within the sector,
and it is important that there is clear career progression that rewards learning and development, and a review is recommended to explore how this can best be achieved.
“The IOG considers it vital that in certain areas of the industry - such as at elite sports venues with worldwide focus - that there should be further analysis of roles and responsibilities, comparing not only salary levels but also the relative status of the roles within such venues.
“Indeed, in certain situations, it may be argued that there should be no upper wage cap because the demands at individual sites are unique and evidence suggests that wages at UK venues compared to overseas sites differ greatly and, in the UK, are certainly below the earning potential of the head grounds person’s role overseas.”

Introducing the next generation of turf managers Relationships renewed at Glasgow Golf Club
The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association has revealed the 20 ambitious greenkeepers who will participate in the Future Turf Managers Initiative 2020.
Each year Jacobsen, a Textron Specialized Vehicles brand, opens the doors of its headquarters in Ipswich to 20 BIGGA members who have earned a place on the groundbreaking course by demonstrating their commitment to the profession and eagerness to learn.
The course is intense and will push the greenkeepers out of their comfort zone, but in return they will gain access to high quality speakers and
experienced mentors who will provide the candidates with a wide range of knowledge and skills that will prove invaluable as their careers progress.
Sami Strutt, head of member development at BIGGA, said: “Each of these 20 BIGGA members
has demonstrated a commitment to continuing professional development and we’re delighted to welcome them into the ranks of FTMI graduates, who are now embarking upon careers in golf course management.”
BIGGA
Founded as a members club in 1787, Glasgow Golf Club is proud of its heritage as the ninth oldest golf club in the world.
Between them, course managers Brian Dickson at Glasgow Gailes and Stuart Taylor at Killermont have nearly 70 years of experience leading their respective greenkeeping teams. They have recently re-established their working relationship with local John Deere dealer Nairn Brown Ltd of Busby by investing in a John Deere Financial deal for new course maintenance equipment worth more than £1 million in total, spread over five years.
The finance package, a mix of mostly contract hire plus some finance lease, includes John
Deere’s PowerGard Maintenance and Protection Plus service and repair plans, which provide comprehensive, budgeted cover for the full five-year period. A total of 19 John Deere machines plus a Tru-Turf greens roller were initially delivered this summer, with the greater number going into Glasgow Gailes.
These include E-Cut hybrid electric triplex greens mowers plus PrecisionCut walk-behind greens mowers and fairway mowers, tees & surrounds and TerrainCut rotary rough mowers, two ProGator utility vehicles equipped with amenity turf sprayers (one featuring a Rogers covered spray boom), XUV Gators and 4R Series compact tractors.

Boot wipers are a must-have for any field sports club especially here in the UK.
Mark Harrod Ltd have been producing and supplying this club essential since our start in 2004.
During this time not much has changed but our latest Premium and Elite designs have moved boot wipers to the next level.
The new wipers feature an angled ‘wraparound’ brush layout that ensures boots are cleaned on the
sides and not just the bottom. A more ergonomic angled brush makes for an easier clean whilst discouraging users from standing on the brushes.
Players standing on and crushing the brushes is one of the major contributing factors to the wear. These new mud stoppers are manufactured in-house by our dedicated team using materials from the UK.

James Williams, Head Groundsman at the London Stadium, has praised the simplicity and efficiency of the new Hunter I-80 rotary sprinklers which were supplied by KAR UK.
Originally built to host London 2012, the Olympic Stadium, as it was formerly called, is now known as the London Stadium and is home to West Ham United FC – but that’s not all.
The stadium also hosts UK athletics and concerts and has been a venue for the Rugby World Cup, The Race of Champions, Major League Baseball and the RFL Four Nations.
Engineered for sports turf, the I-80 is built with a robust, dirttolerant gear drive that offers the highest torque output of any rotor in the commercial sphere, and extends a radius range from 11.3 to 29.6 meters. The I-80 features a wide range of highly efficient, dual-trajectory, wind-fighting nozzles for highly efficient performance in a range of applications.
It also provides total top serviceability (TTS) via its integrated, surface-mounted snapring for no-dig easy maintenance – something which James is particularly impressed with.
James had eight I-80 rotors installed in the pitch and his system is further complimented by the ACC2 controller which is ideal for delivering advanced water management to meet the demands of large-scale commercial projects and the

