Green space not equally accessible to everyone

Frank Ross, unveil a new commitment by The City of Edinburgh Council which will ensure almost everyone in the city lives no more than a ten-minute walk from a green space which is legally protected for good.

The Green Space Index is Fields in Trust’s annual barometer of publicly accessible local park and green space provision. First launched in 2019, this third release once again highlights the inequities in provision across Britain. Despite their value for health, wellbeing, community and environment, some parts of Britain have access to half the green space as others - Scots enjoy 38.18 sqm of provision per person whilst for residents in London the figure falls to just 19.53 sqm.

of deprivation - precisely the communities who benefit most from green space access.

In taking this commitment The City of Edinburgh Council become the first local authority in Scotland to adopt such a bold vision for their green spaces and follow in the footsteps of Liverpool City Council. Earlier this year a pioneering commitment to protect all Liverpool’s parks - 100 green spaces covering over 1,000 hectares - for good with Fields in Trust was revealed.

Across Britain, 2.78 million people live further than a tenminute walk from their nearest park or green space.

That’s the finding of the latest Green Space Index from Fields in Trust which reveals that, despite their vital role in the nation’s wellbeing during lockdown, our much loved

local parks are not equally accessible to all. The Green Space Index was launched by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at an event at Starbank Park in Edinburgh.

The visit came ahead of COP26, which will be taking place in Glasgow later this year, with

today’s event one of a number of projects with a positive effect on climate change that The Duke and Duchess have visited across Scotland. Urban parks and green spaces boost air quality, support habitats and mitigate the effects of climate change.

The event also saw, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost,

Seven of the nine English regions do not meet a minimum standard of green space provision as measured by the GSI Score, and whilst both Scotland and Wales do meet this minimum standard their scores have both fallen over the last twelve months. Areas with the least provision tend to be those with a higher incidence

Jo Barnett, Fields in Trust Chair of Trustees, said: “Through the pandemic we’ve realised just how valuable parks and green spaces are to our health and wellbeing, yet across the UK only 6% of parks are protected and access to them is not equitable.

“The proven physical and mental health benefits of local parks is unchallenged. These are valuable places; places where we can all move, breathe, run and play. Because once lost, they are lost forever.”

Support the Summer of Play New electric vehicle launched by Etesia

Etesia UK has launched the ET Lander – a new fully electric utility vehicle built specifically for use on roads and all types of paths in both the town and countryside.

Spacious, well-equipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully-fitted twoseater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle.

Fitted with lead acid batteries (72V 220 Ah - producing 15.8Kw), the

The API is joining the #SummerOfPlay campaign to give children the space, time, and freedom to play this summer as the Covid-19 restrictions are eased.

or more than a year, children across the UK have been forced to spend time indoors, inactive and isolated from friends due to Covid-19 restrictions. It is not surprising that we have seen unprecedented increases in children’s mental health problems and loneliness, alongside reduced physical activity.

The campaign is being coordinated by Save the Children, Play England, Play Scotland, Play Wales, PlayBoard NI, playfirstuk and Playing Out. Experts, charities

and leading organisations are urgently calling for play to be central to children’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Free-to-access, public playgrounds are the most common places for children to play, the largest study of play in Britain has found. Children spend more time playing in playgrounds than any other place.

Organisations and individuals can pledge to support a #SummerOfPlay. Play is not simply fun for children, it is vital for their development and physical and mental health.

This month our magazine comes to you by Royal Appointment – well, almost.

It was important to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge supporting the Fields in Trust’s launch of the 2021 Green Space Index.

The Royal couple also heard details of Edinburgh City Council’s further commitment to protect its parks and green spaces by signing an agreement with Fields in Trust.

This level of protection, not just in urban areas but increasingly in green belt and rural parts of the country, is more important than ever as councils face mounting pressure to free up land for development. Royal support for this is, therefore, timely. It also highlights the need for a similar level of support from central Government and local government nationally.

This month we have our Play & Activity supplement and the focus is on support for the Summer of Play campaign to encourage the opening up of play facilities and greater investment in play areas. It is a campaign we support too and also highlights the importance of our parks and green spaces.

As we move towards the summer, preparations are taking place for two new outdoor events – the SAGE exhibition and BIGGA’s Festival of Turf. At the end of May there was an important moment as Etesia UK hosted a press and PR event for the launch of new products.

It was the first such get-together for many in the industry for over 12 months and was very well-organised and a reminder of the importance of such events and product demonstrations.

Hopefully, it will be the first of many others in the weeks and months to come as recovery continues to gather pace.

EVO 165D proves to be a great investment

Almost a year on from taking delivery, Peter Greathead of PWG Tree Surgery is still being surprised by the seemingly ‘unstoppable’ performance of his GreenMech EVO 165D woodchipper.

From the very first demonstration, Peter was impressed by the design and build quality of the EVO 165D – which has proven to be a solid investment for the family-run business.

“We had a demonstration of the petrol EVO 165 initially, and as soon as it turned up, my brothers and I were dumbfounded by the build quality of it,” he explained.

“Everything from the steel bonnet to the paintwork was much heavier-duty than we’d seen on competitor machines,

which gave us the peace of mind we needed to invest.”

The option for a foldable discharge chute meant that Peter ended up going for the EVO 165 diesel model - combining a 165mm chipping capacity with a 25hp Kubota diesel engine.

