Mitsubishi Electric launches low-carbon heat pump for multi-residential sector
Hatfield, UK - December 1st, 2021 – Mitsubishi Electric has launched Ecodan Hydrodana new, highly efficient, waterto-water heat pump for the multi-residential market.
The packaged ‘plug & play’ solution is specifically designed to provide heating and hot water in residential apartments, and to capitalise on the significant sustainable energy efficiency that the next generation of heat networks offer. It also operates with a low quantity of low-GWP R32 refrigerant, to help keep environmental impact to a minimum.
“There are already renewable heating solutions for single homes, but this is one of the first truly low-carbon options available for multi-residential apartments”, said Alex Bagnell, Product Manager for Hydronics at Mitsubishi Electric.
“The next decade will see us continue to decarbonise home heating, in order to reach the net-zero target and low-carbon technology will play a pivotal role here. Ecodan Hydrodan, and particularly the use of water-to-water heating, is well placed to support this”.
The built environment contributes 30% of all carbon emitted in the UK with heating residential homes accounting for 17% alone.
Ecodan Hydrodan units can be installed in individual apartments to deliver domestic hot water using an integrated storage tank, and low temperature hot water for heating. The units connect to a 5th generation ambient temperature heat network deployed throughout the building, to deliver renewable heating and hot water. 5th generation networks utilise ultra-low temperature, typically between 10-30°C, the use of such a low temperature means that multiple water source heat pumps can be used on the network. The heat pumps can use the network as a heat source or heat sink depending on the demand for heating or cooling. This means that the network can be used as an energy store to share rejected energy from cooling plant with the heat injection needs of heating plant.
Ecodan Hydrodan upgrades heat energy from the water loop for use in each apartment. Each packaged unit offers a capacity range of between 1.1kW and 7.5kW with flow temperatures of up to 60°C. The 170-litre integrated tank includes variable PIC (Pressure Independent Control) Valve loop control, which allows the flow into the unit to change independently of the pressure in the system.
All connections for the heat network, mains cold water, DHW and LTHW circuit are fitted at the top of the unit for simple installation. Ecodan Hydrodan is also compatible with UFH, radiators, fan coils and fan assisted radiators, and offers both single and twin zone control.
The unit incorporates an easily removed heat pump module containing the compressor, refrigerant to water heat exchanger, loop to refrigerant plate heat exchanger and water circulating pump.
The heat pump module makes maintenance and even repair simple, and operates at ultra-low noise output, meaning there is no disturbance for occupants in apartment buildings. Its highly efficient heating and hot water production and advanced, internet-based controls can help keep running costs down for owners.
“The move to low temperature heat networks using the water-to-water model helps to significantly improve the current heat network technologies, by reducing the distribution losses and contribution to apartment overheating,” added Bagnall.
“Ecodan Hydrodan technology also leads the way towards larger community and network heating schemes, where energy can be sourced and shared from other HVAC technologies”.

Welcome
Manufacturers see positive outlook for 2022
Britain’s manufacturers are more positive about the growth outlook as they enter 2022, with greater confidence in the prospects for their own companies than either the global or UK economies, according to a major survey published by Make UK and PwC.
The 2022 Make UK/PwC Senior Executive survey shows the scale of uncertainty facing business in the current turbulent global environment, with more than half of companies saying the biggest challenges facing them had changed in the last twelve months.
Their optimism is also tempered by escalating inflationary pressures and access to, as well as retaining, talent and key skills which are by far the biggest issues companies are having to address.
In the face of these challenges, however, the majority of manufacturers have weathered the storm of the last couple of years with almost three quarters of companies (73%) now believing conditions for the sector will improve in 2022, with a similar number (73%) believing the opportunities for their business outweigh the risks. To date, the sector appears to
have seen little or no disruption from the latest Omicron variant to alter this confidence.
Make UK Chief Executive, Stephen Phipson, said: “It’s testament to the strength of manufacturers that they have emerged from the turbulence of the last couple of years in such a relatively strong position. While clouds remain on the horizon in the form of rapidly escalating costs and access to key skills, the outlook is more positive for those that remain adaptable, agile and innovative.
“To build on this we now need to see a Government fully committed to supporting the sector at home and overseas. This requires more than a Plan for Growth but a broader industrial strategy that sets out a long term vision for the economy and how we are going to achieve consistent economic growth across the whole country.”