Stadium and training grounds benefit from new TYM tractors
After taking on the maintenance of an additional stadium, Southampton Football Club is continuing its 16-year relationship with TYM Tractors and has invested in a new T503 tractor to help with the extra workload.
A new partnership between Southampton Football Club and AFC Totton has seen the Saints’ women’s team play their home games and train at AFC Totton’s Testwood Stadium this year, and as a result Southampton FC’s grounds team has taken on the site’s maintenance.
Andy Gray, Southampton FC’s grounds manager, explains: “Taking over maintenance of the new stadium, alongside our own St Mary’s Stadium and
Staplewood training ground is certainly a challenge, which is why we’ve invested in a new TYM Tractor to help take on the task.”
The new T503 joins three other T503 mid-duty tractors which have recently been replaced likefor-like, and added three new T293 compact utility tractors, says Andy: “Over the past three years we’ve been updating our fleet and most recently added a T503 for the Testwood Stadium, which brings our fleet of TYM tractors up to seven.
“We updated the fleet with a mix of like-for-like upgrades and new additions because we’ve been using TYM Tractors since 2003 and they’ve never let us down. The T503 is easy to use
and as we know from experience, reliable, and the T293 is great because of its compact size –we use it for the smaller daily jobs to reduce the stress on the turf. We’ve definitely seen a big improvement to the grounds because of that.”
With the Staplewood training ground and Testwood Stadium needing maintenance on a neardaily basis, the TYM tractors are in constant use carrying out a variety of jobs.
“We updated the fleet with a mix of like-for-like upgrades and new additions because we’ve been using TYM tractors since 2003 and they’ve never let us down,” he added.

Dennis PRO 34R exceeds standard for rotary mowers
Dylan Thompson, grounds maintenance manager at Colliers Park, believes that the Dennis PRO 34R far exceeds every other rotary mower he has used in the past.
The former Sheffield Wednesday FC assistant head groundsman has been in the top role at Colliers Park for six months now and is already making his mark. With all eyes on the FAW’s brand new development centre, Dylan and his two members of staff are helping to maintain the two natural turf pitches and the synthetic pitch to the standard expected by a national footballing body.
The FAW left no stone unturned in the launch of Colliers Park and Dylan found himself in the fortunate position of receiving an arsenal of brand-new turf maintenance products – two of which were Dennis PRO 34R’s.
“To be honest, the PRO 34R was the machine I wanted most and this was based on my previous experience of using Dennis Mowers,” he said. “I had heard about it on social media and I spoke to other people in the industry – I heard so many good things about it and to not hear anything negative whatsoever was obviously a massive positive.”
The Dennis PRO 34R is a 34” (860mm) rotary mower which has been designed to help groundsmen achieve an aesthetically pleasing appearance and desired playing surface. It is ideal for sports pitches and lawns producing the enviable ‘Dennis Stripes’ while a powerful vacuum flow collects debris quickly and efficiently.
The angle of the cutting deck and twin blades can be easily adjusted using a single ‘click adjuster’ ensuring the mower is suitable for changing conditions and meeting groundsmen’s requirements.
“It’s very impressive – I was expecting it to be good but not this good!” continued Dylan.
“The clean-up is absolutely fantastic no matter if it is wet or dry and it sucks up so much into the grass collection box.
“It is also quick so we are saving time – we are normally going on speed setting 3 which is the perfect speed for us. We have tight turnarounds so the size of these mowers is ideal because you can get so much done in little time.
“We try to use them after every usage but we actually use them during the week as well. It has surprised me as to how good the front brush is. If there is any dew in the morning, then it will take that straight off and it can also pick up any leaves. The finish they leave is really good and you can hardly tell the difference in cut between this and a cylinder mower. The PRO 34R’s are probably our most used machines and I can assure you that this isn’t just your standard rotary mower – it is far better.”