John Deere to open new apprentice training centre

John Deere and training provider ProVQ have announced plans to open a brand new Apprentice Training Centre this autumn, at a farm site in Upper Saxondale near Bingham in Nottinghamshire.

This will mark the 30th anniversary of the company’s first Ag Tech apprentice intake, who were enrolled at original partner Brooksby Melton College in 1992.

Designed specifically and solely for John Deere dealer apprentices attending the company’s award winning Ag Tech, Turf Tech and Parts Tech training programmes, the first John Deere Apprentice

Training Centre was established at Radcliffe-on-Trent five years ago. These premises have now been outgrown, due to the programmes’ success and increasing dealer demand.

The Ag ,Turf and Parts Tech apprenticeships focus on developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for dealer personnel of the future. Each year group trains at the centre for up to eight weeks a year in four blocks of two weeks. Some of this time is also spent at John Deere’s Langar HQ when working with the largest equipment and the latest technologies.

Etesia unveils the ET Lander electric utility vehicle

Etesia has developed a unique vehicle to meet the future needs of the industry after listening to its customer base of professionals - particularly local authorities and contractors.

Designed and manufactured at the Etesia factory in France, the 100% electric ET Lander brings together over 60 years of expertise in green space maintenance.

Spacious, well-equipped and user-friendly, the ET Lander is built on a robust chassis and has an array of options including a three-way tipper bed with dual control from the fully-fitted twoseater cab or by remote control when outside the vehicle.

Thanks to the power steering, the short turning radius of 4.40 meters and 360° visibility, it goes anywhere.

The ET Lander can transport loads of up to 940kgs and can also tow up to 750kgs. With its all-road tires and powerful transmission, it is a real allterrain vehicle for use in a variety of conditions on slopes and difficult terrain.

Another technical feature aimed at making the life easier for its users is the innovative integrated loading ramps. The loading ramps, which double-up as sidefitting panels to the tipper, easily allow the transport of materials, ride-on mowers and other

grounds maintenance equipment from site-to-site.

The ET Lander also allows the charging of portable batterypowered tools and the use of wired 230v electrical devices such as hedge trimmers.

Complete with a comprehensive two-year warranty, now is the time to be outlandish with the Etesia ET Lander.

GMA 2021 Industry Awards postponed

The GMA has decided to not hold the GMA (previously IOG) Awards again this year as everyone recovers from the grip of the pandemic.

The organisers said it would be unfair to judge teams based on the challenging circumstances over the past year, and the GMA also acknowledged that it takes significant resource to submit applications for teams and individuals.

CEO Geoff Webb said: “We’re certainly keen to celebrate the contribution of all grounds staff, volunteers and businesses – which is why we decided

to launch #GroundsWeek in support of the sector and all the efforts involved.”

The GMA has previously confirmed that the #GroundsWeek campaign will run annually, with the next date confirmed as February 28 to March 6 2022.

“We believe that the awards are an integral part of grounds management and the GMA itself, and are working hard to renew and relaunch ready for 2022 submissions,” added Geoff Webb.

Forest Green Rovers extend partnership with INFINICUT

It is perhaps no surprise that the club described by FIFA as ‘the greenest football club in the world’ would turn to battery power when it comes to their choice of mowers.

However, what did surprise Forest Green Rovers Grounds Manager Nigel Harvey was the enormous improvements in both operation and finish achieved with the club’s duo of 34” INFINICUT FLs compared to their previous petrol-driven units. Along with the two FL 34’s, Nigel has also got a range of TMSystem cassettes as his disposal including the SarelRoller and ThatchMaster, which will be of particular use in preparing the surface for next season.

The club are also looking at add further battery powered equipment to their fleet, with the aim of significantly reducing petrol usage at the stadium.

New Otterbine restores fountain to former glory

Irrigation control made easy with the SRC Grower

At the end of last year Reesink Turfcare introduced a costeffective and uncomplicated irrigation solution to its range from SRC – the Grower 6000 D.

This capable 2-wire controller provides all the control needed for easy but effective irrigation.

and there’s minimal faultfinding equipment needed. The diagnostics assist with faultfinding and reduce the time taken to pinpoint the problem.

After the installation of a new Otterbine, the fountain at the centre of Newquay’s Boating Lake has been restored to its former glory, providing a stunning centrepiece for the whole community to enjoy.

Having served the lake for over a decade, the previous Otterbine Giant Fountain was sent by Newquay Council to Pump Supplies, a leading supplier of electric submersible pumps in the UK, for servicing and repairs.

Steve Impett from Pump Supplies explains: “The previous Otterbine Giant Fountain had been in use for such a long time, and had suffered some damage from vandalism, that while we could have made repairs it was more economical to replace the fountain with a new model, particularly due to the loyalty programme available with Otterbine.”

Showcasing Otterbine’s appreciation for both new and loyal customers, when replacing an existing Otterbine system that’s at least five years old, or replacing other manufacturer equipment with an Otterbine, customers can claim a discount of up to 10 percent of the original purchase price. Combined with Otterbine’s comprehensive fouryear warranty for Giant Fountains, the decision to replace like-forlike with Otterbine was easily justified to Newquay Council.

“The new fountain has now been safely installed,” continues Steve. “We’ve placed lights inside rather than outside to help protect them from vandals and now the lake has a great fountain centrepiece during the day and a beautiful light show after dark. Another massive bonus is the fountain keeps the water in the lake clean, clear and healthy too.”

