More than 1,000 playing fields protected New figures show Sport England has protected more than 1,000 playing fields in England between April 2021 and March 2022. Sport England’s role as a statutory consultee on planning applications means work to protect playing fields, which are vital spaces for communities to get active in, is part of its mission to get the nation more active. This continued commitment to protect and enhance playing fields across the country resulted in 1,073 being protected. For the period in question, 95% of all concluded planning applications involving a playing field resulted in the protection or improvement of facilities. As part of planning processes, councils are required to refer cases to Sport England when any proposed development would

Brushcutters Showcase of new models Page 19 affect or lead to the loss of a sports playing field. Sport England objects to all applications unless the developer can prove it will improve or protect community sports provision. The data shows: • 95% (1,073 out of 1,120) of concluded planning applications affecting

playing fields resulted in improved or safeguarded sports provision. Of the 121 applications where we maintained our objection, 74 (61%) were either withdrawn by the applicants or refused planning permission. In 59% of the cases where we originally objected to an application, further

negotiations led to an overall improvement in sports provision. Head of planning, Nick Evans, said: “The figures released today once again highlight Sport England’s firm commitment to protecting and enhancing playing fields across England. “Playing fields are critical for supporting local

communities to take part in sport and physical activity, allowing them to reap the benefits of movement for their physical and mental health. “They continue to play an integral part in our work supporting government to get 3.5 million more people active by 2030.” Sport England Enquiry 1

Turfgrass prices expected to Landscape rise in 2024 Institute appoints Robert Hughes

The Turfgrass Growers Association has noted a concerning trend following a year of unpredictable and extreme weather conditions across the UK in 2023. Members of the association have reported that the changeable weather, combined with other factors, is likely to lead to an increase in turfgrass prices in 2024.

chemical legislation, have led to increased disease vulnerability and impacted turfgrass harvest yields. The Met Office has highlighted the visible effects of climate change globally, including risks to water supplies, localised flooding, altered seasonality, heat stress, and the expanding habitat range of pests – all of which are concerns for the turfgrass industry.

The past year saw a spectrum of climatic challenges, from prolonged summer droughts to heavy rainfall in autumn and winter. These conditions, exacerbated by stringent

Predictions of warmer, wetter winters, hotter, drier summers, and more frequent intense weather events add further pressure to turfgrass cultivation.

Richard Owens, Chair of the TGA, stated, “Our members are finding 2023 to be a particularly challenging year for turfgrass production. This trend is expected to continue, necessitating an industrywide adjustment in turfgrass pricing to offset the increasing costs of production.” In addition to weather challenges, other factors contributing to the anticipated price increase include the rising cost of fertilisers and fuel, supply chain disruptions, and the need for more sustainable growing practices. The TGA is committed to supporting its members through these challenges, advocating for industry needs, and promoting best practices in sustainable turfgrass production.

Children’s activity levels hold firm but significant challenges remain Children and young people’s overall activity levels are stable as the initial recovery from the pandemic was maintained across the 2022-23 academic year. It means 47% of children meeting the Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines of taking part in an average of 60 minutes or more of sport and physical activity a day. The figures, which Sport England has published in the latest Active Lives Children and Young People Survey Report, are in line with the 2018-2019 academic year, the last full year before the pandemic, and higher than in 2017-18 when we launched the survey. Tim Hollingsworth, Chief executive of Sport England, said: “Too many children and young people are missing out on the benefits of living an active life – to their physical health but also mental wellbeing and positive social connection with friends and their community. We can see in the data published today: the more active the young person, the more positive their attitude towards sport and physical activity is likely to be.

“This underlines the need for more action – and greater concerted focus across Government departments, as well as across the sport and physical activity sector, and we welcome the launch of the new Physical Activity Taskforce, which meets next week, as a chance for this action to be debated.” Responding to the findings, Youth Sport Trust Chief Executive Ali Oliver MBE, called for urgent action in response to stagnant physical activity levels among children. “When too many children are struggling with their well-being, we believe this is a matter of national concern, and strategies that focus on physical activity should be at the heart of approaches to tackle this,” they explained.

a day is so important is vital to drive the societal shift we need to see. “But alongside this, I believe raising the importance of physical development in the early years, supporting all schools to be active learning environments and re-imagining Physical Education so its sole purpose is healthy learners and active citizens would represent an informed and powerful response to this latest set of Active Lives Data.” Youth Sport Trust Enquiry 6