Fueling the future of groundscare with the new generation of engines
With new EU laws on engine exhaust gas emissions being rolled out across Europe, the pressure is
existing machinery in the groundscare sector is conforming to these regulations in a
Kubota UK, explains how it is meeting the challenge.
The spotlight is on all businesses and manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint. Recent media narrative is a constant reminder of the implications of climate change, so we acknowledge there must be a shift towards the adoption of more sustainable solutions across our industry.
There is also widespread awareness of the negative effects that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are having on the world, hence why manufacturers like us must make a conscious effort towards achieving sustainability in a mission to reduce CO2 emissions globally.
Within the groundscare sector, a significant business division at Kubota, we recognise the importance of future-gazing and thinking about what could be in store that impacts our dealers and customers.
This includes the underlying issue of engine exhaust emissions, underpinning the industry’s drive towards cleaner products. It’s important that we not only offer advice on the relatable issues affecting the sector, but products which meet the new regulations and industry demand.
This ultimately enables us to help our customers and dealers in making the right decisions for their business needs, not only now but for the future.
The challenge of complying with emission regulations is an
ongoing concern for companies required to meet increasing demands for cleaner engines.
With this comes the opportunity to adapt to these changing needs, demonstrating forward thinking and ultimately, expanding business and product capabilities.
The Groundcare sector has already made steps towards these demands, yet understandably, new machinery development can take a long time to complete to get to mass production stage.
At Kubota we are experimenting with LPG, gasoline, diesel, battery, GPS and remote-control technology and our L2602 boasts a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Muffler and Exhaust Gas Recirculation system, making the engine not only cleaner and more fuel efficient but Stage IV emission compliant. However, as an industry, much still remains to be done.
Is the future fuel right under our noses?
Battery technology currently has a very long way to go. Within the groundcare industry, groundsmen need to use machinery for long periods of time before they would have the opportunity to recharge them, and by current standards going electric would be cumbersome, to put it mildly.
Not only this, but battery power is also expensive, and it could get even more costly for groundsmen
who don’t have the budget to support this change.
As we continue to see a rise in electric usage, we also anticipate an increased demand for lithium, nickel and aluminum – the raw materials that go into these batteries.
However, if sustainability remains at the forefront of these conversations, the issue with disposal of these materials must also be addressed.
Currently, lithium can’t be recycled and when mining lithium, there can also be huge costs involved. At Kubota, the exploration into electric / battery power is currently an ongoing R&D project.
Following the news earlier this year that China has joined Britain, France, India and Norway in announcing plans to reduce the number of gas and diesel cars in favour of electric vehicles, groundcare engines will likely be subject to similar restrictions in the future.
As such, groundcare machinery will need to adhere to European ‘Stage V” regulations and any future regulations.
How to stay ahead of the competition
As global consciousness related to environmental conservation increases, Kubota has already made steps towards this, with the 2019 win of the European
“Diesel of The Year” award for its new V5009 engine – the first time a Japanese winner has been recognised in the history of the prize.
The V5009 large displacement engine range was developed in response to new, more stringent emissions standards in the United States, EU and Asia specifically.
Every manufacturer will have to comply with these regulations
put in place, however, as we manufacture our own engines and are recognised as world leaders in the field, we are perfectly placed to adapt to the changing needs.
Looking ahead, over the next few years’ manufacturers will be assessed closely on their developments towards a greener future and, although costly, it is paramount brands remain savvy and strike the right balance between innovation and compliance, with affordable costs for the end user.
But, with this comes increased competition and, in a bid, to stay ahead in the market, the rush to innovate technologies will intensify rivalries.
As a business, our drive is to become the number one
power choice for off highway applications globally.
Looking forward to the next few years, the spotlight will undoubtedly be focused on industry emissions.
At Kubota we will be striving to continue adaptations to technology, particularly within engines in order to meet the everchanging regulations.
These developments will take time, and although it is doubtful that we will see many new products imminently, we are concentrating on focusing our attention on the aforementioned innovative technologies, whist maintaining a good balance between reliability, performance and power density within our groundcare machinery.