Rigby Taylor and Rain Bird give Hartpury improved sports turf irrigation

When Hartpury University and Hartpury College decided to upgrade their pitch irrigation, they turned to Rigby Taylor.

The challenge was to upgrade the existing irrigation system for one of several match day and training pitches. The solution has included Rain Bird’s ESP-LXD controller and IQ-Cloud central management system.

Rigby Taylor effectively isolated each pitch rotor on to its own solenoid valve providing the freedom to give parts of the pitch extra water if needed.

Decoder systems have been around for years, but in the face of new working practises they’ve seen a surge in popularity as many are now looking for a costeffective way to upgrade and improve their irrigation system over time without disruption and big hardware changes.

Box-on-the-wall systems have lots of advantages, most of which we’re all aware of – minimal cabling setups and easy system expansion (simply splice into the communication line and add additional decoders) for example. But perhaps what’s most appealing to greenkeepers and golf club managers in 2021 is the control and independence it affords. Cable faults of such a system are easy to diagnose

There’s also the cost to consider. It’s got to be one of the most cost-effective irrigation solutions around. The cabling price for a box-on-the-wall system is much more affordable per metre than traditional systems and the total project costs are lower even after factoring in the decoder costs. The installation of a 2-wire system takes less time, it’s often up to a third less time-consuming than installing a multi-wire system and this also contributes to reducing the total cost.

Available as a web-based management system or a standalone decoder based unit, the SRC Grower has a scheduling capacity of 1-200 stations, and 10 programmes, and can operate up to 15 stations alongside five pumps simultaneously.

Reesink Turfcare Enquiry 18

16

The objectives were to get better overall irrigation coverage across the surface and to help optimise water usage on the site. Whilst the existing pump system was suitable for the pitch installation, the in-ground sprinkler system could be improved. Spacing between the heads was adjusted, pipe diameters were increased and valving arrangements were optimised.

The new ESP-LXD controller, with a network communication cartridge and linked to the IQ-Cloud irrigation central management system, provided a real time, fully automatic irrigation control system that could be managed remotely. Grounds staff know in real time how the system is operating and can access information on flow rates and performance. IQ-Cloud allows the stopping and starting of irrigation programs and an increase or decrease of watering schedules in accordance with predicted weather conditions.

Lithium-powered utility vehicle range from STAR EV set to shine in UK

STAR EV is launching in the UK with a comprehensive range of 28 lithium and sealed batterypowered utility vehicles.

All the small, medium and large capacity electric UTVs for transporting 4–22 people or carrying materials have the following in common: rapid charge, a good mileage per charge, an extensive warranty –up to six years – along with the usual no more emissions and no more pollution stance. It’s no surprise that STAR EV has taken North America by storm.

There’s so much choice within the range, alongside the option to configure vehicles to the exact requirements for the job. The Capella series for example has six different utility box upgrades, two

bed lengths, optional doors and two or four passenger capacity. In all the models, comfort is paramount.

The range is brought to the UK by distributor Reesink e-Vehicles, a new division dedicated solely to electric vehicles for the awardwinning turfcare distributor Reesink Turfcare headquartered at St Neots in Cambridgeshire.

Managing director David Cole says: “Electric powered vehicles and equipment is not a new business for us. Last year we launched the industry-leading all-electric greensmower for golf courses and sports stadiums and the first all-electric compact tractor into the agricultural and landscape sector. We could tell immediately there was a growing customer focus on reducing fuel

consumption with an interest and need for greener, cleaner utility vehicle options.”

Jane Zhang, CEO and owner of STAR EV Corporation, said they are delighted to be partnering with Reesink, under their new EV

division, and added: “STAR looks forward to Reesink delivering to its customer base a fantastic range of ever evolving, and worldrenowned electrical vehicles, growing both our brands.”

Stunning slate setts jointed with vdw 850

This driveway and terraces surrounding this stunning private residence in the Lake District were all designed and laid using Burlington Stone’s ‘Cumbrian Black’, tumbled natural stone setts.

The paving was all jointed and pointed in a single operation using GftK’s vdw 850 paving joint mortar from NCC Streetscape.

The GftK vdw 850 was selected because it is extremely durable and easily able to accommodate frequent traffic over the driveway, including a high percentage of 4X4’s and visiting

delivery vehicles of up to 20 Tonnes, plus it is fully resistant to de-icing salts and freeze-thaw cycling in winter time.

The unique vdw 850 is easily ‘wet-slurry’ applied over predampened paving, where it self-compacts into the joints and then the surfaces are simply rinsed with additional water and any residue brushed-offIt is not necessary to wait for a good weather forecast, or to allow areas to dry out before and after the pointing works, even in the rain.

Green-tech provides landscaping materials for new park

comprising of a new green corridor featuring around 1,000 trees and saplings, uncovering of the culverted Radford Brook, a renaturing of the old boating pond into a new wetland habitat, and an amazing ‘underpark’, featuring hard and soft landscaping, to transform the previously intimidating underpass area.

To celebrate Coventry’s 2021 UK City of Culture status, a new linear park has been proposed to run from Naul’s Mill Park, along the route of Radford Brook, to connect with Belgrade Plaza in the city’s theatre quarter.

The area included a redundant 6.5-acre gas works site and

a vast, grey, dark underpass area traversing underneath the ring road. All in all, it was not considered a pleasant route in or out of the city centre.