However, as part of new planning policies introduced by Dublin City Council (DCC), the scheme would need a blue green roof so it could be granted planning approval. Under DCC’s Green Blue Roof Policy, all new developments with roof areas exceeding 100m2 need a blue green roof, which are recognised with helping reduce the risk of flooding, help mitigate climate

Owned and managed by Carolyn Trimble who has over 20 years of experience in creating native woodland, throughout Northern England and Northern Ireland. Carolyn and her team are proud to have planted over 2 million native trees thus far. IndiWoods woodland consultancy created an amazing woodland planted on the outskirts of Banbridge, Co Down. Nursery solidifies future with rebrand A celebration of wildflowers One of the UK’s largest commercial nurseries, Johnsons of Whixley, established over 100 years ago, has announced a rebranding to Johnsons Nurseries in a move that will secure the brand for generations to come.

Founded in 1921 by war veteran Eric Johnson before being purchased by John Richardson in 1964, the now third-generation family business achieved a record sales turnover of £18.8m in its last financial year and has big plans for growth, with the rebrand defining its intention for moving forward. Graham Richardson, group managing director at Johnsons Nurseries, said: “We have used the generic term ‘Nurserymen’ as part of our branding for years, and it has been an accepted historical collective term that describes the profession and not a deliberate specific reflection on gender within the workforce.

“We are proud of the diversity of our workforce and the contributions that all of our employees make.”

“Our values remain the same as we aim to continue the legacy of professionalism and reputation that Mr Johnson and the Richardson family have built.” Johnsons was awarded the prestigious Plant Healthy accreditation in 2023 for the third year running in recognition of its plant health quality and biosecurity practices. The scheme, which is backed by Defra, aims to improve biosecurity in the UK horticultural sector, focusing on UK ornamental and horticultural businesses and organisations, from nurseries and retail outlets to public gardens. Pioneering start-up enlists public as citizen scientists The UK’s leading biochar start-up, Earthly Biochar, has announced the launch of its government-funded pioneering project to try and save Britain’s ash trees. There are 125 million ash trees in England, Scotland, and Wales, and it is estimated that we could lose up to 80% of these to the disease, ash dieback. First identified officially in the UK in 2012, ash dieback is a highly destructive disease caused by a fungal pathogen, Hymenoscyphus fraxineus. Originating in Asia before spreading to Europe, the fungus has already destroyed more than 80% of young ash trees in Norway. The fungus penetrates the leaves of ash trees, before growing inside the tree, eventually blocking its water

transport systems and causing it to die. Spores of the fungus travel in the wind, meaning the disease spreads easily, making it difficult to limit its impact. Since Earthly Biochar’s launch in 2018, it has been on a mission to tackle the issue of excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the resulting climate change emergency through biochar, a sustainable form of horticultural charcoal. Whilst also known as an effective soil improver, biochar is also a trusted method of carbon capture. In the process of creating biochar, carbon, which otherwise would have been released into the atmosphere as CO2, is captured and stored instead. When applied to soils, biochar can improve soil health, crop yields, and resource efficiency, and as Earthly Biochar discovered in

the summer of 2022, biochar has been overlooked as a potential treatment for ash dieback over the last decade. Earthly’s Founder, Lottie Hawkins (28), explains: ‘In summer last year, we visited a farm in Wales that had two woodlands, both with ash trees, and both suffering from ash dieback. The Devon-based biochar supplier is a research-led organisation responsible for conducting the largest commercial trials of biochar in the UK. And now with the ash dieback research mission, Lottie and her team are keen to engage citizen scientists to embark on a research mission that could potentially save Britain’s ash trees from this killer fungus. BIGGA reveals finalists of its annual awards presented at BTME 2024 The British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association (BIGGA) has revealed the finalists of the annual BIGGA Awards, with greenkeeping teams represented from across the golfing spectrum. Each year BIGGA invites nominations from the golfing industry to recognise the achievements of its greenkeeping members, who play a vital role in the ongoing success of the sport. The BIGGA Awards are divided into three categories, with the winners revealed at the BIGGA Celebration with Jacobsen. The event takes place on the opening evening of the BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition (BTME) in January 2024.