It combines it’s 1.9m working width with a variable working depth of up to 250mm (10”) and can accept a range of tine options including 12mm and 19mm solid tines, as well as hollow tines for coring. This versatility makes it a popular choice with greenkeepers,
groundsmen and contractors alike looking for a machine suitable for year-round operation.
As standard, the 2519 features user-friendly controls, an easy to adjust heave lever and a new draw rod system. Together with new features, it also comes with new styling and livery.
As well as updates to the aeration portfolio, Charterhouse will also be launching a new tool into their brush range. As an ever-increasing number of chemicals continue to be withdrawn from the market, Course Managers are turning to mechanical forms of maintenance to keep surfaces balanced and reduce contributing factors to disease. Brushing stands the grass plant upright, helping to achieve a cleaner quality of cut and can rid the surface of excess moisture and dew to maintain good airflow through the turf canopy.
ClearWater to continue expansion
ClearWater, the leading British designed and manufactured, washpad water recycling system has become a firmly established brand name in the UK since its introduction in 2003 by Highspeed Group Ltd.
Following steady development and the start of export sales, Acumen Waste Services Ltd acquired the company in the spring of 2017.
Demonstrating a commitment to the development of ClearWater, a separate ClearWater Division was set up led by General Manager Matthew Mears. Sales have since moved forward and, to enable the division to handle the extra business and expand further, ClearWater has recently taken on extra staff.
The new dedicated team now comprises: Matthew Mears - General Manager, Julie Tunningley – Administration, Steve Short – Engineer, Jez Coward and Chris Burton –Field Sales. Reaping the benefits of the large parent company, Acumen Waste Services Ltd., and enhancing customer service, the team are backed up by a contingent of “Cross-Trained” Acumen staff, well versed in ClearWater.
These expansion plans have seen the introduction of new marketing initiatives too with the emphasis on re-branding; an updated logo (sympathetic to Acumen branding), a new and up to date video and fresh advertising / publicity.
Said Matthew Mears: “The logo may have changed but it’s the same class-leading ClearWater system. We wanted to bring the brand up to date and the new contemporary logo exemplifies this. Watch out for it on social media, exhibitions, advertising and our other marketing.”
ClearWater now has the opportunity with these extra resources to expand beyond the traditional, but still important, golf sector and target other markets (not always turf maintenance based).
BTME is the next exhibition for ClearWater and represents quite a landmark as this year is the 25th year at BTME since Highspeed first exhibited. BTME is seen as an important event and Acumen had no hesitation continuing attendance after acquiring Highspeed and ClearWater.
Call and meet the team on the Acumen-ClearWater Stand No. 206 Red South (21st to 23rd January 2020) to see ClearWater showcased and the new video. Talk to them too about Acumen’s waste management services, hazardous waste disposal, spill products and remediation.
Export is high on the agenda too and sales to the USA golf sector, an important but notoriously difficult market to penetrate, are beginning to come to fruition.
Two new machines set to impress from BLEC
BLEC will be returning to BTME in Harrogate with details of two new machines being launched into the landscaping and turfcare range, in early 2020.
With a Redexim touch, the Multivator returns to the renovation stable by popular demand, while a new pedestrian version of the Rotorake will also be introduced.
Visitors can find out all the details from the BLEC team on stand 414 in the Purple Zone.
The Multivator returns good quality material from depths of up to 30cm back into the upper layers of the soil profile. Once the soil has been successfully exchanged, the rear-mounted brush then ensures material is distributed evenly to leave a clean finish in its wake.
A popular machine from the BLEC portfolio in days gone by, the Multivator returns with a working width of 180cm and a 75hp tractor requirement. With a number of new features under the guidance of Redexim design and engineering, the Multivator will become a popular tool for
contractors, local authorities and large-scale landscapers once again.
Also built in direct response to customer demand is the new Rotorake 1000. This new compact, pedestrian variant of the larger, tractor-mounted model is designed specifically for use in smaller areas and those with restricted access. Powered by a BCS two-wheel tractor or similar, the Rotorake 1000 features a 100cm working width and uses a multi-tine rotor to rake down to a maximum depth of 30mm.
PTO driven, its principle is the same as that of the heavy-duty Rotorake – to move and windrow unwanted stones and debris using a contra rotating rotor to leave a clean, level finish.
Along with finding out about the latest additions to the line-up, stopping by the BLEC stand will also give visitors the chance to see some of the most popular products from their pedestrian range - the Cultipack Seeder and Power Box Rake.

TMSystem and INFINICUT to optimise plant health
With changes in pesticide legislation having an everdeepening effect on sports turf quality, Turf Mangers are having to carefully consider the role of mechanical maintenance in delivering a proactive plant health strategy.
The UltraGroomer cassette from the renowned TMSystem collection is specifically designed to provide a healthier turf environment by preventing the accumulation of thatch. Visitors can find out more about this, alongside the award-winning INFINICUT range, on stand Red 253 at BTME 2020.
A thatchy surface that is moisture retentive not only reduces the movement of oxygen and nutrients, it also provides an ideal environment to harbour pathogens.
The UltraGroomer cassette features over 80 tungsten carbide tipped blades, spaced at 5mm apart, to reduce Poa ingress, minimise puffiness and prevent the build-up of organic matter. By improving the plants immediate environment, it becomes more difficult for disease pathogens to take hold.
The UltraGroomer can also be effectively used in conjunction with other cassettes from the TMSystem range, particularly the
SMARTVibe to increase greens speed. During the winter months, when the plant is at its most vulnerable, the SMARTVibe can be employed as an alternative to mowing to reduce plant stress.
Vibratory rolling can smooth the greens surface and quicken play without cutting, eliminating passes of heavy pieces of
equipment which in turn, lowers the risk of compaction.
The TMSystem is available to fit OEM triplex and light fairway machines, as well as being an integral part of the Cub Cadet INFINICUT mower.