Aurubis
Rewarding Nordic Copper
The Windermere Jetty Museum – recently shortlisted for the 2021 RIBA Stirling Prize – is unified and defined by facades and oversailing roofs clad in Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper from Aurubis. Nordic Brown pre-oxidised copper is used as the determining material to give architectural consistency to these elements and to the museum buildings working together as a cohesive whole. The copper is folded and pinned with a regular pattern of brass fixings to give the elevations a unique texture, which is further reinforced by the patina developing naturally over time and responding to the unique lakeside context. Nordic Brown provides the same oxidised surface that otherwise develops over time in the environment, with darker or lighter (Nordic Brown Light) shades of brown.

Hunter Douglas Architectural
The metal ceiling specialist
Since Hunter Douglas developed its first metal ceiling 60 years ago, it has introduced a wide range of styles that can be used in almost all types of building. Business Development Manager Pieter van Rees says these new shapes and styles mean there has never been more choice for architects and designers. Because acoustics are crucial in a design, the ceilings can be manufactured with micro-perforations and an acoustic non-woven backing can be added to the panels as these help to absorb the sound energy. Hunter Douglas’s metal ceilings are guaranteed to last for years and because they are made from recyclable materials, they are also more environmentally friendly. As well as standard colours, all metal ceilings can be finished in RAL colours, as well as unique metallic hues. Architects and designers can also commission a custom design.

Advanced £92 Million Student Accommodation Project Receives Advanced Protection
Five new towers at the University of Brighton’s Moulsecoomb Campus are now protected by a fault-tolerant network of MxPro 5 fire panels from global fire systems leader, Advanced.
The 13 networked MxPro 5 panels have been installed to protect the five student accommodation towers varying between eight and 18 storeys, which will provide more than 800 student bedrooms as well as ground-floor fitness facilities and amenities for the students’ union.
Responsible for the fire system design, supply and commissioning were West Sussex-based Southern Fire Alarms (SFA) Ltd, who also installed the equipment alongside mechanical and electrical engineers, J&B Hopkins. The fire system is integrated with multiple third-party interfaces, including Automatic Opening Vents (AOVs), sprinklers and access control.
Careful consideration was given to the complex cause and effect programming that needed to be applied across the site. Each building is configured with a six-minute investigation period, with sounders on the floor of origin initiated after a single device activation. A single subsequent device activation will escalate into full evacuation of the specific tower. A master key switch has also been introduced, to allow for full evacuation of all towers if required.
MxPro 5 is the fire industry’s leading multiprotocol fire system solution, certified by FM Approvals to the EN 54 standard. It offers customers a choice of four detector protocols and a completely open installer network, backed up by free training and support. MxPro 5 panels can be used in single-loop, single-panel format, or easily configured into high-speed networks of up to 200 panels covering huge areas. Ease of installation and configuration, as well as a wide range of peripheral, make MxPro 5 suitable for almost any application.

Interpave
Permeable Paving for Trees
A new case study from Interpave highlights the impact of concrete block permeable paving as an irrigation source, sustaining street trees and green infrastructure without root problems and providing a range of benefits. The award-winning Bridget Joyce Square in Australia Road, London, is a sustainable drainage (SuDS) park with community at its heart and an exemplar for future urban landscapes. Its low-intervention, thin overlay technology enables sustainable reuse of existing conventional road bases and their embodied carbon, creating attractive, safe, shared-surfaces.
Capturing rainwater runoff straight from the surface without gulleys, concrete block permeable paving overlays provide a gradual flow of clean water laterally into raingardens or basins, for storage and irrigation. Some 5 years after completion, the permeable paving is performing well and the trees and other green infrastructure are healthy, substantial and particularly well-established.
Unlike conventional impermeable hard landscape materials, concrete block permeable paving allows the same pattern of run-off transfer to the ground as natural vegetation,
allowing water and – importantly – air to reach tree and green infrastructure roots, while still providing an attractive hard surface above. This enables trees to mature and deliver their real potential – including net carbon storage, urban cooling through shading and evapotranspiration, biodiversity and public wellbeing. And research shows that concrete block permeable paving does not suffer from the root damage commonly experienced with other paving surfaces.

Stuart Turner
New Aquaboost system improves pressure and flow
A magnificent Grade I listed Tudor Manor House in Worcestershire has a new water management system thanks Stuart Turner. The 13th Century building now boasts an Aquaboost In-Tank 1000 litre (Two Piece) Twin Pump Booster SetABI-0303-2S-SPC/M-1000-2. It was specified as it is maintenance free, fit
and forget and due to it having submersible pumps meant it is water cooled and low noise. The two piece construction was also ideal as it allowed the tank to be installed in a much more desirable location within one of the two plant rooms. The new system is providing better pressure and flow to all 8 bathrooms, not to mention all the other outlets.