They reward the innovation of BIGGA members who are at the cutting edge of the profession and any BIGGA member within the UK, regardless of their golf facility’s size, age or reputation, can enter. The awards provide golf clubs with an opportunity to showcase their greenkeeping team’s talents and celebrate their achievements.

BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “It has become something of a BIGGA tradition that we sign off the year by revealing the finalists of our annual awards and I couldn’t be prouder of this year’s line-up. The performance of a greenkeeping team can massively impact the fortunes of a golf club and these six finalists all show instances of greenkeepers possessing the

confidence and ability to take the lead and ensure their golf club’s ambitions are fulfilled. “I wish them all the best for the awards and look forward to discovering the winners at the BIGGA Awards on the opening night of BTME 2024.” BIGGA Awards Enquiry 19

Shape future of turf higher education The Sports Turf Trailblazer Group is seeking opinions relating to a proposed new Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager Apprenticeship with the option of including a Sports Turf Foundation Degree. In October 2023, a new Level 3 Advanced Sports Turf Technician Apprenticeship was made available. This new progression route builds on the Level 2 Sports Turf Operatives or Level 2 Greenkeeping and supports those seeking to develop their

supervisory skills, knowledge and behaviours in sports turf. Based on the role and duties of a sports turf manager, IFATE has now recognised that a continued progression route to a higher Level 5 apprenticeship qualification in sports turf may be needed. To understand the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a Level 5 sports turf manager, IFATE has launched a survey to canvas industry opinion. The survey is looking for opinions on whether

it makes sense to utilise an existing Level 5 university sports turf qualification as an educational programme towards achieving a Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager apprenticeship. Specifically, is a Foundation Degree in Sports Turf Management the best approach? The newly developed recommended ‘duties’ of a Level 5 Sports Turf Technical Manager indicated a role that is based on science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The Foundation Degree in Sports

Turf is a longstanding STEMbased higher education sports turf qualification. Therefore, the existence of the foundation degree is potentially readymade to meet this need. Over 200 sports turf professionals have completed the foundation degree since 2013 and just over 50 have progressed further and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. Prestwick GC futureproof their fairways While only launched in the summer of 2023, the new hard fescue J Sustain-Fairway mixture from Johnsons Sports Seed is already making a strong first impression at the birthplace of The Open Championship. Delivering quick germination and coping with the challenges of the undulating links course, Prestwick Golf Club have commended the blend of top-rated cultivars and the role they’ll play in futureproofing their fairways.

J Sustain-Fairway, available from DLF, has been designed to suit golf clubs looking to significantly boost the population of resilient varieties, providing a foundation of quality and strength with an increased tolerance to a broad range of turf stresses. Sown at a rate of 7g/m2 in early September, germination was visible in just over two weeks, with the seedlings then under the stewardship of Dave to thrive and establish.

A hat trick for Toro at ‘Boro

“So far it’s been so good,” said Dave Edmondson, Prestwick’s Head Greenkeeper. “The natural undulations here at Prestwick have often seen certain species struggle, particularly with coverage on the tops of the hillocks, so we’ve sown some additional J Sustain-Fairway here to help and, to date, it’s all working brilliantly.” Johnsons Sports Seed Enquiry 22 Four pitches at Middlesbrough Football Club’s training ground at Rockliffe Park are seeing the results from improved accuracy, full coverage and the powerful control from a new Toro irrigation system. According to Jack Cunningham, senior grounds supervisor, the growing-in process was the best it’s ever been, management and players, including the first team, have nothing but good feedback and the problems caused by having a windy site

have become a thing of the past. The club invested in the Toro Lynx LAC control system, 54 Infinity sprinklers and 74 B Series sprinklers with Turf Cups in phase one of a project which will, in time, see another two pitches follow suit. As expected a highlight of the Infinity sprinklers is that they’re top accessible: “Being able to take the top off, which is easy by the way, change the decoders, alter trajectories, all without having to dig the

heads out and risk damage to the turf is very very good,” Jack explains. “On top of that, it’s possible to turn the sprinkler by hand and not damage the gearing.” Choosing Toro was an easy decision for Jack, fueled by the relationship, back-up and aftercare service he knew he’d get from distributor Reesink Hydro-Scapes. Capillary Wash Box solves flooding problems Dealing with rain events is a normal situation for most courses around the world. But knowing that heavy rain is likely to cause an actual flood on your property is a different matter entirely. That’s the reality facing LJ Robinson, superintendent at Hoover Country Club, south of READER ENQUIRY 25