John Deere expands fairway mower line-up
John Deere has announced two new additions to the economical 6000A Series fairway mower line-up, which will be previewed at BTME 2020 in Harrogate from January 21-23.
Sharing technologies with the award-winning A Model mower range, the 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid electric fairway mowers feature highperformance electric reel drive, which greatly reduces the number of potential hydraulic leak points to ensure maximum productivity and performance.
In addition to their economical price, these new mowers can be operated at lower engine speeds, which further reduces operating costs by decreasing fuel consumption.
“We’re excited to bring the E-Cut hybrid mowing system to the 6000A Series fairway mowers,” says John Deere’s European turf sales & marketing manager Carlos Aragones. “Powerful and full of premium features at an economical price, the 6080A and 6500A combine our proven E-Cut hybrid electric technology with the popular 6000A Series model design.”
John Deere was first to market with its electric reel drive system in 2005 on the 2500E triplex greens mower, and this was added to the fairway mower range in 2009 with the 7500 and 8000 E-Cut hybrid models.
By removing all hydraulics from the reel circuit, the risk of hydraulic leaks has been reduced by over 90 per cent.
In addition, the hybrid system is powered exclusively by an alternator, which offers consistent performance without additional batteries to maintain.
Equipped with a powerful 24.7hp (18.4kW) diesel engine, the 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid mowers feature a three-wheel smooth tyre configuration on a durable chassis, with premium performance and comfort features for all-day mowing. Width of cut is 80in (2m) on the 6080A and 100in (2.5m) on the 6500A, with 18 and 22in (46 and 56cm) QA5 cutting units respectively.
These new models include the proven eHydro transmission and LoadMatch as standard, which maintains a high quality cut even when working on slopes.
A mowing speed of 8mph (13kph) on both models allows operators to be more productive by covering larger areas in less time.
Another advanced technology feature adopted from the existing A Model range is the innovative, password-protected TechControl display. This gives turf managers and technicians complete control over cut quality and performance by enabling them to input commands such as mowing speed, transport speed and service times, while also capturing onboard service diagnostics.
Cut quality on the new John Deere 6080A and 6500A E-Cut hybrid electric fairway mowers is further enhanced with rearattaching yokes on the cutting units and standard hydraulic

OxyShot successfully shatters compaction
The OxyShot, from Charterhouse Turf Machinery, recently came to the rescue of waterlogged surfaces at Ipswich Town Football Club’s Training Ground.
Despite having a thorough aeration programme in place, Grounds Manager Ben Connell called on the air-injection unit, to treat deep-level compaction and improve drainage.
“In the lead up to the winter period, we had been aerating regularly with solid tines to best prepare ourselves for the wetter conditions” explains Ben, who oversees 13 surfaces at the club’s training facility, together with the stadium pitch.
“When we started to find waterlogging on one of our
academy pitches, I called Peter Knight of Bury Turfcare, who deduced that there was a pan layer roughly 400mm down causing these areas to hold water.
“As the OxyShot can work down to a depth of 500mm, he brought the unit in to shatter the pan layer and since then, this area has been free-draining.”
Using a single 25mm probe, the OxyShot injects air into the soil in four directions, at a pressure of up to 110psi.
Perfect for ‘on the spot’ treatments, the highly manoeuvrable unit can be easily transported for use in a variety of situations – from golf course walkways to goal mouths, tennis baselines and sports pitch touchlines.
Impressed with the results achieved, Ben had the Oxyshot back a few weeks later to carry out further spot treatments on another problem area.
“We worked on an area roughly 10m 2 and the results were fantastic.
“We had some really significant rainfall in the few weeks that followed and while some surrounding areas were very wet, the test patch was free-draining and clear of any puddling.
“Months later and we’re still seeing the benefits of the work, with no compaction to report.”

Successful 12 months for 1st products range
The 1st Products’ UA60 AERAVator has enjoyed a promising 12 months at venues such as Royal Norwich Golf Club.
During the construction of the new course at Royal Norwich there was a lot of compacted soil from tracks made by construction traffic to break down. It was a tough task made easy with the AERA-vator.
The AERA-Vator, a subsurface aerator whose unique osilating vibrating tine system loosens, rather than punches, the soil around and underneath each tine.
Allowing better air and water infiltration and easing soil compaction, the AERA-Vator does the job without leaving cores or plugs behind and means less post-aerification clean up.
The AERA-Vator is able to aerate dry soil to reduce the expense of pre-irrigating too; in fact, the harder the soil, the better the AERA-Vator performs. The AERA-Vator can also be equipped with a unique seeding box, allowing the customer to aerate and seed in one pass, which is an option Royal Norwich chose to save time by reseeding at the same time as breaking down the soil.
There are further benefits too – as the AERA-Vator has been designed with a universal frame system – extra shafts can be added to expand its capabilities. Customers can choose from the Multi-Tine, Multi-Slicer, Multi-Spike and the non-PTO Coring shaft.