Complex Development Projects, in conjunction with Barton Willmore Landscape Architects presented a stunning vision,

The landscape contract work was awarded to idverde, one of the UK’s leading landscape creation and maintenance providers, who have a long-standing working relationship with Green-tech, the UKs largest supplier of landscaping materials. Work on planting the 1,000 plus trees began in March 2021, with Green-tech delivering over 1,000 heavy-duty stakes, along with associated buckle ties for safely securing the semi-mature trees.

To ensure the more mature trees remained stable, 250 tree anchors were supplied to anchor trees up to 20cm girth into the ground, using a mix of both wire and strap systems. To ensure adequate irrigation, the larger trees were supplied with Mona Relief irrigation tubes, which allow the maintenance teams to water the trees quickly and efficiently via an accessible filler pipe.

Any wayward root development within the tree pits will be guided by the installation of Gt RootBarrier RollRib. Made from 100% recycled HDPE, RollRib features specially designed vertical ribs, which stop roots turning in on themselves during growth.

UltraScape premjoint used at multi-million pound home

UltraScape premjoint jointing compound has been used to joint sandstone paving at a multimillion pound private residence in an exclusive residential area in Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield.

UltraScape premjoint is the next generation in decorative, brush-in jointing solutions. Suitable for use with granite, porcelain and other premium quality natural stone, premjoint jointing compound was the obvious choice for completing this luxury refurbishment project.

Traditional jointing materials can often look patchy and discolour easily. UltraScape

premjoint has been formulated using coloured quartz for its excellent shades and colour stability compared with others on the market, which rely on mixing quartz with sand. It’s this difference that really sets premjoint apart from all other brush-in jointing sands.

Using popular natural paving stones as a guide, premjoint is available in 3 attractive colours – Cosmic Black, Natural Cashmere and Storm Grey – the latter of which was used at this prestigious property.

Fine porcelain pointing made easy

The owners had a new pool with top quality porcelain tiles selected for the paved terrace surround and wanted to be sure that the pointing they used was going to be durable in this environment, particularly in that it would not discolour or stain the tiles.

After researching the subject with their paving suppliers they found GftK’s vdw 815+ Paving Joint Mortar from NCC Streetscape, which is undoubtedly the best pointing

to use on such porcelain projects. GftK’s vdw 815+ is quick and easy to install by wet-slurry application, which also means no waiting for dry weather to prepare, grout, cure and go into service.

GftK’s vdw 815+ is none staining (unlike cement based or gun-applied materials), and well-proven to be very durable in this type of environment. NCC Streetscape

The Redexim range of overseeders encapsulate a variety of working widths, hopper capacities and delivery methods – all of which are fully adjustable to suit a variety of different seeds.

The Redexim Speed-Seed range delivers seed into pockets generated by a spiked sarel roller. This creates 990 holes per m2, with the seeds swept in via a rear-mounted brush. The recently re-modelled range features a new variable seed rate calibration system – which makes ratio adjustments simple and accurate, while a new mixing bar

and individual seeding elements ensure good, even distribution and less wastage.

Available in four width options – ranging from 1.1m up to 2.3m – the Speed-Seed is ideal for fine turf and quick delivery across larger areas where drill lines need to be avoided.

For improved seed to soil contact, or in situations where high germination rates are the priority, disc seeders could be considered.

The Overseeder 3D collection features discs spaced at 75mm which create a groove in which to accurately deposit the seed at depths of up to 30mm, before the roller seals the ground to protect the seed from the elements and/ or the beaks of hungry birds.

Thanks to its individually mounted coulters, the Overseeder 3D takes undulating ground easily in its stride, making it a great choice for

golf – with a dedicated 3D 1575 lightweight version further suiting fine turf applications. In addition to the 1.5m working width of the 1575 model, a 1.2m and larger 2.0m width are also available.

Also in the disc seeder category, the Redexim Double Disc series contains three machines, the 1430A, 1830A and 2230A, offering working widths of 1.4m, 1.8m and 2.2m respectively. The concept of the Double Disc range is to deliver seed into the soil via two rows of discs, in slits 3cm apart and to a maximum depth of up to 20mm, to ensure maximum germination.

A massive 230 litre hopper capacity completes the specification. The whole Double Disc range comes complete with 3-point linkage as standard, but a trailed wheel kit is available as an option.

A role for little and large

With a wider range of groundcare tractors on the market, contractors and local authorities have the opportunity upgrade their horsepower to handle more productive implements, but the compact still plays an important role, suggests manufacturers.

“The compact tractor is incredibly important to the groundcare market,” states Steven Haynes, sales manager for TYM . “They’re highly productive with lightweight credentials and wide tyres which makes them the ideal solution for work on sports fields, parks, playing areas, housing estates and commercial surfaces in the urban environment. They’re increasing in popularity with landscapers too.”

“Of course, there will always be a role for heavy-duty, higher horsepower tractors, but generally they seem to be purchased mainly for wide area mowing.”

“Customers appreciate the power they can get in a compact without the potential damage to turf, plus a compact can cover the ground quickly while mowing and deliver a high road speed for transport between sites.

“Having a 40hp engine in a more compact frame, for example, provides a tractor that’s suitable for use all year round, including winter maintenance for jobs such as snow removal and salt spreading and that flexibility really appeals to this sector.”