Birmingham, Alabama. The club installed the Capillary Bunkers liner system, including the revolutionary Capillary Wash Box, which allows greens crews to pressure wash contaminated bunker sand and return it to its original condition. Having bunkers that he knows will drain water, on a site that is a mix of

rock, silt and red clay, is a big gain. But it’s the Wash Box, installed in all the bunkers that have a risk of flooding, that is really crucial. “The Wash Box is a huge deal for us,” he says. “In the past, after a flood, we would skim our bunkers with flat shovels, but

there was always some muck left over. With the Wash Box, we can skim, then connect a hose to the irrigation system and blast out the rest of the contamination. It will make a big difference for us.” Capillary bunkers Enquiry 26

Award-winning club uses a microbial programme from OAS Trench Bowling Club in Telford has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary and to top off this special year, has been judged The Best Kept Green in Shropshire 2023. Greenkeeper David Evans and a team of volunteers have been preparing the green since 2014. “The green is in the best condition it has ever been, I want to thank Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) for their support,” he explained. “In 2018 Symbio was recommended to me by the greenkeepers at Bowring Bowling Club in Wellington, Telford. They were using Symbio products, and the green was in

excellent condition. “I wanted to move away from synthetic fertilisers and pesticides and work with OAS to produce an integrated management plan. I also wanted to try to make cost savings and reduce the use of topdressing.” David had several problem areas that he was looking to improve. “I wanted to reduce thatch, improve drainage, reduce dry patch, promote greater root development, sward density, and reduce, but ideally, prevent moss growth during the winter period. I also wanted to improve the overall presentation and reduce the need to top-dress.”

Relationship with dealer helps strengthen club Continued investment and the hard work of the greenkeeping team has seen the 18-hole pay and play facilities at Risebridge Golf Centre in Romford go from strength to strength – as has the club’s relationship with dealers George Browns Ltd, who have recently installed another batch of maintenance equipment, adding to an already sizeable fleet from brands including Baroness and Kubota. Spearheading the full-time team of four is Head Greenkeeper Doug Mackison, says George Browns Ltd have played a supporting role in operations across the parkland course for the last four years. Kubota’s latest generation of zero-turns The Ze-421 and Ze-481 are the latest additions to Kubota’s range of zero turn mowers, with the electric models not only meeting productivity requirements but also offering a higher level of operator comfort through reduced noise levels and less vibration during operation. The “heart” of the Ze is a 48V / 10kW battery which is located at the rear of the machine, pretty much where an

engine would sit. This battery has the capacity for over 15 000m² of mowing operation. The Ze has a unique feature in that the battery pack can be quickly and easily removed and another fully charged battery fitted. A second battery and fitting trolley is available which will allow the operator to work continuously during the busy grass cutting season.

Recharging of the battery can be done from the charge connector on the Ze or independently away from the machine. A charger which is compatible with both European and UK domestic plugs is provided and a full battery recharge takes approximately 5 hours. The Ze Series is available with 42” or 48” side discharge mower decks. Both deck options can be

fitted with a mulching kit. The deck lifting and lowering is a low effort foot pedal control. Quick-dial deck height setting adjustment ensures cutting height can be set quickly and easily. When the motion drive levers return to neutral the auto parking brake is engaged for safe dismount. Kubota UK

Using fleet management tools for maximum productivity

As landscapers will know, a key part of turf maintenance is machinery maintenance. Timely and effective maintenance helps to keep performance and safety standards high, as well as ensuring machine longevity and productivity. Developments in technology are streamlining the maintenance process by ensuring tasks are completed at exactly the time required. STIHL Connected, STIHL’s fleet management system,

has been developed to make maintenance easy and effective. Smart Connectors can be fitted to a wide range of tools, where they then record the runtime of the machine. Information is sent via Bluetooth to the user’s smart phone, where it is synced with a customisable maintenance schedule, alerting the user when important tasks are required. These cover all key areas such as checking air filters, greasing gearboxes and checking the operation of safety features too.

Dennis ES-510 Power anywhere delivers at college with Makita’s new converter

Ross Spry, Head of Grounds and Gardens at Cheltenham Ladies’ College, claims that his new Dennis ES-510 cylinder mower is supporting the college’s sustainability requirements.