Terrain Aeration score croquet points in Shropshire
The market town of Church Stretton lies in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Nicknamed ‘Little Switzerland’ in the late Victorian period for its landscape, the local geology has some of the oldest rocks in England.
Among the many amenities the town has to offer, Church Stretton Town Council provides facilities such as crazy golf, hard tennis courts, a bowling green and croquet pitches.
The two croquet lawns at Sandford Avenue had been placed on a hard surface and over time, becoming so compacted, they developed severe waterlogging problems. Good management proving very difficult, the Council looked around for a solution and after a number of consultations brought in Terrain Aeration.
“We chose to go with Terrain because we needed to open up the ground for better drainage,” says Michael Turner, the Council’s Amenities and Services Officer, “and with the ground being so hard it needed breaking up very much deeper than normal aeration.”
The lawns are available to the croquet club and members of the public and the other reason for improving the facilities was the fact the town team won the West Midlands League and needed the lawns to match their prowess.
Terrain Aeration carried out the work over one and a half days, with their Terralift machine’s JCB hammer slicing through the compaction to allow the hollow probe to reach up to a metre under the lawns. Working on a staggered grid pattern, once the probe reaches the optimum depth, compressed air is released up to a maximum of 20Bar (280psi).
The blast effect fractures the compacted soil to allow drainage and deep aeration, with the grid ensuring each shot interconnects the fissures and fractures. As the probe withdraws, dried seaweed is injected which expands and contracts with the moisture content in the soil to keep the fissures open.
The probe holes are then backfilled with Lytag, an inert product which allows air and water to percolate through but is mower friendly.

Versatile Quadraplay signals improvements at Wolverhampton RUFC
Andrew Brough, head groundsman at Wolverhampton Rugby Union Football Club, claims that the SISIS Quadraplay single pass maintenance system, has helped him in his personal quest to improve the standard of pitches.
One of Andrew’s first tasks as head groundsmen was to sign-up to the RFU’s Groundsmen Connected initiative which is an easy access, two-way communication network between the RFU and rugby union groundsmen.
Members have a direct communication channel on pitch maintenance issues with Twickenham’s head groundsman Keith Kent, and it was Keith’s advice which prompted Andrew to purchase the SISIS Quadraplay.
The SISIS Quadraplay multiple-purpose, single-pass maintenance incorporates a mounted frame for up to four implements such as grooming rakes, spikers, slitters, rollers and brushes.
As part of the package, Andrew also purchased the SISIS Multitiner – a tractor mounted aerator. “I’ll be using the Multitiner to spike the pitches and obviously by doing that we will be able to go into the holes with sand.
“We will then go along the pitches and sweep all that nice sand into the ground and give it a bit more drainage and help to get rid of some of those holes and ditches.”

Under-pressure turf professionals look to Wiedenmann for fast accurate aeration
Wiedenmann UK’s deep Terra Spike aerators with their combination of speed and accuracy give turf professionals an ace card when weather is unpredictable.
Taking advantage of prevailing conditions or pushing the button to “go” is made a lot easier if you can do the job in half the time.
A rugby or football pitch is easily manageable in less than three hours while it is widely possible to aerate all 18 golf course greens in just one day.
Chris Lynch, Grounds Manager at John Lyon School, Harrow-on the-Hill, at Sudbury Fields in North West London, has four full size football pitches, three junior size pitches, four training zones and three cricket squares.
On any given afternoon up to 200 pupils and PE staff from the independent boys’ day school, make full use of the playing facilities.
“With our previous aerator, we could expect to cover all 28 acres, minus the cricket squares, in five to six working days.
“Now with the Terra Spike GXi8 HD, the sports fields with the cricket squares included can be done in less than three days.
At the other end of the country at Banchory GC, Aberdeenshire, Course Manager, Richard Mullen said: “For us aeration needs to be done quickly without compromising standards.
“The GXi8 means we can reduce operator time, reduce fuel and importantly use just one machine.”
The faster machines from Wiedenmann give more windows of opportunity, an extremely important factor for facilities who need pitches to remain playable year round to attract bar revenue or golf courses who have allocated days for competitions and society golf.
Being able to make a quick decision depending on the weather and amount of play makes managing the maintenance that much easier, allowing the flexibility needed to complete this very important task.
UK
The process is completed in one motion with just a single probe. We penetrate the soil beyond the root zone to a depth of one metre and then inject 100psi of high pressured, compressed air into the ground. Whilst the probe is inserted into the ground, a natural underground void is created and then back filled with Terramol to the surface, creating a permanent drainage soakaway.
Promote growth with Plugr
The colder months can have a significant impact on gardens, even the best cared for of lawns can need a helping hand to encourage new growth and revitalise them.
A key way of doing this is through aeration. The days of traditional aerating with a garden fork are gone, particularly for owners of larger lawns.
Plugr aerators from Billy Goat offer a compact solution that can improve drainage and promote new growth with absolute ease. By making holes throughout the turf that allow air circulation through the roots, Plugr products help restore lawns to their perfect green condition.
Ideal for large domestic gardens is the PL1800 reciprocating aerator, which has an 18” working width, along with four tines that puncture the turf and place cores 2.75” deep, aerating at 22,000 square feet per hour. With an easy folding handle it allows for compact use, transportation and storage.
Billy Goat products are exclusively available in the UK through Henton & Chattell dealers nationwide.