The most common size of Kioti tractor used by local authorities remains the 25hp compact used for grass cutting and winter maintenance, suggests general manager Patrick Desmond.

“The fact that they are used for winter maintenance means that a cabin is imperative. With the introduction of the new stage V models the Kioti range now includes the new CX2510CH that full fills this role superbly.

A three-cylinder 24.9hp Kioti diesel engine powers the unit, via a two-range twin pedal HST transmission with linked pedal and cruise speed as standard.

“The specification includes front loader joystick and rear hydraulic outlets, and the spacious airconditioned factory cabin is the perfect environment for the operator whatever the weather. The rear heated screen with wiper as standard is also a good feature.”

Patrick says that, without question, there is an increase in demand for larger tractors.

“Our new Kioti DK6020CH that replaces the DK6010CH is proving to be popular. The 60hp Stage V CRDI engine incorporating DPF is a tried and tested engine for Kioti who have been using this type of power unit since 2012. A front loader joystick, two double acting spools and 1717kg lift are standard.”

There is also an increasing demand for the next model up, the RX7330PC, he adds.

“Although it has a larger chassis, this 73hp powershuttle tractor is incredibly manoeuvrable and can work well even in tight areas.

“With a lift at the link arm ends of 3075kg it is easy to see why this unit has become so popular.”

Best known for its agricultural tractors, McCormick also offers the X5 range which suitable for sportsfield or contracting work.

New Deutz AG 3.6 litre engines with power ratings from 99 to 113hp meet the Stage 3B/Tier 4 Interim emissions regulations using a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC).

Transmission options range from a basic Speed Four gearbox with synchro shuttle providing 12 forward and 12 reverse speeds up to an Xtrashift three-stage powershift (high, medium, low) with creeper providing 48

forward and 16 reverse speeds. The four-wheel drive, the differential lock and the PTO, with either two or four speeds, are electro-hydraulically engaged.

The open-centre hydraulic system ensures optimum operation of the rear hitch and of up to five remote valves. Optionally, the X5 can be fitted with a front hitch and PTO system and an M Series front loader.

A four-post cab with ergonomically-positioned controls for maximum ease of operation and a transparent roof hatch providing extra visibility for front loader operations.

The low profile roof allows easier access to low-ceiling sheds. The X5 tractor can be optionally equipped with a satellitebased guidance system and an ISOBUS terminal to maximise productivity and profitability.

Often considered as ‘just’ a bank tractor, the 49-91hp Reform

Metrac range can do much more, says Richard Fairnie, UK Sales Manager for UK agent Simon Richard Ltd.

“The two-axle Metrac tractors are designed as automotive tool carriers for safe work in all areas and the tried and tested robust chassis consists of a front and rear carriage connected by a central joint.”

“A front and rear three-point linkage system means a wide range of attachments can be mounted, such as flail and rotary mower, hedge cutter, road brush, snow blower, snow plough, gritters and many more.”

Four available steering modes, consisting of four wheel steer, front, rear and crab, combined with permanent ground contact of all four wheels through an oscillating front axle, give excellent slope capabilities, while also protecting the soil using planetary final drives and low pressure tyres, suggests Richard.

“Electro-hydraulic

against customers’ needs and wants. TYM is no exception and we see this methodology

following.

Using the four-range hydrostatic drive ensures a smooth start for protection of the turf, plus permanent power transmission for safety on slopes of up to 45deg, making the compact and comfortable Metrac range a versatile, efficient powerhouse for any job.”

Stage V hails innovation Stage V has been somewhat of a reset for manufacturers, suggests TYM’s Steven Haynes. “The introduction of this new engine legislation has provided opportunity to not just simply update the engine but have a good look at product ranges and see how these look

“A good example of this is our subcompact product. The outgoing model had served us well and in general customer feedback was very positive. However, we found that in a few areas we could do better and so we recently launched the new T255 which replaces the TS25 product line and this model now incorporates two new features.

“The first being auto throttle response on the HST transmission. This system links the engine throttle to the HST pedals and allows for a much more intuitive transmission system which reduces operator fatigue and running costs as the throttle automatically goes to idle when the pedal is released.”

“We also found that 99% of our customers were ordering the rear spool valve kit which had been optional for some time and it made sense to incorporate this as a standard feature for 2021. This is in addition to a new design and appearance.

Kubota has seen a number of updates to its compact tractor ranges to comply with Stage V legislation, including the launch of the new L1 and L2 series, with models from 45-55hp and 45-61hp respectively.

“The 40-60hp power band represents the real workhorses of the groundcare industry, so we’ve taken the opportunity presented to update our very popular L1 and L2 series,” explains product and key account manager Phil Catley.

The Kubota diesel engines are equipped with a commonrail injection system, exhaust gas recirculation and a diesel particulate filter to meet the strict EU Stage V emissions standard, and the diesel particulate filter only needs to be cleaned every

6,000 hours. The new L2 series features two engine speed memories as standard, as well as cruise control on HST models and a code-protected anti-theft device.

“As well as the clean running Kubota engines, we offer a wider range of specifications to meet diverse operator needs, from manual and hydrostatic transmissions to a ROPS frame or spacious, well-equipped cab. The front axle with bevel gear and the integrated power steering means that a powerful tractor can still be highly manoeuvrable in tight yards and when working around trees and street furniture,” comments Phil.