The mower Ross was keen to look at was the Dennis ES-510. The ES-510 is based on the popular Dennis FT510. With a choice of 12 interchangeable cassettes, the ES-510 is capable of scarifying down to -10mm. Ideal for fine turf it has the power to cut 10km on a single charge. The ES-510 features a robust LCD keypad screen on the handlebar console providing the operator with a multitude of information options including speed, clip rate, service checks, lifetime running reports and battery information. Furthermore, traditional FT510 cassettes will also fit their batterypowered alternatives, meaning

that customers will not have to purchase additional cassettes.

The aim with the Dennis E-Series is to help professionals meet sustainability and environmental initiatives, reduce carbon footprint emissions, running costs and noise without any range anxiety. The mowers take just 2 hours for an ultra-fast full battery recharge utilising a 1.5KWh battery and will help turf professionals meet sustainability and carbon neutral goals. The ultra-low HAV’s and noise allows operators to use the machines for a full day in any environment and along with the low maintenance, very low lifetime costs and significant cost savings on fuel are all benefits of the Dennis E-Series range. In a move that further supports professionals with convenient and unrestricted access to power, Makita has announced the launch of its new BAC01 36V Power Converter. This useful solution turns DC power into AC power and is suitable for battery charging or the use of corded tools in outdoor job sites where an AC outlet is not available. Specifically, the new solution converts power from Makita’s 36V battery packs to AC power for a wide range of applications –

The trio of battery powered mowers are the latest step in the club’s environmental strategy and are giving Course Manager Ben Burrill and the team not just quality of cut, but enough runtime to mow all greens and return to the shed with as much as 60% charge remaining. Launched in early 2023, the INFINICUT 22” cutting unit promises even more refinement for turf management, incorporating many of the features synonymous with the

INFINICUT range together with precise cut quality from the dynamically-balanced SMARTCut reel. “We were also able to specify 3mm groomer spacing to manage the lateral growth on our bent greens which other manufacturers would have been unlikely to be able to accommodate.” Ben explains. “The team have been very impressed with the simplicity in functionality, things like the sensor in the floating head which automatically slows the mower down when lifted for easier end of line turning.”

The power converter has been designed to support a variety of requirements, offering multiple outlets that include two AC outlets, two Type-A USB output ports, two Type C USB outlet ports and one DC12V cigar socket. Collectively, users have access to a wide range of options to power multiple items when out on site and it can also be used to recharge Makita’s batteries for use with its cordless power tools or outdoor equipment.

Runtime is application dependent. For example, the PDC1200 will power a 1000W load for about 56 minutes, and the PDC01with 4x BL1860B

batteries will power a 750W load for approximately 20 minutes. Makita UK Enquiry 35

Non-disruptive decompaction with the new Air2G2 336 Around the South East of Scotland, Luxury Lawns are the go-to company for bowling greens, and to keep play going during difficult weather, the company is the first in the UK to receive the new Foley Air2G2 336 in corporate grey, from Campey Turf Care Systems. Luxury Lawns owner Donald Campbell worked closely with Richard Heywood, Area Manager for Campey Turf Care,. “With the way the climate is changing, I knew I needed to be able to react to it, and the Air2G2 is the perfect tool for that,” Donald explains. “It operates with minimal disruption and is doing a lot of good underneath the surface, and that’s what I really like about it.” Consistent use of the Air2G2 is proven to create healthy, firm, and free-draining surfaces. This happens over time because the pressurised air fractures the hardpan layers without disrupting roots while increasing pore space, promoting faster drainage and root development. This respiration forces oxygen in and pushes CO2 and other anaerobic gases out for root zone gas exchange. The optional probe lengths and fully customisable pressure setting to meet virtually any turf condition make it perfect for multi-sport use, and it will be key in the continued growth of Luxury Lawns & Great Greens. With his own machine, Donald anticipates an increased amount of reactive aeration contracts on football pitches during the winter as well as preventative work on a weekly basis.