Husqvarna has announced the launch of two new powerful battery-powered brushcutters which will raise the bar for performance.
Increased levels of productivity are available for professionals when using the Husqvarna 535iRX or 535iRXT, thanks to the Husqvarna-developed high torque motor, large cutting diameter and effective antivibration system.
A host of new key features make the products a great addition to the collection of any industry professional.
After significant demand from municipalities and professional landscapers for more robust battery solutions with less environmental impact Husqvarna — one of the world’s leading producers of forest, park and garden products — has inspired the launch of Husqvarna 535iRX and 535iRXT- two new brushcutters with increased levels of professional performance.
Designed and developed with commercial tasks in mind, these two innovative brushcutters are built to be robust, powerful and equivalent to petrol products in the 35cc range.
AS Motor brushcutters – for extraordinary mowing tasks
The new Husqvarna 535iRX and 535iRXT brushcutters are part of the 500-series product range and offer Husqvarna’s first anti-vibration system on a battery brushcutter. This feature further reduces strain on the user allowing for smoother operation during extended hours of use.
These products are also equipped with a new user interface, allowing the user a constant view of the battery status to more easily plan their work.
Johan Svennung, product specialist, commented: “We’re
excited to launch these new products as there’s a strong demand from our commercial customers for high-quality, innovative battery solutions. The performance of the Husqvarna 535iRX and 535iRXT is comparable to petrol machines, but with key benefits such as no direct emissions, lower vibrations and lower noise.
“Our high torque motor, extended cutting diameter and robust design mean that we will be able to meet the needs of our professional customers who rely on these products day-to-day.”

Ditch the strimmer, Ventrac is here
We all know how uncomfortable and time-consuming it is using a strimmer on steep banks, but this could be a redundant process thanks to Ventrac.
The Tough Cut deck attachment has been specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush. With the ability to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming.
A large front opening directs material into the deck and rubber baffles help debris from escaping.
Three heavy-duty blades counter rotate to cut and deposit waste evenly without windrowing. The blades are sharp on both sides
so they can be used on right or left-hand spindles, allowing for extended blade life.
Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets.
It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92 mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.
Ventrac is distributed in the UK and Ireland by Price Turfcare, based near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

Etesia UK has announced the launch of the new Attila 98X four-wheel-drive ride-on brushcutter, which was officially unveiled ahead of the 2020 season at IOG SALTEX.
The new Attila 98X has been designed to work in the toughest of conditions. This powerful workhorse effectively deals with clearing vegetation from a wide variety of sites – long grass, weeds, bracken and brambles on woodland paths, orchards, verges and embankments.

EGO has revealed new additions to its 2020 range
New products were revealed on its stand, giving landscapers, facilities managers and groundscare professionals the first sneak peek at what it has to offer going into 2020.
The brand displayed its new 45cm chainsaw, featuring a world’s first auto-tensioning chain, and taking trimming to the next level, the new Rotocut attachment.
Also joining the range in 2020 is the new 10Ah battery, providing even longer runtimes and a bristle brush/ paddle brush attachment head to be used with the industryleading Multi-Tool.
A chainsaw demonstration which featured in a covered demo area at the front of EGO’s stand, attracted passers-by as a member of the EGO team demonstrated how easy and powerful the new 45cm chainsaw is to use, boasting its auto-tensioning chain with an impressive 20m/s chain speed lightweight frame and quiet brushless motor.
Answering a strong demand in the market, EGO’s new Rotocut attachment cuts through grass, weeds and moss on concrete, pathways and verges with ease.
Featuring two counter-rotating blades instead of line, it maximises run-time and most importantly, prevents debris from being thrown at high speed, making it ideal for use in built up areas.
EGO’s state-of-the-art product range offers groundscare volunteers and professionals a solution to issues many of them face every day, such as the importance of using environmental and user-friendly equipment, whilst providing a high-quality result.
Steve Roskell, Marketing Director EMEA at EGO, commented on how the event went: “Interest in EGO continues to grow significantly, firmly establishing us as the cordless specialists.
“It’s encouraging to see so many dealers and users embrace our 56Volt battery technology and move away from the more traditional petrol-powered products and brands.
“This trend will only intensify as health and environmental issues are put front and centre.”.