“One common feature that our customers tell us they rate highly is generous lift capacity, and the L1 and L2 series offer 1750kg to handle a wide range of implements. There’s also the option of a Kubota loader, allowing operators to tackle all kinds of materials handling jobs.”

Cab models get external mechanical controls for the rear linkage, offering increased convenience for groundcare applications that require frequent hitching and unhitching of implements.

The tractors also retain many of the company’s proven features, Phil points out: “We’re finding that groundcare professionals want to get more and more out of their tractors, and reliability is a key strand of that. It’s something that keeps our customers returning to Kubota time and again.”

With the introduction of the new Stage V engine emission regulations, ISEKI has taken the opportunity to introduce new and updated models, explains product and marketing manager Richard Tyrell.

“The ranges up to 25hp are largely unchanged, the focus has been on the new models from 35hp to 67hp. All of the ISEKI models that have been updated with the

new ISEKI-manufactured Stage V engines benefit from increased horsepower ratings.”

Recently launched TH5420 and TH5370 models are powered by the new ISEKI Stage V engines producing either 40hp or 35hp respectively. Available with either ROPS or air-conditioned cab – very quiet at only 78dB –the new TH5 tractors are compact but powerful capable of lifting 1200kg with the rear three-point linkage and powering implements with the two-speed rear PTO.

The mid-PTO can be used for a mid-mounted mower deck or can be used with the optional front hitch and PTO to drive implements such as a brush or front mounted mower deck. The three-range hydrostatic transmission has memory cruise control as standard plus response control which enables the transmission to be tailored to the task in hand. ISEKI MX C3/C3+ loaders are available for the TH5 tractors increasing their versatility with the cab model having a joystick control and valve outlets as standard.

Two TLE tractors form the premium economy range, with three-cylinder turbo 40hp diesel Stage V engine with a three-range HST transmission and fourcyclinder turbo Stage V 55hp engine with 12x12 mechanical transmission. Power steering, 2WD/4WD, differential lock, a double acting auxiliary valve and a spacious operator’s platform are all standard.

Both the TLE tractors can be specified with ISEKI/MX front loaders. The refreshed TG6 tractors are the same size as the previous range, but all now feature new ISEKI Stage V engines with increased horsepower.

There are three transmission types available depending upon the engine size – the 24x24 IQ dualclutch offering the controllability of a mechanical transmission with the ease of use of a hydrostatic, three-range HST transmission with finger-tip Hi/Lo selection (in effect six ranges) or 12x12 power shuttle transmission.

All TG6 tractor cabs are Category 2 rated with increased output air conditioning and heating plus a heated rear window with wash-wipe.

Massey Ferguson has updated its compact range to comply with Stage V emission legislation introduction and has introduced five new models in the higher horsepower end of the range with which Massey Ferguson look to further penetrate the equestrian, municipality, small farm, horticulture and tourism sectors of the tractor market.

These are designated the 1750M\55M\65M and compliment both the updated and rationalised 1500 and 1700M sub 50hp ranges. As with all Massey Ferguson tractor models the last two numbers of the model designation signify the maximum horsepower of that model.

The new tractors are powered by three- or four-cylinder fuelefficient diesel engines spanning 20-67hp and with options, depending on model, of either 8x8 speed mechanical, 12x12 mechanical or three-speed hydrostatic transmissions.

Auxilary hydraulic and spool valve options include front and rear remote spool valves. Low noise factory fit cabs are available on the larger models and ROPS on non-cab models.

A wide range of cutting decks are available on models up to the 1740M with power take-off options and speeds to suit all needs. Fully opening bonnets and well-placed level indicators offer ease of daily checks.

New Holland’s Stage V Boomer range has been extended from the 52hp Boomer 50 model to include the new flagship 57hp Boomer 55 model. Stage V, Class 2 sized models the Boomer 35 and Boomer 40 are now available with a factory fitted cab as an alternative to the ROPS frame.

The cab features Heating and Air-Conditioning, speakers, wiring and external antenna for a radio, side and rear opening windows for natural ventilation,

UNBEATABLE QUALITY. UNRIVALLED VERSATILITY.

Ideal for large areas where lightweight machinery is required to minimise turf damage but high horse power and exceptional lift capacity for its size cannot be compromised, the TH Range of ISEKI compact tractors is equipped with a Stage V compliant powerful 35hp or 40hp 3-cylinder turbo diesel engine and 3-speed hydrostatic transmission for ease of use whilst manoeuvring. With a 1200kg lift capacity at the ball end the TH range can operate a wide range of implements with ease. The 2 speed rear PTO with 2 mode engagement and auto stop function plus mid PTO to suit a variety of implements. For the ultimate comfort Optional an air conditioned cab is available as an option. roof mounted work-lights and a cloth covered wide seat with greater travel/adjustment.

Auto PTO function is now standard on Class 2 and 3 models. This helps protect the universal joints in the implement’s PTO shaft, by disengaging the PTO drive when the rear linkage of the tractor is raised (while turning for example), then reengaging the drive to the PTO as the implement is lowered back in to work.

Vehicle speed is now show in the new LCD dashboard and there is a wider offering of tyres, particularly for fine turf applications. EZSpeed is available on the class 1 to 3 Boomers that have a hydrostatic transmission. When it is switched on, both the engine revs and the hydrostat speed increase as the hydrostat pedal is depressed, without having to manually adjust the engine throttle.