Apex Tools and the Vogt Geo Injector revolutionise soil decompaction Soil health is critical, however, soil compaction poses a significant challenge for lawns and tree across the country. Apex Tools, in collaboration with the Vogt Geo Injector, has developed an innovative solution to combat soil compaction. The Vogt Geo Injector is a cutting-edge device that utilizes pneumatic pressure to inject precisely measured air and soil improver, mainly enriched biochar, into the compacted soil. This process effectively blasts the soil, creating cracks, crevices and voids. These allow air and moisture to circulate restoring its natural structure and promoting better root development. The collaboration between Apex Tools and the Vogt Geo Injector offers numerous benefits. By addressing soil compaction, this technology enhances soil aeration, allowing roots to access essential nutrients and moisture more effectively. Improved soil structure also facilitates water infiltration, reducing the risk of erosion and water runoff.

Additionally, along the increased porosity of the soil, the introduction of enriched biochar promotes beneficial microbial activity, enhancing overall soil fertility and health. For every 1kg of biochar injected sequesters 1kg of CO2, so a mature oak of 400m2 would sequest 400kgs of CO2. The use of the Vogt Geo Injector aligns perfectly with the principles of sustainable soil. By effectively decompacting soil, customers can optimise their land’s productivity without resorting to excessive tillage or harmful chemical inputs. This technology promotes conservation tillage practices, reducing soil erosion and preserving the soil’s organic matter. Furthermore, the improved soil structure allows for better water retention, minimizing the need for irrigation and conserving water resources. Apex Tools and the Vogt Geo Injector have emerged as gamechangers in the battle against soil compaction. Apex Tools Enquiry 40

DTA delivers robust reliability Tasked with delivering reliability and efficiency for both contracting and self-drive hire, a Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) from GKB Machines has so far ticked every box for Cleveland Land Services in Teesside. Purchased to replace another aerator in the summer of 2021, the robust versatility of the 2.1m DTA has seen it well used on a variety of projects and sports surfaces including football, racecourses and golf course fairways. The DTA 210 combines a 2.1m working width and maximum working depth of up to 40cm (16”) making it an excellent solution for large and/or heavy compacted applications. One of a range of deep tine aerators from GKB, the DTA features hydraulic height adjustment and a range of tine options for

complete versatility – making it a popular choice with contractors. “We’ve been using it on our own contracting work, primarily football pitch maintenance, and when not used internally it’s been on hire with a whole host of turf managers who all find the machine incredibly efficient and simple to operate,” said Andrew Willis, General Manager of the Selfdrive division. “One thing we really noticed was how smooth the DTA runs. There isn’t the typical ‘bouncing’ you get with some brands.” The DTA was the first GKB machine purchased by Cleveland Land Services, more recently joined by an SPM 400 topdresser.” GKB Machines Enquiry 43

Club selects Wiedenmann to mix and match aeration The award-winning Fortrose & Rosemarkie Golf Links, on the Black Isle, near Inverness, is steeped in both history and nature. Last September, Head Greenkeeper George Paterson said goodbye to his 20-year-old Wiedenmann Terra XP6 deep aerator, trading it in for a new GXi8 HD. The deal was struck with John Morton, Regional Sales Manager at Wiedenmann UK’s Scottish dealer, Fairways GM, who sold him a Wiedenmann SL6 Terra Spike six years previously. “This investment is about productivity,” said George,

“We’ve chosen the best tools that let us mix and match our approach to aeration. Speed is now more important than depth because of the shingly nature of our soils.

does a great job on hard-to-reach tees and greens. Mid-October we cone tined greens prior to overseeding and top dressing, so it’s still very much in our plans.

Grass Plant Ltd praises Redexim Verti-Drain After 15 years of reliable service running a fleet of smaller Redexim Verti-Drain models Martin Guy, owner of Grass Plant Ltd, comments that the addition of a high-speed Verti-Drain 2519 has brought new-found efficiency to both internal contracting operations and external hire projects… so much so, that plans are already in the pipeline to add more! Martin leads a team of 25, undertaking construction and ongoing maintenance of all types of natural turf sports surface, working with venues across the Southeast. “Across the board, agronomic expectations are on the rise but due to play demands and climatic conditions, the time available to deliver these standards is getting ever smaller” he explains. “This meant increasing demand was placed our high-speed aerator, but the competitor model we were running was not delivering what we needed it to. As soon as the 2519 was introduced we were straight onto our local Redexim

“Compared to the XP6, the GXi 8 is much quicker. Being 20 cm wider is helpful, but ultimately our focus is to cover large areas very neatly in a shorter amount of time. With a narrower, slower machine, intentions were always to get around as many fairways when we could, but for lots of ceasons we’d get diverted or miss the window. We’ll be far more efficient and get aeration done. “The SL6 is on our John Deere 2720 compact tractor and