Pellenc launch latest battery technology
Extra thin, compact and lightweight, the Pellenc ULiB 750 battery revises all ergonomic standards with an unequalled power to weight ratio.
Developed to work with all Pellenc battery tools in the range, the ULiB 750 has a sleek and compact design, weighing less than 4.5kg, making this backpack battery the ideal power source for tree surgeons as well as grounds maintenance professionals.
It has a full LCD display on the front of the battery which allows the operator to see power consumed, cost of fuel saved in terms of petrol, the tools that have been used and a battery life indicator.
The new battery is also IP54 water-proof rated, meaning that the worry some users have of working in the rain with a
battery-powered product is no longer an issue.
It also comes complete with the new battery harness designed around user comfort which allows the battery to be stood upright when taken off of the operator.
Another new feature is that it can be fitted in either direction on to the operator allowing the cable to come out of the top or bottom depending on the type of machine being used.
All Pellenc batteries and tools come complete with a three-year commercial warranty as standard – the first manufacturer to offer this on battery-powered tools.
Pellenc is exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Etesia UK.

GreenMech EVO 165 becomes the pride of the fleet
Taking delivery in June this year, Chipper Hire South West became the very first UK rental company to add a GreenMech EVO 165D woodchipper to their ever-expanding fleet.
With a portfolio that spans tracked, road-tow and pedestrian units, their latest addition has exceeded the expectations, and some, for Owner Col Bachmann. Having spotted a niche in his geographical area, Col added chippers to his plant hire fleet in 2015 before spinning Chipper Hire South West off as a separate entity in late 2016.
“We’ve used GreenMech right from the start” he explains “and now have machines from 4” right through to 8” to satisfy the varied requirements of our client base.”
As an ambassador for the GreenMech product, Col gained an insight into the new EVO range throughout its developmental phase. “It was evident from the start that attention was paid to every detail of the chipper and the end result is a well-engineered machine that really performs.”
“The new, larger infeed configuration sees the EVO
handling high volumes of timber, including conifer, with ease while the more aggressive torque and heavier flywheel offers processing power and throw that outperforms competitor machines in its category.”
“When it comes to the maintenance of the machine, the new centralised greasing points have been another major plus point for Col. “With the tight turnaround we have between hires, the convenience of having all the major grease points in one place saves us so much time – it’s a godsend.”
For Col, the EVO 165D is now the pride of his fleet and sits alongside some further recent additions including an ArbTrak 200, two more 19-28 SAFETrak’s and a CS100.
“Because we run such a large fleet, we are fortunate in that we can turn to GreenMech or their comprehensive dealer network for support. When people are relying on our chippers to deliver on projects and contracts, it’s imperative they are well serviced, and the back-up support we receive is second to none.”

The world’s first chainsaw with Auto Choke
ECHO has launched the world’s first chainsaw with Auto Choke.
The CS-352AC is an all-round rear handle chainsaw, with the patented Auto Choke feature enabling quicker, easier and safer starting.
All that’s needed is one pull, regardless of the engine temperature, and the chainsaw starts first time - without the risk of flooding the engine.
The chainsaw has a 34.0cc professional-grade ECHO twostroke engine which provides powerful cutting with low emissions and low noise levels. The Auto Choke comprises a solenoid valve on the engine’s carburettor to control the amount of fuel depending on the engine temperature, giving optimal performance in all conditions.
The usual steps of pulling and pushing the choke, starting with partial throttle and pulling the throttle trigger are all dispensed with. The chainsaw is started on idle speed, making it altogether simpler for infrequent users who want to operate their chainsaw without
the need to adjust the choke before starting. Combined with ECHO’s ES-Start system you get fast and effortless starting.
The CS-352AC is ideal for pruning and cutting fi rewood. It is built to ECHO’s usual professional standards for optimum performance, durability and ergonomics. Another key feature of this saw is the professional-grade anti-vibration system, which improves user comfort without sacrificing on power.
The inboard clutch enables both easy bar and chain replacement and easy maintenance. Additionally, a large cassettetype air filter, with an aerodynamic air passage, reduces dust discharge entering the airflow into the engine.
The CS-352AC comes with a 90PX (0.043 gauge) chain for smoother and faster cutting.
ECHO power tools come with a five-year domestic warranty or two-year warranty in professional use.