EZ-Speed also can be easily switched off, for those occasions when engine revs and forward speed need to be set independently of one another.

John Deere’s 2R and 3R series compact tractors above 25hp are now powered by a new Yanmar 1.6-litre, three-cylinder TNV Series diesel engine with a high torque reserve, providing plenty of power under heavy loads.

This uses the latest engine technologies to improve fuel economy, control and accuracy, while also reducing environmental impact as well as operating costs. It features a common rail system (CRS) and an electronic control unit (ECU), which continuously monitors engine conditions and adjusts fuel delivery to ensure optimum performance.

The engine’s new after-treatment system consists of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), similar to that used on the company’s agricultural tractors.

This operates automatically to produce lower levels of exhaust emissions and reduced noise levels, and meets all current requirements for Stage V emission standards.

At the top of the John Deere compact tractor range, the latest 51hp 4052M and 4052R models are powered by a 2.1-litre, fourcylinder engine with DPF, a unit also used on the 65hp 4066M and 4066R models.

In addition to the Stage V engine, the 3R and 4R Series compact tractors are equipped with a new eThrottle function integrated into the established eHydro transmission. This feature is designed make the tractor quieter and more comfortable to use, as well as more fuel efficient. With the simple push of a button, engine speed is conveniently linked to the foot pedal position so that engine rpm and tractor speed can both be increased as the pedal is depressed.

The latest 4R Series models can also now be equipped with a StarFire satellite receiver and AutoTrac Universal automatic steering system. This is designed to help operators achieve higher levels of accuracy and input cost savings when working with implements such as sprayers, seeders and spreaders.

On selected models, the Hitch Assist system makes coupling up implements and trailers to the tractor’s rear hitch or three-point linkage quicker, easier and safer.

Using this system, external switches mounted on the rear fender allow the operator to move the tractor backwards and forwards at a maximum speed of 12mm/sec and raise or lower the hitch as required.

“It’s early days and we’re still working out which implements will be best paired with the L2-622, but we’ve converted a blower to pto drive to work with it, and I can see it being a good combination with Trimax Snake mower for the roughs and the Turf Tidy, which is used

A number of improvements can be seen with this latest generation of Kubota tractor, Mr Elderfield comments.

“The cab is more spacious and comfortable and the controls are really well laid out. We’ve opted for hydrostatic transmission, as it’s so easy to use and we want any member of our team to be able to drive the tractors.”

“We used the L3600 for a lot of trailer work,” explains Course Manager Richard Elderfield, who has been at Sandy Lodge for 30 years, “We also have three smaller Kubota ST tractors which perform a wide range of turfcare and renovation tasks.”

“They work very well, but I needed a more powerful tractor, which led me to the new Kubota L2 series.”

Wiedenmann offers versatility and productivity across all codes

With Councils, contractors and clubs operating with unprecedented restrictions recently, Wiedenmann UK reports that machines that perform a variety of tasks have come to the fore.

“For multiple reasons, many grounds teams have been under strength,” said Chas Ayres, Wiedenmann UK’s Sales Manager. “Productivity has been key for those specifying and purchasing. There is a definite trend to go with machines that offer assorted duties, specifically in the sweepers, collector, blowers’ sector.”

“Our two blowers – the Mega Twister and the Whisper Twisteroffer 230° and 180° degrees of swivel. The blower spout with the flick of a switch in the cab, changes direction effortlessly, from one side to another, without need to turn. Fewer back and forward journeys are required, saving both labour and fuel costs.”

Chris Lynch, Head Groundsman at The John Lyons School Harrow confirmed his increasing reliance on his blower to speed up work rate and driver comfort. “From a Health & Safety standpoint, the Whisper Twister and its capacity to swivel 180° means the machine works for us and not the other way around. Take our longest tree stretch at over 400m.

Our previous blower in a fixed position meant that the operator often had to twist their body to see where they were going but with the hydraulic swivel feature of the Whisper Twister, this means the driver can operate the machine in a natural position most of the time. The blower is also excellent for working into those hard to reach areas we used to have to do by hand.”

Wiedenmann’s stand out sweeper collector, the Super 500, which scarifies, collects leaves and flail mows has a 2.1 m high dump feature and a vast 2500 litre tank.

“Being able to empty into a trailer saves on time consuming journeys back to base,” said Chas Ayres. “The Super 500 has infinite adjustment so can literally tip into any height up to 2.1 m. It also comes with class leading safety features making it safe on undulations.”

Head greenkeeper, John Watson at the parkland course of Downside GC, Dundee, speaks highly of his Super 500.

“Primarily, ours was for leaves and then, rough management. It picked huge amounts of leaves right away, and then a few storms meant we virtually had to start again. Leaves are vacuum packed nice and tightly. We high dump them into one of our 5 tonne trailers. We’ve taken photos of what it does and quite honestly, it’s so good, people think we’ve used Photoshop.”

Leaf collection was once a threeman job but is now a one-man job according to Mark Jaques, deputy head greenkeeper at Gillingham Golf Club – thanks to the SISIS Litamina 1200.

“Due to the sheer number of trees, we have to constantly keep on top of the fallen leaves - hence the reason we bought the Litamina 1200,” said Mark. “With reduced manpower we had to work hard and make sure it was perfect. Every member of staff, every single piece of equipment and every single product needed to be at its absolute best.

“I

arranged, and he purchased it on the spot.