Terrain Aeration injects polymer Terrain Aeration has specialised in one-metre deep soil aeration to relieve compaction, panning, and waterlogging nationally for over 30 years. While that takes care of the drainage and aeration when it’s very wet there remains the opposite problem of grass and tree roots not getting enough water in periods of drought. It’s a problem addressed by the same machine, Terrain Aeration’s Terralift system, that aerates the soil at depth by releasing compressed air via its one-metre depth probe. As that fragments the soil to create fissures and cracks to allow drainage and aeration,

the probe can also inject waterstoring polymer. Once in place, the polymer will expand onehundred fold with rainwater or irrigation water which it stores for the turf or tree roots to take up as needed. It’s a one-way system, so the polymer does not take water from the roots. Spreading the polymer on the surface is not practical, as when it rains it turns into a gel, making the area dangerous to walk and play on. Injecting it into the ground using the Terralift machine offers the best, most beneficial, and wholly cost-effective method, says the company. Terrain Aeration is the only operator of the Terralift in the UK and the treatment has proven itself since 1985. Terrain Aeration Enquiry 46

An Osca performance for synthetic surface maintenance

Get set for new synthetic standards with Verti-Top The understanding of the health and environmental issues associated with artificial surfaces, in particular micro-plastics and polymeric infill, is driving the industry towards a different specification of surface – in turn changing the requirements when it comes to maintenance. In response, Redexim have updated a number of machines across their synthetic portfolio, including their popular Verti-Top, to ensure optimal performance on new pile heights and natural infills. Lower pile height and a combination of sand and natural infill such as cork and pine is widely expected to become the industry standard over the next decade. Fields with this natural infill will need more attention than conventional SBR pitches due to their more mobile nature, and increased susceptibility to bacterial and airborne contamination. For maintenance, this means that the conventional approach involving regular brushing will no longer be sufficient to maintain surface performance and player safety.

Cleaning equipment such as the Verti-Top, previously considered a more ‘specialist’ tool, will therefore become a weekly usage item as grounds staff work more intensely to avoid the health risks associated with natural infill. The Redexim Verti-Top utilises a powered rotary brush to sweep the carpet, lift the pile and extract the top 1-15mm of infill, along with any contaminants. The infill is passed over an oscillating sieve to separate any detritus while an integrated vacuum effectively removes smaller particulates such as dust and hair into a washable bag. The cleaned infill is then dropped and brushed back into the surface, leaving a clean, level and aesthetically pleasing finish. Available in a 1.2m or 1.8m working width, the Verti-Top offers a complete cleaning system suitable for all types of synthetic carpet. It is also available in a dedicated Tow Behind format, utilising a 6.5hp engine, thereby increasing versatility and reducing weight by eliminating the requirement of a PTO. Redexim

Synthetic sports surfaces require a good maintenance programme in place from the very beginning. Failure to maintain the surface could lead to issues such as compaction, loss of porosity, inconsistent playing characteristics, damaged fibres and contamination of the infill.

One machine that is being used by many groundstaff is the SISIS Osca tractor mounted powered oscillating brush, which is ideally suited to either a sand or rubber crumb surface. A pair of oscillating brushes allows periodic aggressive brushing to be undertaken to

agitate the upper infill level helping reduce compaction, encourage the fibres to stand upright and reduce the risk of contamination and surface water. It can also be used for regular light brushing, helping to stand the fibres up, move the infill around, creating a level surface

Ureka Global introduces Turfstikk PU500 Ureka, a trusted leader in adhesive solutions, has launched Turfstikk PU500, a versatile adhesive designed to meet the demands of the ever growing artificial grass industry. GreenMech EVO 165P exceeds all expectations It would be fair to say that if the compact power delivered by a GreenMech CS100 impressed