OMNIE has once again developed an advanced solution to speed the installation of low build height underfloor heating (UFH), which also fits within its Tileover selection and offers significant cost savings. The Ultimate2 board consists of XPS insulation – improving output while the unique 2-3 mm deep diffuser channel surrounding the multi-directional runs increases screed contact with the pipe, thus cutting the warm-up time. The overall installed depth of just 27mm leaves plenty of room for tiles to be laid on top without the need to trim doors or skirting in retrofit situations. The upper surface is pre-primed so the RS Flex leveling screed can be directly applied to achieve a strong bond.

Sustainable, systemised insulation for wet areas
Thanks to complete system solutions that wedi offers for designing bathrooms, specifiers no longer need to risk compatibility of different brands when planning for floor/ wall insulation in wet areas.
wedi provides guaranteed system safety through the unrivalled diversity of its product range - 100% waterproof ready-to-tile modular elements that interlock with one another and with wedi accessories forming the famous wedi system. All wedi elements are manufactured with 100% green energy, contain at least 25% recycled core and the components of wedi elements, such as the XPS foam core, the cement coating and the glass fibre reinforcement, have their own Environmental Product Declarations showing the footprint of these products throughout their entire lifecycle. Coupling wedi Fundo shower solutions with wedi building boards and/or wedi Subliner Dry & Flex membranes on walls and floors, would not only result in a CE marked walk-in shower area but would also be awarded with a full wedi system guarantee. What’s more, thanks to the excellent thermal properties (0.036W/mK) of wedi subconstruction elements, the use of wedi systems results in significant reduction of
running costs and also drastically reduces the amount of time needed for the project.
A floor to ceiling one-step solution, now complemented by seamless design surfaces of the wedi Top Line for an inside-out protection – all from a single source with a system guarantee of at least 10 years giving longlasting peace of mind for architects, planners, installers and end-users alike.

CUPA PIZARRAS
CUPA PIZARRAS slates gives coastal weather protection
CUPA PIZARRAS R17 slate has been specified to meet the design challenges of a former Georgian windmill renovation at Fort Green, near Aldeburgh in Suffolk. Originally, the windmill walls were going to be clad in cedar shingles however, contractor ELC Roofing recommended using the rectangular CUPA R17 slate from CUPA PIZARRAS as a more weather-resistant alternative. The slates, which protect against the salt water and wind, have been fitted on both the windmill’s curved wall, its pitched roof and elsewhere adding design details to the property’s walls. Every single slate was cut and fixed individually to accommodate the curve and ensure they aligned with the building’s inset windows as well as other architectural details.

Howells supplies patent glazing for £38m scheme
The Foss Barrier gate is a flood barrier system for the City of York, raised and lowered on steel wire ropes which are wound onto drums at either end of the glazed bridge connecting the two side towers. JBA Bentley appointed patent glazing specialist Howells to supply and install new and replacement glazing for the extended bridge. Having overcome many awkward design issues, Howells manufactured roof and vertical patent glazing using its HG2 and HG3 self-supported glazing bars, single glazed with special laminated glass. The bars were polyester powder coated for durability. Howells also designed and manufactured four adjustable louvres within the vertical glazing.

A light-coloured floor to aid daylighting
When roof window manufacturer VELUX built a new extension at their UK and Ireland head office, Junckers solid wood flooring was the perfect choice to enhance the light-filled space. Your fire doors may come with more than one overhead
Aside from the inconvenience and expense of repair or replacement, a damaged door closer can render a fire door inoperable, exposing tenants and occupants to risk.
Highly visible, surfacemounted door closers are an obvious target for removal, vandalism and misuse.
Whilst a seemingly costeffective choice when specified, the long term consequences of fitting surface-mounted door closers can extend beyond the financial costs of repair and replacement of closer and door; a fire door which fails to work properly will severely compromise tenant safety.
It is for these reasons that Powermatic jambmounted concealed door closers have become the preferred choice of local authorities and housing associations throughout the country.
Fitted and trusted by organisations such as Birmingham City Council, Camden Council,
and many more,
are totally concealed when the door is closed and unobtrusive when the door is open. As such, they present less of an opportunity for removal, tampering or damage, assuring the reliability of the fire door and delivering a host of benefits for landlord and tenant alike:-
• Reduced risk of damage from vandalism or tampering
• Closing speed and latching action adjustable without removing closer from door
• Certified for use on one-hour and half-hour fire doors in flats, apartments and HMOs
• The only CERTIFIRE jamb-mounted door closer Samuel Heath & Sons PLC, Leopold Street, Birmingham, B12 0UJ