Before the SISIS Litamina, Mark and the team used a tractor mounted leaf blower, in which they would blow the fallen leaves from one end of the course to another.

Mark claims that he knew the Litamina was the machine he needed straight away because he used one in a previous greenkeeping role. A demonstration was quickly

Top-Brush becomes Newark’s weapon in the fight against worm casts

The reduction in availability of curative chemistry has been a game-changer when it comes to the fight against worm casts.

Recognising that cultural methods are going to become perhaps the only way to manage them, Newark Golf Club are the latest in a growing list to add the 6m-wide Redexim Top-Brush to their armoury.

For Course Manager Alex Clarricoates, its effectiveness at removing casts, as well as improving course presentation, made the purchase a no-brainer.

“Having gone through the autumn and winter struggling with casts on our fairways and

surrounds, as soon as I saw the Top-Brush on social media I requested a demonstration” explains Alex, who has been at Newark for 12 years.

“As well as the obvious issues with playability, from an agronomic perspective, the increase in casts means that they often get trodden on and lay like that throughout the winter, resulting in us entering into the new season with bare patches.”

The large working with of the Top-Brush means it can quickly and effectively rid large areas of not only worm casts, but also organic matter and dew. Its three brushes can rotate in or against the direction of travel and its

working depth can be adjusted to achieve a light surface brush or more aggressive, deeper surface agitation.

“This versatility means that throughout the spring and summer we’ll be using the TopBrush for clearing dew and removing lateral growth, and during periods of drought it will be a key tool to deliver that extra little bit of surface presentation on the fairways without needing to cut.

“Come the autumn, we envisage the Top-Brush will be in use daily to clear any worm casts when they appear.”

“There is growing pressure to remove weeds from the public realm without using chemicals, as they can pose of health risk to people, flora and fauna,” says Philip Bryant of Bema Sweepers UK.

Pellenc launches first batterypowered backpack blower

Pellenc, the world’s leading expert in battery-powered tools for maintaining landscapes, has continued to develop its product range with the launch of their first battery-powered backpack blower to the UK market.

The Airion Backpack blower is the most powerful batterypowered backpack blower on the market. With an airflow of 1,280m³/h and a thrust of 24N, its performance is suitable for day-to-day road green space maintenance work in all seasons.

With its wide, thick shoulder straps and integrated adjustable belt, the Airion Backpack blower offers great comfort during prolonged working sessions.

Its inclined pivot gives full freedom of movement with the nozzle, allowing manoeuvrability reminiscent of a hand-held blower. Its handle can also be adjusted to the user’s height with all controls are always within easy reach.

The large backlit display on the smart handle provides the user with real-time information including current speed, battery life (as a percentage and in minutes), option currently selected (boost and cruise control) and time worked on the current work site.

The Airion Backpack’s design optimises its aerodynamic efficiency by 15% compared to competing tools and its battery life has been extended up to three hours – depending on the battery used.

As with other tools in the Pellenc range, the Airion Backpack blower comes with IP54 waterproof rating and can be fitted with three different nozzles depending on usage – angled, angled-flat or flat.

Pellenc UK recently announced the launch of an industry leading fouryear commercial warranty for all batteries and three-year warranty for all tools.Pellenc products are exclusively distributed in the UK by Etesia UK.

MISSOUT!

Gold standard for the white cliffs

With a patch that covers 123 square miles, it’s no surprise that Dover District Council opted for Reesink Turfcare’s ReeAssure maintenance scheme for ultimate peace of mind.

Dave Terry, supervisor at Dover District Council, simply couldn’t afford to have his Toro fleet out of action – especially since each mower was required to be in operation for 25-30 hours each week.

Having Gold cover meant that Dave could expect routine maintenance and servicing along with unlimited call outs for vehicle breakdowns or repairs.

Dave explains: “When you’re working with machinery it’s inevitable that from time to time you’ll experience glitches or need to make repairs – it happens. Yet whenever I need assistance, I know I’ll have a Reesink representative on the doorstep the next day.

“We probably rely on them a couple of times each month and the security of having dependable, high-quality support more than pays for itself.

“If you don’t opt for cover then you could be subjected to hundreds of pounds of maintenance on a totally adhoc basis and we can’t take that risk or threaten having machines out of action for long periods of time.”

This is why the Reesink maintenance plan is so integral to large grounds teams or estate management organisations, as Peter Clarke, service manager at Reesink’s Sheffield Park branch, explains: “A monthly fixed-cost means there’s no hidden extras and with three packages to choose from – gold, silver and bronze - there is something to suit all budgets.”

Reesink take care of everything from winter servicing, replacement parts or general upkeep. Knowing that components such as labour and parts to consumables and disposal fees are all covered within the cost of the Gold package provides straightforward cost managing and budget control.

Club marks every line with the Turf Tank One

Since their Turf Tank One arrived at the Nigel Doughty Academy, Nottingham Forest Football Club has marked every pitch and grid they have with the GPS line marking robot.

Adding the Turf Tank One to their team initially relieved

pressure during a busy time, but the benefits of saving time, being able to work while the robot marks and the accuracy of the lines have all been vital during another packed season.

Using the Turf Tank tablet, custom grids are regularly

overmarked within pitches, as well as custom goalkeeping areas and other pitch markings. This is just another reason why the robot has worked so well at Forest, but for Ewan, it’s the accuracy that really impresses.