Wild Arborist’s Toby Lawler, then the new 165P from the revolutionary EVO series has absolutely blown him away. Growth for the Cornwall firm demanded a higher-throughput machine and having looked at other brands, Toby could find nothing which compared to the performance and outright aggression of the EVO 165P. The EVO 165P is the smallest and lightest model from the GreenMech EVO range, offering robust build quality and a 6” chipping capacity in a sub750kg package. “What struck me straight away is how clear it is that the requirements of us as arborists are at the heart of its design. It’s got the pull-through

and power from the heavy-duty flywheel but features like the low-level feed tray and wider infeed chute are where you can tell they’ve considered what it is we really need from a machine.” He said: “The EVO 165P is out three to four times a week and will tackle brash and trees of all shapes and sizes, including Monterey Pine which is notoriously sappy and tricky to feed in – not with this chipper. “The fact that it will rip through waste without too much snedding has definitely resulted in time, labour and cost savings, not having to run the machine for extended periods of time.” GreenMech

A local Environment Agency team is reportedly impressed by the reduced cost and comparable performance of Husqvarna’s zero-emission hand-held tools. Working year-round in the London boroughs of Dagenham and Barking, the Environment Agency’s Operations Delivery team operates machinery daily to clear local ditches and rivers to prevent flooding. Like other organisations looking after community green spaces, they traditionally used fossil-fuelled equipment like chainsaws, hedge cutters and brush cutters, but this was at odds with the organisation’s road map for cutting carbon emissions and reaching net zero.

Since 2020, led by Team Leader Leon Palmer, the team has been swapping out their old fossilfuelled hand-held equipment for the more modern, cleaner, greener battery-powered technology, saving money and carbon emissions, and improving their health and wellbeing too. Budgets are tight so the team is replacing tools when they reach the end of their workable life. So far, they have introduced two Husqvarna 520iRX brush cutters, the Husqvarna 520iHE3 hedge cutter and the Husqvarna 536 LiXP chainsaw (recently updated to 535iXP). The team has been pleasantly surprised. They have found that the new battery-operated tools cost less, reduce Hand-Arm

Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), are far quieter to use, and have comparable performance to the old fossil fuel alternatives. They are also finding the new

Wiedenmann Terra Float Air is new arrival at Ardfin Newly appointed Director of Golf at Ardfin, Stewart Duff, has chosen a Wiedenmann Terra Float Air for his first machinery purchase. Stewart. who took up his post at the Isle of Jura estate in October, had been working as a consultant for the estate prior to taking on the Director of Golf role. “Ardfin has predominantly fescue greens,” explained Stewart Duff. “As things mature, it’s not unusual for other grasses to creep in, resulting in a handful of areas appearing a little patchy. Our goal is to add another fine leaf bent grass into the surfaces without disturbance, which will help everything blend better.”

With rates as low as 1g/m², the Air offers class-leading features. The operator inserts the chosen seed into size-appropriate dosing sleeves. Next, the seed bed is determined by selecting from a range of hole-making tools, including stars and coneshaped ones, from just 5 mm in diameter. The tools are inserted into a heavy-duty floating 3-part spike roller which effortlessly follows contours. It loosens and aerates the soil down to 30 mm, creating uniform ‘seed pots. Electricdrive technology is used for all aspects of seed delivery; the seed-dosing sleeves and fan are both electric powered.

Seeds are delivered pneumatically down a series of eight pipes onto deflector plates, which direct the seed into the ‘pots.’ An in-cab computer stores data from previous runs and allows amendment to the application rate at any point. After the seeds are in the ground, a double layer sweeping brush follows on and it, too, has floating properties. A further three-part roller gives an optimal brush and roller combination to incorporate top dressing materials to the ground, before smoothing the surface. Wiedenmann Enquiry 82

Suståne proves the key for consistency A programme based around Suståne 5-2-4+Fe organic slowrelease fertiliser is working wonders at Linköping Golf Club in Sweden – delivering enhanced consistency in plant health and growth for Head Greenkeeper Andreas Bergqvist and his team. Trench Bowling Club has been announced as the winner of the 2023 Best Kept Green in Shropshire, sponsored by Dennis and SISIS. It’s been a good year for Telford based Trench Bowling Club. Not only has 2023 seen the club celebrate its centenary year but they have also been awarded the Best Kept Green in Shropshire.

Trench finished top to pip Whixall, Edgmond and Tilstock by just two points. As well as being the secretary and the bar coordinator, David Evans is the man largely responsible for maintaining the green. He’s been part of the club for nearly 60 years and after retiring in 2013, he decided to take full-time responsibility of the green.

biology, not only are the greens performing better, the additional strength has seen improved resistance to Anthracnose.
